[Q] Slow Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My 2012 16 GB Nexus 7 gets vey slow over time and then I have to wipe it and do a factory restore. It has stock 4.4.2. I understand that the TRIM command was implemented in 4.3, which what was supposed to be causing the slowness. Are others still experience slow Nexus 7's even after Google supposedly fixed this? I would rather not install other ROM's
Thanks.

I have the exact same issue on my 2012 N7. It's slow, very slow, for instance if I'm listening music on it, I can't do anything else or the music becomes choppy. Mine is rooted with stock rom.

Same here. But mine is non rooted stock. Was rooted before but after a few factory resets and reflash stock firmware im now not rooted. There is some problem with trim what I have understand from my little reading on the net.
Thinking of flashing cyanogenmod and see if they have made a solution to this.
If anyone have a tip your welcome to share.

Yeah, but that TRIM problem was addressed with Android 4.3 I guess, but the issue still exists on my N7. I simply cannot multitask on mine or it will freeze everything, it's frustrating.

It was supposed to be addressed in 4.3 but to my experience it wasn't...
Mine freeze aswell and are really sluggish. Checking the "best ROM" thread ATM to see if I get a good tip on ROM with kernel.

Same issue here. I read once that it had something to do with how it wrote to SD card. That a brand new grouper wouldn't have the same issues because it would be running this from the the starr. Someone suggested formatting the card and re flashing from adb, but I was never clear about how they would do that, nor were they clear about whether it truly fixed the problem.
I find that switching to Nova launcher helps, but then it starts bogging down too... Very frustrating ? .

I was just posting about this issue. I have 6Gbs free.. Any solution? Mine is 16Gb wifi Thanks!

Both my wife's and my 2012 16GB N7 suffer from this on occasion. I was running rooted stock, but decided to give Rastakat a go. It's AOSP with a couple of extras, but it has made an improvement with the slowdowns. I also gave SD Maid from the app store a go. That freed up a considerable amount of space for me and helped as well. Since I just converted my N5 to F2FS, I'm considering doing the same with my grouper to see if it makes a difference.

I have the same issue. Mine seems to be more responsive when less than half of the total storage is used. Ridiculous, I know, but that's the only thing that seems to work for me.

Well, to be honest, I cannot even update apps from Google Play due to slowness. I'm trying with SD Maid... it doesn't seem to work either!

The auto TRIM command seems to be broken for the Nexus 7 (2012) in Kit Kat. I've experienced the same slowdown on 3 different 4.4.2 ROMs so today after loading SlimKat I decided to download the Lag Free Fix we used to have to run with 4.2 and sure enough it took a few minutes to run which indicates the TRIM was needed. Even with a fresh install the speed difference and less laggy interface was quite noticable
Try the Lag Free Fix on Google Play, it won't hurt anything and I bet you'll see a difference
BTW this is not a problem with my Galaxy SIII and Nexus 10 running Kit Kat, just the N7 2012

[Q] Nexus 7 running incredibly slow

My 1st generation Nexus 7 started running incredibly slowly - to the point of unusability - around the time I set up a second user profile on it for my fiancée. I'm not sure if these two are connected, however we are using the same two-profile setup on our Nexus 10 with no issues.
N7 was running stock, and I finally had enough of not being able to use it so I wiped and installed the latest nightly of CM which I'm running on both my N4's and also the N10. Since flashing CM on the N7, there has been little improvement in the speed of the device.
I'm very hesitant to put it down to a hardware problem, as it seems very unlikely to me. I think it's far more likely that there is a misbehaving app or service that I had before, and re-installed since flashing CM and is continuing to cause problems.
Looking at the battery usage graph, I can't see anything obvious that stands out. Is there any other way I can find out if there is a misbehaving app or service that's causing this problem? Do you have any other suggestions on how I can narrow down what the problem may be?
Many thanks.
How much memory do you have still free on it? It's a known fact, that if you go low of memory (<1-2GiB free) the system is slowing down very much.

Are you talking about storage space?
I have 2.98GB free right now, apparently.
..
Yes, storage space. There was already a thread some time ago where especially people who had bought the 8GB version noticed a massive slow down after they had installed some apps and the free memory went below 3GB(!) (I remembered wrong, it was not 1-2GB, but 3GB). The thread can be found here
use clean master to clean your cache and kill tasks.i do it constantly so my device runs speedy
Try to get more than 3GB of freespace then try lagfix(fstrim) free.
Has ran into this problem once. but after done booth solutions above now my N7 is running as smooth as Brand New again.
P.S. Before I've found Lagfix(FStrim) I'm use Forever Gone and it work just as well as Lagfix did. except Forever Gone is take much longer time than Lagfix to finish its job.

4.3 less smooth?

Am i the only one that has noticed some significant slowdowns in android 4.3 as opposed to 4.2.2? Even simple things like pulling down the notification bar or swiping between tabs in chrome have laggy animations now, which wasn't the case before.
Most will say it's just you. What ROM are you using?

Ive never had anything else but stock rom on this phone, never even rooted it.
I'm on stock rooted 4.3 and it's significantly smoother. Haven't even bothered flashing anything else because I'm so satisfied, plus I wanted to experience stock awhile so I know what is what.

Mine felt that way for a day but seemed to really smooth out after a few reboots and time I believe it might be the way the new OS deals with the phones data just needs a bit of time to smooth itself out.
The OTA update has made my phone nothing but faster which is great because this phone was never even close to being slow in the first place.
i've been using Slimbean 4.3 Build 1 Alpha and its really smooth, only a couple of known bugs. Faster than Weekly 7.8.

Yes, I have the exact same issue as you. Driving me nuts. I'm running the stock rom but Faux kernel. Unfortunately, I don't recall if I had this issue prior to the kernel change. Going to try to revert back to stock kernel. If that doesn't help I'm going to re-flash from scratch. I flashed the OTA...maybe something went wrong.
UPDATE: I flashed back to the stock kernel and all lag in the animations are gone. Everything is silky smooth. I had tried different CPU governors in faux kernel before going back to stock but they all had the same lag. Odd though, I've never had performance issues with faux before.

Swiping down the notification panel is too glitchy. And also when I take screenshot, it slows down and I am not able to see the SC's animation.
It is noticeably slow for me. Even home screen animations are slow.

Try a clean flash of stock 4.3 ROM (JWR66V) since a lot of the custom ROMs are in the early stages of development. Maybe refrain from flashing a custom kernel until you experience 100% stock for a bit.
Totally stock and mine seems to be performing better than it was.

It did seem a littly off to me. I did a factory reset after receiving it ota but I couldn't do stock. Seemed like the phone got hotter quicker and touch responsiveness was a little slow also IMO

Just done what you have listed above and the answer is no; its not slower, at least my stock install. I don't have bugs like the weird black bar when selecting recently used apps
. I'll continue to monitor but for now its fine.
I experienced the same less than smooth performance as well. It got a little better in smoothness and less bugging out over time, but it may just be me getting acquainted with it and being a placebo.
This was from a factory image flash, but I may give it a go again if it continues to be a problem. I doubt it'll fix it.
Just got a new Nexus 4 (white) and updated it to 4.3... Smooth as N4 has always been... Completely stock

Nexus 7 very laggy after 4.3

Hi all, my old nexus 7 tablet is totally unresponsive after updating to android 4.3. The problem can be recreated in every single browser you run. After several minutes of browsing the device begins to lag heavy to a point where performance is do degraded that even the return to home or multitask buttons are taking ages to respond. I am totally confused, a update with a trim function supposed to speed tings up is dousing massive problems. I have searched trough the forums in the web and many are reporting same problems.
Does any one here experience the same ?

Will make a reset and see how long will the tablet stay fast.
Unfortunately for me after root the tablet started lags. Reinstall it completely and now use it without root.
I m not experiencing nothing from lags. But somehow mediaserver drains my battery and I can t get more then 4 hours screen. Before had 6 or 7 hours youtube and browsing.

I'm having the very same problem. I've tried all sorts of things to fix this with no lasting results. Factory resets make no difference. Also having a load of problems with the Play store, but that's happening on all my devices at the moment so it's likely not related.

This happened to me a while ago. No matter how many times I factory restored it was still slow and choppy. SO I was really desperate I downloaded the OEM factory image and flashed it. Low and behold that fixed all the ridiculous lagginess I had and it has been good ever since.

I'm in the process of trying this and it seems to be working for the time being. That said, I have had good, early results before and within a day or so the lag is back. This is the first attempt at flashing 4.3 ( I updated to 4.3 through OTA before) so I'm hoping it has a better result. I even performed a factory reset after flashing just so I know all bases are covered. If the lag does return then I'm at a loss as to why. Just as well I'm away to get the new Nexus7.

Can't say I've noticed any detrimental effects on battery time for being on 4.3. If anything its better, if not just the same. Maybe it's still a bit early to tell one way or another, but all my woes seem to be gone. I'm not holding my breath though.
One thing I will say is that it doesn't half spoil a device if you have to spend more time troubleshooting, than actually using the thing.

Look at the thread. Only troubleshoting... lol. And I just gave my opinion... I m not a begginer and I know every piece of hardware behaves different. Thats what people are doing here. If you don t have nothing to complain you re lucky. Many of us are not the same opinion. Some for one reason others many... but one is sure. 4.3 its definitively not a major update and don t brings much over 4.2.2. They re slowing things with updates waiting for ios 7 is out to bring out klp. This will be a real and great update. For now they are throwing sand to your eyes...

I am on stock 4.3 now , stock as it can be. The lag is still present. I literally cannot brows, the browser is sooooo laggy and bugged, don't depend of the browser i am using. I don't know where the problem is , but this is strange behavior for sure. How come it be that only some are affected ? can it be something related with the TRIM option ?
My tablet was sent back to asus for a screen problem, after replacing they returned me the device flashed back to 4.2.2 and not the last 4.3 i had before ? Why is that , maybe the 4.3 does really have some problems here and there....
I also had the browser-produced lag. It was present no matter what ROM I used (Paranoid Android, SlimBean, CyanogenMod, Purity) and no matter what build (JWR66V, JSS15Q, even JWR66Y) I used. I made a strange decision, and downgraded to 4.1.2. Now I'm rather enjoying myself. I hope 4.3 will eventually work on my Nexus 7. Until then, back to the past.

Does the N10 still have its problems?

I've heard the device will do things like restart randomly, and have some other misc issues - is that fixed with later releases of it or is it still an issue?

My N10 suffers from random reboots and memory leaks every couple days. But after flashing a 4.3 rom those problems almost dissapear with the updated Mali drivers from Samsung
So right now its a no issue, at least for me
Had screen flicker, but went away with the kit kat update (fingers still crossed).
Only had one reboot and that was on 4.3.

I've been using mine for almost over a week. It came with 4.2.x and asked for update to 4.3 right after unpacking. Never had a single problem for a week with 4.3 and now using 4.4 which i manually updated. Still had no problems.
No problems here too..
The reason that you maybe find much 'complains' is because people with a problem are searching for a fix. But hou never hear a word from people without problems.. Well until now
I really love this tablet. Fast and oh te screen.

I've not had too many issues with my N10. I've mostly been running CM10.2 on it, but I've put KitKat on it now and it's purring like a happy cat.
Solid with 4.4 so far.
4.3 eliminated a number of the screen issues with the updated Mali drivers. Looks like they were updated further under 4.4 as the Google site shows new binaries for 4.4.
I'm running stock 4.4 and have 0 issues. Didn't with 4.3 either. Can't say for anything earlier, I'm newer to the device.
Still running 4.3 here, but mine reboots randomly a couple of times a week.
Waiting to see what 4.4 will do.

4.4 seems so far (over two days uptime with Chrome installed!) to have fixed the massive memory leaks on this device.. 4.3 never seemed to release memory correctly and SystemUI would bloat to 200MB and completely implode on itself. Now it seems memory is releasing fine, and SystemUI is fluctuating in memory usage like it should be now..
I was given an N10 for my bday back on Sept 30 and its gotten almost daily use. I can say with full confidence that I have experienced ZERO problems. No memory leaks (if its going on I cant tell...the performance is snappy as hell!) no light bleed and definitely no random reboots. I have thrown the most hardware intensive games at it and they all work better than I had hoped for. It does exactly what I want it to do when I want it to do it.
I've had it for about half a year and used daily and I've had one or two reboots during that time, quite long ago now, otherwise it's been perfectly smooth and had no issues.
The photo editor crashes while editing large images (probably runs out of memory), haven't tried it on 4.4. But that's really not a issue as I normally use Photoshop on my pc anyway.
So far I never had any other issues at all, no random reboots or anything else. 4.3 was running smoothly as is 4.4 which I have now. The only modifications I have made are rooting it so I can use certain apps, and I didn't even have to reroot after the 4.4 ota.
tldr: mine works like a charm.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
Mine suffers extremely bad with memory leaks and random reboots when I have Location Services on. If I turn Location off, it doesn't reboot but after 30 hours or so, it slows to a complete crawl and redraws the launcher every 2 seconds thus making me have to manually reboot it. It's usable and I still use it every day, but I'm definitely not ecstatic with it and I'll likely replace it as soon as another tablet running stock Android and with a beautiful screen comes along. Hopefully I'm not waiting too long.
I get a reboot on average every 3 days. Usually while in the browser.. Screen will just flash white and reboots.. Never slows down before had.. No sign of trouble either..
Sent from my Nexus 10
I haven't had any reboots from the browser yet, but I did get a hard freeze while using the HBO app yesterday. That's actually new, never saw it before the update so hopefully it's just a one time thing.

