Native thethering PD1 - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and installed a stock rooted PD1 ROM. I still have root, but I no longer have BT tethering (I am on an unlimited data plan). Is there a way for me to get it back?
BTW, thank you to those who made the threads that enabled me to get this far.

I am able to get tethering to work with Foxfi, which is not the end of the world considering how rarely I use it, but I still would rather be able to get the native feature to work.

Flash this and you will have tethering using stock hotspot, even better than bluetooth. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24572369242686524

Does this one work with PF4? have you ever seen how to make the edits for thetering for current roms?
I would just love to learn what edits are required so i can do it myself in future

Yes for both PD1 and PF4

Stupid question. Flash with odin, twrp, or flashfire?

It wouldn't work through TWRP, so I flashed with Flashfire. That worked and now the native tethering is functional. Thank you very much!

T-Mobile LTE

I am interested in enabling T-Mobile LTE on my N4. Does it work smoothly like any other LTE enabled phone? In my research, I've found that there are two different zip files to flash. Which one has worked best for people? It appears that enabling LTE is a simple flash of the zip file. Am I correct? Thanks.
This has been covered thousands of times. But before this thread gets deleted, let me help you out. LTE on tmobile or att works flawlessly.

im using the 98-33 radio on tmobile and have had 0 problems. you can find it here

just flash and forget it. it should work! good luck
Do I need to update the radios after every software update or can I just flash once and forget it?
Since this will get deleted anyways, I will ask the stupid question I have. Bone stock 4.4.2 soon to be rooted with TWRP. Can I flash with a stock ROM and still make a wifi hotspot? I see something about needing init.d support or something like that.

I flashed the file. However the instructions state to change the network mode. I don't even see that option in the settings. I'm currently on 4.3

hotspot hack

Is there a hotspot hack for rooted mje? I rarely use unless cable goes down but it's nice to have a backup. I'll wait on rooting if there's no hotspot hack.
Or does wifi tether for root users work?

Yes there is, any of the current available ROMs have an available WiFi hotspot that works without any issues.

thanks for the reply now do I have to use a rom kinda wanted to stick with stock rom. Unless I don't have to use safe strap I never liked the idea of using up space on my device.

I'm not sure if it works on the stock ROM anymore. SafeStrap does not take up much space at all and Beans ROM is basically a pimped out version of the stock ROM with a bunch of additional features and less bloatware.

fwiw on MJ7 I have tried Android wifi tether and also that market hotspt toggle widget app (video), and neither of those seemed to work with rooted stock MJ7. But FoxFi works ($7.95 to avoid free version limitation), and so does "Tether Setting" (noboru)*. The latter is free, but only does WPA; but it requires far fewer Android Permissions than FoxFi.
Don't feel bad about being conservative. I've got rooted-stock-MJ7 in a secondary Safestrap slot and virginal (but rooted) MJ7 in the stock slot. For now, when I screw around with debloating or freezing, I only do that in a dev slot. Lame, right?
YMMV on MJE.
*for this one you might also need to use the trick where when the "you don't have a subscription for this" screen pops up, you just ignore it by using the Home key (rather than cancelling it).
.
I too would like to stick with the stock rom. I don't mind rooting, so is there an apk that I can install so I can tether?
Got my phone and tried Foxfi, and it works! I'm on MJE
I do miss Android Wifi Tether, just because it gave me a good idea of how much data I had used.
Has anyone had success using "WiFi Tether Router by Fabio Grasso" ?
This supposedly allows tethering also...

FoxFi no longer needed?

I've been rooted for a while now under 4.3. I just updated to NC2 ( the leaked KitKat) and then flashed NC4 recovery and modem. I have been using both FoxFi and WiFi Tether (with root) because I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I started up FoxFi to test it, but as usual you have install a private cert and that requires you put in a lock screen PIN or password (pattern no longer an option).
So after testing FoxFi...it works fine, I deleted that cert and removed the PIN lock screen....back to just a swipe.
Well...trying FoxFi again, it wants to reinstall that key...this time I said NO and backed out.
Being someone who likes to tinker with crap....I tried just turning on the native hotspot app. IT WORKS FINE!
That's right...IT STILL WORKS without FoxFi loaded. I am not going to totally remove FoxFi (yet) but strongly suspect it is no longer needed.
Again....this is on rooted NC2 leak but with NC4 modem flashed.
Sent from my Note 3 via Tapatalk
That's because the leaked n2 already had the tethering provisions included.

You never know when you might need the Bluetooth tether. I kept mine for situations like this.

I am running the leaked NC2 rom that I installed using the instructions on this site. FoxFi does work, but only with the cert installed.
Also, just activating the mobile hotspot doesn't work for me. Still checks subscription status and fails.

