Hey All! First post here. I did try and search, but I need some help relatively quickly and could not find a solution. Verizon Galaxy S4, totally stock. Using TouchDown and Airwatch for Exchange support.
Issue:
Have work data on phone. Phone is encrypted with Android encryption.
Phone was dropped. Screen no longer works at all - does not turn on.
Need to wipe phone in order to return to insurance company.
Have sent a remote request to wipe, but cannot confirm if successful
Cannot boot past encryption key point, but cannot confirm anything given the broken screen.
Any thoughts on how I can perform a wipe so that I can return the phone? Thanks in advance!
Fixed!
I was able to wipe the phone! I followed the button commands described in the video below.
3 down volume button presses to select "wipe data / factory reset" followed by 7 on the NO and YES confirmation screen. My phone gave a tiny vibrate when it had finished, could not confirm via screen obviously, and then when I hit the power button, it rebooted (confirming that it had finished the operation and returned me to the home screen).
I hope this can help another lost soul in the future!
Edit: I apparently can't post links so I have broken it into two lines below. Just put it back together. :good:

Hello
I did the mistake today to encrypt the tablet with the option provided in the settings menu. After everything went fine and the tablet run for some hours, it force rebooted and now I can login to the tablet but there is a two step login (decryption and the unlock). While decryption works, unlock does not, there is no keyboard displayed and everything seems to "hang". Connection an USB keyboard did not help.
How to reset?
- Connect USB keyboard
- Press Power + (Vol -) while booting the device
- When you can select wipe data and cache, select it
In my case the option was not possible, then do the following:
- Get the update.acer.zip in the dev forum
- Put it an the external SD-Card
- Press Power + (Vol -) while booting the device
- System will be "updated"
- Root your device
- Install a system.img for your region
- Have fun again with the device
Greets
I encrypted the day I got mine (after rooting) and have had no problems. Obviously something went wrong for you, but I don't think you can make the generalization that encryption will fail. It's also possible something on your tablet interfered, or your internal sd is bad or something.
What does encrypting do?
My assumption is that if you encrypt it the government goons at the airports and border can't as easily poke around in it(or at all) if you don't "remember" the password.
Oh yea, and although they're less malevolent, criminals can't access your data if your device is stolen.
Such a broad over the top warning with no basis or facts that encrypting had anything to do with your problems. Don't make such statements unless you're 100% sure it was the encryption process. I encrypted my friends Acer with zero problems.
I changed the title and provided more information when someone has the same problem like me to solve it.
Don't know why my device was "broken", had nothing other installed and nothing changed. Anyway had no chance to retry it, device in the service while back camera cover was not holding in the case.
Thank you for correcting that and happy to see you're fine now.
Hi Guys,
I was having some problems with the phone functionality of my Desire Z, so following their advice, I performed a factory reset from the settings menu. Now when I boot up the phone, I get a 'Process system is not responding Force Close/Wait' message after the HTC boot logo. Choosing either option just leaves me with a blank screen. I've tried booting with/without the SIM and SD card but with the same result and I've tried another reset from the 'three android' menu. I haven't rooted my device or even applied the 1.72 update - everything is as I received it from HTC.
HTC say I need to send it off for repair. Is there anything I can do to fix it myself (without voiding my warranty)? - I'd rather not send it away for two weeks. It feels like it's just a software issue, so I should be able to do anything a repair tech can, given the right tools.
Thanks for your help.
I'd suggest trying another factory reset as maybe something went wrong on the first attempt, if not then the problem could be due to a hardware related issue in which case the phone would have to be sent of to HTC for repair.
Hold vol up and the powerbutton to get into the hoot menu. Use the vol up & down keys to select the factory reset/data wipe option. Then press power to confirm

Okay, I finally had time to update my A500 to ICS I was at 3.1 and was rooted. I went through several updates to get to ICS. 3.2, 3.2.1, a small patch, then 4.0.3. After the update finished, saying it was successful, my tab will reboot itself no longer than 30 seconds after it gets to the lock screen I don't have time to uninstall any apps that might be interfering with startup, not that i could tell whats doing it, and i don't have time to do the factory reset through the system menus Not sure why but the recovery (power&vol boot) only displays a red triangle over a dead droid so, guess my actual question is, how could i go about correcting this issue? I have ADB if needed, but I don't know were to start. any help would be appreciated. THANKS.
[Edit]
Okay, so I managed to turn off the wifi on my tab and it seems to stop restarting. When I do turn on the wifi, several apps give an error that they have stopped. after the second one pops up the tab then restarts unless the wifi is shut off. Any ideas as to what this may be would be appreciated.
Hi, sorry to say that i have the exact same problem.
Updated today from 3.2 to 4.0.3 and after first boot started the reboot sequence that only stopped after I managed to switch off the wifi...
I investigated a little but it seems this is quite an isolated issue... and all ways are leading to the factory reset...

