Custom JB But What About Acer JB>? - Acer Iconia A500

Ok guys i have noticed one thing since the jelly-bean boot came thundering down apon us and we made the break within hours to get jelly b running for the thankf of dev's alike as randomblame and waydownsouth.
Have we stopped checking or official though? did a search and seems there may be offical jelly bean for us.!!!........
be it that we may have to wait until the next big android update is due to get it from our update-unreliable Acer lol.
just dont understand why the site says the a500 is only available in india......err im in london bought close by retail mofo.

Of their different tablets (100, 200, 700.. etc) only the 500 series is available in India. Not you can only buy it in India. Those are the only ones you can buy in India.
and good find. WDS is doing excellent work, and at worst, this would only drastically speed up his efforts.

i would say its pretty likely as the a500 is one of the acer flagship tablets :victory:

Will USB devices still be supported in JB (and future releases)? The number of tablets with USB ports is decreasing.

They should be. The new thing is USB OTG. That pretty means with the right adapter( Micro USB to full size USB) you can still do USB host( mice keyboards, thumb drives etc). On phones I think this is a good idea, but on tablets I think its a bad idea. The full saize port was one of the reasons I bought the A500.

i would think, so android supposed to be adding more and more applicable usb drivers to accept more usb "add-ons" it wouldnt make sense to start removing one of the best features of android, like Drewmungus says they will problably just change the format on new tabs for OTG, which in my opinion is bull****, i already have a full size to micro usb cable lol

Well, let's see... my Nexus 7 has a USB port. Jelly Bean came with the Nexus 7... so, I'd say... yes?

nice, I was thinking acer would just abandon it like many other companies that released newer upgraded versions
now I guess the only question is how long will it take to actually get the update...

I wasn't aware that the nexus 7 had a usb port on it, but I'm glad to hear it.

nexus 7 has a mini usb port (the same exact port used to connect the a500 to your comp) not a full size usb port if thats what you are referring too

Probably because a fullsize USB connector is almost as thick as an N7...

Is the micro usb port a hub or just a charging port on the nexus sorry for ot. Also are there any other jb a500 roms on the web anywhere besides wds's?

It's a full-on USB port, that also charges. AFAIK, you can use standard USB devices with a dongle adapter, and you can also plug in a USB hub, too.

Thats interesting to know thanks I may have to get one after all

How come Samsung can't what Archos did

The new Archos tablets will have USB 3G stick for direct internet connection. Since we have the USB adapter from Samsung there should be a way to make work for instance Huawei USB 3g modems with it. Both are Honeycomb, no?

or maybe...
just buy a wifi + 3G/LTE version !?
I already have the GTab and I am using it with Cradlepoint PHS300. I would like to stick the USB 3g modem into the adapter and not use the CP router.
Because Archos compromise on screen, touch interaction and quality and adds these features to attract. Archos cost less but look at the quality of the Archos it is total junk. Even junk is better than Archos. I was into Archos before and tried hard to convince myself that the devices are good but Archos's quality junkness won. BTW you can buy tether plan to use it with GTAB if understand your question right.

So you've specifically tried out these new Archos devices that are not slated to launch till Spetember and already concluded that they are junk???
Let's at least be objective here.
I like the fact that Archos is only charging a $49 premium if one wants to go 3G from a wifi Archos, and you don't have to buy a whole new device.
Dual core TI Omap CPU @ 1.5ghz is nothing to sneeze at. Initial previews by Engadget were good. These are not the Archos devices of yore. I have me sights on the 8.9" model.

Might just need some kernel support. Might be in the kernel already.
I don't have a 3G USB stick so wouldn't be able to poke at it.
I inserted my USB 3g stick via USB adpter waiting but not hoping for a miracle. I suppose we need a software, since the USB modem lits but doesnt turn into solid blue, which means connection. A "APN" setup maybe?

MHL USB Adapter Support?

Hello everyone. Within a month of receiving my tablet last year, I (or someone else using the tablet) somehow managed to damage one of the pins in the USB port and it no longer works. However, while researching the GNExus (I intend to purchase it soon) I began to wonder if the MHL Adapters for USB OTG will work with the Iconia? If anyone can confirm if it works or not I will greatly appreciate it. Here's a link to one that I intend to buy for the GNExus.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938451&pf_rd_i=507846
Thanks in advance!
Did you ever figure this out? I've had the a500 for awhile, just got the Nexus, picked up mhl adapter at same time. Would be slick if it works for a500 as-is, though I wouldn't be surprised if the micro-hdmi is much better to use...
Need to just get a micro-hdmi cable...
I think you misunderstood. I was referring to the USB OTG adapters. I did take the risk and buy one and unfortunately it doesn't work with the A500. Nothing I plug into it gets any power. Tried it with a friends HTC One X and it didn't seem to work there either. Not sure if it was supposed to work on the One X though.
Basically, it could just be a faulty cable, but it could also mean that it just isn't supported. Couldn't hurt to try if you already have one though
I already have a Micro-HDMI cable that I bought on Amazon a while ago. Works great and at $5 its a worthwhile investment
I'm running ****'s ICS ROM v158 based on Android 4.0.4 if it makes any difference.

HDMI out and OTG support?

So, I know it just came out today, but damn this device sounds amazingly superior.
So does anyone know if it has HDMI out or Micro-USB to HDMI out? Anything about OTG so we can use usb keyboards, mice, flash drives, etc?
I am seriously considering selling my iPods for this thing. I already have a Kindle Fire, but I might sell that too for this thing...

