[Q] AT&T Locked bootloader = WTF - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howdy,
Are we all just waiting for a workaround to AT&T's locked bootloader to flash a custom recovery? Ditching AT&T is not an option for me at present. I have not found anyone on AT&T flashing custom ROMs at this point. Anyone know something different?
Thanks...David

You're correct....
Until the bootloader is unlocked you'll be stuck with stock.
Only way around it at the minute is to move away from AT&T but u have said u can't.

I don't think AT&T S5 will ever see root and such. I hope I'm wrong because my wife has the AT&T version and luckily I have the T-Mobile.

You would have to find someone that is willing to trade you for the tmobile version. Or just sell yours and buy the tmobile version.

Does the tmobile version fully work on AT&T? I've been looking for somebody that actually has done this, since I want to buy the S5 but not the AT&T version, being it's locked. I would think so but wanted to be safe.
Thanks.

Yes, everything the ATT model can do, the tmobile one can do.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I bought the T-Mobile S5. Everything appears to work (except WiFi calling, since AT&T doesn't support it) and you get WiFi Tethering and Download Boosting (which AT&T S5 has disabled). Lastly, you have to manually create APN Setting (settings/more networks/mobile networks Access Point Names) for AT&T LTE (see below for those of you that need the settings)
Getting the phone was more of a pain than it needed to be. T-Mobile refused to sell me the phone, since I wasn't a customer (bought it from Fry's). And they refused to unlock the phone for the same reason (I ended up using unlockslocks.com to unlock, took about 2 hrs to get the code)
APN Setting for AT&T
NAME: (type anything you like, this doesn't matter. Use "ATT LTE" or "My Phone", something like that. Just remember that every access point you create should have a different name.)
APN: phone
Proxy: (not set)
Port: (not set)
Username: (not set)
Password: (not set)
Server: (not set)
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: (not set)
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
APN: enabled (may need to check this, not sure about your model)
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: None

It is the easiest root I have seen. Download the apk, ensure install from unknown sources is checked, open the app and wait for the phone to reboot. BAM! DONE!

It's kind of like jailbreak.me. I wonder how many people are going to go to random stores and do this .
And it doesn't trip knox.

Yeah, exactly. I waited and waited and waited and as soon as I buy it for tmobile, it gets rooted. I was going to pay full price for AT&T. Would have saved me $50 on unlock code and I could have used work discount on the phone. lol. Oh well. Great to see both (verizon and at&t) finally rooted.

Even tho we have root, Isn't the bootloader still locked down on the AT&T version? I have the T-Mobile, but I first had the AT&T version. So glad I made the switch to unlocked TMO on AT&T network.

The bootloader is still locked. That is going to take another method to get unlocked. Having root is a big step though.

I just gotten off the phone with a Straight Talk rep and she said that there sim cards wouldnt work in verizons phones.....and she also said that T-Mobile wouldnt work. I also went to ST web page and checked to see if my phone was compatable by looking at a list of devices on the b.y.o.b my SM-N900V wasnt on the list however it gave me the option of entering my MEID # and it said it was compatable. Just a little confused....does it work or not.

I don't have experience with ST but with band 4 enabled I was able to put a buddy's T mobile sim card in and get voice and LTE data after configuring T mobiles APN.

So, with a new straight talk at&t sim card in a verizon galaxy note 3, why would I be getting a "non-verizon sim card" error and no service?

