[Q] Stuck on Android 4.2! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I apologize in advance for not finding an appropriate thread.
So I forget which recovery/bootloader I've used to root this Sprint SPH-L720 Galaxy S4.. I believe it is from shabbypenguin or something.
I love the root features such as adblock, native hotspot, etc, but I need KitKat..
I get a notification that says System update downloaded - Touch to install.
It is the MF9 Android System Update. It crashes on the bootloader whenever I try to upgrade.
My phone version is as follows:
Software Version: L720VPUAMDL
Hardware version: L720.08
Model Number: SPH-L720
Android Version: 4.2.2
Baseband Version: L720VPUAMDL
Kernel Version: 3.4.0 [email protected] #1 Wed May 8 11:08:56 EDT 2013
Build Number: JDQ39L720VPUAMDL
Is there a way I can upgrade to 4.4 on this phone without doing a hard reset?
Bootloader Error when I pressed restart and update (yes i typed out the output..):

You cannot take an OTA update while rooted. This has been discussed 1000+ times.
There are several threads/guides about updating and keeping root and data. Please do your research.

you are correct. Next question is probably going to be along the lines of "how do I go about installing the update then?". which has also been answered.

So I was able to update to MF9 just fine using a no-wipe zip. I was then stupid enough to try to odin a kitkat tar and bricked my phone, I tried to zip back to the MF9 to no avail. Is there a failsafe method to revert to MF9 or recover files from internal storage before I choose to do a hard reset? I have about 2 years of fuel log data in the internal storage

Once you Odin kit kat you get what called Knox bootloader making it impossible to downgrade at the moment. Your best bet is that your stuck with kit kat at the moment.

Hi all, really need your help. 2 weeks ago I bought this device, before never used android. 3 days ago by connecting it to a computer, the Kies software has given the message
"that there is a new version", I agreed, and then device as if replaced, it start to work slowly stucking on some screens, such as phone book or phone itself, it gives a strange message, that he had to stop the work of a program. Then I tried to solve the problem, but everything i did not fixed the issue, I even think that made it worse. I did the following things.
I tried to root device, did it as it was written on some site, after a Odin has finished, I found SuperSu program, but SuperSu wrote that the binary ihe s not installed, checking the Root, no root access. 2 Performed Data factory reset twice did not helped, Performed to flash again the latest official firmware, but also did not helped, the problem not solved, Uninstall SuperSu. no longer know how else to help themselves, need professional help.
Please write me what should i do? how can return the previously firmware, or how to root it correctly and install new Rom.

Hi
I currently have the mh9 stock version with Knox . Theoretically can I change to the Google edition official ROM+root and still keep my warranty status 0x0 by doing the following steps?
1. Firmware initialization via kies(or restore in system settings)
2. Root the phone
3. Install custom recovery with odin
4. Install the GE ROM

[Q] Need help, rooted S4, wifi not working anymore

So I rooted my sprint s4, following these instructions:
http://qbking77.com/development/how-to-root-the-sprint-and-international-exynos-samsung-galaxy-s4/
Which worked great. Then, I followed these instructions for the hotspot modification:
http://qbking77.com/development/how-to-get-free-native-wifi-hotspot-on-the-sprint-samsung-galaxy-s4/
I was running the MF9 firmware, so I used that. I made a backup of the two files before copying the new ones over. I reset it, and it stopped on the sprint screen, so I followed the unrooting instructions here:
http://qbking77.com/development/how-to-unroot-and-unbrick-the-samsung-galaxy-s4/
Now, my wifi isn't turning on. It flashes for a second, then disappears, showing a "The device has detected an application attempting unpermitted actions and has stopped loading. To protect your device, it is recommended you reboot." alert.
The backups I made weren't there, so I assume it rebuilds those files. What do I do? I've tried factory resetting, but nothing has helped so far. I've read a few forum postings but they seem to all revolve around issues with new roms. I only used the stock one, so I'm not sure exactly what to do.
So, can anyone help me out? I'm not too far into these things, so easier instructions are better.
That alert is because you have Knox installed and rooted. You need a root browser and go into the system/app folder and delete the two files that begin with the name Knox.

So to do that, I'd use the odin program? And where do I get the different kernel?
To be honest you shouldn't be flashing if you don't fully read and learn before getting a rooted phone. Kernels are in the original development thread.
And you flash the kernel zips in a custom recovery.

