In about 2 hours my battery drops down to 50%, anybody have any ways to lessen up the battery usage?
Also is the back of the phone and bottom from supposed to be that hot.
2hr 50% isn't normal.
and yes, back of the phone gets hot while it's in use.
So if your phone is hot even though you turned it off, means it's running a data heavy app.
Ways to help fix your problems.
1. Download and install an app called, BsB Tweaks. enable battery saving mode.
2. Turn your brightness down. Automatically adjust is a great way to save some juice.
3. take out your microSD from the phone to see if it's been draining battery by accessing it constantly.
4. search the forums and download NRG's Doc disable cab. It'll disable your phone from accessing the sd card needlessly.
5. switch to EDGE network when you're not using data heavy app (internet browsing, bing navigation, etc). EDGE isn't that bad in the first place.
if none of the methods does not work, call in and replace the phone.

Stock or custom rom?
if custom which rom?
what radio are you using?
is the phone in sleep mode during this two hours or are you on the phone?
With this info we might be able to help you.
Stock ROM
No radio usage really, just whatever was on the phone
Sometimes the screen turns off if it isn't in use for about 10-15 seconds
Also I was using the internet for most of the time, and just checking out the apps and such.

It's here at xda...just search BsB Tweaks, you'll find it easily.
No, installing cabs won't void your warranty. Only replacing the SPL will do that, which you'll only do if you want to flash a custom ROM or different radio.

which stock rom? If you haven't updated to 2.13 you might want to look into it as the radio will be updated also which might be your issue.
You could also turn off 3G which saves battery life, if your connected to bluetooth or wifi this is also going to help take battery life out of your HD2.
& are you listening to music while doing all of this. it is very possible to lose 50% within those two hours based on your usage on this phone. There are multiple things to do to save battery but they come with a cost. for example don't have your phone retreat your message as often. I set mine for every 15 minutes as I usually need my messages but it does wear down much faster than when I had it set for every 1 hour.
Just reviewed several posts and looks like there's not a lot of clarification on extending battery life on the Epic 4G.
Based on what i've read here, its possible to extend battery life with the following ?
GB update (sprint released rom or modded roms)?
Screen Dims, Auto syncing disabling, etc?
PRL update (not searching for towers)?
Data disablement?
I hope the GB and mod updates are the real answer.
The fact that anyone suggests to disable your data as a way to save the battery is mind boggling to me. Why would I have a smart phone if I had to disable data to save the battery (aside from maybe being on a plane or something where you HAVE to disable it anyway).
Look for randomking's thread in the Q/A section in epic development... the link is also in his signature, but he gives great advice on how to save battery properly.

I feel like I've tried everything but at this point I've resigned myself to poor battery life.
I have two Exchange accounts, gmail plus I use Yahoo and Live as well as a personal email account. Not to mention weather updates. I've got a 1amp charger in my car. A desktop cradle with a 1amp charger at my desk and another 1amp charger in a cradle on the table next to my favorite chair at home. At night I use the .5amp Samsung charger in a third cradle.
Basically, when I'm not using it its charging.
When I get up I automatically tap my belt case to make sure I don't walk off without it. I need it 31 and I need to know I get all email immediately and that I can be on a call for a couple of hours if I need to be.
But yeah, I wish I could just charge overnight and be able to depend on 24+ hours of battery life.

This is how I feel as well. I don't understand why you would want to have this phone if you are going to turn off all of its features. I don't undervolt. I am overclocked to 1400 and I have GPS on most of the time. I also use Bluetooth fairly regularly. I did spend $2 to get "Bloat Freezer" app to freeze the apps that run even when I am not using them. I also have a second battery. I can't obsess over the battery. I want performance and stability which I have. When changing ROMs, charge to full and wipe battery stats in recovery as well.

I'm looking to get another battery.
Right now I always have wifi on downloading stuff like 24/7 brightness all the way down(come on its not like you need it up anyway). I'm always overclocked to 1.2, and not undervolted and I don't use dark backgrounds, and have everything set to sync every 4-6 hours. I charge maybe twice a day never completely until night time.

If you live in a poor service area of town like I do, typically avg 3 bars all day, and often less...you are doomed.
I've tried all the tips, but the constant tower polling rakes my bettery over the coals. This is why I've adopted the multiple battery approach (with an external charger of course).

