Hello mates!
I just got a brand new SGS5 and I noticed strange marks on the display. The display is absolutelly unmarked, no scratches or anything like that. When I polish the display, no marks are able to see, but when I use my fingers and the fingerprints are on them, they go visible. I tried to use some alcohol or things like that to get rid of them, but nothing helped.
Here some photos of it (attached) - firstly the polished display, then the strange marks after usage.
Anyone has any experience about similar problem? Any ideas how to get rid of them? Warranty please as a last option, I'm leaving to holiday in next weeks and I would like to take my S5 with me.
Thank you for any response, the solver gets a candy!

Well, even though I am not in it for the candy , I am still trying to help you out here. It seems that it is some adhesive residue of some sorts, I would advise you use rubbing alcohol (though be careful with it and use it only within the confines of the screen!) on those spots.

As I wrote higher, alcohol didn't help. No candy for you, even if you wanted it! But thank you anyway. I'm looking for someone who had this problem and managed it to get rid of those marks.

Ahhhh, sorry, didn't read it properly it seems, my bad, am a bit tired, but if I knew that I shouldn't have responded I guess
Really weird problem, though it also has an interesting possible use, if we know what caused this, it could be implemented to prevent fingerprints from happening at all as those spots seem to be fingerprint resistant.

Haha, so I'm going to keep this phone and sell it for research. :victory: But for now I woul'd be ok with phone without this special layer...
Have the same spots, but at the top of the screen near the speaker. But it looks for like the spots are the places without resistance layer. How do you think can warranty help in this case ?
Solved
Hello!
Yes - whole problem solved by warranty. No problem with it. They replaced the whole display and there are no problems anymore. :victory:
Unfortunatelly I didn't find anything that could help without replacing the display. But - as I said - there was absolutly no problem about warranty and changing it.
Hope this thread helps

Finally!
Finally someone with the same problem! I've searched for ages for somebody with the same problems that i have with my sgs5 screen. I've actually gotten my phone replaced 2 times for the same reason but after between one and four days the same kind of blotches or scratches return, as described above. The last time I handed in my phone Samsung (pretty reasonable though annoying) decided that it had to be caused by my own usage, hence no help from them.
The problem is that I have been extra bloody careful with the phone since I've had the same problems several times, but now Samsung won't help me because it's such an unusual problem, and I have no idea of whats causing it. Does anybody have a clue on whats causing these things to appear on the screen? Would it be possible to reapply a new layer of oloeophobic coating?
Huh, that's wild. That seems like something that would happen if someone were to repair the front-glass improperly. Lack of Loca glue between the glass and display.

You think? I got a brand new phone the first two times (!) since it was during the 5 days DOA time. So in that case it's from production not repair. The screen has later been replaced but the problem appears AGAIN... Samsung won't even answer me anymore since they claim it's my own doing. Really annoying...
same thing
Hi guys. I have the same thing. Brand new phone. Was using for 4 days. When I clean the spot there are no sratches but once i touch with fingers i see strange pattern. Tried cleaning with non alchohol screen cleaner but no luck. Was extremely careful not keeping with metals in my pocket. I think it would be nightmare to send it to warranty to prove that smth is wrong.. Starting to hate Samsung. Waiting for glass screen protector so i think once i put it the problem dissapear. Still wery annoyed..

You might ask for a replacement which i think they'll give you and then directly put a screen protector on. Annoying I know but as I've said before it's gonna happen again with ur newly replaced screen (or else i'm very bloody unlucky...). I wonder if it would be possible to just remove all the oleophobic coating of the screen in some way. I'm pretty sure that's the cause of the problem.
I am having the same issue with my phone. I don't want to replace the screen, because I don't like doing that.
Did anyone managed to get them away?
Same thing here. I am not even sure if the issue is caused by the oleophobic coating on the top.
Looks like a mass problem and replacing the screen or the phone will not help.
Anybody tried screen protector to fix the issue?

