Well, neldar and morfic of xda have done it, there is now a working back light notification for the Nexus s! morfic has included it in his latest kernels, Honity12 and Honity14. but, you do need the BLN control market app to make it work. there is a free version and a pro version in the market, i recommend the pro version. it has much more options, including controlling the speed of the blink. heres a video demo of BLN on my nexus s--> http://goo.gl/tUcD6
also, heres morfics Honity thread, download links for the kernels are in the op--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973125
Fantastic!
I have been waiting for this
Working perfectly for me! Great work.

weeee finally thanks for letting us know
Cool it works. So pretty much we have to buy the pro version if we want it to be useful at all? Right now when I get a notification it turns on the button LEDs for like 2 seconds then turns off, and that's it, doesn't keep pulsing...
wait for this since i bought this phone now its perfect!!
waiting for a BLN kernel which work with the NSCollab ROM

yea, you do need the pro app to get the full features. on the free app, itll blink again(like every minute or so), just not right away.
thanks for the heads up! I guess it's time to change kernels for the first time for my nexus s. Didn't see the need to in the past, as I don't really need more speed.
backing up CM7_RC2 right now, and getting ready to flash the kernel and buy the BLN app
edit: sorry to go off topic, but does anyone know of anyway I can make notification sounds repeat like they did on NoLED?
can you control what icon will be shown
WOW sounds great
Question
Can i control it to the level that -
SMS will light the HOME botton
Mail will light the SEARCH botton
MISSED CALL will light both BACK & HOME bottons
??
Well, I'm using this kernel and it seems to be causing issues where the capacitive buttons are unresponsive on screen unlock. I think morfic is trying to fix this. I seem to have stumbled across a work around that I can't post on the developer thread(being "new" and all). Don't know whether anyone else has mentioned it.
If I leave the BLN test notification in my notification bar alone. Then the issue doesn't crop up any more and my buttons and BLN feature work fine.
Sorry, scratch that. That was a bit premature. The issue is back when I leave a notification unattended and lock my screen. My bad.

sadly not for all nexus s user
I've found a bug with the kernel where if on keylock you touch the shortcut buttons. Once you do that they light up and it doesn't fade away, only happens when I take it out my pocket. Also sometimes the buttons when unlock done illuminate and aren't clickable resulting in a restart.
Has anyone else seen this? If not it might be down to my set up.
Same problems here. You might want to try morfics s10 BLN v3 test kernel.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
BLN is very buggy. when charging the phone and getting a notification it will cause the phone to freeze or reboot. Also when getting a notification and unlocking the phone the cap buttons will not always light. Locking and unlocking the phone will fix this problem but not always.
Even after uninstalling BLN, the cap button weirdeness persists. Only way to fix it is to restore from a backup or install a new ROM. I'm using CM7 11 w/ honity12 at stock speeds.
When BLN works its awesome. Hopefully they can fix these problems before I install it again.

Actually, what you need to do is use another kernel (which coincidentally happens when you restore a backup or install another ROM).
So does the backlight notification work if I just purchase the pro app from the market or do I need to install the kernel? I plan to install Og's kernel with voodoo features so I was wondering.. can multiple kernel be installed? No right?

You can only have one kernel at a time.
It's a pity it only works with some ROMs, I like to cook my own ones making them as tiny as possible, removing unused apps and changing ringtones and notification sound for my own ones
As long as you're basing your cooked ROM on a ROM that has a BLN-enabled kernel, you can use that kernel.
For example, if your ROM is basically a CM7 with some modifications, you can use any CM7-compatible kernel and it should work.

Problem is the ROM I like to use is a very stock one with some modifications done with dsixda's kitchen.
I'll start reading about kernels and how to change them, maybe I can combine my ROM with that kernel