What's so funny? Am I missing something? As I understand it, all verizon note 3's are unlocked... here's what I'm basing this off of: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480320
wanted to know this too!!
before i left for vacation (here in the PHILIPPINES) i tried using a T-MOBILE simcard on my NOTE3. it worked perfectly OK. thought its unlocked for any GSM network.
when i got here (PHILIPPINES), immediately put in a local simcard and it says "NON-VERIZON SIM" and cant get any signal.
tried all three major phone networks simcards and they all dont work.
can anybody please let us know what is the workaround to this issue?
any help is greatly appreciated!!! c",)

Ah, fair enough. The intention wasn't to do this - the verizon note 3 is from ebay and came factory unlocked. I was planning to use it on verizon till I learned their $60/$70 prepaid plans don't support 4G devices
So, found straight talk, checked this phone's IMEI in their system and it said it'd work... but it's not. There's a lot of confusion out there.. people in this thread saying it "just works" on tmobile and at&t, some saying that it "just works" on straight talk (even mentioning that they're using the at&t compatible sim), but so far, no luck for me.
Here are the confusing points:
1) The verizon note 3 comes factory unlocked. If this is true, why do links like the one you just sent me even exist?
2) The straight talk bring your own device kit from walmart ($60, includes one month of $45 unlimited everything) comes with 5 separate activation options:
- AT&T-compatible full-sized sim
- AT&T-compatible micro sim
- Tmobile-compatible full-sized sim
- Tmobile-compatible micro sim
- CDMA scratch-off network access number
The AT&T ones say "4G LTE available", T-mobile ones say "4G HSPA+ Available", and the CDMA one doesn't mention anything about 3 or 4g, so naturally I thought I should try the AT&T one first. I activated this sim card on straight talk, ported my number, once that was complete I put it in the note 3 and booted up - and I have no service, "emergency calls only", and "non-verizon sim". Just to be certain the phone is unlocked, I tried a completely different, genuine t-mobile sim in the same phone and it worked fine.. it still says "non-verizon sim" but I have service and can make calls.
Really hoping someone can shed some light on what might be happening here.

Aha, thankfully my problem was a simple one - I called straight talk and had them check the status of the sim card I was trying to use (the micro at&t compatible one) - turns out, it still wasn't activated. SO - they activated it right then and there and everything started working immediately on the phone, too - started right up with the same 4G service my tmobile phone gets in our neighborhood.
SO - in case any one else stumbles upon this, YES, you can use a VERIZON galaxy note 3 with the straight talk AT&T-compatible sim card with the factory stock verizon ROM and no further unlocking. What a crazy world we live in
I have a Verizon note 3 running on T-Mobile. I bought a prepaid plan starter kit at Walmart. It came with the sim and the first month service for $42. Any T-Mobile sim will work. All I did was pull my Verizon sim out and replace it with the T-Mobile sim. Changed the apn settings and it works great! I had to root and other stuff to enable band 4, but you won't have to. The latest update enabled it.

What data do you get with T-Mobile ? Edge , LTE , hspa ? Where do you live if you dont mind me asking ? Have you tried installing tmobile Roms at this point ? Thanks !!
The vzw Note 3 on T-Mobile gets full 4G lte AND hspa+ 21 mbps (on areas reformed to 1900mhz pcs band, not on their original AWS band 4 1700/2100 mhz hspa+ 42 mbps).

I work several blocks from downtown Pittsburgh and I live 15 miles outside of Pittsburgh. Both places I get ~80dBm and 100dBm signal with 20mb - 35mb down, and 10 to 20 up. I'm only on hspa occasionally, but speeds are fast. Their edge network is painful. I'm not on it often in the area but when I am I get ~.15mb - .20mb downloads. I would try to find someone in your area that has T-mobile and see what kind of service they get before switching.
Noob needs direction
Ok. After spending many trips and waiting many hours for the guy at a local shop that flashes phones and sells prepaid services.....I have resorted to trying to do some reading and figure out how to do it myself or at least get some info so I don't waste any more money. I have a galaxy s4 on AT&T prepaid and pay 50 per month for unlimited with working hot spot. All good but wanted to get a Note 3. Is it possible to get a Note 3 to work like my s4??
Sorry if I posted in the wrong section. I just need to know which note 3 to buy and if it will work. I will keep reading and searching but wanted a little direction.
Thanks for any help
Sure CUZ... just remember Verizon is CMDA and AT&T is GSM they are both bootloader locked and will need safestrap work-a-round!
Good Luck

Straight Talk Verizon Note 3 activation
I have a VZW Note 3, after contacting Straight Talk's *(microchasm) support I am told by a human that the IMEI# of the phone is not compatable with their "bring your own phone" system. I have the micro sim card in the phone, I think I just need them to turn it on... Sorry if I am over simplifying things, at this point I am completely irate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The previous arrangement with VZW was a concession line that was canceled.

