Ever since I had gotten my Nexus One back in July 2011, I had been really pleased by the battery life. With my usage patterns, I could easily get two days on a charge, sometimes getting three comfortably. All of the sudden, about half a week ago, I noticed that the battery would discharge itself really quickly. It would go from 100% to around 30% in a day. I hadn't changed my usage patterns, nor had I installed any new apps. I went into the settings for any apps that may be loading data in the background (Twitter, Facebook, News/Weather, etc) and made sure background data was enabled, and I always turn off mobile networks (EDGE/3G) and WiFi when I'm not using them. I even went as far as wiping the phone and resetting everything, but no change in battery life. Calibrating the battery by letting it fully discharge and then charging it fully while the phone is powered off also did nothing. I'm at a total loss here. This seems inexplicable as to why the battery life is now so bad.
i change my battery every 6-8 months batteries are stupid like that i had this problem also like 5 months ago i just bought a new battery then BINGO 3-4 days on 1 full charge with every know battery tweaks if you look for battery look in the Nexus Q&A thread someone asked whats the best battery life ... hope i helped
here's the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569069
Thanks. I think I'll order a new battery, probably a standard 1400mAh battery instead of one of the larger-capacity extended batteries. I don't really want to add any more weight or thickness to my phone. If that doesn't seem to do the trick, I'll probably just eventually buy a new phone. I've been looking for something different for a while now and this will give me a good excuse to do so. Heh.
I don't want to jinx myself here, but I may have found a temporary solution. Use only 2G networks. Curiously, about two or three weeks ago, I noticed that the mobile network type has changed from HSPA to HSDPA. AT&T appears to have done some upgrades to bring "4G" to the area. I wonder if the changeover has done something to my Nexus One and now was drawing more power from the device searching for a signal? Ever since I've disabled 3G, I've been on EDGE and I've only lost ~5% battery compared to the near 25% that I had lost on HSDPA. I'll check back if I find out anymore information.
One option is to try to recalibrate the battery. There is a root app out there that allows / guides you how to do this. Just search battery calibration. Additionally, instead of using an app, what you can do is boot into a custom recovery image (preferably 4EXT touch) and wipe the 'battery stats'. Then turn the device off, charge til the LED is green and then leave on the charge for an hour after it turns green (maybe overnight?). Then run the battery full out the next day to properly calibrate it.
Yes, 2G mode only does save a lot of battery. Apps that sync in the background (IE Gmail, FB, Twitter) use battery a lot. From your post it sounded like you have them set to auto update. Disable that or force it to refresh less often. What is sounds like is that your device maybe trying to connect to cell towers but is having a harder time; this may be due to ATT's 'upgrade'. I'm not too sure about that stuff though, haha.
Just as I had expected, I believe that it is an AT&T-related issue. A friend of mine who has an Aria has been experiencing the exact same battery drain issue that I had been having.
recalibrate your battery
1.drain your battery until you get the message "powering off"
2.quickly connect your charger
3.charge it 8 hours straight..
Battery calliberated...well it worked for me...

I had the exact same problem. I had a refurbished nexus one, everything was working fine for a month then suddenly one day battery life goes from 14-16 hours to 4-6. I call customer service and search online, do all the battery pull out replace and whatever but no result. Took it to a shop, they couldn't figure out how to fix it but mentioned perhaps I should change the power strip (the black plastic card wich has the power button, camera and flash attached to it). Look at ifixit nexus one teardown for the actual part. So I bought a new power strip, replaced it and my nexus one is back to its original 12-14 hours. Not sure if this will help you, but that's what I did to fix mine.
On Friday 1 June 2012, which is Friday last week at the time of writing, I gladly updated my phone through Kies after receiving word of the UK update being available from these very forums. Over the past week, I have noticed that my battery life is considerably worse since my upgrade to the new Android version and, when hearing of people hear who manage up to 36 hours of battery life through this phone, I really want to find out what they are doing exactly. At present, I have set the brightness at 1% (the minimum) and only up it to 40% when out in bright light conditions. At home, I also use the Screen Filter app which dims the screen further (I have this set to 50% of my already 1% brightness setting) and claims to improve battery on AMOLED devices. I also have Juice Defend Ultimate running on "Aggressive" mode along with the built-in power saving mode running as well. Yet, looking on CPU Spy, my phone still does not enter deep sleep which is needed to see a real improvement in battery life as far as I am aware. I have tried restarting the phone and also plugging it back into charge before unplugging it with the screen turned on as many have recommended. Any ideas what else I can do?
Uninstall juicedefender. Its not uncommon that it drains a lot more juice than it saves.
There is must be any Application that is hogging your battery.
Install better battery state... Find that application and uninstall that.
I am getting better battery life in ICS as compared to GB...