I can't find a app like that in the market. Otherwise i would'nt ask for it. But thanks anyway
doesn't the stock rom have a torch app that's pretty much the same? but anyways if you're rooted, there are quite a few torch apps that use the phone's led.
Yes, the stock rom does have an Torch application, but with the CyanogenMod's Torch's application the flash light is almost 4 time's brighter.
try tesla LED.
You will see the difference
Thanks!!! This is a really great alternative
What I'd like to see a dev do is take the android source and one of the kernels (ScaryKernel stable preferably) and develop a ROM from the ground up.
Call waiting does not work properly in CM7 or another AOSP based ROM I tried.
GPS has problems fixing in that ROM as well. I believe Sense based ROM users don't have this problem.
What would be really cool is having a nice 2.3.5 ROM with ScaryStable kernel, Android 2.3.5, some, not all of the tweaks from CM7, apps included that are actually useful such as antutu benchmark, kernel manager, rom manager, super user, terminal emulator, speedtest.net, wifi analyzer, gps status, fasterfix stuff like that, HTC GPS drivers, and being able to update profile, and prl and being able to get to the ##code# menus from the dialer (basically need the HTC dialer for this I'm guessing which would also fix call waiting). That would be like the ultimate ROM in my opinion.
Thoughts? And yes, I'm actually thinking about taking this on as my own project if I have to even though I can't program to save my life.
What's a matter with call waiting on ASOP? I've never noticed anything messed up or anything different.....I have predominatly have had cm7 but also ran shiftdeck for awhile and call waiting has worked fine I believe....
I have read others having problems getting gps to get a fix but have never experienced the problem myself.....I know the solution has been to flash sense get a lock n then flash asop and from what I read gps is fixed after that....

Tap manage calls in CM7, tell me what happens.
As for GPS, I found a combination of resetting the GPS and downloading GPS assistance data with GPS status, and using faster fix and setting the proper ntp server while having wireless assistance on helps for a while. I'm still investigating exactly what needs to be done for GPS to to work properly.
I can honestly say I have never had a single problem with GPS on any cyanogen build but i never shut my GPS off I don't even know why It's on maybe for the weather so maybe that info could help someone maybe get a lock right before flashing and leaving GPS on might work but AOSP is fast has no bloat and is very customizable but I am a Sense guy so:
I think a Rom I would be 100% happy with as an all time Rom for right now it would have to be a Sense 3.0 Rom because I absolutely love it, with the HDR and panorama effects added to the camera, overclocked to 1.2 Ghz with a very light theme maybe like Rosie, status bar with no clock and notification area to be semi-trans black with white font a themed HTC_IME and dialer and a custom Glock LockRing that's all

The real question is how does your GPS work with wireless assistance turned off?
And Sense 3.0 is beautiful (mainly talking about the weather themed lock screen with the shortcuts) but I hate the way Sense 2 and 3 manage contacts and it's way too facebook integrated in general which is annoying.

I have to disagree. I love sense bc it has Facebook integration. I like how I set my contacts to their respective profile on my touch pro 2 with wm 6.5 synced with Google and never had to worry about it again. It puts a pic to your contacts and gives u a bday entry which is nice imo.
Now my gps sucks, I have to wait 5-10 mins to get a lock outside or in the car. And sense 2.3 doesn't have kernel source so its limited to the stock kernel.
My dream Rom is MikG, with x99 kernel. I used to love that kernel on 2.2

My dream Rom would be MikG With x99 or V8 kernel, AND Firerats due to that sucker helps save a lot of space.
My "dream" ROM on the Shift would have to be full blown Sense 3.0 with it running perfectly smooth WITHOUT overclocking. I would want the kernel for sbc and UV. And I would want google + integration added along with FB and twitter.
(Guess thats why its called a dream ROM )

To start out, it would look a LOT like CM7. Same launcher, same extras. NO Sense UI.
(for the record, I know that most of this is available, it just means installing a number of extra packages)
Add in all the google
T9 predictive input for the dialer
A nicer looking messaging app that doesn't fail every time you try to send a text longer than 1 message.
A few of the nice sound options from Sense UI, including having the ringer volume automatically reduce when the phone is picked up, automatically switching to speakerphone when you set the phone face-down during a call, and double-tapping the home key to see all your launcher pages at once.

1. Gmail, Voice, Talk, Maps, Latitude (yes, I know it's bad for battery AND privacy, but it's fun and I don't plan on committing crimes, cheating on my wife, lieing to my boss or ever being worth enough money to kidnap; so I don't care if people know where I am.), Navigation, and of course, Market.
2. I haven't made any changes to the built in messaging app of any kind, but I'm also running the latest nightly. Doesn't matter too much, since I've installed GoSMSpro.
3. Yes, I'm well aware that many of those features kill the battery. That's why I like CM7, and only want a small handful of the highly useful features from Sense.