Happened some time last night I guess, it looks like humidity between the touch screen layer and the screen. It does not affect operation of the stylus, but does leave some ghosting effect when the drawing contrast is high - like when drawing the cursor on ScummVM. Highly annoying, the PDA is still under warranty (have it for 5 months) so I hope it will be a good enough reason for replacement. I have a screen protector always on, and an aluminium case so I hardly believe this could be my fault at any level. Any opinions?
hmm
still there after removing the screen protector?

haha, yeah. I thought about that too. It's, unfortunately, still there. The photo is with the screen protector removed.
How about trying a hairdryer on it low setting mind you it works on condensation on watches should be no different.
Tried it. Doesn't seem to affect at all the shape or anything. Didn't insisty too much so that I don't melt anything Also, when shape doesn't seem to be affected by the push of the stylus, so maybe my original estimate of it being humidity is not correct after all.
Looking at it again it looks like a pressure mark like if you push the screen to hard not sure what you can do about that but good luck with it.
Well, you might be right. I hope it is covered by warranty, it's been only a few months since I bought it How much would a new screen cost me anyway?
Think I saw one on ebay today £79 I think but dont quote me.ebay id 9707065454
I had that on my screen when I would keep the wizard in my pocket, pushing the screen. It would go away after a few hours. It doesn't seem to do it anymore though... the screen must have aged or something.
Thanks
JK
I am pretty sure I didn't bend the phone in any way. It is always in an aluminium case that doesn't bend And it hasn't gone away yet, it's been many days now I think I am screwed. Do you guys think that the warranty will cover that?
Edit:
I definetely think it's some kind of liquid, most likely water from humidity It's pretty humid here in Edinburgh at nights. The shape seems to alter if I press near the shadow, and after some presses, the shape has changed a little bit. I might try the hair-dryer thing someone proposed a little more, crossing my fingers that I don't melt anything. I will let you guys know how it went.
Hi Folks,
I'm reading this forum since about 1,5 weeks, as I got my first smartphone then. Unfortunaly I sent it back today, as it got broken yesterday. It has the problem, that the touchscreen doesn't untouch. I made a picture:
I can get rid of this touched area by pressing on it with my fingernail and move it to the bottom.
I think it's from that lether case. Anybody else ever had a problem like that? Probably with another phone type?
Looks like condensation under the screen to me.
Reapply screen protector... That's it..
I thought about water also, but under the microscope we have seen that it wasn't water. I was able to remove it restless until I touched it next.
I removed the screenprotector, but that wasn't a solution.
Unfortonaly I had to send it back today, as I'll get a brandnew one within the first 14 Days after delivery
Wow that's new. Mebe condensation.
Maybe since the touch part is 2 layers, Glass and Plastic screen hovering on top of that, that it got too hot somehow and that the plastic part got stuck to the glass. mebe if you had let it cool or something it woulda unstuck.
Was the phone near any heat or in direct sunlight?\
This looks like a cracked digitizer, a touch sensitive layer above the screen itself. The screen underneath usually seems to be fine, but it doesn't have the touch capabilities anymore. It has a look of spilled liquid and you should be able to see dots of the touch grid, you can't see them normally. It happened to me on my Orbit2. I think whole screen has to be changed...

I thought about something like that too. Has the digitizer a "spazial" filling, so that you have a "soft feeling" when you tab it with the penzil?

I had the phone in my trouser pocket every day. No sunlight or heat. I tried cooling down...no chance. I had a Cassiopeia once and had a waterdamage to it. There I was able to get the water out of the touchpad by having it on my heating for a few days. But it looked not like this here.

Just had the same problem with my Td2. Not impressed. The phone was fine one minute as listening to my music on it, popped it in my pocket went upstairs ang got this blob right in the centre of the screen.
Glad I took the insurance now as this is going to have to get sent back. Not overly impressed as only had the phone for 6 weeks and having a problem with the build.
Just a quick question for those that had this problem. Was the damaged screen visible under all types of light?
I ask this because taking into different rooms in my house and different types of light it seems to disappear, then reappears under other light sources. I will test in the daytime tomorrow but am now starting to wonder exactly how long it has been there...

