When I'm on stock (d80020k) 4.4.2 I get nearly excellent (4-5 bars) 4g data performance. However, when I try any custom rom, my bars always show "R" which I believe is roaming by them. I'm currently on Mahdi rom with the d800 patch. When I go back to stock using the twrp backup, everything works fine again. Can anyone help me as I'd really like to stay on a custom rom. My Sim card is for a T-Mobile mvno called lycamobile. My phone is unlocked so it should be working. I have a speculation that this might be because of my service provider.
No one wants to shed some light on this? This didn't work on jellybean and Kitkat, both being different devices on the same provider.
Update: My provider says that on some devices, it shows that it's roaming on it's own network, and for that reason, roaming is the same price as regular. However, I don't yet understand why it doesn't show roaming and works fine on stock, yet always, always roams on aosp/cm. However, I'm terribly confused why It roams on aosp/cm. I tried changing network operator to Lycamobile, still roaming. I found out that the roaming "R" is completely cosmetic, as I can make and receive calls, make and receive texts, and use data. Is there any mods to replace the R with like 4g lte or something? It really bugs me when I can't see the speed of data when I'm using it.

Has anyone experienced this before? I seem to loose 3G connectivity while talking on a call. I can keep talking... but the 3G icon disappears and I see an alert icon notifying me that I've lose data connectivity.
This doesn't happen all the time, but quite often. Sometimes, the icon with signal bars will have a small 'R' at the top left indicating that I may be in Roaming mode.
I've got the ATT Nexus One with Bell Mobility as my carrier (Canada). They have a pure HSDPA network with no 2G fall back, so I'm not sure how I could lose 3G and still be on the call... I've got 2.2.1 FRG83 with Stock Android and the phone is NOT rooted.
Any suggestions? Should I reapply FRG83 -- or the entire stock android image (is this even possible on a non-rooted phone)?
Not sure if this is the same, as I never go into Roaming mode... but I routinely lose my data connection while making phone calls. I'm on T-mobile, btw.
Is this something normal? Have you just ended up living with it?
I'm slightly concerned about missing an email or SMS during a call if data connectivity is lost. Although, I don't think that data is truly lost as Bell Mobility only has a 3G network, there is no 2G to fall back on...
Are you sure you're not roaming over other networks? I'm sure you are switched to another network, and the data is dropped because Android has a switch to turn off data (which has nothing to do with SMS, by the way) when roaming, and this switch is on by default.
When the data is dropped, I believe it's not re-negotiated until the end of your conversation, so if you're switched to a roaming cell tower for even a second - your data is gone until the end of your call.
If your cellular carrier has agreement with other carrier's cell towers and they accept roaming (which is sometimes the case, as I've learned from this forum) - you should turn that switch off to retain data even when roaming.
Hey. I have an HTC Magic (32A) from Rogers. I followed the guide on the CM wiki for rooting my phone and installing CM 6.1.0. The installation and such went without a hitch; it's working fine, except my data connection no longer works. WiFi works perfectly fine, though. It's just a shame because I'm now paying for a data plan that I can't use.
I read around here that it's usually an issue with the APN info, but I triple-checked it and it seems all fine and dandy. The "Data connection" option is also checked, as it should be.
The only thing I can think of at this point is the ridiculous 911 debacle, but the Rogers waiver form for reactivating data says my IMEI is invalid -- this seems like a very common issue, but I'm a bit weary of calling tech support since I have a rooted phone.
If it's even possible at this point, I wouldn't mind even reverting back to my stock 2.1 state, except I didn't make any backups with nandroid first. Any help would be appreciated. Here's my version stuff:

Have you tried popping your sim card into another 3G capable phone, and see if it can manage any 3G traffic?
If so, then it is not a provider / data enable issue, but rather a phone issue.
If you installed CM, then your APN should have been set automatically (CM comes with a big list). If you messed with the APN and saved it, you might wanna check it a 4th time
Have you tried the 2g/3g toggle button in the power widget that comes with CM?
Have you tried the settings of the power widget that comes with CM, where you can configure the toggle options for 2g/3g?
Do you even have normal "g" (GPRS)?
Do you live in a concrete underground bunker? Have you got good enough signal for data traffic?
Data service enable from your network provider is usually to the SIM, and not to the phone (where you IMEI resides).
I think if they block the phone based on IMEI (or don't recognize your IMEI), then you will have no connectivity (both data and voice/txt).
Thanks for the reply!
I tried putting the SIM card into another phone just now (a Nexus One, unrooted, stock ROM), and it's the same thing: voice/text works but no data.
I've had no luck with the APN list from CM. I tried another list I found on the internet somewhere but that didn't work either. I've since reset it back to the CM default.
Tried the 2G/3G toggling, didn't work.
I've never even seen the data icon that shows 3G or regular G. Is there a better way to check if I have a GPRS connection?
I've tried it at multiple altitudes. Right now I'm sitting in an office and I've got all four bars on my signal.
My uncle happens to work for Rogers; I asked him about it and he said he'll send me a list of instructions on what to do, in case the problem is indeed on Rogers' end. If it works then I'll post it here for y'all.
I have an unlocked Defy from T-Mobile USA that I'm using with my AT&T service, but I'm only getting EDGE wherever I go, no UMTS at all, and I've even heard of people getting it to run on HSPA bands. I know already that HSPA is available everywhere from my home to my workplace, thanks to my Atrix 4G. I've rooted the Defy and it's running Cyanogenmod 7 latest. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I can find nothing on this forum or on Google to remedy the issue.
You should try to change the freq via baseband switcher. And restart.
Maybe you got the "2g only" checked in networks settings..uncheck that.
Settings >Wireless & networks > Mobile networks
You can also put automatic(2G and 3G) mode in GSM/UMTS network preferences.
Thanks for the reply Viper. I just noticed the baseband is set to some central Europe nonsense. Should I change it to one of the T-Mobile USA band settings? There's nothing there for AT&T.
Edit: I changed the baseband to US T-Mobile 3.Something, whichever was latest. 2G only was not checked. I'm still getting 2G only. Could it be my APN settings? Could I copy the APNs from my Atrix?
I'm having a problem with my AT&T connection as well, but I've been using my phone unlocked on the network since March with no problem. I'm new to modding, but OCD about streamlining my electronics. My friend suggested rooting my device and flashing a new ROM. I decided on stock Nordic Froyo, and it makes me so happy not to see all the T-mobile crap in my apps tray.
BUT the collateral damage is not so hot. I have no 3g or even 2g connection anymore. I tried the fix in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944258 and was able to get a signal with 4 bars instead of the previous state of emergency calls only, but no letters like E or 3g and no ability to use the internet/transfer data. I also installed the broadband switcher in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 and tried all of the T-mobile US bands. No luck. I did rest the APN to default. No change. I've been using wifi, but will have to go back to work soon. Not having access to the smart part of my smartphone will feel sort of like having an arm cut off.
I'm not sure what to do next. I could try flashing another ROM, but from what I've read in the forums, that's no guarantee.
If anyone has any suggestions to help a noob, I'd be forever grateful.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the link, halah. Do I apply this as an update.zip from recovery? Or install?
Never mind, it won't work for me, for whatever reason.
Problem has been resolved. See my final post in this thread.
Long time lurker. First time poster.
I am having problems getting 3G data on my new phone.
Last week I activated a new Moto X Pure Edition on the Sprint network via MVNO Ting. The phone appeared to activate just fine. Voice, text, LTE, Wi-Fi, and 1x data are all working without any obvious issues. Phone is pure stock.
3G data is not working. If I set Preferred Network Type to "LTE (recommended)", mobile data works on LTE but if I travel to an area that has not yet been upgraded to LTE, it will not drop back to 3G. Further, if I choose 3G as the Preferred Network Type regardless of whether the phone is connected to an LTE tower or a non-LTE tower, I get no data connection. Same for Global - no 3G connection.
If I choose "1x" as the Preferred Network Type (whether in an LTE area or not) then the phone will establish a data connection. The phone reports this connection as 3G in the status bar but the speed is so unusable that I doubt it can be a 3G connection.
I've done a carrier wipe, updated the device config (profile) and updated the PRL, all several times. Nothing changed. I've also done a factory reset which also did not help. I did not have any issues with my Nexus 5 which the MXPE replaced. I have since reactivated the Nexus 5 with a new number while troubleshooting this problem and it reactivated just fine. No issues at all.
Questions:
1) SignalCheck Pro reports that mobile data is "unregistered" when trying to get 3G data. Is registration of 3G data tied to the SIM card or to the MEID of the phone? Trying to determine if the registration problem lies with the SIM, the phone, or the network.
2) Why would I be able to get a 1x data connection but not 3G?
3) Ting is suggesting network problems may be playing a part but I'm not sure as the problem has persisted through several cities around west Texas and eastern New Mexico and throughout Lubbock TX which has many cell towers. Is there any way this could be a network issue?
4) Is the SIM for the MXPE compatible with my old Nexus 5? I'm wondering if swapping the SIM into my N5 will help to diagnose the problem.
5) Is anyone else with a MXPE having issues with 3G data?
This one is puzzling and I need some help from the gurus. Thanks much.

