Nexus 4 laggy - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have about 100 apps installed in total, and 2.5GB free out of the 12-13GB availible. About one week ago, the phone started to lag in Fifa14 and other apps. It even gave me about 10 bug reports! Why? Responds are highly appreciated!

your apps are the reason, was the phone slow prior installing 100 apps?, how many are running in the background and how much ram is avaliable?, you need to make sure they are not running when playing fifa.
backup your apps/data and remove them and see if it helps,

Are you rooted? If you are, I would say download greenify and greenify apps to save RAM and hopefully make your phone faster.

Between this I've a total of 414 apps in my nXs4 and in my Purity and stock kernel, everythings breeze. It takes some time to boot yet works fine for me.

Why does this thing lock up all the time?

This device is blazing fast most of the time, but it will inexplicably lock up, completely, for a few minutes at a time for seemingly no reason. Right now it's frozen on a youtube video and I can't turn it off or use the screen. The device is also unusable really when installing apps, and will lag heavily in Google Now sometimes.
Is this just me? Or 4.2.1?
Just you. My N7 is still operating at warp speed and doesn't lock up..

Are you stock? If so I heard people saying turning off the sync for currents will help, for Google now lag I feel its performs better if you turn off the hot word in setting. But with that you can't say Google and start voice search

I'm stock 4.2.1 and don't have those issues. I do have currents (and various other apps) disabled, so like previous response said try that. Otherwise maybe go with a factory reset.
When my gnex updated to 4.2 it's performance suffered until I factory reset, now it's been much better.

My best guess would be you have installed an app that is not compatible with 4.2.
How about posting a list of what you have installed, if you use multi-user, and if you are stock (not rooted), and we can give comments.
I agree. I'm running PA and rock solid. I was also rock solid on stock.
I've never had it lock up. I flashed a Trinity kernel once that caused sleep of death... but it was a known issue.

I have currents disabled. Which others do you have disabled?

I have a pretty decent amount of apps installed. I'll post them in a minute, but no, I'm not multi-user, and I'm stock. I'll root and put a new rom on this thing if it's worth it, I figured it'd be fine the way it came.
btw, here are my androbench results. Are these slow?

thanks, I'll try disabling those.
Over 100 apps in total, my andronbench write speed is clearly an error so just compare read and app open macros.
My apps open much faster than yours, which I'd put down to PA ROM and kernel. Maybe your write speed is a bit slow?
Can you download "forever gone" from market and try a full fill and delete? Apparently helps reset the memory controller to improve performance.

I did forever gone earlier today.
bump.
I just want to know if I should restore, root and flash a new rom on this thing. Can someone check out my androbench scores and tell me if they're normal?

GTalk and battery?

Curious, does GTalk consume a lot of RAM and does it have a great deal on battery? I want to leave it on so my daughter can IM me with her tablet when she's at her mom's. And great that it has video.. Haven't used gtalk in a long time. Thank you. I don't see it running in the battery history though... :/
Sent from my Nexus 4
I've used it on android for years and never felt like it had an adverse effect on battery life. Go for it.

What about ram? I know we have a lot on this phone but still want to know.. It runs in the background right?
Sent from my Nexus 4
Na, it doesn't take up much RAM. And yea, it does run in the background but it goes into Push mode after a while
No

Gtalk is very good on battery. Until you do a video call.

Ok, thanks guys.
Personally, I freeze Google Talk using titanium backup (you can disable it natively in apps on settings menu) because I don't use it. But since you have a usage for it, I don't think it uses a lot of ram. You have more than enough RAM so i wouldn't worry about it.
One thing definitely to do is to disable Google Latitude if you haven't already (it's in Maps and is on by default to report your location automatically). If they helped, press the thanks button
I dont use several Google services, and I freeze them without any problems.. Since sometimes they drain battery

[Q] why is my razr m brutally slow?

hi guys ive had my razr m for a while. absolutely love it but ive been having issues with it recently. i am currently on the BDH rom and have been for quite some time. i have some tweaks in place with pimp my rom also using apex launcher with barely anything on the homescreen. i have 548mb for apps, 6.15mb for pictures/videos, 20.00kb audio (but 16gb for sd music), 7.45mb for downloads and it says 1.21 gb available. battery used to be good but now i get 11 hours with BARELY any usage after a day of work. softkeys constantly lag when trying to go back on a page on the internet or anything of that nature...same with the home button softkey. keyboard is extremely laggy (using aosp) even just turning the screen on and off is extremely laggy. pretty much what im saying is everything i do is laggy even clicking apps. i constantly find myself using ram booster and cachemate every freaking 20 minutes and that makes it better for maybe 5 or 10 minutes then its back to the lag... any suggestions for improvement guys? appreciate the help.
Maybe an app running in the background hogging all of your RAM. Also do you have bdh in a ROM slot? I found that charging it over on the stock side helps with battery issues. After all stock slot is ultimately best.

I have it in ROM slot but its never gave me trouble before hmm.. maybe I'll give that a try

Having only 1.2gb of free space might be the problem or at least be part of the problem. I remember having slow down issues on my nexus 7 when my storage was near full. So I would try freeing up some space on your internal storage to see if that helps.
Have you tried clearing cache?
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
Yes I have jco I said I use cache mate and thanks legend I just ended up freezing and deleting a bunch more stuff and threw on some more tweaks with pimp my ROM and its been good so far knock on wood

Mem leak in 4.3 ?

Is memory leak problem solved in android 4.3?
Sent from my Nexus 4
Which memory leak?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
is there an issue? no problem here. are you sure that its not just one of your apps? a badly written app could potentially "leak" memory.
Ram used to take 1gb of memory... N I used to reboot to clear it off
Sent from my Nexus 4
I have not experienced it on 4.2.2 or 4.3, though I run stock.

i have never had ram take 1gb. i usually have between 1250-1550 free. right now i have 1327mb free ram. seems like you might need to take some time to take control of your apps. if you have root, greenify(app) will help, autostarts works well too. if you dont control your apps, they start controlling you and your device. personally, id rather be the one thats in control
I now have 0.94 GB RAM free but what does it matter? You have 2 gigs of RAM and its still running buttery smooth.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The N4 never had a memory leak. Don't worry about how much free ram you have, free ram is wasted ram and using it uses no extra power

Major RAM issues! Please help

So this has been really pissing me off lately... Both "android.process.acore" and "Contacts Storage" have each been taking up over 250mb or RAM all the time, resulting in heavy lag and very fast battery drain. Please help!

I highly doubt this use up enough ram to slow your device down, I mean we have 2gbs and I almost always have over 1 gb free. Also there's no way having them in the ram uses any more battery as ram uses the same amount of power whether it's full or empty.

Isn't it just a ROM-related derp that it displays the RAM usage incorrectly?

When this problem occurs, I'm down to about 500mb of usable RAM, which is basically unusable.
