[Q] what modes support wired internet out of the box? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was thinking about getting my father a Nexus 7 tablet,
and for reasons I'd rather not go into. I'd need a model that would support using a usb Ethernet adapter,
I've heard that some models, support that and some do not.
How do I know what model to order?
And where can I get one that would support that?

It depends on the chipset used in the USB Ethernet adaptorand whether the driver for it is in the kernel you're using. A complicating factor is that manufacturers sometimes change the chipset whilst keeping model/case styles the same. Google "nexus 7 otg Ethernet" and read.

Ok, thanks!
I did read quite a few articles from Google, but they seemed to have conflicting info.
This helps a lot! thanks again!

HDMI out and OTG support?

So, I know it just came out today, but damn this device sounds amazingly superior.
So does anyone know if it has HDMI out or Micro-USB to HDMI out? Anything about OTG so we can use usb keyboards, mice, flash drives, etc?
I am seriously considering selling my iPods for this thing. I already have a Kindle Fire, but I might sell that too for this thing...

HDMI out through MHL otg suppport is unknown but considering its a nexus it will be easy to add so consider it supported

That is what i am thinking, since it is a nexus product the developers should be able to rape the nexus7 with alot of goodies.
If it does not have the innards to support it, MHL support might not be so easy to add in. I'm just hoping they're not holding back for the sake of Nexus Q sales. But I suspect, that may be exactly what is happening.
We'll see, I hope it has the support built right in.
USB keyboards, mice and "other devices" are supported.

Where in that article does it confirm no MHL support? They even suggest using an MHL adapter if you want HDMI out...

Custom JB But What About Acer JB>?

Ok guys i have noticed one thing since the jelly-bean boot came thundering down apon us and we made the break within hours to get jelly b running for the thankf of dev's alike as randomblame and waydownsouth.
Have we stopped checking or official though? did a search and seems there may be offical jelly bean for us.!!!........
be it that we may have to wait until the next big android update is due to get it from our update-unreliable Acer lol.
just dont understand why the site says the a500 is only available in india......err im in london bought close by retail mofo.
http://www.themobileindian.com/news/7795_Acer-to-upgrade-several-Iconia-tablet-to-Android-4.1
Of their different tablets (100, 200, 700.. etc) only the 500 series is available in India. Not you can only buy it in India. Those are the only ones you can buy in India.
and good find. WDS is doing excellent work, and at worst, this would only drastically speed up his efforts.

i would say its pretty likely as the a500 is one of the acer flagship tablets :victory:
Will USB devices still be supported in JB (and future releases)? The number of tablets with USB ports is decreasing.

They should be. The new thing is USB OTG. That pretty means with the right adapter( Micro USB to full size USB) you can still do USB host( mice keyboards, thumb drives etc). On phones I think this is a good idea, but on tablets I think its a bad idea. The full saize port was one of the reasons I bought the A500.
i would think, so android supposed to be adding more and more applicable usb drivers to accept more usb "add-ons" it wouldnt make sense to start removing one of the best features of android, like Drewmungus says they will problably just change the format on new tabs for OTG, which in my opinion is bull****, i already have a full size to micro usb cable lol

Well, let's see... my Nexus 7 has a USB port. Jelly Bean came with the Nexus 7... so, I'd say... yes?
nice, I was thinking acer would just abandon it like many other companies that released newer upgraded versions
now I guess the only question is how long will it take to actually get the update...
I wasn't aware that the nexus 7 had a usb port on it, but I'm glad to hear it.
nexus 7 has a mini usb port (the same exact port used to connect the a500 to your comp) not a full size usb port if thats what you are referring too
Probably because a fullsize USB connector is almost as thick as an N7...

Is the micro usb port a hub or just a charging port on the nexus sorry for ot. Also are there any other jb a500 roms on the web anywhere besides wds's?
It's a full-on USB port, that also charges. AFAIK, you can use standard USB devices with a dongle adapter, and you can also plug in a USB hub, too.
Thats interesting to know thanks I may have to get one after all

Question about MHL on Nexus 7 (again)

Ok, I have read the articles in regards to MHL not being supported on the Nexus 7. My question is if this is due to the hardware not supporting it or is it because the OS itself for the Nexus 7 does not include the modules needed to support MHL on the Nexus 7. Anyone have any idea?
Hardware issue I think. You can't have read well!

Well, its not that I didn't read well, but most articles just say it does not support MHL. There is no clear answer in what I have read that clearly states whether it is due to hardware or software. They say OTG is not supported, but installing stick mount on a rooted nexus 7 gets around that. What about MHL? Is it because a chip is missing from the Nexus 7 so that's why it is not supported? If so, would it be possible to create a module that connects to the mini-usb or the 4 pogo plugs to add this functionality? If not, could there be driver like stick mount that enables this functionality?
It's a great device, but it would be nice if it did support MHL somehow.
From what I understand anything that can be done in hardware can be done in software

From what I understand anything that can be done in hardware can be done in software but slower, however maybe the signal that needs to be sent from the micro usb is not present currently, so if someone who knows about the internals were to write something it should be possible, I think if you can emulate a whole pc why not a mhl signal?