^^^ This. If not for rooting and Roam Control I'd have to almost not use my phone at work, and even then even Verizon's signal is low/spotty though to a much smaller degree in the building than Sprint's.
I do a number of things that are convenient for me.
I turn auto-syncing off. I don't need it always searching for updates in my life. I can spend the 3 seconds when I open the app.
I only put it on wi-fi/gps/4g when I need them. Sure, they can be on, but they use battery and it also takes seconds to turn them on.
I use auto-brightness. It works for me.
I do a lot of stuff:
- Leave GPS/wifi/4g/bluetooth turned off until I need to use them.
- Set screen brightness to the minimum, in both the OS and the browser.
- Use Titanium Backup's 'freeze' to disable bits of the OS I don't need, like 'DRM content'.
- Set up non-push email addresses to be forwarded to push email addresses (like gmail) automatically so that the phone itself does very little polling.
Doing all this, I can leave data on and easily have it last the day, every day, or turn data off and use it for a podcast player with BT headphones for a full eight hours.
Green power helps A LOT btw... its better than juice defender ultimate.

Freezing DRM saves a good portion for me. I also use Startup Cleaner to stop apps from automatically opening (not freezing) as soon as I startup my phone (swype, messaging, internet, etc). I'm not getting fantastic battery savings, but I've seen a difference doing this.
What is DRM?
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/drm/package-summary.html
It sounds like it would use some juice, but dunno that freezing may be most efficient for apps.
Dataswitch app by TomatoX. Its a widget that turns off 3G. I keep a Wifi on/off toggle on my homescreen as well. I connect often enough to get all my emails pushed through and what not so it doesn't feel like I'm crippling myself in the name of a little battery life. I went eight hours today and got home with 83% worth of battery. I prefer widgets over longpressing the power button personally.
These are a collection of the best suggestions I can make.
And no, turning data off is not one of them. Although disabling sync is.
DRM is a service for digitally verifying online store bought or rented audio/video. Itunes is a great example as the most annoying implementation of this concept. The problem is, that on our phones it runs constantly trying to verify files, whether you have any or not. If you don't think you need it, freeze it. Removing it completely has lead to problems. If you don't want to buy an app to do it, the terminal emulator commands are included in this thread.
PS: Currently I have not found one person that can top the best EC05 roms in battery life with a GB rom.
ok so i tried a couple of recommendations and i have some positive feedback!
I got green power and startup cleaner. After changing startup cleaner and using it to disable quite a few apps as well as drm and other non essentials it helped with my memory and apps running in the background.
I also tweaked green power settings to leave on the 3g and turned off the wifi on / off option (so i could do it instead of green power) and lt do its thing.
Excellent battery life. I left it on used it for a bit then let it sit and check a couple of emails, got a few pushed emails via gmail and did a few web searches.
i'm at 80% since 1pm. that's unbelievable yet that's the way it should be!
these apps / tweaks have helped. i do need push email and use push calendar from hotmail exchange.
i really wish the phone could do this on its own but i'll settle for this alternative using 2 apps at this time.
i hope gingerbread helps us all without the need for apps but i would probably still use them because of the substantial battery life gains.
Randomking is right.
All our efforts are minimal compared to what gb does....at least in cooked form
Rk..what custom rom do you recommed?

I think that's everybodys dream, to be ale to run this bad boy for 24 hrs straight. Unfrtunately were a long ways from that. Especialy from the way it sounds like you run your phone your going to becharging multiple times per day..that's just part of being a power user with a smartphone.
I gota agree though, fo the life of me i don't know why people disable data, or cripple thir phones ability just to eek out another hr of battery, this is a huge phone, with a big power hungry (beautiful) screen, you knew this when you picked it out. It can do pretty much any function that a laptop can. Use it like it was meant to be used, and dont fret so much over the battery.

