Hardware Privacy App? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, it is now out of control. I need to access Yahoo mail but here is one of the latest permissions just released:
RECORD AUDIO (Microphone):
"Allows the app to record audio with the microphone. This permission allows the app to record audio at any time without your confirmation".
I suspect the reason for this is to enable voice search, but the above statement allows a whole lot more.
In the past week or so I have been seeing a lot of these ridiculous permissions. I guess the battle to monetize on your personal information is heating up drastically.
So, can anyone recommend an app that they are using with the stock ROM, rooted, that I can either selectively per installed app or permanently disable access to the hardware (microphone, camera, etc.). It would be nice if the app works with all other non-hardware related permissions as well. I see there are apps for custom ROMS (Xposed, PDdroid), but I really don't want to install everything on my phone from scratch again, and the stock rooted ROM does everything that I need.

Xposed with app ops. Works great. xposed works fine on stock rom

Thanks. Just installed it and works great.

I try to deny as many permissions as possible. Most apps work perfectly fine even though most permissions have been denied.

I was wondering about that. I actually tried this out on a few, and the apps kept on working. The only problem I see with all of this is that most apps update automatically and the authors are constantly sneeking in new permissions. This is going to become a maintenance nightmare. Can I at least prevent apps from automatically updating so I can check them out one at a time before I update, which would help out a little?

You can disable automatic updates in the play store settings. You'll just get a notification of new updates available so you can check them first.

Great, I never even knew there were settings in there.

Today I switched from AppOppsXposed to Xprivacy. Because in AppOppsXposed the apps were spread all over the place under different heading categories, and repeated under different headings in some cases, it was a bit of a pain trying to locate all the apps. Xprivacy is better set up in that regard, has much finer controls, several global settings options, and in most cases instead of blocking data it sends fake data, thus reducing the chance of an app not working or crashing. It was incredible the massive amount of things I was able to block, with no affect on any of the running apps.

Android Market just stopped working (stock rooted tmo)

I'm running the stock rom on my rooted t-mobile tab, and today i've suddenly started having issues with the Android Market. At first thw problem was with certain apps (ones that needed updates) not downloading, but now it seems as though the majority of apps have disappeared from the market altogether. Everything looks right on my myTouch 4G, so I know that the issue is local to my tab, but I have no idea what that issue is. I've gone in to the settings and clear the market app's cache, as well as uninstalling updates, and it has done nothing.
Please help. I'd rather not have to wipe everything and just hope for the best. Thanks.

Try clearing the market data under settings-applications. I think that worked for me.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
same thing happened to me yesterday, i think its because google is setting up in app payments
Clearing data didn't do anything. It fixed itself over time, thankfully, although there is now no record of any free apps I've downloaded (which means no update notifications, and is actually kind of an issue.)
Reading the reports about a new test market showing up on some devices I'm pretty sure thats what happened to me, because I do recall seeing content ratings on the few apps that were available. Too bad I didn't think to look for the google music app.

It will clear up in a day or so too.
I sure hope so. I'm using App Brain to notifyme of updates in the interim (as a tip to anyone dealing with the same thing) but of course that mea mbs havig remember to ignore u puffs ates from apps I got through Amazon.

New Android Market

Title says it all.
I wonder if someone has the apk already.

Wondering the same thing, I posted a thread in the themes and apps section asking this also.
Here ya go. Copy to system/app.
You beat me to it I just saw this on another thread!
Fir those that has downloaded it how is it, and can we vibrant users play the movies?

Strange thing happened, the market downgraded itself. I guess its not the time to update yet.

A downgrade indeed... in terms of features. You can't view the permissions of the app before downloading now, updates don't seem to show up on top. There is a possibility that I might have missed those features since I'm new to this.
On the plus side, it's super fast now and there are more useful categories. I hope they bring back the old features if they've been removed.

I'll need to check that out. Thanks!
But how about the updates? I know there's an app that has an update because I didn't grab it yet. Lo and behold, the app does have an update button in the app details BUT it doesn't show up on top of the list. Maybe I'll try doing stuff like rebooting my phone.
Oh, and one more thing. There's no longer the auto-update check mark like before. Is it really missing or am I just missing it?

My two updates are at the very top and seperated. And of course you can see permissions. Click download and a seperate page comes up to confirm and shows permissions and more clearly I might add.
Also its only showing the updates of apps actually downloaded from the market. I too had two that weren't showing but they did in fact have updates. The reason is those two were backups from like November and I don't remember if I got them from the market or here.

All my applications that needs to be updated are on top also there's still an option for automatic updates.
This is really a good update. I just need a wifi at my house so I can now rent movies.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
So it turns out that all of the features that appeared missing (uninstall, auto-update, permissions section) were mostly caused by my apps losing their market links.. and being too quick to judge for the permissions one. After rebooting, the list of all my installed apps disappeared where they were in the "not installed" section before. So I think I'll have to find a way to restore them. It's either with market doctor in Titanium and/or clearing the market data, right?
I hear rooted users can not rent movies though the new market. Is this true?

Yup, rooted phones can't watch movies. I don't see them removing that policy because of piracy issues.
But it really sucks to be this way, maybe they should do what amazon is doing? Making sure that the movies will only work on the account that downloaded it?

Thanks EB for the link. working perfectly on SimplyHoney 3.9.1.
tried the market apk on the latest cm7 nightly, but when i try to open it i get the message "you must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?" so i choose yes but nothing happens i logged in to google thru the browser but no luck there either any suggestions??
After spending about 15 min with this, I have to say that this market is a nice improvement. The issues I encountered were all temporary (missing update button, security permissions lists before download, etc). Sucks that they decided to stop rooted users from video rentals. I can see why, but in the end someone will figure out how to bypass that.
If anyone has issues listing their installed apps in My Apps my solution was to use titanium backup to wipe the data of the market app clean + using the market doctor. I also had two accounts in accounts and sync and had to get rid of the secondary one to get to load up my default sync data.

