I was wondering if there is a way other than either disabling or freezing system apps. If I remove them, it causes settings to fc. This has held true since the 4.4 update. I usually always get ride of apps to free up more space, RAM, ect...

As I know you can only disable system apps(as I do) but they are still there and without root you can not completely delete or modify system apps, which is basicly leaves you with a custom rom.
If it's force closing when you disable them then the best thing you can do is just install a custom Rom and kernel. If you like stock then I suggest Nexus 5 Experience with Franco kernel.
I use an app called systemapp remover. In 4.3, maybe theres an update.

You can use any file explorer(Solid File Explorer) to uninstall system apps. Titanium Backup to freeze them.
Hey guys sorry for not responding sooner. The problem is that I am rooted and running a custom ROM. There are still certain thing I get ride of (NFC, or calendar storage for example) that I just never use. I've tried on stock, PSX, and Purity with the same results. Remember I'm uninstalling them not freezing or disabling.

Try uninstaling foreign keyboards , wallpapers e.t.c. Also I have 100mb+ of system space free so I guess your phone is similar so why do you need more. I can understand deleting system apps to get more free ram and space on cheap budget phone's with little of both. The likelihood of you needing to free up either on this phone is slim at best my guess never. Just my thoughts as I am interested in why your doing this.

Honestly, I just always have. I have about the same free space as you. I just like having the option of taking the things off of my phone that I don't want on there. What if I did want bone stock, I would be stuck with all that bloat wear. I just always considered it as one of the reasons for rooting your phone.

I know where you're coming from as its something I have always done until getting this phone. Don't no what the problem is as all apps I uninstall have been o.k. I always freeze first to make sure there's no surprises then uninstall. You could try greenify from play and put them to sleep if having problems. That said I have no answer to you're specific problem.
Just keep them if its causing problems and enjoy you're phone knowing it can handle the extra unwanted apps.
You could always flash a vanilla android rom ( there's a few about ) with banks minimum gapps and that should do the trick. Just install the apps you need

Yeah, I'm running Purity with the very minimal banks gapps and the system apps I don't use disabled. It doesn't really bother me. I had asked the same question when 4.4 was first released and I guess figured there was a work around by now. No biggy. Thanks for your incite:thumbup:

Ok so I have had a few nexus 4's and seems like everyone has been the same experience. I root and/or flash custom ROM and load all my apps from my titanium backup which honestly think dates back to my epic 4g I had a while back. I have about 170 apps and none are very big.
Seems like I get a little lag here and there and my gf who has about 80 apps ( I am going off when it says android is upgrading) and hers just feels faster just a little.
Could this be because I have never done a clean install of the apps. Most have been upgraded thru updates so I would think this would not matter.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

I am running stock unrooted still locked boot loader and I have no lag at all and I have >120 apps
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I clean installed all my apps and restored data only from titanium, no lag here and I have a hundred or so apps.

I use google to restore all my apps, they're mostly all from the market, so its a five minute process every time I wipe or install a new rom. No real lag here, unless I cause it by tinkering lol.
I want to update to 4.3 but I can't afford losing my apps. And If I root my N4 does my games still available.

Assuming I got your questions right right:
1. If you have the preinstalled stock android and go through with the normal 4.3 update automatically offered by google, it won't affect your apps.
2. Rooting will only give you more "permissions" to change stuff on your phone. Some apps actually require the phone to be rooted to work properly. It should not affect your apps as well. Keep in mind that we are just talking about rooting. If you do this for later usage of another rom, installing that WILL affect your apps.
Hope I could help you.
So If I root this, I will not lose my games and apps right?

As long as you do this carefully and don't screw it up (just look for instructions here, they are quiet good) then your apps will be fine.
Of course, if you do screw it up, your apps will be the least of your problems.
I recommend reading this beforehand:

and this for the actual rooting:

Does every Nexus 4 bootloader is locked?