Great News!
Battery life is now up considerably without the use of 3rd party apps.
I may consider using green power to get more extended battery life...but here's how i did it.
1. Update to EF02 Gingerbread OS (on a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of ease of upgrade...its a 2....1 being the most simple). It was as easy as download the app and let it upgrade your phone.
I'll post the video link here it was VERY Elementary folks.
2. Battery life in Gingerbread is great! Appears to have a better memory manager and much more smooth transition between screens, apps, etc.
Randomking was correct about battery life and adding all the apps we had to for Froyo just to get mediocre batter life.
Hope someone can help me solve this issue.
The Setup
I recently went out of the country and before I left I unlocked my GS4 following from wonderhowto[dot]com
Arrived to my Carribean destination, bought a prepaid SIM, popped her in and everything worked great.
Problems started when I flew back into Miami. I removed my prepaid SIM and installed my old one, changed my APN name back
and rebooted the phone. Decided to plug it into my laptop (USB3.0) to get some extra juice before the next flight and I noticed that
the battery was actually going down and quite quickly too, about 1% every 3 minutes. The phone was also doing a lot of connecting and disconnecting from the laptop even though it was not being moved.
I use two batteries which I have an external charger for , so this didn't slow me down too much.
After a few days, I thought maybe by unlocking the phone I had left it in some "roaming" state where it was eating up battery looking for its signal, so I decided that I'd restore it to the nandroid backup ROM Manager created before I did the unlock procedure. OH NUGGETS!
Things got ugly , quick!. In the process of trying to restore got MD5 mismatch error, so I went back to 3 previous backups before all of which said either "MD5 mismatch" or unable to open .zip -None of them worked.
Thankfully I had saved a copy of the backup folder in clockworkmod to my PC and tried to load that, it started and then get to writing /data and said error writing data.
I rebooted. Bootloop.
After a few hours of attempts with KIES, and some well timed cold beer deliveries from my wife, I finally got the phone back to stock version.
Rooted it again, motochopper, And loaded GoldenEye Rom v 8.0 . Still slow to little or no charging.
Loaded PACMAN and noticed something that should be mentioned.
Pacman rom has its own little battery widget that sits in the top tray and shows the %. It glows green from bottom to top to show that it is charging. I noticed on every couple of cycles, the battery meter would flash red for a quick second before turning green and sweeping up.????
Went back to a backup of GoldenEye8.
The current status
The phone is currently plugged in to the stock charger (2A) and stock cable. It has charged up only about 3% in 20 minutes time. I have it in battery saving mode with wifi on , and EVERYTHING else turned off.
Battery info says:
Temp 87.3 F
Voltage 4033mV
Plugged True
Charging
Li-ion
Health:Good
Charge Type : AC
Battery use shows 62% of battery use coming from SCREEN (Yes I have auto-brightness set, and NO live wallpaper)
Anyone have some good input?
Maybe its a bad cord? Or bad USB port/connection on the phone it self...
Sent from my SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
62% screen usage is normal, I sometimes see over 70% with my brightness all the way up.
Make sure apps aren't keeping it from going idle and staying active.
Battery temp. seems a bit high. General causes of that are a faulty cable.
Download greenify and hibernate any apps that may be running unnoticeably in the background.
If your kernel allows fast charging (disables access to phone storage while fast charging is on) enable it while charging if you're not using the phone.
Play with CPU and GPU governors in your kernel to save battery life. I.E: I put my CPU governor on "powersave" while idle and not using the phone for anything extensive.

Tried two other cords, but they just made it worse. They actually caused it to look like its charging but the battery level was going down.
Your second suggestion is probably right, but i'd like to exhaust my options first before having to restore and send to creator. I do find that with the stock cable and no external case on it stays plugged in well and doesn't make any "interrupted connection" noises.
With stock charger and cable and minimal functions running its charging about 1% every 4 minutes. ( Approx 6.5 hrs to full charge )
I feel like the hardware must be working in order to do that, and that the software is putting some kind of excessive strain on it. Possibly?
The battery use still shows, screen as the major contributor at 61% , so I switched from a really high resolution static background to a low res one. ( results to follow)
Downloading WanamLite now and going to try that out, also going to try performing the unlock procedure I did in reverse order and see what that does. Keep you posted. Open to suggestions.

Doubt it, but maybe you can try going from touchwiz to aosp. Very much more lightweight, though you'll lose some s4 features. If it is faulty hardware/battery I'd just save yourself the trouble and swap it for a new one; or try another battery. I guess you can try doing a compete wipe and flashing a fresh ROM with a kernel you know will definitely run smooth with it.