I have that app installed, but frankly have no idea how to use it very well. From what I can tell, it is Kik Messenger which is creating a partial wake lock (but I need that to send pictures to my friends), Juice Defender which is supposedly saving battery life and biggest partial wake lock is RILJ or something. But, that is caused from a weak signal and I get that regardless of network at my house. Besides moving, I cannot alter that. As for Juice Defender, I've heard nothing but positive reviews from it. My main aim is to get deep sleep working, but how?
Install Better Battery Stat and check what app is actually causing the problem :

first ,samsung ICS is poorly made ,second you have a high chance of bricking if you wipe your phone with their official kernels so don't do it.
third ,like others said ,juice defender (and any app of this sort) doesn't work anymore (android 2.2 and up) so just uninstall it.
fourth ,not entering deep sleep is mostly due to a rouge app ,and since wiping is not an option for you you need to hunt it down manually ,use better battery status (learn how to use it!!!) and uninstall any apps you don't need.
fifth ,get some knowledge then get rid of crappy touchwiz ROM and install CM9 ,you'll see a huge improvement in terms of performance and battery life.

Okay, well this is my first proper Android device (minus an old second-hand HTC Desire which had awful storage and I used for around one month). Secondly, I do know that other ROMs offer better performance and battery life but flashing them onto my phone is something I'm not very comfortable with and surely it would also void my warranty. I've only had the phone for four weeks and don't want it wrecked already.

I'm fairly new to android as well ,had an S2 (which was so good that I only rooted it ,no custom ROMs) for 5 months before the note and that's it.
but I rooted my note the first day I got it ,and installed a custom ROM less than a week later (was a total noob at the time but I read and learnt quickly) .
then CM9 arrived and I flashed that immediately and haven't regretted it so far.
but I had no warranty to begin with so.....
note that if there is something that can wreck your shinny new note ,then it's amsung official ICS update (read the announcement sticky on ICS and bricking) .
but how experts can explain the fact i face:
With every official and custom ROM i install, even CM9, my note keeps eating battery when in use plugged to the charger... it's unbelievable... I can't understand how it happens.
by the way: i always full wipe before installing any custom/official rom.

Well, is there nothing that I can do to trigger deep sleep or improve battery life on the stock ROM first of all? Secondly, how difficult is rooting and would that void any warranty?

it can't happen ,I'd say you either have a faulty battery\charger or there is someting wrong with the phone itself
the note charges while in use and connected to a charger.

yes you can ,uninstall the violating apps ,learn to use better battery status ,you'll find that there is an app or two responsible for the wake locks ,thus preventing the phone from entering deep sleep.
or simply install every app and game that seems suspisious or poorly made ,and just keep the essential ones.
as for rooting ,it couldn't be simpler if done carefully and to the letter :
1.flash back to GB using PC ODIN
2.root it
3.backup your EFS folder (important , very important) search for it on the forums.
4. install custom ROMs (stay away from unsafe kernels please ,read the sticky thread about ICS kernels)
3. enjoy
use this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
yes there is an easy way to root while on stock ICS as per to this guide ,but I prefer you stay away from official ICS for the sole reason that it's dangerous.
remeber the key is to read and read and read ,in a month you could become a pro
on the other hand if you go the lazy way ,you could just end up with a bricked phone
also once you root ,your warranty is void ,though if you're careful you can return it to stock condition and they won't tell the difference
be careful

@Brad387
I have had mine for about 2 weeks. When I turned it on and did the initial setup it had a new software update which was ICS. Since then I have been having issues with deep sleep as well. I turned stuff on and off and it has been totally random what was preventing it from going to deep sleep.
I have done this trick that has been on this forum.
Put you phone to airplane mode.
Power it off completely
Remove battery for 20 seconds or more
put battery back in and power this thing back on
then turn off airplane mode.
This seems to have helped me get into deep sleep. BUT there have been instances of rogue crap going on. Like I was using Google maps with GPS on. When I got home and was done with my traffic mapping I turned off the GPS switch and turned off my phone. I checked an hour later and the battery had died 10% since I got home which was more than when I was driving. I checked Better Battery Stats and it showed that GPS was running that whole time. So I turned on GPS again in the toggle waited a couple seconds then turned it off again and bang it went into deep sleep. It sucks that I have to check crap on it all the time and have become a bit paranoid because the GPS glitch had my phone running pretty hot. Since then everything has been running well and deep sleeping.
There are other things I did do too and the below stuff is up to you if you wish to proceed. I rooted my phone which was very easy...at least for me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20963730&postcount=3 this is what I used with no problem.
From there you can freeze a bunch of stuff you may not use like Social Hub, Accuweather etc etc.You will need Titanium for that though and root access.
I logged out of Latitude too which was on by default for some reason.
If I remember anything else I did I will hit you back here.
Bottom line was finally yesterday I was able to get thru the entire day without needing to plug in so there is light at the end of the tunnel...I hope.
Not sure if this has been mentioned but CPU Spy lets you see if you are getting into deep sleep mode and how much time you are in it along with the other CPU mhz that its running.
Hopefully this can help out a bit because I have been in the same boat and it has been driving me mad. Sorry for all the random thoughts too...I just typed them as I remembered things.