I had no intention of flashing a new rom, only wanting to root it to remove some useless stock software, and move some other stuff to the SD card.
I'm guessing I want the first file here, right? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258107

I can't find any instructions on how to install that kernel, since it's a zip instead of a tar so I can't use odin. Everyone just says "use recovery," which doesn't help me at all, since I don't know what that is or how to do it. I've tried a few other kernels I've found on xda, but none have fixed it.
Flash custom recovery tar thru odin, theres a couple threads in development section with different recoveries...then simple flash kt kernel zip thru your new recovery ( you can access your new recovery by booting up the phone and holding down the volume down button)...I suggest you learn how to back up and restore your rom b4 trying this
Odin this recovery http://d-h.st/O8s its agats

Hmm weird, well here update to the newer update to this for here. Will be a pain in the ass but believe me this will solve all your problems.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2375523
Flash that in Odin and make sure you just get the huge file that's the only one you need. Extract what is inside and you will get a .tar.md5 file. Next do a factory reset of your phone. Boot into download mode. Flash that file. If you get any errors just delete the .md5 extension and reboot your computer and try again. Once done, it should boot will take awhile no more than 10 mins. If it doesn't boot take off battery and boot into recovery. You should stock recovery with the little green dead android. Its OK don't freak out just do a factory reset and reboot. Once that is done.
Download either odex or deoxeded tar file which ever you want here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357471
Once that is done you can flash that through Odin and you should be rooted and updated to the latest version.
You can also download twrp recovery here
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/jfltespr
All versions there. You can download stabled twrp 2.5.0.2 or download the newer one 2.6 0.3 as people have said it has been working for them and there you go. Its a lot but it gets the job done and all your problems go away.

No, I mean wifi at all. Also, I just noticed when I insert a microsd, it says it's safe to remove immediately. Loading from the SD card on recovery works though.
And I doubt sprint will help me, I've had the phone for a while and they wouldn't do anything for issues with my last phone, since it was the 15th day I had it. If I send it to samsung with the stock recovery, kernel and rom, will they be able to tell?

I was hoping to avoid doing the full flash again. I have seen some threads of some Nexus 7 members flashing the required files they were so kindly provided so they can move forward to the 4.4.2 update similar to my situation. If I can't then I guess I will have to suck it up and erase her info and start over.

This forum is for the Sprint Galaxy S4, and it seems you have the T-Mobile device. Here's a link to the tmobile forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile
MK2 is the version number that is specific to Sprint. T-Mobile may have the same number or not. But all you need to do is download the .tar file for the latest 4.3 ROM that is available for your phone, put the phone in download mode, and flash via the ODIN utility that you can download as well. This is not a complete guide, so see the relevant threads in the TM forum. Alternatively, there may be a T-Mobile .tar for 4.4.2 that you can ODIN directly. It is up to you to see if it wipes data or not. The one for Sprint does.

[Q] OTA S4 Update 4.4.3?

AT&T S4 SGH 1337 Apparently I can download an update OTA and Im already on 4.4.2 so is this 4.4.3 or something else. I dont want to update if it patches an exploit or adds more bloatware. I found nothing online talking about it so idk.

[Q] Galaxy s4 in a weird Not-Rooted/Rooted state

What is it that you really want - to regain root or to unroot?
1. To regain root - read the root section of All Things AT&T thread
2. To unroot
a. Without losing data -- I am not sure exactly how to do this
One way would be to re-root and then unroot using the superSu app.
b. With losing data -- Oding NB1 stock and update to latest. Follow Return to Stock
I would like to have it go back to unrooted status. I was hoping for a data safe method. But at this point whichever will work. I am assuming i'll have to root, then unroot. But I didnt know if this causes problem as apps believe it to be rooted but the system says I am not.
I'm having the same dilemma
I rooted my s4 using towelroot. Later att forced an update to 4.4.2 which i thought wouldn't work because it was tooted. But it actually did work and updated. Now the phone is not rooted but it seems that there are some files that are still somewhere that pretty much makes it be partially rooted but with not real root access. Now that the next update is being forced by att for version 4.4.4 it doesn't work. It stores installing at 27% with a failed message. I uninstalled towel root and super user but with no success. I whiped the partition and no success. I did a factory reset which i thought it would work and remove the files that maked look rooted and no success. What should i do exactly to unroot it?

Now the phone is not rooted but it seems that there are some files that are still somewhere that pretty much makes it be partially rooted but with not real root access. Now that the next update is being forced by att for version 4.4.4 it doesn't work. It stores installing at 27% with a failed message. I uninstalled towel root and super user but with no success. I whiped the partition and no success. I did a factory reset which i thought it would work and remove the files that maked look rooted and no success. What should i do exactly to unroot it?

You would have to Odin the nb1 tar file, it's the only version that exists. Then ota to 4.4.4, nj4. Any version of Odin works. It will wipe your device and you'll have to start over setting it up.
