Custom Unlocked on boot? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just got my S5 from Verizon, when it boots up is shows a lock unlocked and says "Custom Unlocked". Can anyone tell me what that means?
Thanks in advance.

Most likely that ART is enabled as the runtime system.

Sorry, but thank you for the info, that probably is it.

Of course! Just a pointer.
Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Yup! It's ART. I assume you turned it on yourself, but if you didn't, go to:
"Settings" > "About Phone" > 7x Tap "Build Number". This will enable "Developer Options"
Go back to "Settings" and select "Developer Options"
Go down to where it says "Select runtime system."
Tap and choose "Use Dalvik"
After rebooting, your "Custom" boot icon will go away.

Kit Kat Dialer on 4.4 [ROOT]

Not sure where to put this. but I wanted to share with maximum amount of people so General it is! I managed to get the Kit Kat dialer working on GEL. This should also work for any other launcher as well. You will need ROOT since you have to change permissions.
Here is what you'll need to download and install:
1. com.google.android.dialer-1.01.apk
2. Icon Changer free
3. Secure Settings
4. An icon pack of your choosing (I used a Kit Kat icon pack so I could stay true)
Step 1: Copy com.google.android.dialer-1.01.apk to /system/priv-app and change permissions to 644. Now reboot.
Step 2: Open Icon Changer free and choose Secure Settings from the shortcut tab.
Step 3: When Secure Settings launches, choose Launch Activity.
Step 4: Pick Google Dialer from apps.
Step 5: Select [Phone] com.android.dialer.DialtactsActivity from drop down and save.
Step 6: It makes you select a Shortcut icon here but we'll overwrite in the next step so just choose randomly and save.
Step 7: Change title to Google Dialer and click change under the icon to pick your new Shortcut icon.
Step 8: Press OK and now it will create an icon on your homescreen. When you click it it will open up Google Dialer!
And viola, you now have stuck one to the man (aka vzw). It's not perfect. You still have to keep your other Phone unfrozen and any calls that come in will still use the old phone. Also if Icon Changer or Secure Settings in in cache, it will pop up Icon Changer or Secure Settings for a split second before loading Google Dialer. Just remove the background app and it will stop doing that.
Thank you very much for this! when i update to kk will be the first thing to do
Not showing up
After following the instructions, the KitKat Google Dialer isn't showing up. Only the older original one is. Any thoughts as to why?

Not sure without more information. The shortcut should appear on your homescreen. Those were the exact steps I took. You could try a different program. Another person suggested Activity Launcher which basically does what the combination of Secure Settings and Icon Changer do. You might want to try that.
does this work 100%?
I performed this and now my phone is stuck at the droid logo...any quick way to recover?
You no longer need to use an activity launcher since 4.4.4 . just install the zip and you will have the dialer I have been running this for a while on 4.4.4.

Install nandroid if you didn't make a nandroid before doing this shame on you. I would run an fxz save data that will get you back to stock without having to download all your apps again.

I have a nandroid backup, issue is how do i get to it from outside the phone? ie on my Windows box
So you can't even get into recovery or boot loader by holding power button volume up.

i can, however i do not know what to do when in this mode. i can get to recovery.

i think it's the exposed after taking the update from motorola. i reinstalled the xposed famework, and now it's stuck during boot. I saw in an article that you can flash the file /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/files/Xposed-Disabler-Recovery.zip, but i do not know how.
What update? And do you have stock recovery or twrp is your boorloader unlocked

just tried a factory wipe and still stuck. i am pretty sure it was setting the 644 perm above, or enabling xposed...either way is this thing a brick?

stock recovery, and the update motorola put out for volte and some other fixes... the s**k test
Damn stock recovery your beat on the nandroid. You may be able to fxz have you tried that. I am not sure if the update changed anything that would not let you flash the fxz. Can't hurt to try at this point. All it will do is fail.

Ok this is what I want you to do get into fastboot (bootloader screen) I want you to download these two files https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxcWmflauqkuRzMzRlZBb3J2U3c&usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxcWmflauqkuXzVGV0k1Y1c1NEk/view?usp=sharing one is a adb tool folder the other is twrp recovery. After you download put everything into one folder on your desktop. Open a command prompt window make sure your phone is connected and can be seen in fastboot by typing in the command prompt fastboot devices it should show your device. If not unplug it and try again till you see it. Once you see the devvice hold the shift key and right click on the adb folder and choose open command window here from the drop down menu. Now type in this command prompt mfastboot flash recovery twrp-xt1080.img it will flash the recovery img now on the fastboot screen pick recovery. You should be in twrp and be able to install your nandroid.
done. I don't see my backups though or my sd card. is there a way i can flash the stock rom?