My phone does not seem to enter Deep Sleep, but runs constantly at 200 MHz instead. At present, after turning on the built-in power saving mode (not noticing any performance differs so can't even tell what it does), running Juice Defender Ultimate on aggressive and screen filter I burn around 2% per hour if I just leave my phone locked. Is that healthy?

Actually, there is something you can do about that!
Both Vodafone and Three can supply you with a Femtocell which can greatly improved your signal at home, and uses your home broadband as backhaul.
I know, because I have them!

Battery life of my Note was horrible after upgrade to ICS, and actually already quite bad the last month on GB2.3.6 (all unrooted).
It could get quite warm and often when opening my case the screen was already on.
So I did wipe my phone, reinstalled all apps and battery life has improved immensely.
I see several warnings here about chance to brick your phone when wiping on stock ROM, but not solving the battery drain is of course no option and we don't have a guarantee from Samsung for nothing...

your phone should not be running at 200MHz when you hit the sleep/power button. So if its in your pocket and the screen is off then 200MHz is not healthy. Something is running in the background. Have you tried the airplane mode battery trick yet? What I did when that was happening to me was...turn on the airplane mode, power off the phone, pull out batt for 20 secs, put batt in and power on phone, turn off airplane mode, then go to CPU Stats and clear it, then put phone back to sleep and let it sit for a half hour or less if you cant handle that wait like I couldnt. Go back to CPU Stats and and click refresh and see if it helped and if your phone went into deep sleep.
Hi All,
Just wondered if anybody is seeing really poor battery life on their S4?
Granted, this is the first charge and I know Android devices tend to need a couple to settle in but my battery seems to be draining like God knows what.
I came from a HTC One which was pretty poor - but the S4 battery just seems to be pouring battery juice out. I'm using the I9505 on EE in the UK. I've been on wifi the entire time, though with a very low signal.
Don't know what Samsung Link is but that seems to be having a particular impact. I wonder if I have a fault? I assume Google Services is Gmail etc - although I thought that would show up as Google Sync or something.
I do have most of the gimmicky features disabled - other than the one where I can wave my hand over the lockscreen to see what notifications I have. Power saving mode is enabled and screen is on auto with the maximum set to a fairly low level.
Would be grateful for your thoughts.
Thanks
First thing is you have a truly awful network signal.
Its probably fine. I let my phones die 3 times when I get them , sometimes they sit at 1% for 2 hours or more, so that will give the phone a better estimation of its battery usage and such.
Thanks folks.
Yes, the signal is bad but the drain was the same at home where I had a full signal and wifi connected.
Do you know how to disable Samsung Link or this Google Services thing?
Cheers
Had mine run GLBenchmark when I was laying down in bed. Found it still on around 7 hours later, the screen still on (after I realized I fell asleep), and was around 10%.
Again, that's with the screen on all 7 hours.

From screenshots you can clearly see that Goggle Services and Samsung Link are eating your battery...
Keep AutoSync and Google Now - OFF
My phone have great battery life, lost 12% within 4hrs, 1hr screen ON, brightness up to 50%, WiFi ON all the time, average reception...
Google Services used only 2% and is on the bottom of the list, NO sign of Samsung Link on my stats so you must have some apps running in background...

Forgive me for being stupid, but turning auto sync off stops my Gmail getting push and also the calendar syncing, doesn't it? There no way around that?
Google Now was already off. I only sync Google Mail, Calendar, Chrome and nothing else. All the others are left unticked.
I can't figure a way of turning that Samsung Link thing off - there is no option in the settings.
Any other ideas?
Thanks
Horrible battery life.
i consider myself well versed in phones. In the past year i have had a Gnex, HTC One m7, and a moto x. Just got my s5 last week, and im lucky to get 12 hours battery life with 1.5 hours of on screen time. I have all the gestures and 'smart' stuff turned off. i dont get it. I have a handful off aps that i use, and have used on every phone. the only thing i can think of is perhaps its the google now launcher? has anyone else on here gotten HORRIBLE battery life with that installed?
That is bad indeed. Ive been on wifi most of today, different locations, and still have 30% right now with close to 6hrs screen time.
I have the GNL installed and I have amazing battery. I have location on "GPS Only" and photo auto-upload turned off. Everything else is on. What's your signal like? Worst case, try a factory reset. Oh, and turn off Google Now.
Also, why does your phone have 7bars instead of 4 or 5? Is that a sprint thing?
it looks like your system doong a lot of stuff, your screen On time should always be hiher and number 1. have you done anything to your cellphone? apps, xposed modules? custom roms?