That is what i am thinking, since it is a nexus product the developers should be able to rape the nexus7 with alot of goodies.
If it does not have the innards to support it, MHL support might not be so easy to add in. I'm just hoping they're not holding back for the sake of Nexus Q sales. But I suspect, that may be exactly what is happening.
We'll see, I hope it has the support built right in.
USB keyboards, mice and "other devices" are supported.

Hyundai T7 review

Disclaimer: I have no vested interest in you buying one of these.
I just got one of these about two weeks ago. So far, so good especially given the low price. The only serious downside is the battery is on the small side but unless you must watch streaming video for hours at a time, probably not going to be an issue. Screen is very as is the ability to have SD, hdmi and a usb port that actually works. It only has ICS on it and I think the build date is jan 25. But my best guess from trying to decipher the chinese or korean Hyundai website is that they will have a JB update after the official release at MWC. Device also appears to be built by Samsung but not 100% certain on that. If you want a lot more details about it (way more than would be appropriate) here http://www.gedankenexperiment.dk/pivot/entry.php?id=865&w=rant

I just bought a Hyundai T7s via an Amazon reseller in the UK, and it too works very well indeed. It's hard to believe it's so much cheaper than a Nexus 7 and yet has USB on the go and so on working right out of the box, not to mention a micro sd card slot etc. The only pain so far is the dedicated charger - it's a shame it doesn't charge via micro usb. Exynos Abuse root method works perfectly which is great.

Apparently charging by USB is possible but has to do with the current provided. Check the T7 thread at slatedroid.

Custom Nexus Player with 3-port hub & 512gb storage! Yes or No?

I been waiting for Google to release a new NP with better specs, however I really don't need 4K or Ethernet, so I am wondering if I should just build my own with the specs/features I wanted from the start?
Here's what I was thinking of doing.
1. Buy a round powered USB 2.0 hub, such as this.
2. Install a 500gb SSD in USB mode hidden inside the HUB (yes I can easily do this).
3. Build a short OTG cable, Micro to Mini USB.
4. Velcro the NP perfectly centered to the top of the round USB hub. Using velcro keeps the NP button available at least. And using a OTG cable instead of hard wiring the HUB to the NP also allows me to detach each section for easy access or NP resale.
Specs would then become:
Nexus Player with 500GB storage and 3 port USB Hub all built into one fairly small streaming device.
OR should I wait longer to see if Google does something like this anyway in 2016 (similar to the NVIDIA Shield)? The engineering and work would be pretty simple for this veteran Electronics Tech, but the wait for Google to do it is really getting on my nerves. If I do it, it will look damn near like a consumer product anyway, but if I wait for Google to do it it will probably have Ethernet and 4K/60 built in. Not sure if its worth building myself this device, this late in the NP life cycle.
Any takers/suggestions on my idea? Just not sure the next Nexus Player will be worth waiting for. lol, but it sure would be fun to build such a device myself.

Awesome idea if you have the time for it, I really dont think Google will be making another streaming box anytime soon.
Yeah that's my fear too. For me having the Nexus name on my devices is of utmost importance. However with what Asus ceo said about developing many devices for Google at the moment makes me wonder if one of them could be a new NP.
Thanks for the reply.

I'd do it just cuz it sounds cool as Hell. And you know it'll be awhile before they come out with the 500gb nexus player.

Yeah, I was thinking that 500gb might be a tad much anyway. I have a dozen retired SSD's lying around already, a bunch of 32gb models from OCZ, and several from Crucial and Intel in the 64gb, and 128gb range. Maybe one of those would be small enough to fit. I know most if not all of the newer SSD's from 2014, 2015 etc are very small inside when they are of say 128gb and 256gb because they usually only have one or two chips at most, thus the PCB's are very small. I bet the old OCZ drives I have are just too big. Oh heck with it, Ill open one up right now and take a peek, lol. BRB
OK, yeah the old OCZ Vertexs PCBs are too big I think to fit inside that round hub. I guess I need that hub in order to know for sure how much space I have to work with.
If you get it working post some pics

Sure thing :good:
The nexus player wasn't a success because of the issues early on which is a shame because now it really is a decent streaming box. I don't think we'll see anyone release something similar anytime soon. I only picked up one because of the fire sale at target and decided to replace my roku with it.
I'm going to install the PureNexus rom for the Nexus Player with an OTG cable and a usb/network dongle that was recently posted, will report back!

You can get it via Ebay or NewEgg,
Amazon also has it, but they have screwed up this and 4 of my Prime Order deliveries in the past 10 days, delays and excuses each time. If you can avoid using Amazon, do so.
You can get a short micro-usb OTG cable for like under $1.50 easy on ebay. I think i might have gotten a few for 28 cents. Just bid on a few of them lol or pay the $1.83 buy it now. or it might be $1.50. seller is based in cali so shipping is quick. i'm using a targus 3 port hub for a laptop., and a logitech k400 keyboard/trackpad, and a 32 gb usb thumb drive from microcenter that was free. oh and i paid $15.xx for my nexusplayer on clearance from target.

I would prefer to manufacture my own OTG cable with my own specs from the many cable parts I already have in stock. However, $15 for the NP is exactly what I been looking for and still have not found. I'm still looking and some day, maybe soon for Christmas sale or clearance I might find one. I could go to town everyday, day after day until it goes on sale but then I would have spent $1000 in gasoline just to find it for $15, lol. Probably best I just buy it for $50 at ebay I think, assuming it never goes on sale online again.
