[Q] Dialer App On AOSP/CM ROMs - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hey guys!
Does anybody have any idea why only the TW/Stock dialer works on my phone despite trying multiple AOSP/CM ROMs, kernels, PRL/Firmwares, and recoveries? I'm having tons of trouble finding others with this problem. The CM-style dialers all glitch and will not allow the input of keys from the phone/dialer app and will on some roms black the screen out completely despite my using the home button to minimize the app. In a few ROMs I've had to hard reboot the phone to get it out of the call screen. In others, only the dialer/phone app itself freezes up and the screen glitches with mild to moderate system ui problems.

Anybody? Or maybe I could provide some more info to anyone who has questions that we might figure out what the dilly is, here?

Dirty flashing? I don't know why you're having this issue but I have had issues in some roms where the aosp dialer come up blank with no digits.
What I did was search for blacked out dialer apks. Grabbed one for aosp and one for TW. Each time I go to a new rom I just overwrite the dialer apk, change permission reboot and good to go. Maybe that could be of some help maybe not. Just an idea and good luck

Thanks. Yeah, it's hard to explain exactly what happens, but it's not involving the omission of digits or lack of recognition. It's on all non-TW ROMs and causes the phone to totally wig out and the screen blinks on and off, sometimes locking the phone, sometimes not. It never used to do it before, and I suspect . It works great for every other aspect of the ROMS other than the dialer/phone app. It's not so simple at all that I can use one of those fine ROMS and just uninstall the CM dialer and install the TW version, is it?

I don't think that would work. You'd need aosp dialer on AOSP and TW dialer on TW. There's other apks and libraries involved. But you can always cherry pick apks from other 'like' roms that you know work fine. I just play around till something sticks, I break more than I fix but that's why we make backups.

To fix the dialer app not sending or receiving calls and getting stuck after call hang up.
You gotta use the method at the below link to fix this issue. I like AOSP over touchwhiz roms so i am so glad this xda member came up with this solution for us.

WORKING BLN - Back Light Notification

Well, neldar and morfic of xda have done it, there is now a working back light notification for the Nexus s! morfic has included it in his latest kernels, Honity12 and Honity14. but, you do need the BLN control market app to make it work. there is a free version and a pro version in the market, i recommend the pro version. it has much more options, including controlling the speed of the blink. heres a video demo of BLN on my nexus s--> http://goo.gl/tUcD6
also, heres morfics Honity thread, download links for the kernels are in the op--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973125
Fantastic!
I have been waiting for this
Working perfectly for me! Great work.

weeee finally thanks for letting us know
Cool it works. So pretty much we have to buy the pro version if we want it to be useful at all? Right now when I get a notification it turns on the button LEDs for like 2 seconds then turns off, and that's it, doesn't keep pulsing...
wait for this since i bought this phone now its perfect!!
waiting for a BLN kernel which work with the NSCollab ROM

yea, you do need the pro app to get the full features. on the free app, itll blink again(like every minute or so), just not right away.
thanks for the heads up! I guess it's time to change kernels for the first time for my nexus s. Didn't see the need to in the past, as I don't really need more speed.
backing up CM7_RC2 right now, and getting ready to flash the kernel and buy the BLN app
edit: sorry to go off topic, but does anyone know of anyway I can make notification sounds repeat like they did on NoLED?
can you control what icon will be shown
WOW sounds great
Question
Can i control it to the level that -
SMS will light the HOME botton
Mail will light the SEARCH botton
MISSED CALL will light both BACK & HOME bottons
??
Well, I'm using this kernel and it seems to be causing issues where the capacitive buttons are unresponsive on screen unlock. I think morfic is trying to fix this. I seem to have stumbled across a work around that I can't post on the developer thread(being "new" and all). Don't know whether anyone else has mentioned it.
If I leave the BLN test notification in my notification bar alone. Then the issue doesn't crop up any more and my buttons and BLN feature work fine.
Sorry, scratch that. That was a bit premature. The issue is back when I leave a notification unattended and lock my screen. My bad.

sadly not for all nexus s user
I've found a bug with the kernel where if on keylock you touch the shortcut buttons. Once you do that they light up and it doesn't fade away, only happens when I take it out my pocket. Also sometimes the buttons when unlock done illuminate and aren't clickable resulting in a restart.
Has anyone else seen this? If not it might be down to my set up.
Same problems here. You might want to try morfics s10 BLN v3 test kernel.

BLN is very buggy. when charging the phone and getting a notification it will cause the phone to freeze or reboot. Also when getting a notification and unlocking the phone the cap buttons will not always light. Locking and unlocking the phone will fix this problem but not always.
Even after uninstalling BLN, the cap button weirdeness persists. Only way to fix it is to restore from a backup or install a new ROM. I'm using CM7 11 w/ honity12 at stock speeds.
When BLN works its awesome. Hopefully they can fix these problems before I install it again.

Actually, what you need to do is use another kernel (which coincidentally happens when you restore a backup or install another ROM).
So does the backlight notification work if I just purchase the pro app from the market or do I need to install the kernel? I plan to install Og's kernel with voodoo features so I was wondering.. can multiple kernel be installed? No right?

You can only have one kernel at a time.
It's a pity it only works with some ROMs, I like to cook my own ones making them as tiny as possible, removing unused apps and changing ringtones and notification sound for my own ones
As long as you're basing your cooked ROM on a ROM that has a BLN-enabled kernel, you can use that kernel.
For example, if your ROM is basically a CM7 with some modifications, you can use any CM7-compatible kernel and it should work.

Problem is the ROM I like to use is a very stock one with some modifications done with dsixda's kitchen.
I'll start reading about kernels and how to change them, maybe I can combine my ROM with that kernel

[Q] Lg Stock Dialer on CM7?