Bump.
Swapped SIMS with one sent by Ting to verify the problem wasn't with the SIM. Still no 3G.

Yes..i am having the same issue..with vodafone in india
Update. After two Moto X PE phones, numerous factory resets, much research and testing, there is now a work around to this problem. The problem does not appear to impact any phones on the big 4 networks. It only impacts phones on a Sprint MVNO.
There are now known eHRPD issues with Sprint and their MVNOs. The work around solution is to disable eHRPD. Sprint is working on changes to eHRPD that may resolve the issue permanently. Thanks to Ting for their persistence in helping get to the bottom of this problem.

Final update. Earlier this month Sprint released some changes to the way eHRPD handoffs are handled and that resolved my issue. My Moto X PE now works as it should with no workarounds necessary to get 3G data.

There was no update pushed to the phone and no changes to the phone. The fix was on the network side.

So why not work 3g? Is the problem in cell operator?
^^Sprint had some issues with 3g (ehrpd) on mvno's. It would work if forced to evdo, but not ehrpd. Sprint made some changes to their network so this now works correctly. It was a network side issue.
This is a Galaxy S5 on the Sprint Network with Lineage OS version from a few weeks ago.
Last week this was working fine and then since Sunday cell service stopped working completely. The only change I did was updating TWRP, I did not update LineageOS, but I can't imagine TWRP would have affected it. I ended up reverting back to the stock ROM thinking I would have to call Srpint customer service, but then it started working under the stock ROM. Reflashed TWRP and Lineage OS and no service. Tried older and newest versions of TWRP and Lineage OS but nothing works except stock ROM (yuck).
The cellular connection says "no service" with completely empty bars. About every 5 seconds it will flash like it is connected, with most bars and the little R for roaming, then immediately goes back to "no service". I've tried changing preferred networks and looked at settings but can't find anything to fix it.
Any ideas? It's almost like the network is rejecting it but I don't see why it would matter if it is a custom ROM.
EDIT: oh yeah and on start up it says "Activating cellular service... This may take up to 5 minutes" or and then after a while says "Couldn't Activate" and that it may be fixed by restarting the phone (which of course doesn't fix it). Also I'm not entirely sure if it is related to roaming or not.
EDIT2: I'm wondering/betting this has something to do with the ICCID number. I noticed with Lineage OS installed it says "DUMMY_NV_ICC_SERIAL" but with the stock ROM it is a long string of digits. Now maybe I can change the ICCID on Lineage OS? Or maybe Lineage OS isn't reading my sim card properly (from googling what ICCID is)?
Did you ever figure this out? I have the same issue. Until the most recent build, I was forcing the phone down to 3G because of the SMS bug, but now that I have it set to use LTE, it won't connect (even to fallback, I don't care about getting LTE, I would just like not to miss calls/texts because I do have voice roaming).
Firstly, check the baseband, if it's the newest. Sometimes this causes the problem. If this doesn't help, then only the ROM is the actual problem.

I did not figure it out. I went back to my home area, re-installed LineageOS and then it activated on the Sprint network fine. But I suspect if I was in roaming again it would still not work if I did a factory reset or an update while in roaming. So I guess the only "solution" I've found is to be on a home network, let the phone activate, and then you can go back to roaming area. Not much of a solution if you are not near a home area.
I use https://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/app-roaming-control-v1-0-t3267154 to re-enable national roaming.
Also had some problems getting the modul work. I had to enable modul by toggle flight mod. Also i still have to enable roaming befor i switch from wifi to data connection then i can turn roaming (international) in system off and national roaming still works.
Maybe you have to do so :fingers-crossed:
