I currently own a ATT S4, it's rooted with Wanam Xposed Framework, Nova launcher, Stock Nexus messaging app, etc... And I must admit I really like this phone a lot, after having an Nexus 4, and Galaxy Nexus before that. The battery life on this S4 is freaking amazing, easily 50% better than my Nexus 4. I get 5h -5.5h On Screen time every day, and I really like the 1080p screen, very beautiful. And this phone is plenty fast for me, no lag with Nova set to "Faster than Light"
TouchWiz is pretty much hidden away with all the other .apk's I have installed. But the one thing I HATE on TW is specifically the Dialer and Contacts. Swiping to make a phone call is ****ing stupid, and not being able to swipe from the contacts to the phone dialer is another mistake.
And pressing the Phone app, or the Contacts app, are the only two apps, that have a slight pause or delay, not really lag, just a pause till it opens up. No other app does that, everything else opens up in a blink of an eye.
But other than that, I do like TW, and the other cool features it has, and I use. But would love to find a stock Nexus Dialer and Contact .apk, but not sure those would ever work on a TW phone ? And I can't flash any zips, due to being on MF3 firmware I can only do .apk's with Root Explorer. Is there something similar to the stock Nexus dialer/contacts on the Play Store ? And something that is not laggy or worse than even the stock TW ? Some of the Play Store might look like a stock Nexus app, but are actually slower, and worse.
I found this app on the Play Store, and it seems very much like a stock nexus dialer, pretty quick, and light

Checked my Greenify settings, this 'dialapp' is running big time in the background, with lots of wake times. Looks I need to delete it now. Dang, can't I just install the stock Nexus dialer from an older 4.2.2 build, and delete the Samsung TW dialer ?

Try exdialer and contacts that's what I use and love it. You can change the interface to make it look like how you want. Try it out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.modoohut.dialer

I tried both apps, Dialerapp and ExDialer, and they were good, but still have TouchWiz running behind them, when pressing to hang up, it shows the TW interface there, or some other areas still show TW. I thought these apps would erase and get rid of TW 100%, guess not.
I suppose I could try to delete all Samsung Phone / Dialer .apk in /system with Root Explorer ? Would love to be able to push a 4.2.2 based CM10.1 phone.apk, but I think that might screw things up ?

Find a guide to try flashing the zip. I think either you would have to change the script of your device and edit it or flash the zip via safestrap. I usually look into the international theme forum they have a bunch of great ports that work for our phone also.

download the latest cyanogen nightly and gapps. then pull the files you need. All the stock non-sprint andoid goodness is already ported over to the evo. I am playing with the sprint froyo with 90% of sense uninstalled and running most of the vanila from the cyanogen.
I nandroid between both.
Here is launcher2 from 2.2.
Thanks for the replies, the launcher 2 still doesnt launch the dialer, says application not installed, and i pulled the gallery APK from CM and its terribly slow and laggy. Says loading new albums every time and doesnt load anything, am i doing it wrong? Do i need to pull more than the APK?

That's because you didn't install the dialer... For the gallery it takes a long time on the first startup to start working well because it is making thumbnails for ever picture it can find on your SD card.
Is it possible to make it recognize the HTC dialer, and not the stock android? I am not rooted, so i cant mess with system apps
took about 2 hours to load all my photos with the gallery open the hole time. Its still really choppy, but better than it was before. I installed gallery3d from the cyanogen nightly. Only problem now is my camera and camcorder apps do not work anymore. If i uninstall the gallery they work fine. Is there a way to fix that without uninstalling the gallery?

No, at least not if you know how to code a fix yourself.

You could try a different version of the gallery from a different / more stable ROM, but other than that IDK.
Camera and camcorder apps work again, found out alot of people on 2.2 are getting it.

