Just wanted to know if it were at all possible to download different chat bubbles for the stock messaging app? Not really interested in using anything other than the stock app to text.

Hey gang,
I've just installed Handcent and its very Awesome indeed so I want to make this my default SMS/MMS app.
My question:
How can I stop the HTC Message app from running in the background and, presumably, eating battery/CPU cycles.
I've turned off notifications for the HTC Message app so I only receive SMS notifications from Handcent but I want to kill the HTC Message app permanently. I should also say that I don't want to delete or 'un-install' it.
Thanks for any ideas,
E
BTW: Handcent is sweeeeet for those that haven't tried it. Big recommend!
get a task manager to stop any app you'd like.
The bug with the HTC messaging app was activated by sending a message through it. So if you haven't *sent* one through it since rebooting the device, it shouldn't eat hardly any resources.
I find that I get double notification sounds.
I'm sure although switched off, the HTC Messaenger is still sending the notification sound through.
Either that or Handcent is doing it twice :-(
You need to disable notification from the internal app. All Programs < Messages < Menu < Settings < Uncheck auto-retrieve & uncheck Notifications.
Thanks very much for this post
I came to ask the same question and you had already asked it. My problem is solved.
And yeah...Handcent is super sweet! \m/
Anyone know how to remove messaging from the phone permanently and just have handcent?

I know this is an old post but i figured i would update it with the answer for future searchbutton users

Ideas To Disable Default SMS App - Android
We're devleoping an SMS app for Android and are looking for ways to disable the default SMS app (all handset types).
Besides having the user manually disable notifications and auto-retrieve, any input on integrating and automating this with our SMS app or better ideas. Thank you.

Get handcent or compSMS. I use handcent. Worked better for me.
Edit: thought I was in the Desire forum, but I guess it should work anyway?

i mean its not that big a deal but just like anything else you put on the phone you dont need it but its cool.
Go into the notification settings:
settings-> all settings-> sounds & notifications-> notifications
from there select the event: Messaging: New text message. Check the box "Display message on screen"
Now when you get a text there will be a window that pops up from the bottom of the screen.

The apps you suggested are for Android and the HD2 is Windows Mobile so its not going to work.

is there any way to enable the option to reply from the notification bar like AOSP/CM using the stock messaging app? Im guessing no, but any advice would be nice.
+1...Would be nice to be able to mark as read also for the text and emails! I'm a droid noob so I'm lost!

I like the stock Samsung SMS app also.
This was where I screwed things up on my phone and I had to re-install the stock ROM because Titanium wouldn't let me restore.
I removed the AT&T Messages app thinking that doing so would make the default stock Samsung SMS app appear in the notification bar.
Man was I wrong. After removing the AT&T Messages app my contacts went all wonky.
It turns out that deleting the AT&T Messages app also removes a system app called Contacts Storage 4.2.2.
I tried to restore these apps using Titanium but it would fail to restore each time.
Maybe a dev will have a workaround for this.
^ good to know.
Well im using sliding messaging now and it does offer the reply from notification bar feature. Its a little buggy, but reliable enough for daily use.
Hi all, I flashed my rom with GoldenEye recently (which is a great, fast rom with terrific support!), but since then, I can't send group texts with GoSMS Pro. It worked before on the stock rom and it works from within the stock messaging app, but not GoSMS. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks... Josh
Facing the same issue. It worked fine on my s2 with gosms but now it sends it all desperate. I remember a setting somewhere that lets you keep messages together, have to dig through there for a solution.
Edit: spoke too soon. Settings>advanced>send options>group mms

Hey josh, I am having the same issue - I am currently on the GoldenEye ROM too, and group messaging on GO SMS no longer works for me. The stock messaging app works, but I was wondering if there's a fix to the GO SMS app (I prefer this because of their Emoji's). Unless anyone knows a keyboard app that allows for emoji's too? (I am currently using the Google Keyboard)
Edit - With the method Goliath mentioned, when I try sending a group message, it says "converting to MMS" and then gets stuck on the sending action. After about a minute, it gives me an "unable to send message" error. When I try sending a group message with this option disabled, it sends SMS messages to each recipient individually. The main problem is that my attempted group messages don't go through.

having you tried seeing if you can install the emoji pack in language settings? settings > language and input > google/android keyboard > add-on dictionaries > emoji for english words.
worked for me on aokp. that even allowed it work on swiftkey.

Hey beerdroid, thanks for the advice. I installed the emoji for english words language pack but don't know how to access it or pull it up (in GO SMS there's a plus sign to access emojis, but I don't have anything like this in my Google keyboard)
Do you know how I can find where this is installed?

try this. if you've installed the emoji pack then go into your stock sms and select menu > settings. scroll down and see if there is a "display" section. if so, mine has boxes that can be checked for "Emoji support" as well as "Quick emojis button". with these selected, emojis are supported and a button is implemented on the keyboard.

Dang i don't think my ROM (GoldenEye) has the Emoji Support or Quick Emojis Button options - let me try to flash AOKP to see if that works. Thanks very much for your help!
I pre ordered the G6 from Sprint and when I got it, it came with Android Messenger pre installed as the default texting app. I want to revert it to the default LG stock messaging app but there isn't even an option for it. Can anyone help?

Go to Application Manager > Choose one of your Messaging apps > Message app > see all messaging app > choose app to (Default)
It's not there. Even ATT shows a tutorial on how to customize text however, like the op said, my brand new LG G6 from Sprint seems to only have this super simple ans basic "Messenger". Very annoying things we enjoy keep get taken away so we can all be like cookie cutter phones with the same apps...
Ps: I's not in application manager. I saw Messenger from facebook and Messenger from Google.