I'm having problems with any rom later than 4.2. The 4.3 roms cause random reboots, and 4.4 will not install.... Something about some E: error.
I've gotten into the habit of wiping for factory reset before every flash.....so I have no idea why the problem with flashing the 4.4 roms. :silly:

Nexus 7 running super slow.. Think a clean 5.0 may help?

Have had my n7 since they came out (32g WiFi) and love it.. Lately she's been running real slow. (Official cm11).. If I do a full FULL wipe and drop an official 5.0.0 image on it, think that will help get some performance back? I know the internal memory type is a big limitation, any way to format it and maybe clean or speed it up?
(I've done the usual, wrote and reflash, open space, stop apps at startup, speed up tricks...)
Thanks..

A full wipe would more than likely help right now. Although with 5.0 a few weeks away, its best to wait until then. You could flash the official 5.0 factory images once they're up, or someone's bound to make a stock rooted 5.0 ROM also.
If you can't wait you could try experimenting with the f2fs formatting, there's a how to thread and a good selection of compatible ROMs available. In haven't tried it personally but most users seem to notice significant improvements on their N7.
I would suggest to install a diagnostic app like diagnosis by darken and read a report of how apps eat your cpu/ram instead of going the process of backuping and formating.
From my experience apps which slow a device
Facebook
Viber
WhatsApp
And most of the messaging apps.
A clean install of any Android version would help. ?
I would suggest using a cleaning tool like SD Maid by Darken and formatting your Cache/Dalvik Cache.

I recommend the Facebook app below, its based on the browser version and it a hundred times lighter than the official app. Doesn't have access to the permissions (basically everything) that the official fb app has either which is better.

Sometimes it works...normally (my HTC is faster, but is not horribly slower) but then I looses it all and starts lagging so badly I put it down and dont use it for 2hours, and then it's okay again...

Yeah same thing here. What's crazy is I installed Friendcaster instead of the stock FB app and the same thing happened. Makes me think it's not the app and instead something with FB server side not liking LP.
Sent from my Dev Edition Moto X
Same problems here. I have hangups amounting to tens of seconds doing what used to be otherwise instantaneous actions when the tablet was new.
The question; is this performance degradation related to component aging or software-related? Our N7s are more or less out of 1yr warranty now and I am wondering whether there will be any traction with ASUS about a flaw which was present at purchase? Components crap out of the door outlasts a claim on fault developments in the wild.

2 things. A bloated system and cache will slow things down. And for me... My N7 seems slower every time I upgrade my phone. Lol
Wipe it clean and start again with fresh stock install. ?
Hardware doesn't slow down. It works, or doesn't work... Or can work intermittently if it's damaged. But not just slower.

Everyone in this thread is saying that 5.0 and 4.4.4 fresh install are slow for them, why is everyone saying do a fresh stock install?
I have a 2 day stock install and this works slower then my friends samsung ace.
p.s. i uninstalled fb, and messenger... still slow.

Then go to the last version that was fast? Or a good custom rom?
My point was and is... Hardware doesn't slow down. It may break or become erratic.. But not slower.
So the issue is on the software side. ?

I never liked kit Kat either on my N7...its still running stock, rooted 4.2.2. Smooth and snappy. ?
How does google even thing about putting out something that's so slow?
Are they desperately wanting us to switch to the nexus 9?
This is my last tablet I ever bought.
So anyone has 5.0.2 allready?
I have it. I see no difference. The tab freezes for about a minute sometimes when using chrome. Dolphin is even worse. So most of the time i get these freeze ups and the whole tablet becomes unresponsive.
Anyone else?