OK, it is now out of control. I need to access Yahoo mail but here is one of the latest permissions just released:
RECORD AUDIO (Microphone):
"Allows the app to record audio with the microphone. This permission allows the app to record audio at any time without your confirmation".
I suspect the reason for this is to enable voice search, but the above statement allows a whole lot more.
In the past week or so I have been seeing a lot of these ridiculous permissions. I guess the battle to monetize on your personal information is heating up drastically.
So, can anyone recommend an app that they are using with the stock ROM, rooted, that I can either selectively per installed app or permanently disable access to the hardware (microphone, camera, etc.). It would be nice if the app works with all other non-hardware related permissions as well. I see there are apps for custom ROMS (Xposed, PDdroid), but I really don't want to install everything on my phone from scratch again, and the stock rooted ROM does everything that I need.
Xposed with app ops. Works great. xposed works fine on stock rom

Thanks. Just installed it and works great.
I try to deny as many permissions as possible. Most apps work perfectly fine even though most permissions have been denied.

I was wondering about that. I actually tried this out on a few, and the apps kept on working. The only problem I see with all of this is that most apps update automatically and the authors are constantly sneeking in new permissions. This is going to become a maintenance nightmare. Can I at least prevent apps from automatically updating so I can check them out one at a time before I update, which would help out a little?
You can disable automatic updates in the play store settings. You'll just get a notification of new updates available so you can check them first.

Great, I never even knew there were settings in there.
Today I switched from AppOppsXposed to Xprivacy. Because in AppOppsXposed the apps were spread all over the place under different heading categories, and repeated under different headings in some cases, it was a bit of a pain trying to locate all the apps. Xprivacy is better set up in that regard, has much finer controls, several global settings options, and in most cases instead of blocking data it sends fake data, thus reducing the chance of an app not working or crashing. It was incredible the massive amount of things I was able to block, with no affect on any of the running apps.

There should be a list somewhere of all this pre-loaded bull**** so you can remove it without missing any.
Without root you can't install WA+.
Disabling WA ist maybe possible, but anyhow, you can't install WA+!
It's so unbelievable from Samsung.
I've written Samsung and complained about this. Also on Facebook. Public is always more effective. Maybe if more complaints come, possibly something happens
Facebook App ist also a System App and can't removed, or no old version can't be used.

Not sure what would actually be effective. People have complained about pre-installed apps on Android for, what, five years now? It's never done any good, and the hundreds of millions of additional Android users since back then clearly haven't made the complaints any more effective, either. The option of rooting is there, for people who want to completely have them removed from storage. Otherwise, disabling the apps gets rid of the icons and takes care of any performance hit. The actual size they take up is less than one half of 1% of device storage, so they're really not a big deal. It's just the psychological effect of knowing they're there. I've just learned to ignore it.
After coming from the Nexus 5 with its lack of expandable storage, I learned pretty quick that a couple megs for a stock app make a poor target for blame when I'm angry because I've got nowhere to put a 500+mb game I bought.
-Edit: On the other hand, when a preinstalled app makes it impossible to install another version of the same app from the store, it might go further to train yourself to treat that sort of thing like a bug. Report it to their technical support and act incredulous that they'd let such broken behavior into a production release. ;P
On KitKat i usually get around 1.5gb of free internal space with the apps i always install (around 200 apps).
The problem started when i upgraded to Touchwiz Lollipop 5.0.1, with the same setup i get only 400mb of free internal space, why is it using an extra gb only for lollipop.
Is there a way to regain that extra space on lollipop?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
It's because Lollipop is using art instead of dalvik runtime so apps take up more space and also take a bit longer to install if you have noticed. I believe there's nothing you can do about it.

didn't know it was due to the art runtime, and you're right, it takes way more time to install an app (i noticed with Titanium Backup, the process of restoring is 3 times slower in Lollipop compared to KitKat).
It's a shame there's nothing left to do besides moving apps to the sd card.
Thanks for the explanation though
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
Well, there is one thing you can do. Uninstall the apps that you don't use. With two-hundred of them on your device it's a pretty safe bet that some of them haven't been looked at in a while.