You're probably better off running adw.launcher. It looks like Froyo's launcher with way more customization. I highly recommend it.

not to be "that guy", but if this was in the correct section (themes and apps) you might have seen someone post the real froyo gallery app. No lag. No issues with it interfering with other apps like phone, and has the pinch preview.
Than can the moderators move it than please? The Gallery Now works pretty well, but still a little choppy. Im sure a better port could be made. And i like the 3d affect in the stock launcher, the adw launcher is ok

I also tried a lot of Dialers some time ago, while I was still on S2. I settled for RocketDial. This app does everything and is incredibly fast. Costs money, but it's worth it in my opinion.
dialer + , has kinda stock android look
Yes, whatever third party dialer you install, the TW will stay there, as it's in the core of the TW framework. I don't think there's a way to completely uninstall it, rather you shouldn't.
I was wondering if someone that knows how could modify GEL so it has tabs on the app drawer.
I love this new stock launcher and it is really good if you stick with the stock apps but as soon as you start getting new apps on your device it becomes a huge mess quite fast. I hate the way the app drawer is so deorganized... if only I could organize it in someway with folders, tabs o even just order them myself would be great!
If anyone is able to modify it and make the app drawer a bit better would be awesome

That's only for the home screen and is not at all what he is asking for.

I would loved to see this also I read some where tho because they are closed DPI that modding the stock Gel launcher won't be possible but I really don't know about that sort of thing I know nova plans to integrate some of the voice option and some of the other things but who knows will see. I was nova all the way till GEL
It's possible to modify it just like any other launcher but Google actively goes after anyone who modifies their closed source stuff so even if someone did post it the forum would take it down in short order. The launcher does this for a reason. If you search through to the app google gets that information, if you simply navigate to it they don't. Same reason you cant take down the permanent home screen search widget, they try and cram SMS via hangouts, and all the other bone headed things they did to try and force you into giving up more information. Say no to uncle Goog and get one of the many third party offerings. Seriously. You'll have a better launcher and maybe Goog will take the hint and rein in the increasingly aggressive tactics they have been using to harvest data.
Hey guys!
Does anybody have any idea why only the TW/Stock dialer works on my phone despite trying multiple AOSP/CM ROMs, kernels, PRL/Firmwares, and recoveries? I'm having tons of trouble finding others with this problem. The CM-style dialers all glitch and will not allow the input of keys from the phone/dialer app and will on some roms black the screen out completely despite my using the home button to minimize the app. In a few ROMs I've had to hard reboot the phone to get it out of the call screen. In others, only the dialer/phone app itself freezes up and the screen glitches with mild to moderate system ui problems.
Anybody? Or maybe I could provide some more info to anyone who has questions that we might figure out what the dilly is, here?
Dirty flashing? I don't know why you're having this issue but I have had issues in some roms where the aosp dialer come up blank with no digits.
What I did was search for blacked out dialer apks. Grabbed one for aosp and one for TW. Each time I go to a new rom I just overwrite the dialer apk, change permission reboot and good to go. Maybe that could be of some help maybe not. Just an idea and good luck

Thanks. Yeah, it's hard to explain exactly what happens, but it's not involving the omission of digits or lack of recognition. It's on all non-TW ROMs and causes the phone to totally wig out and the screen blinks on and off, sometimes locking the phone, sometimes not. It never used to do it before, and I suspect . It works great for every other aspect of the ROMS other than the dialer/phone app. It's not so simple at all that I can use one of those fine ROMS and just uninstall the CM dialer and install the TW version, is it?

I don't think that would work. You'd need aosp dialer on AOSP and TW dialer on TW. There's other apks and libraries involved. But you can always cherry pick apks from other 'like' roms that you know work fine. I just play around till something sticks, I break more than I fix but that's why we make backups.

To fix the dialer app not sending or receiving calls and getting stuck after call hang up.
You gotta use the method at the below link to fix this issue. I like AOSP over touchwhiz roms so i am so glad this xda member came up with this solution for us.

Hello just wondering if it is possible to replace the phone and contacts with something from stock...
I feel ya, I can't stand the dialer and contacts on TW. Only way at the moment is to install CM12, builds for the different variants can be found here on xda

Why not try "Rocketdial" at the play store.
It's excellent and it's a 3 in 1 app.
It has contacts, dialer and optional full screen caller id all in one app.
It has a whole lot of options too. ( fully compatible on all android phones.
Check it out here:

Have a happy new year!
i am using ExDialer since almost a year now... i find TW dialer app boring...
I find that all these dialer apps simply overlay on top and route to the the TW dialer anyway. I tried a few of them.
I have used rocket dial, exdialer, angel dialer, and some other 2 or three, very disappointed, horrible lags, in some cases, first appears the stock dialer, then the replacement, yes, I think, they are redrawn over the stock one, so, its worst to use them for me
Try touchpal contacts or contacts+. Anyway for me iprefer the default dialer. It has a lot of functions
