FoxFi no longer needed? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been rooted for a while now under 4.3. I just updated to NC2 ( the leaked KitKat) and then flashed NC4 recovery and modem. I have been using both FoxFi and WiFi Tether (with root) because I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I started up FoxFi to test it, but as usual you have install a private cert and that requires you put in a lock screen PIN or password (pattern no longer an option).
So after testing FoxFi...it works fine, I deleted that cert and removed the PIN lock screen....back to just a swipe.
Well...trying FoxFi again, it wants to reinstall that key...this time I said NO and backed out.
Being someone who likes to tinker with crap....I tried just turning on the native hotspot app. IT WORKS FINE!
That's right...IT STILL WORKS without FoxFi loaded. I am not going to totally remove FoxFi (yet) but strongly suspect it is no longer needed.
Again....this is on rooted NC2 leak but with NC4 modem flashed.

That's because the leaked n2 already had the tethering provisions included.

You never know when you might need the Bluetooth tether. I kept mine for situations like this.

I am running the leaked NC2 rom that I installed using the instructions on this site. FoxFi does work, but only with the cert installed.
Also, just activating the mobile hotspot doesn't work for me. Still checks subscription status and fails.

You need to install Deoxed version of NC2

Ugh. Thanks. May just stick with Foxfi. With getting my phone replaced a couple weeks ago I've set this thing up so many times I don't want to do it again any time soon.

Some people have said that it is working, but I am quietly waiting for more confirmation before I update to MK2. I am getting ready to go on a trip to Vegas in a couple weeks and LTE is there.... free hotel wifi is not.
Check crawrj's original post in development. Fgr created one in post 337 I believe. Haven't heard from crawrj in awhile.

Help where is this FIX where can I get it im rooted and at MK2 but I need the file anyone have it PLEASE HELP
There IS a Hotspot mod that works (actually TWO! - One Odex one DeOdexed) in crawrj's thread. Last few pages I tested them and they worked for me too.
If you're stock rooted (and NOT on customized stock) choose the Odex version.
It's here search for it.

I believe off a stock MK2 Sprint issues a security update not too long after the first boot that might cancel that out if you install the hotspot after the update. I can't say for certain as I was wiping and loading a few times a month or two ago when I had this problem and the only thing I could think of was to install the hotspot mod before accepting this security update. been able to use the hotspot without any problems since...

Hi, i was finally able to get the wifi-hotspot, and call forwarding settings working. After trying a number of custom roms, i finally installed - omega v19 - XXUEML6. All the above settings, which were unavailable previously are now available and working normally. I suggest, this rom to any other user, who might be facing the same issue with the sprint sgs4 model.

Just for clarification purposes, what is the issue when it "doesn't work"? It is missing from the settings menu and when used in the quick launch toggle, it says "Tethering not supported?" I have that problem myself and I do believe it came after I accidentally let my phone receive an OTA update. I did NOT install the update, but accidentally left my phone on for an extended period of time on a stock software load. I had to ODIN-flash to stock ROOTED MF9 when my dog unplugged the USB cable while I was flashing NAE modem and the phone wouldn't boot afterward.
I can downgrade the modem to MF9/MJA/MK2 and use any ROM and any recovery to wipe and the option to tether is just gone. There's a SQLite program you can download (it costs 3 bucks) to get the option back in the settings, but on my phone it won't work after being forced back into the settings/toggle. it won't allow clients to acquire an IP address. I decided to go ahead and flash an unrooted stock MF9 and let it update to NAE hoping it was a problem that the newest firmware would resolve. It did this without a hitch but the option to tether never returned to the settings menu.
Can anybody confirm whether or not this is was intentional on Sprint/Samsung's part since I don't pay for tethering? I am trying to decide if I need to spend 100 dollars on another motherboard or not so it'd be real nice to know, but nobody wants to chime in. I created my own thread to address the issue, but nada.

Yes, you are right, It is missing from the settings menu and when used in the quick launch toggle, it says "Tethering not supported?". It is intentionally locked/ removed from sprint version of SGS4.
I tried all the roms meant for sprint model SPH-L720, but none of them worked.I had almost given up, but after flashing the Omega Rom "omega v19 - XXUEML6", which was meant for european version GT-I9505, all the settings started working normally.
This works for -
Android Version - 4.3,
Baseband Version - L720VPUEMK2,
Kernel Version - 3.4.83-KT-SG4-JB4.3-TW-SPR-03.19.2014-g743b3d0
Hardware Version - L720.08
I cannot say for sure whether the same will work for you, but you can try.

Thank you for the idea. i will try soon as I get home but now looks like I gotta re-root. Not sure if I can do it the old way w/ the MF9 1-click since my download mode screen now includes 4 extra lines of text and looks like this:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SPH-L720
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
CURRENT STATUS: Custom
KNOX KERNEL LOCK: 0x0
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0x0
CSB-CONFIG-LSB: 0x30
WRITE PROTECTION: Enable
eMMC BURST MODE: enabled
Before I allowed phone to update itself, I only had the top 4 lines. Anybody know what all of that garbage means? IDC about warranty b/c phone's a year and 2 months old.

