I have a brand new Note and it was lagging horribly, especially ezpdf was lagging and kept crashing. I factory reset my device though and now everything is great.

Mine is leggy compared to my n3, but not sure I want to factory reset and reinstall all my stuff.
I did that initially when I got this tablet but I didn't get the result that you're getting

How long have you been working in ezPDF since you reset it? I'm tempted to do this as well, but backing up, reinstalling and reorganizing all my stuff would be time consuming. I'd hate to go through this only to find that EZPDF is still crashing and slow.

Is your Note rooted? You can use Titanium and do a full backup, and do a batch restore when you're back up.

No, I'm ascared to root my Note. I depend on it too much to take any risks and I don't really have the time to look into rooting right now. It is something I'm curious about though.
Rooting isn't a major thing. Changing the ROM is a different story. Nothing to be scared of when it comes to rooting.

The apparent key is to factory reset after the updates. Not had this issue with any previous Android device, so could be a poor firmware design issue by the 2014 Samsung dev team.
If I buy one in the next few weeks, I will update to the current firmware, FR and THEN put my apps on. I will probably avoid updates after that.... :silly:

Exactly correct. First do the ota update, then reset. Then disable all that Samsung nonsense.

Well I'll be damned!
I never reset everything after the 2 updates.
Bit the bullet and restarted from scratch and the note is much smoother now!

See though, that's one of the reasons many of us bought this tablet, we want those features and S Pen integration. What we need is way to make those work better, not eliminate them.

I haven't heard of anyone having any issues with root on this tablet, the only way I could see issues cropping up is by flashing a custom ROM.
I was wondering if there is a way other than either disabling or freezing system apps. If I remove them, it causes settings to fc. This has held true since the 4.4 update. I usually always get ride of apps to free up more space, RAM, ect...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
As I know you can only disable system apps(as I do) but they are still there and without root you can not completely delete or modify system apps, which is basicly leaves you with a custom rom.
If it's force closing when you disable them then the best thing you can do is just install a custom Rom and kernel. If you like stock then I suggest Nexus 5 Experience with Franco kernel.
I use an app called systemapp remover. In 4.3, maybe theres an update.

You can use any file explorer(Solid File Explorer) to uninstall system apps. Titanium Backup to freeze them.
Hey guys sorry for not responding sooner. The problem is that I am rooted and running a custom ROM. There are still certain thing I get ride of (NFC, or calendar storage for example) that I just never use. I've tried on stock, PSX, and Purity with the same results. Remember I'm uninstalling them not freezing or disabling.

Try uninstaling foreign keyboards , wallpapers e.t.c. Also I have 100mb+ of system space free so I guess your phone is similar so why do you need more. I can understand deleting system apps to get more free ram and space on cheap budget phone's with little of both. The likelihood of you needing to free up either on this phone is slim at best my guess never. Just my thoughts as I am interested in why your doing this.

Honestly, I just always have. I have about the same free space as you. I just like having the option of taking the things off of my phone that I don't want on there. What if I did want bone stock, I would be stuck with all that bloat wear. I just always considered it as one of the reasons for rooting your phone.

I know where you're coming from as its something I have always done until getting this phone. Don't no what the problem is as all apps I uninstall have been o.k. I always freeze first to make sure there's no surprises then uninstall. You could try greenify from play and put them to sleep if having problems. That said I have no answer to you're specific problem.
Just keep them if its causing problems and enjoy you're phone knowing it can handle the extra unwanted apps.
You could always flash a vanilla android rom ( there's a few about ) with banks minimum gapps and that should do the trick. Just install the apps you need
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah, I'm running Purity with the very minimal banks gapps and the system apps I don't use disabled. It doesn't really bother me. I had asked the same question when 4.4 was first released and I guess figured there was a work around by now. No biggy. Thanks for your incite:thumbup:

I love my motox but one of the features I miss about my S3/Note2 was the gallery feature where you could create folders and move pics around within the gallery app. It was so convenient!
Sent from my XT1058 using xda app-developers app
check out a different gallery app like quick pic!
Or a file manager like ES File Explorer
Parker, I know but I don't like downloading apps for existing functionally I find it redundant.
This should be functionality built into android
Solutions, I have been using a filer Explorer but it's cumbersome. Samsung's solution was so elegant

That's kind of the point of Android in general and Moto X in particular. It doesn't have all the extra crap that bloats the Samsung devices. If you want a feature, download an app. Simple.

All that bloat on touchwiz and others like it....is used by some, but just bloat to others. I much prefer adding the apps I want....versus having to debloat all the stuff I don't want. ?
Thats just me.