For now - this problems really deep inside. Video system in android 4 changed mostlly.
Wow, I knew that you wouldn't abandon us.
Edit: Just loaded it up. Really fast. Obviously, a lot of problems but nevertheless, really good start.
No market?
No wifi?
And an error kept popping up, in part english, part Korean, at every new screen, stating it will eliminate something.
So glad to have you back

It's awesome & sweet, man!
I was tried with CM9 but no luck and have not much time to play around with it. Now you are back with it, that great!
Thumb up & keep great working.
I will try it soon
Tried, and this is my experiences:
Good things:
- Speed is incredible fast with many apps I installed on last CM7.X
- Wifi, 3G works
- Home button not work (cannot go home by pressing Home button) EDITED: Home button is go with different behavior compared with GingerBread, so press & hold it to see list of recent & running app, this way it work for me
and many things work as expected.
and Bad things:
- Screen rotation is not work well: look it start to work but mostly forced in landscape mode (in launcher, app) some time it go portrait for dialing screen, error message ... I was unchecked auto rotation options but not help.
- Call not work for me, it go end nearly immediate after I press call.
- SMS not work, EDITED: work after reboot, may it has blocked by some overload operations.
- Net monitor through some exceptions due: /proc/net/xt_qtaguid/stats not exist, we need kernel module for this stuff.
- Cam not work (of course )
I don't see where to customize Cyanogen such as fast switch widget on notification bar, look like we are missing Cyanogen Settings
I have problem with IO schedule in CM7 and was remove dalvik-cache from list of app2ext startup script and it solved 50% of mine. I used `lsof` to see what's going to use /sdcard & /sd-ext and see that almost operations come from background apps like launcher, theme. I think we should avoid to use bind mount to SD's ext partition to get better speed. Also use `vmstat` command will see sometime 1-3 applications block IO process and it will cause IO wait almost full (about > 90).
Anyone face problem like me? and what's solution you guys was used to solve it?
Will try to tweak it and fix some buggy if possible, keep the good work guys!
I see some have offered to help with cm9 but I'm dispointed in these forms .
The first thing thats needs to be fixed are sensors.
The camera will be the hardest to fix.
I believe the defry has the same sensors as our xt can someone do a port for are xt.
The worked good for me but their seems to be battery drain.
I would like to see some team work on this cm9.

ICS changed the camera API significantly. I don't think anyone's figured out how to use the older libraries yet. Non-functioning camera is pretty common at the moment.
We really to find a fix for the sensors first then fix other things.

For camera, AFAIK we need to write a new kernel module for it as ICS is using HAL then we must have:
- /system/lib/modules/camera.ko
- /system/lib/hw/camera.sholes.so
EDITED: I've just tried with hw/camera.goldfish.so & camera.ko from MS2 then Camera app just loaded with colored box pinging, at least it not show "Cannot connect to Camera" message

I'm currently testing Xprivacy (0.34) (Xposed 2.1.4) on stable stock ROM together with @faux123's kernel 002. Even when Xprivavy is enabled, but no changes made, yet, the phone becomes unusable - takes minutes to pull down the notification bar or launch (some) apps, getting timeouts on other apps, etc. That's with default kernel settings, didn't play with fauxclock.
All goes back to normal when disabling/removing Xposed/Xprivacy. Anyone had that problem? Is there a fix? Deciding between custom ROM (PAC) + openpdroid + (in comparison) bad kernel OR stock ROM + no workin privacy + good kernel is really hard for me
I have been testing xprivacy also on deodexed beta 531. I have been using beta4 of faux123 custom kernel without much trouble.
I will try to test with kernel m2 when i have some spare time....
Do you have any log files that can give you a clue?
Today i switched back to PAC nightly with openpdroid to compare, will switch back to stock in a couple of days.

No logs for now, no, needed to disable the stuff to actually be able to use the phone. Maybe I'll have some time tomorrow to investigate, but can't promise anything for now.
On a sidenote, I find Xprivacy cumbersome to use, having a tick signaling something is disabled is really bad design, imho. Plus I'm missing a popup after installing a new app, which takes me right to configuring it.