T-Mobile Stock ROM Better Than AT&T Stock ROM, no doubt

Been noticing that the that T-Mobile Stock ROM is Better Than AT&T Stock ROM, no doubt
The T-Mobile Stock ROM is feature-rich, includes all Samsung amenities whereas the AT&T Stock ROM is crippled.
Tmobile will always be better than at&t
BAD ASS NOTE 4
When John Legere took over, he made a concerted effort to make T-Mobile USA simple. One of the side effects of that was cutting back on customisations of OSs (e.g., less bloatware, less feature removal, etc.). This has made T-Mobile USA Android ROMs some of the cleanest carrier ROMs available.

After having sold my ATT Note 4 because of the POS locked bootloader I bought a Tmobile one and just got it yesterday. Out of the box the Tmobile one is faster overall, I'm assuming due to less bloatware. I'm pretty impressed so far. Now if I could just get my data to work, calling ATT later to make sure it's provisioned for LTE.

Dont give them your tmobile IMEI, their system will automatically detect a non AT&T phone and lock you out of LTE. Find another at&T IMEI of an LTE phone and provide them

They don't care anymore. Several posters have had no issues at all, and I also had no issue. They didn't bat an eye and I told them right away it was a tmobile phone. Took about 5 minutes for them to set me up. I get LTE perfectly.
I gave away as a Christmas present the AT&T crapware loaded Note 4 that I bought retail price.
Bought the TMobile version, paid $30 for the unock code and did the region unlock. All before putting in my AT&T SIM card.
When I booted Note 4 with SIM card, it immediately set up itself to the proper NET setting and LTE worked no problems.
Awesome firmware after I used a ROOT uninstaller to get rid of TMobile Apps, Carrier IQ, and some Samsung Apps that I'll never use.

Guaranteed your device is blacklisted. Verizon doesn't blacklist the AT&T bands. Just the Verizon and t-mobile bands. I see it all the time. Keep using it on AT&T and you'll be fine

Switched the phone to global mode in setting and set APN. All newer Verizon LTE phones work with any GSM networks. I had used the Verizon S7e on t-mobile when it first launched.

Actually all S7/S7 edge SD820 phones are both GSM and CDMA, the bands are just disabled through the firmware.
OP, have you checked which bands T-Mobile is using in your area and if the VZW model has those activated?
I just found on my last update on my T-mobile s7 edge, that if you go into settings under connections, mobile networks, network operators, default search, manual, and it will search, and then listed:
T-Mobile
AT&T
Verizon
Sprint
312530
I have T-Mobile sim in it still but I selected Verizon, and it changed to say no network. I did it again and switched back to T-Mobile, and it went right back to T-Mobile with connected to the T-Mobile network.
My brother is switching his account over to Verizon, and he gave me his s7 edge T-Mobile branded with latest update of January 19, 2018. I used the unlock app from T-Mobile and it said it was permanently unlocked. I can't verify it will work because I do not have the sim card yet, but my he said he will try to get the sim card to me but he said that Verizon told him that it work just fine on my phone and with those settings I said above, it should be working by using manual setup. Not sure yet until I get that sim card. Crossing my fingers.
Oops, this is opposite of what the thread is about, but should still work, LOL!
Try flashing U firmware onto your phone you should be all good then dude.