Already tried the second battery, no luck. Any suggestion on the rom/kernel combo?
I use task650 with kt's kernel and it's excellent. Though it's all opinion, there is many great combinations. Some ROMs come packaged with their own kernel or a custom one.

IMO: those temps are pretty normal.
Why you don't try a bone stock rom and see how it respond for a few hours, if the stock rom behaves the same, probably you will need to send it for warranty.
I got a S4 i9505 with albe95 S6 port ROM. I've tweaked the settings to pretty much disable all background activity so there's no syncing, no GPS, no bluetooth no NFC etc. I've got airplane mode on 24/7 with WiFi turned on. I've also installed Greenify and System Tuner Pro (I have root) and disabled a few GooglePlayServices services and stuff. Followed a tutorial for that. Looking at the settings app, I've got 40% battery remaining and have been on battery for 2 hours 40 minutes. Probably slept for 30-45 minutes and when it was on, I go on chrome, mess with Theme engine and some other light stuff. Now I just waited 20-30 minutes and it drained 4% screen off. I waited 5 minutes and it drained 1%. Is there an app that runs in the background and I leave my phone screen off overnight to tell me what processes are using the most battery and then disable those processes? I've tried to google it but none have helped. I've disabled Gtalk and a bunch of other processes, no luck. About to download Titanium and mess around with Greenify a bit more. I'm new to Android, reason I don't like Android is it's battery life. My iPod touch 5's 910mAh battery lasts 5 hours watching YouTube, surfing the web and light gaming (Clash of Clans) while the S4's 2600 mAh battery lasts 3-4 hours. Triple the size but less battery life?
Android's root is a lot more complicated than iOS, we just go to Cydia and download tweaks like an app from the Play Store. But yeah, any apps you guys use to check background processes using battery?
It's called BetterBatteryStats.
I don't think you will find it on the play store. Or if it's free there. There is a free version on the forums here. And I mean free, not cracked or anything.
And there's more to battery life than just mAh. Your iPod has a smaller screen and a smaller resolution. Which means less work for the GPU.

Right so I messed around with BBS and I discovered the different tabs. Looked at Kernel wakelocks and Partial wakelocks. Did some research and PowerManagementService is a big one. Was told to go to partial wakelock and found RILS and RILJ0. Did some more research on that and it's related to radio and wireless stuff. (Radio Interface Layer) Did some MORE research and apparently my modem is the problem. Someone suggested me to get "GetRIL" from Play Store and see if the two ... things match but GetRIL either isn't compatible or it doesn't work. Now problem is, I have Airplane mode on 24/7 and WiFi enabled so cellular should b turned off, right?
With airplane mode on yes, network should be turned off.
The modem can be changed anyway. So maybe you just have to update the modem.
Also try a different rom.

I read that ROMS and kernels have no affect on battery life other than disabling sync and background stuff in the settings app. Only time it will affect battery life is if it's badly written.
So if cellular is turned off, why is "Cell Standby" the second most draining thing behind "Screen"? All the websites I looked at just say "Turn airplane on and wifi on" but what I'm really looking for is to completely disable cellular with "System Tuner", or do something with root permissions to force stop cellular. I've got no SIM card installed.
Not true. Both kernel and ROM can have a significant effect on battery life. For the kernel, a custom kernel can improve battery life by allowing the processor to be undervolted, thus using less power per CPU cycle. The ROM could also have battery-saving features, e.g. Doze in Android 6.0. The ROM could also have battery-sapping bugs.
The modem is separate from the ROM and kernel. It will have its own enhancements and is updated frequently, so you should update it.
If you dial *#*#4636#*#* you should get to a menu where you have the option to turn off radio. But that's probably the same thing as airplane mode.
And roms and kernels do have an impact on battery life. I once flashed a kernel that drained my battery very quickly. The same rom without that kernel was fine and with great battery life.
So, as I said, consider changing your rom. Just to see if it is rom related or not.

I updated my modem and bootloader from the same thread as my ROM, not sure if it did anything but I've managed to raise battery life from ~4 hours to ~7 hours just non-stop google chrome, theme-ing, downloading apps and trying to get better battery life. Also watched some YouTube videos.
I actually flashed this ROM because of themes, specifically the Avengers theme. Also there's a few pure black themes, did some research and pure black actually gives your battery ~40% more juice. Real world usage will probably be at least 15-20% more battery. But I'm still trying to find out how to fully disable cellular, anybody know? I've got root and Titanium Backup. I'm not sure what to freeze though and "Cell standby" continues to be the second most draining thing in the settings app.

