[Q] Hardware issue, please give me your two cents - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was being a stupid ass and disconnected the LCD cable from the motherboard before turn off the system. Now the screen doesn't turn on.
Here's what I know for sure:
1. The system turns on, I can hear the processor working.
2. Before I completely lost the ability to have it show anything on screen, I tested two different screens and they both displayed something, albeit in weird colors (showed the correct color if I kinda yanked on the cable), so the screen is not the issue.
Here's my question, where do you guys think the problem lies? The cable? Or the connection socket on the motherboard?
Any answer is greatly appreciated.

If you are able to test multiple screens and ribbons with no effect then I would say your problem is the motherboard connection

I haven't test it with another cable, it's in the mail though. I really hope it's just the cable, cause I just got the replacement screen

It sounds like it will be the ribbon then they are very fragile it would be unusual to damage the motherboard connection

the cable just arrived. I am very relieved to say that my stupidity only damaged the cable.

Random screen behavior while charging

It's probably easier to show what's happening with a video:
This happens when charging my phone. But only when placed on a hard surface.
Also when the phone is resting on a surface, it doesn't respond to my touch input.
It acts as if there is an invisible hand touching the screen in random places very rapidly.
I hope this isn't a defective screen, because I'm sure this isn't normal behavior.
My problem is almost exactly the same as this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846941, but the explanation doesn't fit in my case, as it's very hot here (high 30's C), with almost 100% humidity, and the phone isn't the same as mine.
Has anyone had a problem like this with the DHD?
On a side note, does anyone else think of "Dial Home Device" from Stargate when they see DHD, or is it just me?
Mine started doing this a while ago. Also only when charging, and only on a hard surface. Bit annoying, but I can get round is easily. Would be interesting to know what causes it though...

Mine does this when I'm using a cheap ebay charging cable. It's ok when using a genuine HTC cable.

Just tested mine again, and it seems ok. Very weird. Was using the same cable too (HTC one). Maybe it bugs out sometimes when it's next to my PC. Seems ok right now.

Anyone confirm this?
I've just bought 2 cables (cheap, retractable) from ebay for emergency use... :'(
Seen demo/display phone acting like that in best buy although phone wasn't flat but on sort of a stand and always on charge...

It has been discussed and confirmed earlier. It happens with cheap non-genuine chargers.
The solution is to use only the genuine charger.
I should add I do have a cheap charger and data cable from ebay that do work ok, so this problem is not universal across all non-HTC accessories.

Lol!
I only use genuine charger and battery no matter what but I hope the cheap cable would not cause this. It's just a cable anyway...
By the way, can you provide the link for the said discussion for my joy reading?
Thanks!
I had this the other day I was holding the phone and had it plug in the HTC charger. I was browsing the web and could not move up and down it just zoomed in or out like I had two fingers on-screen I restarted the phone but still did it I then unplugged it and it was ok.

Just some extra details here, the charger I was using in the video was a generic usb charger, but using the genuine charger doesn't stop the problem.
The screen is in perfect condition, not a single scratch, phone is less than two months old and I only have a genuine cable.
Also this happens on ANY hard surface, a book, tiles, wood, but soft things like wool or upholstery don't cause any problems.

Sounds like a proximity sensor issue.
I had this exact same problem as shown on the video on both the HD2 I had previously and the DHD. In both cases the culprit was not the cable but a cheap charger.
What the...never seen s.th. like this before...