Hi, This is my first Post and i want to know if there is a flashable version of the Dialer found in the Stock Rom, that could be used in a CM7 Rom.
I always turn back to a 2.2 based Rom because the dialer doesn't have T9 speed dialing (and honestly the t9 in the lg dialer is the best (accents, number-names search, start, middle search etc..) and since 2.3.x third party dialers cant uncheck the "missing calls notifications" it is kind of troublesome.
If there isnt a flashable zip, is there a way I could "extract" from another ROM to a CM7 one??
Thanks in advance!

Go Contacts is nice but something tells me not to share Contact/message information with an app designed by the Chinese. But going by design, it is one of the best.
Besides about dialer. Somebody knows as to solve a problem of decline slider?
Then just as an academic exercice (or just because I want to), it is posible at least??
+1 to this request! Stock dialer is MUCH best than all that crap you recommend, isn't any way to go back to it on a 2.3 rom?
I always go back to 2.2 based roms because the fast scroll with letters on the contacts tab
I had some time to do a little research and I've found somehting about replacing Phone.apk from System/app with the Phone.apk of any ROM based on LG froyo.
But, there was a problem about the framework, because I think CM7 uses one different from LG, does anyone knows?
Hopefully someone will give an answer!

Quick Keys on a custom ROM (MIUI.US)

Hello boys, girls, and friendly animals.
I installed MIUI.US yesterday and noticed the same thing that's always bothered me from non-stock or non-CM ROMs: there's no way to use the phone's Quick Keys (other than setting them to work like, say, a Back button using ButtonRemapper).
One of the things I use the most from the stock ROM is the shortcut to send an SMS to a contact. I've found that without this, ROMs eventually annoy me.
Is there any way to go about and making these work? I tried installing UserKeysTool.apk (com.tmobile.userkeystool) from a stock ROM (s14mc's 1.6 Slim) to no avail; the app simply crashes upon opening it, which means I'm missing some other file I'm not aware of.
Any help would be appreciated here.

Is there a good alternative for Contacts / Dialer ?

I currently own a ATT S4, it's rooted with Wanam Xposed Framework, Nova launcher, Stock Nexus messaging app, etc... And I must admit I really like this phone a lot, after having an Nexus 4, and Galaxy Nexus before that. The battery life on this S4 is freaking amazing, easily 50% better than my Nexus 4. I get 5h -5.5h On Screen time every day, and I really like the 1080p screen, very beautiful. And this phone is plenty fast for me, no lag with Nova set to "Faster than Light"
TouchWiz is pretty much hidden away with all the other .apk's I have installed. But the one thing I HATE on TW is specifically the Dialer and Contacts. Swiping to make a phone call is ****ing stupid, and not being able to swipe from the contacts to the phone dialer is another mistake.
And pressing the Phone app, or the Contacts app, are the only two apps, that have a slight pause or delay, not really lag, just a pause till it opens up. No other app does that, everything else opens up in a blink of an eye.
But other than that, I do like TW, and the other cool features it has, and I use. But would love to find a stock Nexus Dialer and Contact .apk, but not sure those would ever work on a TW phone ? And I can't flash any zips, due to being on MF3 firmware I can only do .apk's with Root Explorer. Is there something similar to the stock Nexus dialer/contacts on the Play Store ? And something that is not laggy or worse than even the stock TW ? Some of the Play Store might look like a stock Nexus app, but are actually slower, and worse.
I found this app on the Play Store, and it seems very much like a stock nexus dialer, pretty quick, and light
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dexetra.dialer&hl=en
Checked my Greenify settings, this 'dialapp' is running big time in the background, with lots of wake times. Looks I need to delete it now. Dang, can't I just install the stock Nexus dialer from an older 4.2.2 build, and delete the Samsung TW dialer ?

Try exdialer and contacts that's what I use and love it. You can change the interface to make it look like how you want. Try it out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.modoohut.dialer

I tried both apps, Dialerapp and ExDialer, and they were good, but still have TouchWiz running behind them, when pressing to hang up, it shows the TW interface there, or some other areas still show TW. I thought these apps would erase and get rid of TW 100%, guess not.
I suppose I could try to delete all Samsung Phone / Dialer .apk in /system with Root Explorer ? Would love to be able to push a 4.2.2 based CM10.1 phone.apk, but I think that might screw things up ?

Find a guide to try flashing the zip. I think either you would have to change the script of your device and edit it or flash the zip via safestrap. I usually look into the international theme forum they have a bunch of great ports that work for our phone also.

[Q] is there a way to disable knock on feature in KitKat ROMs?

I keep looking for a way to disable the knock on feature with KitKat based ROMs, but haven't found a way yet. I'm running SlimKat on a LS980 right now, but none of the other ROMs have had the option to disable the knock on feature.
It is great to have until I try running with the phone or using it to do manual work while listening to music. It keeps changing songs, opening websites from Google now, rearranging my home screen apps, and sometimes managing to call people.
Does any one know a easy way (or stable ROM) to have the ability to deactivate knock on? I'd love to be able to turn it on and off easily like WiFi or Bluetooth so when I need the feature I can have it, but when I don't it isn't a pain.

you should specify you want a solution for aosp based kitkat because on stock(the lg themed one that came with the phone) you can go to settings>gestures and turn it off/if the proximity sensor is covered it doesn't allow knock on to work to prevent it from unlocking while in pockets and stuff
BUMP!
I'd like to know as well! The screen keeps coming on while in my pocket. What file/code/apk/ect is responsible for Knock-On?
I'm running AOSP C-ROM 7.1.

It is mainly kernel which is in charge of knock on so unless you know how to create kernel there isn't much you can do