It means any firmware older than NAE will not work on your phone using Odin to install it. You have the knox bootloader so there is no more going backwards with the stock tar files. You can still root, but I don't think that 1-click mf9 will work for you.

hotspot hack

Is there a hotspot hack for rooted mje? I rarely use unless cable goes down but it's nice to have a backup. I'll wait on rooting if there's no hotspot hack.
Or does wifi tether for root users work?

thanks for the reply now do I have to use a rom kinda wanted to stick with stock rom. Unless I don't have to use safe strap I never liked the idea of using up space on my device.

I'm not sure if it works on the stock ROM anymore. SafeStrap does not take up much space at all and Beans ROM is basically a pimped out version of the stock ROM with a bunch of additional features and less bloatware.

fwiw on MJ7 I have tried Android wifi tether and also that market hotspt toggle widget app (video), and neither of those seemed to work with rooted stock MJ7. But FoxFi works ($7.95 to avoid free version limitation), and so does "Tether Setting" (noboru)*. The latter is free, but only does WPA; but it requires far fewer Android Permissions than FoxFi.
Don't feel bad about being conservative. I've got rooted-stock-MJ7 in a secondary Safestrap slot and virginal (but rooted) MJ7 in the stock slot. For now, when I screw around with debloating or freezing, I only do that in a dev slot. Lame, right?
YMMV on MJE.
*for this one you might also need to use the trick where when the "you don't have a subscription for this" screen pops up, you just ignore it by using the Home key (rather than cancelling it).
.
I too would like to stick with the stock rom. I don't mind rooting, so is there an apk that I can install so I can tether?
Got my phone and tried Foxfi, and it works! I'm on MJE
I do miss Android Wifi Tether, just because it gave me a good idea of how much data I had used.
Has anyone had success using "WiFi Tether Router by Fabio Grasso" ?
This supposedly allows tethering also...

[Q] Hotspot Mod

Hi, I'm trying to get the native Hotspot working, but there's something weird going on. I'm able to turn it on without getting the sprint message, but my laptop doesn't seem to be able to connect to it. My laptop can see the wifi connection and everything but when trying to connect it just fails.
I flashed the correct odex Nae file. Also I'm on 4.4.2 rooted. Done this many times b4 with prior versions.
I used TWRP to install. I also tried the manual by adding to the framework. I have the menus setting Hotspot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I came here seeking the exact same info. Currently on 4.4.2 with foxfi working.
On a related note, anyone know how to disable the auto update feature and nag screen? This is an unrooted device.

I searched everywhere and there have been no reports of FoxFi not working after the most recent update.... hope that's a good sign. but I'm still too chicken to take the chance.
FoxFi was too much of a pain in the arse for me forcing the pin code to open the lockscreen.... None of the methods in these forums worked for me to go back to swipe to un-lock.
Just root it and install the Xposed framework and the XTether module to acivate wifi hotspot. Works like a champ. I was running safestrap with Alliance ROM but I loaded it into the rom slot instead of stock slot before realizing there were issues there.
I Odined back to stock NGC and rooted / Xposed. Figured I'll leave safestrap alone until he figures out the bugz.
I froze Security policy updates SPD_v2_1402_4_1 to get rid of security nag and SDM 1.0 to disable the VZW OTA notifications with TiBu. But of course, you need root and have to purchase TiBu key to freeze apps. Small price to pay if you are going to be doing a lot of custom work on your phone though.

I have always used a 4-digit PIN to unlock my phone, even prior to using FoxFi,
so it wasn't too much trouble for me.
When I had the Galaxy Note II rooted, all I did to block OTA update was renaming
SDM.apk to SDM.bak. (as well as FWUpgrade.apk to FWUpgrade.bak)
Is it different on the Galaxy S5?
Thanks!

Same. And you might want to freeze the security policy updater also.
I'm strongly considering rooting at this point. Looks pretty simple for this phone. This is the wife's phone, didn't want to hack it up like I do my Motorolas; but we've gone through some expense to keep the unlimited plans and inadvertently losing wifi tether (though frankly we don't use that much data) would suck.
It also appears that you can root after this update by downgrading, but to get this update after root you need Odin.
I'll give it a week and decide. Thanks for the help and ideas guys.
Foxfi works with update for me with swipe to unlock. Just connected my tablet.

Not to be the stereotypical new user who totally hijacks other's threads, but I bit the bullet and rooted the wife's S5 and did Chopstix' mods. I added a hotspot toggle widget so it's now a one-touch operation with no PIN required. XPosed is a really neat architecture. This is making me hate my unrootable Maxx.
Phone is rooted on the NE9 update. And Foxfi does indeed start on that update (which is still Android 4.2.2) but is now redundant.

Native thethering PD1

I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and installed a stock rooted PD1 ROM. I still have root, but I no longer have BT tethering (I am on an unlimited data plan). Is there a way for me to get it back?
BTW, thank you to those who made the threads that enabled me to get this far.
I am able to get tethering to work with Foxfi, which is not the end of the world considering how rarely I use it, but I still would rather be able to get the native feature to work.

Stupid question. Flash with odin, twrp, or flashfire?
It wouldn't work through TWRP, so I flashed with Flashfire. That worked and now the native tethering is functional. Thank you very much!