Same **** here ;-(
Happens when using a eBay noname docking station! Phone is not laying on a surface! The last time i charged with this docking station there was no problem.
I will try the htc charger...
Slightly off topic but whilst my DHD is charging, if I run my fingers across the aluminum body it feels like its vibrating. I had this on my Hero too.
I'm almost positive its the current, as unplugging it stops the "vibration".
the erratic behavior of the DHD is caused by improper grounding, as the small current from the ungrounded charger is passed on to the phone's body, mostly by a other then HTC cable, there will be a current on the phone, small, but none the less there, as the digitizer measures the electric resistance against the screen on spots, as a human finger(flesh somewhat differs from nothing or non organic objects touching it) it measures a touch, this small current also can give a false touch, thus creating this erratic behavior.
hope this explains it clearly to you all.
so, if you properly ground the phone somehow, it will stop

[Q] Changed flex cable for ear speaker..phone wont boot now

my ear speaker went out.. i ordered a new flex cable and replaced it.. checked all the connections 4 times took it apart put it back together.. when i press power.. green light comes on for 2-3 secs then nothing.. help.. im willing to send my atrix to someone to fix?.. give me some ideas please??
The first thought I had was your battery is dead.

Nope fully charged it and complete backup before I even opened the phone...idk what the deal is..I know the screen don't even try to turn on I only changed the ear speaker flex cable

Please check all your connections, especially the ribbon cable that has a jaw connector. This one is often the problem on this phone.
I've checked triple checked all the connections...when I press power it lights up green but no screen and I really can't tell if the phone is booting..phone worked perfect until I changed the flex cable out and nothing looks damaged..

Assuming that the entire device itself is off and that it's not just the screen, and that all the connectors are securely in place and not torn, the only thought that I can come up with is that this may be an ESD (electro-static discharge) issue.
Anyway to test that theory? Like test if the phone it self is still alive without screen coming on..the motherboard heats up a little like it's on but as far as I can tell none of cables are ripped

Connect the device to your computer with a data cable and see if it shows up as a device of some sort.
Of course if I was in that situation, I'd try other things too, like connecting the device to the charger with the battery removed, and see if it responds. I'd also try to get into recovery mode if possible. It's not likely to do anything different, but it's a better option than taking it apart again. However, I think it's either a damaged cable or an ESD issue.

Not Charging, USB Port Has Burning Smell

I was charging my N4 by USB, plugging it into my wall outlet. It had already risen for 3% to 11% when suddenly, it stopped charging. I tried to plug and replug everything and used a different outlet, but I got no positive results. Then, I found that if I bent up the USB cable, the phone would start charging. Eventually, this became an infeasible solution, and now, my N4 has completely shut off. Upon further inspection, the USB port smells like something burning. What's going on? I'm not sure if this is caused by a faulty port of if there was some water damage. Some water flailed on the top of the phone lightly earlier but I'm not sure if some dripped into the port. Earlier today, I was having issues with the connection to charge but a simple unplug and replug fixed everything.
I'm not sure if all these events are coincidences or if one of them is the reason behind why it isn't charging now. Why does the port smell like it's burning? How do I get it to charge again?
EDIT: Not sure if it's the port or the cable that burned out.
EDIT 2: I just go a single red flash. What does this mean!?!?!?

setting aside the burning smell or water that dripped on the phone, have you tried other cable? i also experienced the same issue in charging. it turns out, the cable that came with the box was already faulty, after 4-5 months.
also double check if the usb port is really burned or something. might as well send it to a service center, either in warranty or not, just to be safe

Works with other devices so yes, it's probably the port. Not sure how either, but is there anything I can do?

[Q] S4 is not charging

Hello guys
My galaxy S4 is not charging :crying:, I checked the charger and it worked on another phone, So I think the wrong is in the phone.
Oh, and sometimes it charges but after 10 or 15 minutes charging it starts to connect and disconnect continuously from the charger.
What is the solution?
Edit: The wall charger.

Car charger or wall charger? I noticed my car charger does not plug into the phone as snug as the wall charger & have similar issues you described. However, wall charger works flawlessly.

Perhaps go to At&t store & see if you have the same problem with a charger there. If so, then it could be a hardware defect which I presume is covered by warranty.

Anything is possible but always start simple. Most likely it is the charger, start there. If you try different multiple chargers and get the same results, BINGO there's your problem. Warranty replace phone, (you're already at the At&t store) you're Golden.