Otg support

Does Galaxy tab 4 t231 have USB otg support? If not, can it be enabled by any method? Planning to buy this tablet. Please answer.. Thank you for your time

Would really love to know this too. It's my understanding previous versions of the Galaxy Tab support USB OTG, and would love to enable it on the Tab 4.
On my smartphone I have an option in settings to turn OTG on and off, unfortunately no option seems to exist on my Tab4. Assuming the Tab 4 has hardware support for it, how would I go about enabling OTG?
Bump...
Would LOVE a solution as well~!:good:
Ran USB Diagnostics. As of now there is no support whatsoever but a custom ROM or Kernel may be able to enable it. I suppose there is a slight chance since the larger variants have OTG support and the hardware is similar.
Edit: Playing around with some OTG apps, it appears that we do not have hardware support so there's about 70-90% chance the tablet will purely not support it and trying to do so would be impossible.

I ran that same app on my Tab4 as well, unfortunately I wasn't able to understand everything the app told me so I concluded OTG support on the Tab4 was inconclusive =P
Considering OTG is supported on the other Galaxy Tab devices, what reasoning would Samsung have to not enable this feature on the Tab4 7.0? Especially if the hardware is the same (or very similar) it just doesn't make any sense to me why they wouldn't give the Tab4 7.0 OTG support as well. It's actually very frustrating in 2014 that this Tab doesn't support OTG. I am almost considering returning it solely for this reason (I haven't yet, because I'm very pleased with everything else the Tab4 has to offer).
My cheap, Chinese sub $100 android ICS tablet I bought last year had OTG support! What gives Samsung? I sort of expect more from a major brand like Samsung.

So, I may be wrong but I believe the problem may be in chip set itself, since its Marvell CPU (I never heard of this company). However, the Tab 3 also carried an older Marvell CPU, which they were able to overcome this problem with a custom Kernel. So, may be this tablet has slight chance of having OTG support but Scumbag Samsung decided that they don't the cheaper tablet to sell.

Well I'll certainly be holding out on that slight chance for OTG support lol. I was really looking forward to using my tab 4 as a second display with DSLR Controller, so you can imagine my disappointment when it didn't work =/
Either way, if a dev ends up seeing this and wants to implement this feature, let me know if I can do anything help (beta testing custom kernels) or whatever, just let me know. I'm more than willing to help move this forward, even if it ends up not working.
Hi, on my t235 otg works. For now i've tested it inly with usb storage sticks (8gb tdk, 8gb toshiba and 16gb verbatim) - stock file manager and total commander fully works with it. I dont have any mouse or keyboard to check that it works on otg.

HI Osiris, do you got OTG work with Tab4? i'm in a similar situation with a Canon 70D & DSLR Controller...

I was curious if my Tab 4 has usb otg support. Turns out it did, even tho those usb otg checker apps said it didn't. I was able to open up the stuf on my usb stick. My model is SM-T330NU and i'm on 4.4.2
Also, it also supports external dac (Tested with Fiio E17) and it works with spotfiy. I'm starting to like this tablet even more .
I would like to buy this cable in order to use my Tab 4 to charge my Nexus 4. (Only need this on the road charging done when I'm on vacation, which is every 2-3 years, making buying a battery bank not worth it)
Would this cable work fine?
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Micro-USB-Ma...323059?hash=item419dbd9ab3:g:h94AAOSwuWVWE0V1
Please note my main objective is not accessing USB keys or HDD's, but purely use the cable to charge my phone. Accessing a USB media storage would be a bonus.

Hi is that a 7" or an 8"? The 8 has otg but my 7 doesn't as standard. If it's a 7" how did you get it to work? Would LOVE to get OTG working on my tab4 7" as it's literally the only reason I bought it and didn't realise and (wrongly) assumed) it would have it.

USB type C to HDMI out?

I was browsing Amazon and noticed some USB-C hubs that had HDMI out. Would those work with this phone or do they only work with devices like newer Apple laptops?
Edit: So I went to the MHL website to see if that much was supported at least, and the Axon 7 is not currently listed as an MHL supported device. I'm not sure how often they update the list though.
I'm also interested in wired video-out solution, I hate laggy wireless in games! We have to wait for any owner to report if MHL or any other adapter works or not.

manu7irl Thank you for your post. The Axon 7 doesn't support MHL from USB-C to HDMI. You can always cast wirelessly to a chromecast or another supported device. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to say that all hope for wired video output is not lost, yet.
There's a fairly new Technology called DisplayLink.
It uses USB 3.0 for video output. The only downside being you would need to use a DisplayLink Certified USB docking station in conjunction with the DisplayLink app.

This is me asking!
There is still a possibility to use AOA 2.0 protocol it is kernel supported natively.
there a docking station working on that good old protocol and it is a really clever docking station,
also it is CES 2k16 AWARD WINNING.
You can check my own investigation in that post:

Does any phone even support MHL anymore. That was such a great thing with my LG OG and then all of the sudden none of the new phones support it just some BS ass mircast.
