Which ROM and Kernel do you prefer (for daily use), and why?

MODS: No, please don't close this yet. This is not a "Best ROM" thread in my opinion. I've tried my fair share of ROM's, I'm just curious what ROM people prefer and what kind of aspects of a ROM people prefer. Same for kernels. So it's not about finding the best, it's about what people like, and why. It interests me. Still don't agree? Well then we have different opinions and you can close the thread.

SO, back to the thread. The title says it all. If you would choose a ROM and kernel for daily use, what would you use? Would you pick X because it's easy to use, has great battery life and a minimal design, is built with the Samsung framework etc? Or would you pick Y because you can fiddle with things, it has lots of special apps and is incredibly stable, is based on AOSP/AOPK, etc?
I'm just curious about your preferences, type away!

Why are you like that... Don't be so negative man. I know what kind of ROM and kernel I need and I download+edit my ROMs/kernels accordingly. If I change my opinion, I change my kernel/ROM.
Ok then, me for example:
I bought my new SGSIII and first flashed the very popular Siyah kernel. However, I don't like being mainstream Then I used Speedmod for a while because it's a very stable and battery saving kernel, but I was missing the tweaks and OC/UV. It's also based on pegasusq while I prefer lulzactiveq. Now I'm trying Perseus, still seeing what I can do with that.
As a ROM I'm using DarkyROM, but it's a bit too heavy for my liking. I'm going to use VikingWay since that's very light, and I'll see what happens. I've also got Complex-D lined up for testing. I don't really use AOSP ROMs because I love Sammy's camera and agenda software (yeah I really do like them ) and I can't use those on AOSP ROMs.

Crdroid is just a great rom loads of customisations.
Perseus kernel is a goos choice for my performance and battery life.

Well, neither are a ROM, and neither are best or worse. It is all about what you are looking for in a kernel

Troll thread? There are stickies if you're being serious.
Each thread respective to the developer will have a summary of their kernels.
Pros and cons can be read in the threads as both are fairly new for the Nexus 10. You won't have to read too many.
I'm using KTmanta as it doesn't give me reboots on kaos rom. I was on Franco on PA but the instability was too much.

It all depends on your specific needs. I use RasSaber + franco.Kernel, but I can't say it's the best (I haven't tested every other ROM/Kernel combination) or if it'll be the best for you. I prefer minimal customizations with speed, but others want customization and speed, others just customization, etc.

Yea they are all great kernel, it is just a matter of finding what you feel is best for you. I mean I jump around between all three kernels of Trinity, KTmanta, and Franco love using them all and I bought their apps. Each one offer something different, but in the end it all depends on how it is for you. As for me I went back to KTmanta from Franco using CarbonRom. There is no best just what is good to you.

Hello guys, I have just bought a Nexus 4 and I'd really apreciate your help as I want to become a more advanced Android user.
I've installed 'PA' as my first 'custom ROM', which many Nexus 4 users recommended me. And I quite like it. Though I don't really see much use of Hybrid properties! I mean I quite like the ROM/UI as it is by default. The other feature being 'Pie controls' which I really don't find handy enough and don't you think it slows down the reaction time I mean it's gesture based! (long clicking then gesturing the finger towards desired key takes more time ). The one feature I liked the most is 'Halo'. It's sheer beauty of Android UI and multitasking.
I've installed Franco's kernel. My previous android phone had locked bootloader so I'm not really familiar with the kernel thing. Still I am quite surprised that it doesn't have much governors and I/O schedulers which I was familiar with because of XDA.
I've flashed the animation mod. Though PA comes with Awsome Beats I flashed NexusLouder soundmod but I don't really see any difference. (Please tell me what I'm doing wrong)
So can you guys tell me your fav Custom ROM + Custom Kernel formation with your average screen on time?
Any specific mods I should try out?
Any Nexus related tips and tricks?
Should I underclock and/or undervolt?

Illusion it really fast and its the best ROM to me hands down. I can get 4-5 hours screen time with matrix kernel

There's already a "which rom is everyone using" thread under "nexus 4 general"
There are not many "tips" you will figure out the most by yourself and there is even a pretty good FAQ on the paranoid android g+ page, they link to their page in their thread
I prefer faux kernel never had any problems but that's a matter of taste if you know what underclocking over clocking and undervolting is you will figure out yourself what you need as a daily driver and what isn't for you.

If you don't want or need Hybrid mode then I would also look into CyanogenMod. For me it's just the right amount of customizations and a large Dev community creating kernels and other mods for it.

For someone who has never owned a Nexus device, I say this. Give it some time to soak in. Enjoy the 100% stock experience on amazing hardware.
Personally I find it strange that android users simply default to installing a custom ROM on a brand new device. Stock has come a long way. Give it a go before taking the leap into your capable device
(Maybe it's just me though)

I would advice you to try SentinelRom with its stock kernel. I heard it provides most longlife battery.
Then try to use it with Semaphore kernel

Yeah I understand what you're saying and agree with you. I used stock for almost 2 weeks, but I was very used to with quick settings panel that I had to switch to other ROM, on the top of that I found Halo very amusing so made the switch with no regrets!

Never heard of the ROM and kernel you mentioned. Well no surprise there as I am new to Nexus 4! Thanks I will surely try those.