Yes you may be connected, but perhaps the pins are damaged, missing, dirty or don't line up to the phone port properly to charge the phone. Start with the charger first. Save yourself a lot of time & guessing.
Any other help?
Mine did the same thing. So I went down and did the next thing and got the note 3 for the taxes and monthly payments. I also ordered the USB motherboard off eBay since I've takin one apart before. Going to replace that so it will be fixed and on eBay it goes. The phones in mint condition but have to charge and swap batteries. I couldn't handle it. Believe it or not, what started it was I had charger plugged into phone and unplugged charger from wall and took phone into another room and plugged into another plug without ever unplugging from phone. When I plugged it in wall it had a small little arc and that was the last time it charged.

There really is no other help. You gotta figure out if its your charge port or the charger.
If u can't replace with warranty there is 2 other options.
1. Buy the s4 wireless charge kit. Its like 80 bucks on eBay.
2. Get a universal battery charger and 2 spare batteries. And just swap batteries everyday.
3. Buy the charging port on Amazon or eBay and pay a electronic store to swap it out. Or do it yourself if u can handle it
Fixed mine today. Took maybe 15 min. And $7.00. To eBay it goes.
Simple as pie, just use ifixit to do it.

I am in the same situation and have just ordered the parts. I did a sample teardown and it appears to be pretty simple to do it. I'll report back in a few days, but my USB is for sure dead as it won't read either on a PC or Mac, or charge via a car, wall, or USB cable in a computer. I bought the Samsung S4 battery charger and kit, and the old battery works in there, so I know it's not the battery. However, the battery's "water damage" sensor is now pink, so I presume that the nasty humidity in North Texas this spring has killed the USB board. At any rate, hopefully, the fix is en route.

Well, the part and tools arrived and it was an easy replacement. The phone now charges like original. However, and this is a much larger issue, I cannot get and mobile data or any sort of non-wifi connectivity. I am thinking this board, which supposedly contains the antenna, is defective. It appears I can have EITHER network connectivity or sound, but not both. When I put the small plastic cover that also contains the speaker back on, it instantly kills my GSM connection to AT&T. With it off, I am getting a solid 4G LTE connection, and with it on, no signal at all other than wifi.
I've searched here and on the web, and the only thing I see so far is sending back the new USB board and hoping that the next one works in all areas.
Anyone have any ideas?

Double check the antenna cable connections at both ends. If you still have problems, try installing your old board back and see if data/wifi works. If it does, then the new board is probably defective.

The new board was defective, but they sent a replacement that worked better than the original. I also ended up finding out that the 1st replacement board had shorted the antenna cable, so I replaced that. My my son is now using the S4 with no problems. Long story short, he left his S3 on my car and it got destroyed, so I got an S5 and he got the S4...
All in all, to get back on track, this was an easy repair for anyone. I was surprised at how easy replacing just about anything other than the screen itself would be.

[Q] Replaced USB Part - Now Back Button and Menu Dont Work/Light

Hey guys. A few weeks go my USB port died and would not charge. I eventually replaced it with this part.
http://www.witrigs.com/oem-charging-port-flex-cable-replacement-parts-for-samsung-galaxy-s4-sph-l720
The USB port is working now, but the menu button and back button are now not working. They do not light up or respond in anyway. I opened the phone back up to double check my work and I cant see anything that isnt installed properly. Anyone run into this? Does anyone know which part controls / powers those two buttons?

No, i removed the back cover; the one secured with 8 screws. Maybe its possible i separated the screen from the bezel accidentally and caused some kind of disconnection? Thank you very much for your response.

Yea i'll look into that. I was not as careful as i could have been when working with the parts that should be glued back. I kind of had the attitude of "well everything fits back in the case, time to screw it back together" i'll reinvestigate those areas. Thanks!!!
You changed charge port? If so then it's possible that the port and flex cable are bad. the home/menu buttons are on a flex the connects to the charge port flex cable. either its not connected or the charge port flex is faulty.