Not rooted, so nothing with exposed chewing up ram. I have GPS set to "battery saver". My signal at work is kinda 'meh' on LTE but 5 bars on 3g. My 4g speeds are about 15Mbps so it's not like the phone is spinnimg its wheels looking for data. I turned off location sharing from Google. So we will see how today goes.
Is 'GPS only' more battery friendly then 'battery saver' for location?
Attached is my app drawer. Nothing crazy...nothing that should be wake locking the phone....
Edit: I switched photos auto upload to only on WiFi only while charging last night as well. oh, I also charged to 100% last night with phone off using a USB 2.0 cable for a slower charge. If today goes poorly I'm going to try another battery, next step is hard reset with no 3rd party apps, then replace phone :\. I'll keep it updated.
trying a new kernel now to see if it changes anything as a test
Please keep us updated. I'm in the exact same boat as you.
Its "better" but not like it was before the update. Lost 20 % in 5 hours with 50min screen time
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
much better
So its been much better today. See attached screen shots. Its not perfect but I have a big handful of apps syncing so 20hours on a charge is good for me. I mean, my moto-x got 20hrs, but that was on a highly optimized s4 pro processor only using a 4.7"amoled screen @ 720p. So if this 5"+ 1080p monster can get 20 with everything I throw at it im happy.
I think the biggest thing I did was settings - location - location services - google location reporting - off for this device.
The reason is GNL (GEL) was accessing location like crazy, so that helped.
I also made some other tweaks as stated in above posts, sorry I didnt do it scientifically by only changing one thing each day to pinpoint what it was. I turned off all of sammys 'smart' features and charged it to 100% on a 1A charger with a usb 2.0 cable with the device off. And turned off various other settings. Hope this helps.
The best thing I did for battery life was disable my Samsung account. The difference was incredible.

Also, why does your phone have 7bars instead of 4 or 5? Is that a sprint thing?

Yes they do. Kill the Samsung account with fire.
Although some things like the default Browser only sync with a Samsung account, not with Google.
ok, I will tell you, battery saver mode is better than gps only mode. usb 2.0 or 3.0 doesnt affect charging speed, its just for data transfer speed.
maybe your google account was syncing or maybe your gallery was syncing.
this kills and uses a lot of data and battery, also facebook... please do a favor and turn every notification off. also, use greenify to cancel all apps syncing. well only the ones that you do not use.

No it isn't. Unless you use navigation all day, GPS Only mode is by FAR more battery friendly. The battery saving mode turns on Google location tracking and all that stuff...you know, the popup that you agree to each time. GPS only keeps that off which saves your battery a lot more. It's the worst named setting i've ever seen.

You can`t use Google maps navigation with power saving mode that`s why I go back to my high accuracy setting however this didn`t change my battery stand by time by much I usually could go around 1 day and 20 hours on 1 charge depending on how much i use my phone with around 2 hours on screen time and some calls for probably 1 hour.
@op what software version you use because in the latest firmware for the G900F there is a battery improvement made so I do suggest to check your phone for software updates.
Other then that the battery life depends on how often you use your phone and for what.

Im on build 49h. However when i go to checl for a sw update I get this messege about unauthorized software. Im not rooted, no bootloader unlock, nothing. Ive never even plugged this into a desktop. I run gel and have selected ART in dev options as well as increased transitions to .5 and have usb debug enabled. Wtf?
Fixed: ART was the issue. I hate you samsung. Smh.
Edit: art was the issue with the "unknown software" issue, not the battery life/op
Hey everyone. My son is a Type 1 Diabetic and I am using my Sprint S4 to piggyback with his glucose monitor and OTG cable to upload the data to a mongolab database. I am looking for a complete barebones rom - all I will use the phone for is a conduit to send data from the device it's plugged into.
Looking for totally stripped rom with no background apps or services to maximize battery life to 15+ hours.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
-Josh
BTW, the uploader is called Nightscout if anyone wants to learn about an amazing grassroots movement!
I think the simplest solution would be to use a stock ROM. Put it in airplane mode to turn the radios off (you can select wifi on in airplane mode if needed) and turn off GPS. My GS4 discharges very slowly with the radios turned off. I would guess you could easily get 15 hours out of the battery, probably quite a bit more. The bloatware apps included with the stock ROM wouldn't noticeably affect battery life.
Here is a link to a list of all freezable and removable apps/files. I suggest to always freeze via Titanium Backup before deleting anything.

It's not completely stripped down, but getting close.