Here's on direct from Acer Support:
(of course us old dogs already know this trick)
Note: Clean boot will erase all the data/information which is saved on your tablet. Recommend you to back up the data before performing a clean boot. (yeah, like you can get in there to save it
1. Shutdown the power (press the power button for long time to shutdown).
2. Press and hold volume up key (the key next to rotation lock) until you finish step 4.
3. Press power button for 3 seconds until you feel device vibrates then release power button.
4. Once you feel device vibrates, very quick to switch on/off "rotation key" many times (this activity has to be done very fast, otherwise it will not success). To ensure you success, switch on/off rotation key when Acer logo appears on screen.
5. Wait for a while (you will see Erase Userdata and Erase Cache on top-left corner on screen), device will reboot and start from OOBE screen.
Managed to get it to work. Appreciate the help. Runs like a champ now.

My son's Galaxy S4 has recently quit working and the following is what shows up on his screen along with a little robot icon with an open door that say's "No Command" under it.
Android system recovery<3e>
KTU84P.I337UCUFNJ4
Volume up/down to move highlight;
power button to select.
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
My son say's he has tried each of these items and has had no luck. At the bottom of the screen is the following message,
# Manual Mode #
--Appling Multi-CSC...
Applied the CSC-code : ATT
Successfully applied multi-CSC
Neither of us are tech types and are stumped by this. Please give some detailed directions to help a Grandpa help his son.
Use the volume up and down keys and scroll down to data factory reset and use the power button to select it then after it completes scroll down to wipe cache partition and use power key to select it after its done scroll up to reboot phone and use power key to select phone should restart and power on good luck
Well I followed the steps provided and it is just the same as when I started.
I tried it 3 times without luck.
Anyone know what else I might try?
If you can get the phone into download mode, hold volume down, home and power at the same time. You can use odin to flash the NB1 tar file in the AP slot on the new version of odin, PDA in older ones. You'll need the drivers for the phone which can be found on samsungs website. Info on how to do all that can be found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/guide-odin-to-stock-updating-rooting-t2926642 Hope you can get it working again.
Thank you for the help, I am attempting to follow your instructions now. Just have a question that may sound really dumb.
Do I need to have a simcard in the phone to do this?
This type of Tech is not my area so I really dont know.
I never tried it without a sim card but it should still work. After odin installs the new firmware, it will reboot the phone and you'll set it up just like it was new. Just make sure to follow the instructions in the thread I linked to.
No Joy......
After trying multiple times in the last few hours I still have the same screen. I downloaded the latest drivers to my pc, downloaded and installed Odin on my pc. Changed usb cables and ports and still the same screen.
It wont boot up, I cant get it to download mode, I cant get it to do anything. I think this thing is a "brick" now.
Thanks for the help folks, I appreciate it.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.
That sucks you couldn't get it to work. You can take it to a samsung service center if you have a best buy near you That has one. Maybe they can get it to work. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you to.
so guys,
my S5 screen just went black from one moment to the other, the touch lights still go on but that's it. i still can take screenshots and get messages so it's still functional.
first time for me here since my coworker hinted me of this site. so not used to working with tech etc.
thank you!!
Does it work when you first power on the phone or enter download mode (Volume Down & Home & Power) from a powered off state ?
If not, sounds like a hardware issue
If it does, try booting into recovery (Vol up & Home & Power) and clear caches, then reboot, if that doesn't work, factory reset and try
If it still fails, flash a stock ROM from sammobile .com with ODIN
unfortunately it does not, can i get it fixed in another way?
You can use this

To see your screen on a PC, but not easy to know what's wrong over the net, if it just suddenly happened, and you get no image at any point of the boot process, then something hardware has failed
Unlikely to be a lose connection if it just suddenly happened without any drop or knock