Yep, you'll need another carriers sim card though for the unlock prompt to pop up when you reboot the device. I always use www.unlockbase.com , Took about an hour to get the code the last time I ordered one. They also have top notch customer service and support!
I ended up going with h20 wireless so I didn't have to unlock. So glad I picked this phone up because man its beautiful but hopefully I don't keep hopelessly reading the forum looking for a bootloader unlock for months on end like I did with my Verizon s4 and s5. Hopefully at&t won't keep us locked down forever

Hahaha good one. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you, AT&T isn't know for its cooperation with developing communities. As long as the phones are branded, they stay locked. They also don't provide advanced features for non branded phones (WiFi calling, VoLTE, etc.).

See if @faux123 will improve the eng kernel, that would help greatly. I think that kernel is the only reason why we have root. So the problem is kernel stability, not ROM selection.
I went with an AT&T prepaid service so I didn't need to unlock but I'm having problems. I'm on the echo rom and I initially configured the phone with H20 apn settings and the service provider in the status bar said H20. Upon a reboot I can no longer access apn settings without a 3rd party app and my service provider in the status bar says at&t and sms no longer works. I can access apn settings through a 3rd party app after reboot and reset apns to default, pull sim, reboot and replace sim and re enter the H20 apn to get it working but it's getting pretty aggravating being I'm in the middle of modding what little I can so I'm rebooting several times a day.

If you enter it too many times incorrectly, it will be unlockable.

Did each phone require it to me paid off?
If the phone keeps getting paid off in installment plans and I just wanted to use a different service, can I still unlock it?
Yes successfully unlocked Wife S7 Edge and my S7 via unlock unit site, both under contract, have only like 30 days with them and not paid off yet and got code in less than 10 min for both. On that site you have different options on prices cheaper ($18-$29) you have to wait like 3-4 days and more expensive,($41) in mins. I went for the expensive one I don't like to wait. ?
A friend from AT&T told me new phones have to be at least to be 30 days activated for systems to generate unlock codes for 3rd party sites to access.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I purchased a used iPhone 7 and it seems like there was a balance on AT&T. It works fine on AT&T but I want to use it overseas in the next few weeks, and the only solution seems to pay someone on ebay $100 to remove the network lock. I tried a seller who charged $20 but it never worked. Does anyone know how these people do it? please pm me if you have any idea$ Thank you!

Can someone please advise how I can flash the rom to jailbreak?

Yes, Unlock for about $2 on eBay. Will work with Tmo & ATT, and their MVNOs. You may, or may not, need to switch to 3G for first call to register (I had to), then you can switch back to LTE without any further problems. You also may need to manually add APN, but I did not need to.
It's a pretty solid phone and can be had for $40 at Walmart, or price-match elsewhere. Really stinks that the bootloader can't be unlocked. I didn't think it would bother me...but it really does. Oh well, I knew it before I bought it. Will be a good backup.

Have you tried entering your APN manually? Try Googling Tmobile apn settings.
Others are getting it to work on Tmo.. https://slickdeals.net/f/10418732-s...w-free-store-pickup?p=103877488#post103877488

Maybe your SIM card is activated on another phone. Happened to me on MetroPCS. I put in a SIM that was activated on another phone...it worked fine for about 5 mins., then all service was removed and it said Emergency Calls Only. You really should try entering the APN manually, if you haven't done so already. I'm now using Cricket with no problems at all.

I think that's the issue. Same thing happened to me. I tried to use my gf's SIM from MetroPCS in mine. It worked for like 5 mins and then lost service. MetroPCS doesn't recognize this phone for some reason because it is a Verizon phone. You could call them and try to add it to your account. Cricket picked it up easily. I just had to do a lot of searching for the correct APN.

Call MetroPCS and register your SIM to your E4, go with Cricket, Straight Talk, or Total Wireless. There's always a possibility that Metro won't allow your Verizon E4 on their network because they want you to buy theirs. I'm sure...as you know, theirs don't even have a fingerprint reader.

Personally, if I were you...I'd go with Cricket, At&t, Straight Talk (At&t), or Total Wireless(Verizon), because T-Mobile (MetroPCS) coverage is not all that great.