My "blob" couldn't be seen when I looked straight from above. As on my pictrue I had to look from a angle to see it. Also it was hard to see under bright daylight. Hope that helps.
But I have a question also: You all used the leather bag shipped with the phone? I think the case isn't plain enought inside. I think there is a higher pressure one the display while wearing it in my trouser pocket. Anybody else who can tell more about that?
I've the same problem, at least I think it is the same. Touch still works fine, but it seems like there is some condensation underneath the screen.
I can confirm that it has nothing to do with the screenprotector.
If I put my finger on it, it moves to the sides. Sometimes it seems to be gone, but after a while I notice it again.
It's a very colourful stain. Can I claim warranty for this kind of 'errors'?

As you are the 4th in this thread I think so
It's not under warranty of HTC, at least that's what they told me...
Did somebody else contacted HTC about this problem?

too bad it seems like they classify it under 'cracked display' - and according to the user manual it is not covered by warranty.
Probably, but I think it's just an error of HTC. The way they treat their loyal customers is, in my opinion, verry disappointing. It was the same with the problems everyone had with the TytnII.
Today I got my phone back from my provider...the same broken one. In the letter they told my I sent it back too later
Now I'm dissapointed from o2 Germany, cause the customer support told me what to do and I did it.
guys i had the same problem (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519441) and i got a replacement. but i tell you.. this is caused because one time the phone got hit by pressure on the screen and the screen itself kinda felt into the phonecase. check out from the side.. you probably will see that the screen is lowered - then when you use fingers on the touchscreen this blob appears. in my case the screen didnt work anymore as soon the blob appeared... but was able to get it out with some tissue and rubbing.
also i saw some oil liquid under de screen - depending on the light outside.
so.. just take care.. this phone is very sensitive to any pressure on the screen and using it in a trouser pocket is already dangerous!
I've heard of this problem happening on other devices (see here, here, here, and although not what mine looks like, here), but I was wondering what I can do about this problem. This is called Newton's Rings, I believe, and there's a nice wikipedia article about it. Apparently it's a problem under the screen.
It's an oily smudge. It appears to be made up of asymmetric rainbow-colored rings and is apparently under the screen. It is only visible in indoor lighting in certain angles, and is less visible when the screen is on. When pressure is applied around this spot, it appears to shift slightly. It's been present for over a week on my device without much change.
The HD2 has a capacitive screen, so the method to correct these spots (the "duct tape method") is said not to work. How can I fix this problem? I'm pretty sure I didn't cause it since I was careful with my device--it could have been there (most likely) from the time of purchase.
Should I ask for an exchange at my local T mobile store? Should I try duct tape or a vacuum cleaner to suck the screen forward, or should I try to open the device up and detach the screen, or should I beg for a return?
Help!
PS: You might want to check your HD2's as well...
*deleted*
*deleted*
I think you would have to have a resistive screen to even have this problem. A capacitive screen doesn't have these "layers." And, it requires a curvature to induce the inference rings which a hard glass screen with no layers doesn't have.
I followed a couple of them threads some time ago, and if I remember correctly some users which had this problem you're postin' about have had their hd2 replaced by htc cause it should fall under warranty terms. Return it to your local t-mo store and ask for a replacement. Should they deny that, try calling htc customer care and see if you can send it in to corporate for repair/exchange. I'd recommend that you try official ways first before attempting to disassemble it or to fix it by yourself as you may end up voiding your warranty..
Since you have a US T-Mobile HD2, and it has been less than 14 days and within the return period, you should be able to get it replaced at the store.
This is obviously a problem with the screen and you shouldnt try to fix it in any way. If you have installed or modded it in any way then return it to stock condition and take it back to your store. They are obliged to give you a replacement as it is a faulty unit. do not accept anything less.
Mark.
First of all, why in the hell would you buy such a device with incredible screen real-estate... and NOT place a screen protector on it?
My screen hasn't even been touched by human hands. Let me guess, the next thing you're going to tell us is your device has a scratch on the battery cover...
Having a case on the device would have prevented such an incident from occurring in the first place. Problem solved.
Take better care of your investments folks...

I seem to be confused about why you need a screen protector when the screen is glass? I was under the impression that glass screens won't scratch. I can't see how a screen protector would protect a glass screen from pressure, so what's the point?

Alright, well... I'm not even going to dignify myself a response to your first question... for obvious reasons.
As for pressure... what PRESSURE could you possibly be applying to your device that is apparently going to render the screen useless? It's a ****ING Pocket PC, don't mistreat it. Protect your investments... it's common sense.
Seriously though, your first question... RETHINK exactly what it was that you had asked me... and then I'm pretty sure you'll realize the stupidity.

I don't get the attitude, I simply asked you, or anyone else who seems to think they need a screen protector on a glass screen; why they feel that way. As far as I know, it's like next to impossible to scratch it, (unless you carry loose diamonds in your pocket) and the pressure comment was me trying to understand why you feel the need to get a protector. With all that said, I wasn't knocking you wanting one (somebody's got to buy them) I was simply trying to see if I was misinformed about the durability of glass screens.
Heh, my bling-bling may scratch my phone screen That's how you can tell they are real diamonds . Though, you make a good point, glass screen shouldn't scratch, and if anything, a crappy thicker screen protector may hinder the conductivity of your fingers? Just my guess. On a side note, had my ipod touch in the same pocket as my keys once (hate the thing, but it was free) The back got scratched to hell, but the screen was nice and unscathed.

Alright. Well, my apologies for the "disrespect".
I'm merely saying that a screen sleeve, protector, or WHATEVER is how someone could go about preventing the oil corrosion that occurs from natural skin oils on the screen.
This isn't oil corrosion. No disrespect from me either, but this unit actually had a screen protector. And a case. So thanks, but no thanks.

I had exactly the same situation with my old Hermes (going back quite a few years). I got it through the post from Tmobile and was playing happily with it for about half an hour until I noticed an oily patch exactly as you describe. Rang up Customer Support and they asked me if I had sat on the phone or knocked it in any way.. And this was after having the phone in my possession for 30 minutes HAHA in the end they told me to take the phone to the nearest store to confirm the problem and I got a straight replacement.
I think its caused by a leak in the LCD. You can try, as sugested on other threads to get some tape and try to pull the glass away from the liquid but this would only really be worth trying if your phone was out of manufacturers warranty. Since you have not had your phone long at all you are entitled to a direct replacement under the Sale of Goods Act.
Going back to earlier posts, too much pressure could cause this sort of problem but as stated with a good quality glass which the HD2 has this is very unlikely unless you had an elephant sit on it
More likely the LCD is defective and if the oily patch is noticeble to you then the seller has no other recourse. If I was you I would deal with this matter as soon as possible though so that you get a stisfactory result.

Hey guys.
looking at your device, you have the same problem i have on my HTC TOUCH HD, mine had a small point in the middle, and after a few months it become bigger and now my screen wont work properly.
it means when i perss lets say "START" button, it reacts at the X button in the right of the screen.
adter looking over the net and reading about it, i can see a lot of devices from HTC has this problem, guess its a bad building quality who knows.
maybe it got hit a few times at the screen, maybe pressure who knows.
the thing is, CHANGE THE DEVICE before your screen wont react anymore, mine is Resistive screen. so i took a small niddle and lifted the screen from the left (the volume side) and squeezd it a bit, it went out, but a bit more came back after, that means something or some fluid is between tha screen, the Gap maybe i dont know.
ive also tried with a DUCT TAPE - worked for a few minutes than it came back again, but even when the oily part was gone the screen still was reacting not as before.
also there is a bad sound from the place you have the oily part under it' like if you press it with the Stylus or just your finger.
BE CAREFUL with thos devices!
Also ive heard something about PRESSURE differents between cities / countries and simillar can cause the screen defect.
for example - i live NOW in Eilat, its in Israel, and its a very very low place, i go home once a month, to a higher place (300M above), and it happaned since i moved here. it can be one more of the reasons to cause this defect.
well, my device is ruind, it can barely work now sometimes, if i press the screen from all of the sides or lifting it up with a niddle!
and that sucks!
BTW USE YOUR WARRENTY.
dont let HTC run away from their defaults and defects with thos devices, why do we have to pay on their mistakes of not making a good resistance materials for thos devices...its stupid.
specialy when it happanes to a lot of people with the same Devices!
i dont see any APPLE users having thos peoblems with IPOD / IPHONE!