ATT S5 Kernel eith Developer Options Enabled?

Have an S5 with no screen. I know the phone works, had a friend lend me their screen so I could show someone else it worked to sell (which didnt happen cause its locked to ATT). I havent enabled USB Debugging on it nor rooted it, though i know my way around Odin and dont need a screen for all that.
ANYWAY...are there any kernels based on stock TW that have USB Debugging enabled by default? Phones pretty powerful enough to be able to sideload and run BBQ Screen and use the device with some minor latency but i dont mind. Just wanna use my $250 shelf ornament til i can afford/find a screen

so i found a way to enable usb debugging using recovery, pulling and editing a file, replacing it and then supposedly can allow my pc to connect to adb on the device using adb keys...but its all hypothetical. whats worse is even if i do get it working by some miracle, id still have to figure a way to register the device to my Mobizen account...and then figure out how to even start the app from the phone and...ugh...
someone on stackexchange said they were able to do so with a galaxy s3 that had a busted touch, but my S5 has NO screen at all. worth a shot you think? or should i just figure out a way to make $100 quick...or worse, beg someone with a waterlogged device to let me have their screen?
heres a link to the method/madness to get their usb debugging active

They are an issue with an att s5, you can flash either of those with odin. If you can get a screen you should be good but otherwise unless you were already rooted I don't know of any way.

after my experiences using CM and AOSP, i really dont mind using stock TW after rooting, removing all the junk like launcher and carrier stuff. im pretty fluent in modifying the interactive gov for balancing performance and battery life. this things pretty beast anyway, so i dont anticipate much issue with gaming and stuff.
just for reference, towelroot DOES work with the latest update correct? and MM will be pushed at some point?

Any interest in an unrooted insanely debloated ROM?

The ENG kernel used for root is great in a sense that it has aided in giving us root access, but it is nowhere near as refined as the factory kernel. @psouza4 has done a TON to make this kernel awesome, but there are a lot of people who have reverted back to stock because of the limitations.
I'm considering making an insanely debloated ROM that will hopefully run on the factory PE1 kernel. Root access would be needed to do the initial install with FlashFire, but afterwards there would be no root access. This might be what a few of you guys are looking for, a blazing fast ROM that runs forever on a charge, without getting hot. Once the ROM is flashed, there will be NO ability to modify unless the ENG kernel is flashed and rooted again. This ROM would NOT be for anyone interested in running Xposed framework in anyway.
If there is enough interest, I'll start working on something FAST!
Definitely interested in this
Extremely interested.
Could you throw in a modified hosts file for ad blocking? Or, should I mod it first then unroot? Also, would bypassing the checks for tethering be an option before going back to original kernel?

I'm hoping to include some mods like this. I believe I'll be able to modify the host file, but you would not be able to update the hosts once the ROM is installed.

Great! I was thinking of trying something along this route. I will make a flashfire backup of internal first then could give it a go.
I'll keep you posted when I have something worthy of flashing.
Wont future updates just re-bloat the rom?

The ROM would prevent future updates, so all updates would be done via re-root and flash.

Yeah.. very interested then... as long as you keep theme store in it
Awesome
This is exactly what I was looking for! I'd be eternally grateful if you did it.
I would love to see something like this!
My question is, since I can always at least disable bloat, can I make some changes (provisioning for tethering, modified hosts file) then unroot and reflash stock kernel?
The only reason I wanted root is for viper4android/audio mods. Would an unrooted rom be able to include that?

That's an interesting question. Some optimizations like that could be added. But that app wouldn't work since it requires root privileges.

This will be great. An insanely debloated stock VZR 935U ROM with non-provisioned tethering, HD calling, and VVM is all that that's needed to make this the ultimate phone. Everything else that's need for full VZW functionality can be installed from the Play Store.
However, how would you go back to the stock kernel after installing this ROM? Just by flashing the stock AP in Odin?
I'd be stoked if this phone had stock mm status bar icons that's the only thing I've honestly really used root for and it still doesn't say LTE but instead the ugly 4G icon.. I'd even be alright with Verizons icon if it wasn't persistent on WiFi but then they're still ics looking signal bars. My s7 runs rather warm and battery drain rather sucks with the eng. Kernel starting to think it's not quite worth being able to themeish my status bar. I'd be interested in a debloated stock rom with HD calling if you can throw in the status bar that's icing on the cake.
Sorry for not checking the thread lately. I'm still trying to figure out how to make this work. I have some ideas, but nothing concrete yet.
This isn't going to work. DM-Verity checks will cause the phone not to boot once the original kernel is flashed back. If there is even a byte changed in the system partition it will make the hash invalid and cause the DM-Verity check to fail. The only debloating you can possibly do is simply disabling packages. (In the event of not wanting the Engineering kernel/root.)