Xposed should have put a Xposed-Disabler-Recovery.zip on the root of your sd. Try flashing that in twrp. Then you'll know if its an xposed issue.

it seems a factory wipe, nothing works... i think it was setting the perm on that folder in the system folder to 644 is where it's stuck. my bootloader is unlocked also
If you did a factory wipe in stock recovery then it would erase your SD card. I'm guessing that's why you don't see your nandroid.

[Q] Option to remove lock screen grayed out

I tried several Wi-Fi tethering apps, and one of them required a lock screen as part of the setup. So I setup a Pattern screen lock. I ended up not using that app (changed some settings in the native app and got it to work) and would like to get rid of the lock screen, but can't. The option "NONE" is grayed out. Under it is says: " Disabled by administrator, encryption policy, or credential storage."
How can I solve this ??
Thanks,

There may not be a fix if your boot is locked.
Wouldn't a factory reset fix this. If i read correctly you installed a secondary lock screen did you make it a system file? If you didn't then I would think a factory reset would cause it to default to the original.
But I must admit I don't do much with this phone

Hold all keys til screen out. Keep holding both vol keys while you toggle pwr off, on, off. Then vol scrolls down to adb fastboot then vol up to select.
If this works then you can restore with rsd.

[Q] No signal RED X All info in status shows as UNKNOWN

Hello! Long story short, I got sprint to unlock the handset for international use and sent it overseas to my brother. It worked for a while but then it stopped so he took it to a phone repair place and they messed with it for a while and couldn’t figure it out and gave back. Now I have the phone back in the US and want to use it but its completely effed up, theres no signal AT ALL.. its in the latest firmware NG2 I even ODIN the whole phone with the NG2.tar ..
It won’t respond to ##72786” it tries to pull the screen but everything is blank. The Status screen shows “unknown” to everything. The APN screen shows “LTE / SPRINT OTA” as otasn but its not checked and its grayed out so can’t select it.
What should/can I do? Please see screenshots. Everything works (bluetooth/wifi/etc) except the radio. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Did you try just flashing the modem with Odin?

The only thing to do is just reflash the whole ng2 tar and do a factory reset on stock recovery. Or also when you flash untick the reboot and just manually reboot the phone cause the modem isnt sticking.

I've tried everything you suggest except manually rebooting. So to confirm, I leave everything as default (in ODIN 3.07) but un-tick the "Auto Reboot" checkmark which would leave only "F Reset Time" and flash the whole NG2 tar. Once its done I unplug the phone and pull the battery and then hold the home-volup-power to go into recovery and the rest is history? Tia!

Weird ultra power saving mode bootloop

So I have an att s5 active (SM-G870A) on android 4.something (I don't remember the firmware). It's been rooted for the past 2 years, and I've never had problems with it. About last week I put it into ultra power saving mode to try and save some juice when I didn't have my charger. Once I tried to exit the ultra power saving mode it opened a box saying it was exiting when the wheel froze. I gave it a couple of minutes before I held the down the power button to force a restart. When I turned it back on it was still in ultra power saving so I went to turn it back off again, only this time it told me that touchwiz home had crashed, which made sense as I had it disabled via titanium backup. The same box as before came up to tell me upsm was turning off but then it froze and shut off. This is where it left me. Ever since then whenever I try to boot it up it comes on, I unlock it with my passcode, then (without my prompting) tells me it's exiting upsm, then restarts itself back in upsm. I have a couple of seconds between reboots to try and mess with settings and it says it's still in upsm so I can't try and turn it back on to prevent the loop.
I have a lot of personal stuff on the internal sd card, so I don't want to system wipe. Are there any ways to change settings remotely? For example, can I somehow toggle the "turn off ultra power saving mode" remotely?
Also, I have read conflicting info about what data is removed on a factory reset. I expect it to remove things like apps, but will it remove my photos and music for example?
Another option I've considered is reflashing stock firmaware but the only downloads I've found are for the non-active s5 or from sites with 50kb/s download speeds. Should I bother downloading one of these and trying that?
TL;DR - Phone tries to exit ultra power saving mode, but just shuts off and reboots, over and over. Will doing a factory reset delete my photos and music? Are there other ways to fix this?
Thanks :fingers-crossed:

Then download it and flash only the system Img in Odin onto your phone to extract the system Img from the firmware use 7 zip file manager and extract the tar file if the file ends in md5 edit the name of the file so it is g901a(whateverisinthemiddle).tar
Then extract this tar file and click add and choose the system Img and make it a tar file flash this tar in Odin

Boot in TWRP and click on Backup, then backup what you want to save (maybe data? But I don't think you can restore it or the password may be required again) and save it in the micro SD or in the computer. Maybe you can save the files you want to keep directly with a file browser or with the computer.
After done the backup, click on Wipe and swipe the confirmation. This will wipe data, so a normal factory reset and you should be able to boot the phone normally as new.