You have to accounts and sync in the settings and add an account. Quite weird that you can't do it through the actual market. I never had an issue doing that in youtube!

"Sending..."

Had anyone noticed this on their SGN? It pops up about twice an hour on mine. I had the Google data collection disabled when I set my phone up so I am not sure what's causing this. I never notice this on my previous android phones. I just hope it's not some rogue app trying to sneak out my infos....

Hi,
The only input I can give on this is that I too have noticed this only however upon a fresh install and don't seem to see if afterwards. I do disable certain system apps and so maybe the reason I don't see if is because I have disabled whatever is responsible for it or just coincidence.
I'm just about to flash a new rom, Rocket V17 to Cassies ExtraLite V6 and so I'll post if I see the same.
I noticed this with stock KKA, KL7, KL8 and now on LA1 as well....
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I flashed Cassie's XtraLiteRom LA3 rom and haven't seen it yet, usually I have by now. All my apps have been restored too, so perhaps it was being shown by a system app that's been cleaned out from this rom. Not sure which one though if this is the case
Thats great, I think it's a system app. I hope somebody can help pin-point the culprit.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
One way to find out the culprit would perhaps be by using LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market:
LBE Privacy Guard
Once installed on a rooted system, anything that wants to connect to the internet must seeks its permission first. Anything that seems suspect, deny access. Obviously be careful with what you are restricting though, but this should help...
I'd use this method myself but after flashing Cassie's I no longer have the "sending" popup.
Hope this helps!
Thanks mate, I'll give it a go.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Another option is to install DROIDwall and check the log file to see what app is blocked.
+1 on LBE!
First app that gets installed on my device when I wipe, install a new rom, or start up a brand new phone. Also has a side benefit, if the app doesn't need data access, to help block in app ads
Most apps have no business accessing my location, my sms app, contacts etc.

(Q) Uninstalling system apps? 4.4.2

I was wondering if there is a way other than either disabling or freezing system apps. If I remove them, it causes settings to fc. This has held true since the 4.4 update. I usually always get ride of apps to free up more space, RAM, ect...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
As I know you can only disable system apps(as I do) but they are still there and without root you can not completely delete or modify system apps, which is basicly leaves you with a custom rom.
If it's force closing when you disable them then the best thing you can do is just install a custom Rom and kernel. If you like stock then I suggest Nexus 5 Experience with Franco kernel.
I use an app called systemapp remover. In 4.3, maybe theres an update.

You can use any file explorer(Solid File Explorer) to uninstall system apps. Titanium Backup to freeze them.
Hey guys sorry for not responding sooner. The problem is that I am rooted and running a custom ROM. There are still certain thing I get ride of (NFC, or calendar storage for example) that I just never use. I've tried on stock, PSX, and Purity with the same results. Remember I'm uninstalling them not freezing or disabling.

Try uninstaling foreign keyboards , wallpapers e.t.c. Also I have 100mb+ of system space free so I guess your phone is similar so why do you need more. I can understand deleting system apps to get more free ram and space on cheap budget phone's with little of both. The likelihood of you needing to free up either on this phone is slim at best my guess never. Just my thoughts as I am interested in why your doing this.

Honestly, I just always have. I have about the same free space as you. I just like having the option of taking the things off of my phone that I don't want on there. What if I did want bone stock, I would be stuck with all that bloat wear. I just always considered it as one of the reasons for rooting your phone.

I know where you're coming from as its something I have always done until getting this phone. Don't no what the problem is as all apps I uninstall have been o.k. I always freeze first to make sure there's no surprises then uninstall. You could try greenify from play and put them to sleep if having problems. That said I have no answer to you're specific problem.
Just keep them if its causing problems and enjoy you're phone knowing it can handle the extra unwanted apps.
You could always flash a vanilla android rom ( there's a few about ) with banks minimum gapps and that should do the trick. Just install the apps you need
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah, I'm running Purity with the very minimal banks gapps and the system apps I don't use disabled. It doesn't really bother me. I had asked the same question when 4.4 was first released and I guess figured there was a work around by now. No biggy. Thanks for your incite:thumbup:

MM update. Default apps issue.

Hi guys
Just installed the MM update for my Note 4. Didn't notice any difference at first, then discovered that Allcast no longer streams to my Xbox DLNA, and also now in the gallery whenever you click on a video it gives you the choice of apps to open it with ONCE then automatically sets that as the default, so if I want to open a video in a different player I now have to go into app manager and clear the defaults. Then I can open with the app I want. But that gets set as default too so it never ends.
This is really REALLY annoying.
Please does anyone know of a fix around this?
Many thanks.

+1 for this, been using it for years: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aboutmycode.betteropenwith
Basically you set it as the default app for opening a particular file type or link, and then within this app you can choose which other apps are allowed to open said files or links. You can also have a countdown to open with a default choice, giving you a few seconds to choose an alternative.
Been meaning to ask this since I upgraded to MM, always thought that this was a stupid MM feature, but now I see this is a bug right?
Thanks to that app anyway, don't like unnecessary apps, but still better than annoyance caused by waste of time.
It's not a bug, it's a further stupidity from Samsung. You can find this so called feature nobody wants on other devices as well (Note 5 and S7).
Thanks guys. Will try that app out.
This is without doubt the worst software update yet, so much to complain about!
