[Q] Help! Flashing a ROM with Philz Touch Recovery - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so, I have a rooted GS4 GT-I9500 with the supersu of Philz Touch Recovery.
I only flashed PT Recovery with Odin and used it to root the phone in its advanced settings.
Now, I want to flash a ROM, which is a game actually, PokemonFireRed.zip and it's specially made for a GameBoy emulator app. I tried to flash it with ROM toolbox so it becomes playable, but ROM toolbox only works with CWM / TWRP recoveries. I'm not changing my recovery.
What can I do?

That file you're trying to run is run by an emulator.. You need to open the emulator app and then navigate to downloads and open it with it

PS : Touch Philz Recovery is an Advanced version of CWM

I'm just after rooting and would like to install clockworkmod so that I can do a nandroid backup.
Where can I download the files?

OK I've ROM manager installed. So is that basically cwm or what? I'm new this.
If I want to flash a new ROM, I just make a backup of current stock ROM using the back up feature and then click install ROM?

Simply..no. You have successfully got root access? I would start by uninstalling ROM manager and install goo manager from pstore, from there you can install a custom recovery ( CWM or TWRP ). I would also suggest doing a backup as soon as you install cwm or twrp before trying to flash Roms!

Yes, I have root access and Superuser and busybot files installed. But no CWM
I don't understand why rom manager is so different to goo manager? Do I need to download CWM from somewhere else or does it come with Rom/Goo manager?
Very confusing to know what to do now.
You can use ROM manager but I think most prefer goo manager or ROM toolbox. I prefer goo, a lot of people are using twrp instead of cmw as it does things different ( backup to USB/ smaller backups) if you use goo just open go to top right corner, click, select install open recovery and follow instructions to install the recovery of choice. Hope this helps.

Thanks.
Have CM10 flashed now.
Just wondering is there an easier/quicker way to get all my apps and data back on the nexus rather than manually one by one installing from playstore again??
I've titanium backup pro and I made a backup before I flashed if that's any good?
If you backed up apps you can open titanium go to top right, click on the folder with check mark and restore from there ( just apps not system) or just click on backup restore and do them individually.

ROM Toolbox has a recovery installer that includes TWRP. Just run the install; it'll overwrite current recovery.
It's under Tools - ROM Management - Recovery

I don't recommend using an app to install a custom recovery. I've seen too many reports of people bricking their device with it.
It's just as easy to use a simple tool to do it...this is the one I prefer:

It lets you pick TWRP or CWM and will do the whole thing for you.
If you use rom manager or goo manager ONLY for putting a recovery on it works pretty well. It's when you use it to flash roms is when you can get into trouble. I'd recommend deleting it after getting your recovery. It's too easy to play with it and find the wrong rom for your device. Especially for someone new to flashing.

Uninstall Philz Touch 5

Hi. How do I removed / uninstall Philz Touch 5 because I want to try TWRP 2.6.3.0. I had installed Goo Manager and installed TWRP but rebooting to Recovery, it will reboot to Philz TOuch's recovery.
Thank you.
flash this twrp 2.5.0.3 zip in recovery and then reboot recovery. see if it sticks. if it does, stay on that version. i've heard it works better than the newer releases. cheers
Just flash TWRP in your recovery

You can't use that to do it. You have to take that zip file that beerdroid posted and save it to your sd card. Save it in the root so it's easy to find. You have to boot into Philz and flash that zip.
I don't ever recommend the Goo Manager. There has been so many people that has had problems with it, especially after flashing a new ROM. It's not because it's a bad program, it's because sometimes when you flash a new ROM the prop changes so it tricks Goo Manager.

I'm experiencing the same thing. TWRP wasn't able to load the Cyanogenmod SNAPSHOT, but Philz did and I don't have WiFi just like when I loaded the unstable version so I'm trying to delete Philz and it won't go away. Why did my TWRP disappear? arghhh...... I wish I had a Nexus 5.

[Q] install Philz recovery over TWRP

I'm currently running a custom G Pro ported KitKat ROM and TWRP. I'd like to try a different ported ROM, but I have Loki issues and Philz should get me around that. However, I can't get philz to flash over TWRP - I keep getting errors after flashing the recovery zips and end up going back into the ROM and using AutoRec to reinstall TWRP.
Any tried and true methods someone can recommend to install philz over TWRP with KitKat?
I'm not opposed to using ADB and pushing files over if that's what it takes.
Thanks

Have you tried the app flashify from the playstore. It will actually download any recovery you want and then flash it for you among other very nice features. Try that if you haven't yet and if that doesn't work use terminal emulator to dd the image. Just extract the .img from the recovery and put it on your sdcard and rename the extracted image to recovery.img and in terminal emulator type su > enter, then type dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery and hit enter. You should see some numbers saying records processed in + out and it will show a certain amount of time. Then that means you typed everything correctly and type reboot recovery and you should be in your recovery of choice. Hope that helped