All touchscreens suffer from defects (yes even ipdods and iphones lol). The trick is to send it back the moment you spot it and not sit on it and wait, hoping it will go away. It wont. You can use the tape method to pull the screen away from the bleed but the liquid will still be there and sooner or later it will just come back.
I noticed a bleed on my OLD hermes the day I got it from brand new, rang up the shop (tmobile uk) and they tried to tell me that I must have sat on it or dropped it. Everyone who purchases a device has a right that it will work for a 'reasonable' amount of time without defects appearing so you have to push your rights and get it changed (not fixed) for a new device.
If your device is out of warranty and you have a bleed on the screen the only thing you can really do is change the screen. These can be found on ebay and not that hard to do. For your Touch HD you can get one *HERE* but you have to weigh up whether its cheaper to just buy a new device or fix the one you have.
And I dont really think atmospheric pressure between different places would have any affect as lcd screens are built to work pretty much anywhere and if that was the case every time someone got on a plane their device would go capput.
Mark.
i know! that sounds not reasonable, but i looked at someone's Thread about that he went out of a plane and he noticed a huge spot in the middle of the screen, and few days later after going back on the flight it was gone.
that thing is very strange.

Ur welcome
Mark.
I've done a fair bit of searching both here and elsewhere online, and I've yet to find anything relating to a successful repair method for small surface scratches on the front screen (which may perhaps be impossible).
I've been going without a screen protector/case for the last few weeks, and despite being über careful, I have a very small scratch in the middle of the front screen. Not a show-stopper by any means, but enough to give me pangs of annoyance every time the light catches it.
Has anyone found a way to fix/conceal this kind of thing, which from what I understand is pretty difficult with a glass touch-screen?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I wonder if you can use rubbing compound on it? Also would a screen protector cover it? Don't feel bad I have a pocket full of dust under my screen. I just wonder why they didn't make a headphone jack plug.
The first thing I am going to try is to go after work today, get a screen protector, and see if that helps reduce the visibility of the scratch (in addition to obviously preventing new ones).
On the one hand I feel silly for stressing over it, but on the other....well, what can I say?
If I continue to keep waking up in cold sweats, I might have to resort to more hardcore methods...
About the only thing you can do, that I know of, is cover it with a screen protector. That is what I had to do on my previous phone when the screen got scratched. Fortunately, once I put the screen protector on it you couldn't see the scratches any more.
You might be able to fix it by putting toothpaste in the scratch and wiping it clean

Use toothpaste or jeweler's rouge (for normal glass at least)
I had one minor scratch on mine and tried fixing it with toothpaste. Didn't work. It actually made the problem worse by creating a bunch of tiny microscopic scratches around it so now it looks smudged right around the scratch all the time unless I'm always wiping it clean with a microfiber cloth.
Luckily for me, I'm getting the Evo replaced with a new one when my local store gets their new shipment in. I have some light leakage and a spot on the screen that is lighter than the rest of the screen (looks almost like a burn spot) which is a great excuse for me to return it and start fresh (and this time with a protector).
I'm not listening to these "scratch tests" for phones anymore. After babying my phone for a month and STILL mysteriously ending up with a scratch out of the blue, I can't risk not having a screen protector anymore.
I do t know how a dust particle got into my tn7 screen..can someone suggest a way to remove it?? I am not gonna take apart my tablet!! Its irritating and distracting!!!
Oh no! Luckily I haven't had this happen yet... actually, hasn't happened on any of my devices since my iPhone 3G long long ago (before I saw the light, haha). As for removing it, umm... yeah, you'd have to separate the screen and the outer glass, which a technician could probably do easily, and maybe even cheaply (maybe $20?), but there's no easy fix unfortunately.