Dialing that says "Not registered with network" because I have no SIM installed. Cellular would kill my battery but even without a SIM, cellular still is active because of emergency.
I've googled everything I can think of, within 2 days I've increased my battery by at least 60% but cellular is driving me nuts. It's using ~20 of my battery while using my phone, that's 20% plus another ~20% once I find a way to get a pure black theme that works in third-party apps as well for my AMOLED display. Also, titanium backup isn't able to convert Google Play Services or GSF into a app so I can greenify it. It just processes and processes.
There is no theme that can make all apps black. Dark material makes many apps pitch black, but it's for CM based roms only.
You can get the pro version of greenify and maybe xposed. Then you can greenify system apps. Including Google play stuff. But greenify works only when screen is off. When screen is on, the greenified apps will run again.
Or use titanium backup to freeze everything Google play related, until you need it. But doing so will require you to input your gmail account again.
You might also freeze the phone app and anything else related to network. Since you're not going to use the phone for calls. Maybe that will solve cell issue.
Right, I have no idea how I did it but my phone for the past hour and a half has not dropped a single percent and has mostly been in deep sleep. No more wakelocks too, only thing I noticed was a alarm from Google in BBS but didn't mind that too much. Excited to see how much it will drop overnight.
Also, do you know the largest battery for the S4 that I can buy on amazon.ca? I don't want a case or a separate battery, I just want a battery that's more than 2600 mAh. So far, I think the ZeroLemon 3000 mAh battery is the biggest but I heard it's got no NFC. I don't use NFC or anything wireless other than WiFi but could you give me a quick explanation of what this does cause apparently it's a part of the battery itself.
You know that thing where you put two phones together (back to back) and it transfers data from one phone to the other? That is NFC. You can basically send web pages, app pages in the google play store and phone numbers with it. Just bring whatever you want to send on the screen and touch your phone on another phone to send it.
You can't sent actual apps and files.
The connection is established through connectors on the battery. That's why it won't work if the battery doesn't have one. It also is a method to verify the autenticity of batteries. Fake batteries don't usually have working NFC.
Now, the biggest S4 battery I heard of is about 9000 mAh. The second is 7500 mAh. I don't know if you can find them on Amazon.ca.
Use amplify and limit all "safe to limit" wakelocks.
Hi there, for the last week or so, with no new apps being downloaded prior to issue, I have noticed a significant battery drain by Android OS (39%) and inside it showed incredible Keep awake time of 16h 50m (though the phone screen is off). For reference, the screen time (25% battery usage) so far is 1h 31m. I have installed and given root access to GSam Battery Monitor (its root companion is activated too). The program indicates that Kernal (Android OS) is taking up my space but I was hoping instead it would be able to give the direct app that is eating up my battery. I have tried restarting it twice and after letting the battery run off completely and fully charging it before turning it back on.... no dice.
S4 - SGH-i337M (jfltecan/jflte)... verified root... Android 4.4.2
SlimROM-4.4.2.build.4-OFFICIAL-3650
Build number: slim_jfltecan-userdebug 4.4.2 KVT49L 3650 test-keys
Kernal: 3.4.82-KT-SGS4-gb0a91ad
Recovery is via TWRP
I know there may be suggestions to turn off GPS, WiFi, etc, etc... but I'd rather not do that due to the fact the phone life was absolutely fine w/ them on... I'd like to fix the root of the problem instead of working around it. I haven't made any changes to phone settings for a month. Reformat is a last resort but want to exhaust options prior to.
Any help appreciated, thanks.
It seems that the only way to have figured it out is by disabling individual apps and see if there is any improvement in battery life and drop in Android OS wake time and battery use.... After checking the 4th app of possibility, it seems like KiK was the culprit. Just going to remove the app as I haven't used it much. Maybe an update for the app occurred causing this to happen. One work around for those who want to keep the app that's causing the issue and minimize the battery drain, you could just go to the app's system settings and do a Force Stop and the program will be off and then turn the app back on whenever you need it and then turn it off again via Force Stop. It's a app issue, not anything you can really do about it except downgrade or uninstall the app.