IMO, that type of functionality should be in the stock gallery app...
Let me add.....if you aren't rooted....bloat can be a nightmare. At least on a vanilla android system....there's very little to debloat, so not having root isn't as dire. ?

I would argue that if you want to create directories and move files around, a file manager is the tool of choice, just as it is on a pc. Putting that functionality into every app that accesses files is redundant and unnecessary.
Yea that's always been kind of weird that you can't do that. I recently started using Dropbox to save all my photos which is nice. You can create folders on there to keep them organized! Also, you'll get extra space (500Mb) to store photos once you activate the auto-upload thing.
The WORST thing is picture messages from iPhone users. They all come to me in the STUPID slideshow format that sucks. You can't even zoom in on the pictures and I've noticed in particular with the Moto X that the play/pause buttons disappear. So now I have to wait the 15-20 seconds for the next slide to look at the pic. Does anyone know how to get rid of this? Other than the obvious of installing a different SMS/MMS app or using Hangouts? I prefer the stock application and this is the only gripe I have with it.

problem is, your thinking like a software engineer, not an end user I want to be able to move my pictures around from where I look at them, not have to go into some other app, do it there and then go back and check it all out from the gallery app.

What I do is long press on those messages and say Save Attachments. That way they just go to your downloads folder and you can view them at full size and at your leisure.

I am thinking like a computer user, who has used Finder (Mac), Explorer (Win), and File Browser (Linux) to manipulate files, and prefer one interface for it.
For me, the most compelling reason for Android IS user access to the file system. If you want all file management from within the apps that access those files, you're a prime candidate for iOS.
Not trying to be snarky about this, I simply prefer to use file management tools for file management, rather than seeing numerous interfaces from numerous apps, and the additional overhead they require.
This app helps, still not as elegant as the touchwiz version but it's OK

I was going to get the gs5 today but driving home from a place I didn't know saying "OK Google, navigate me home." Made me think twice about getting it. I use these features way too often to not have it on a device anymore. Sure I could of looked it up but that takes me waking and unlocking the phone then putting the address in, which I know it seems that I'm being lazy but these features help out a lot!

It may be built into Android in the future if users want it, but for the most part, core Android apps provide basic functionality. Manufacturers build on AOSP with their own software tweaks or go closed source with a specific software suite (most of Samsung's S-apps are redundant when Google offers the same apps).
This is kind of analogous to editing with MS Paint or Adobe Photoshop. You can do it in both, but one obviously has more features.

On the GS5, you'd just go into Google Now and say the same thing. It's definitely more convenient with Touchless Control though.

Could someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction. I've searched but can't seem to find the basic info. I have very little background in flashing and such.
I rooted my thunderbolt years ago with little guidance and than bought a rooted bionic. But now I'm lost with all the terms. Looking for somewhere that will explain what everything means so I can then choose what os to flash, and how to do it in recovery.
Thank you,

Right now there isn't a whole lot you can do until the devs port custom roms to our phone. They didn't know it was going to be possible to unlock our bootloader or root(after kitkat update) , and therefore didn't put much effort into later versions. At most, you can install the latest CWM and backup your current rom in preparation for if you decide to install custom roms. That's basically where I am right now.

You can freeze or remove the bloatware. Just make a backup first.

Yes stick with KK for now. That's surprising that your battery is draining so fast now. Can you go to your battery usage and see what is sucking up most of your juice? I have heard others state that it took a few days for their phone to settle in after the upgrade (I personally think people were so excited for the new OS that they were just using their phone a lot more than they were before .) I know mine has been draining faster because I've been doing so many things with it since the update. I highly recommend the app "Greenify" since you are rooted. It will automatically hibernate any non-necessary background apps that suck up ram, battery, and data.

Sure thing. When its all good and working...it should appear something like this
Agree on greenify. It is an truly awesome app for improving battery life! Better battery stats with root use enabled for checking wakelocks also. I had the same experience with motorcare. Major batterydrainer. Being able to properly disable apps, is worth rooting alone.
I deleted both my Facebook app and messenger, and I had much better battery life for a few days. Now however, my sot is barely at 2 1/2 hours again, and my top usage is chrome. It's pretty frustrating because I stopped using Facebook altogether, and in still having poor battery. I think chrome is not letting it doze. Any of you guys have had the same issues?

Are you logged into Facebook on chrome and using notifications? What I do is just log into Facebook each time I open chrome and close the page when I leave it through recent apps. If that's not the issue you could try clearing all data for chrome and then clear phone cache.

yeah from what i've read there is no fix. not sure if even a factory reset would fix it.
Some people recommended downgrading to the 2.15 radio which i did last night so i can't say whether it got much better yet or not.
Also, you can still take the updates while rooted. its very simple to do yourself or there is a tool call flashfire which does it for you now i think