Ah then I apologize. I've seen quite a few people who just ignore stock out of the box and go straight to flashing a custom ROM.

I prefer AOKP (official) because, toggle setup and navbar height; Faux kernel for some mild undervolting, sound enhancements, and color adjustments. I keep everything else as close to stock as possible.

Well I have used Franco's kernel and I liked the way it changed my screen quality and I used to get 5 hours of screen on time which was sufficient. Haven't tried Faux's kernel yet but I have been told that Faux and Franco share some kind of rivalry. How is Faux's kernel different from Franco's? Is there any other kernel which takes good things from both the kernels?

Can you guys tell me which stable ROM has the best customizations? I tried Carbon and it was pretty good, but there are some bugs. Can you guys suggest me some other ROM, should be stable and rich in features. i have heard good things about Xylon ROM!

There is sort of a rivalry and Franco kernel is great but I personally have had better luck with Faux, that and it runs smooth on all my devices.

I like the Faux/AK hybrid kernel. It has a good combination of performance and battery. As for Mods, check the themes & apps section. There are mods to change your halo, lockscreen lock, softkeys.

[Q] General questions from a new owner

Hey guys, I recently bought a Nexus 4 (I will get it tomorrow, but will have to wait more for screen protectors and case) and coming from an Xperia T it's like I'm a kid in a candy shop; all those kernels and ROMs, my head is spinning.
So my plan is to enjoy stock Android for 15 minutes and then root/unlock the device right away. Now, couple questions for you guys:
1, I've seen some Linaro builds of both ROMs and kernels here and there. Does it speed up the phone much? Does it make it worse (see: overheating)? Also, I don't know if I can run a stock toolchain ROM with a Linaro kernel or vice versa. How about that?
2. Regarding the kernels, I'll never stick to stock so will change to a custom one. I heard faux's and franco's (remember the latter from his very first release on the Optimus One ) are the best ones on the market and they both have customization apps. Now for what I've seen, faux's kernel provides more customization on the app, but don't know how does it perform in real-life situations, nor I do with franco's (altough I tend to prefer this one for the per-app settings). Could you guys give me some informations about this?

1. 4.2.2 ROMs and Kernels are inteechangable. You can use any kernel with any ROM, even the stock one. However, with 4.3 , you have to match the build number of the ROM with the kernel type.
Sidenote : The Nexus 4 does not normally overheat. The glass gets warm because it's a good heat conductor, and pulls the heat out. Don't worry about it.
2. While Franco seeks to be the perfect balance between performance and battery life, faux gives you a choise: either performance or battery life, or both, in a balanced way.

I was in a similar situation as you are about a week ago. I came from a Galaxy Nexus and couldn't wait for my Nexus 4 to arrive. I too spent a lot of time in the Development forum trying to figure out which ROM would work well for my needs. In the past, I have never run stock Android. However, that was before the launch of 4.3.
Right now, I am still running stock (a whole week later!) and am really enjoying the smooth experience. With root, I can use Xposed framework to implement the few mods that I like.
Overall, I am very happy with the device. I'd give stock a try - at least a day or two, and see if it meets your needs as well.

Sorry, but this is "what is the best rom/kernel" thread. Try them out for yourself and see what works for you. You mentioned some of them so just flash them first and see how they work, they're free. Personally I like franco and semaphore kernels, Neo is a good kernel for performance too, for roms I stick to the big names like CM, AOKP, SlimRoms and Paranoid.

Try slimbean, you probably remeber popdog's slimbean for p500, it is 10% of real slimbean on good device You will not need any custom kernel with it.

Kernel 1 v 1: Franco kernel vs Elemental X

Mainly heard about these two when looking for kernels. But which one would you prefer if you had to choose?

How bout you just try them both out? All of these kernels devs are great and a topic like this shouldn't be made in my opinion, so you should just try them both out and pick the one that suits you best.

i use elementax, mostly because i can oc to 3033mhz stable. but both franco and elementalx are great kernels. but it would all depend what you are looking for.

I've tried both kernels on multiple phones and roms. Personally I like franco, but I've supported both devs by purchasing their apps. Without these guys we wouldn't be able to be crack flashers.

on multiple phones it wouldnt matter, they arent nexus 6 . and yes, they are very good developers. and yes, there are even more of them here on xda

I wish we could get some @ktoonsez love. It was/is a solid kernel as well.

I always used ElementalX kernel on my old HTC One M7, it was great. In spite of that, I'm actually using Code_Blue on the Nexus 6, mostly as it is well-known for its good impact on the battery life... and it has just been updated!

i paid for both franco and elemental app.
but in the end i use leankernel.

You are seriously missing go out if you limit yourself to just those two, there are so many great kernels for shamu it's almost too much. My personal favorite is lean kernel, but the others are all good. Try several out, and use them for at least a few days each. Also, make sure you are ONLY changing the kernel to keep everything else constant.

necessary its not, but it does let me enjoy the phone that much more. plus it doesnt really affect my battery life, since i see from 5.5-6.5 hours sot every day at 3033mhz/300mhz. its just a keeping me happy sort of thing, thats all

Elemental all the way. They are indeed all great kernels though.
