Accidentally killed my nexus one last year....

At about 11:00 pm, I had my Nexus one in my back pocket, as my new skinny jeans have no front pocket (yes I'm a girl). We were at a New Year's party, I went to the restroom, dropped my pants and heard a large PLOP. Horrified I turned around in slow motion knowing what I would see. Nice bubbles rising from my beautiful nexus one.
Now it's in a bag of rice, and hoping for the best. Thankfully I do have a squaretrade warranty on it!!

I hope you removed the battery immediately. Put it in a SEALED CONTAINER full of rice in a warm place or under some sunlight and leave it there AT LEAST 2-3 cycles of it accumulating moisture on the lid of the container. Each day or so, change out the rice, wipe down any moisture, fill it with fresh rice and start it over. Once no moisture is on the lid, do it one more time for a day or so. Do not put the battery in or try to power it on until that point.
And keep in mind your battery might be toast regardless. You might get lucky on the phone, however.
BTW, might not want to re-use the rice after, considering where the moisture is coming from

Thanks for the info.
I think I grabbed it really quickly from the toilet, but it felt like slow motion as it seemed like I stalled for 10 seconds, watching in horror the bubbles rising. I can still see it now! haha
I did immediately remove the battery. It's now in a ziplock of rice. It's been in there since 3 am this morning. There's moisture in the corners of the screen. Will wait it out. I am currently using a cheap freebie lg flip phone and it hurts, lol.
My fear is the fact that it was blue water... they had one of those deodorant things in the tank. That can't be good.

batteries are very cheap on ebay, $6.50 shipped

Real bummer of the nexus.. I hope it survives. Would be a real shame if you left the N1 forums :-(

Yes, it's absorbent. We used to put rice in our salt shaker down in humid Louisiana to keep it from clumping.
And yes, the comment about not re-using the rice was very funny. If this thing works, then I have to think about the toilet water tainted phone against my ear.

My mom dropped her phone in her coffee the other day.
Dried for two weeks with no rice. Now it has those coffe lines in the resistant touchscreen 0.o

Yeah, just don't be in a hurry to use it, even if your current phone sucks compared... If you use it too fast you will kill it, right now there might be a chance.. Who knows about the blue sanitizer, but as long as it's not corrosive or conductive and leave nasty bits behind it might not be a problem.
I'd suggest a sealed tight tupperware dish with fresh rice and put it it somewhere warm or with sunlight, and again, keep changing it until it's at least past one cycle WITHOUT any condensation on the tupperware. It could be a week, but personally I'd rather be without the N1 for a week than forever.

unless you have a giant bag of desiccant in your house somewhere.

i submerged my N1 in teh sink while washing dishes. I had shoulder surgery and was on the phone doing dishes ( was my first mistake). I had my N1 in the sling with headphones on and when i leaned forward, it slid right under the running water. I grabbed it and dried it off best i could, took the battery,sim,sd,batter cover off. I then put it in a tupperware container buried in rice for 24 hours sealed and it works like it never happened

I dropped my N1 into the drain once. Fully submerged in water and I only manage to get it out a minute later.
Lucky it was in the pouch which made the water go in slower.
Put it in a dry cabinet (the ones for camera gear) for a day and happy to report I'm still using it now.

So, I couldn't resist trying, everything looked very dry. Patience has never been a virtue of mine. Soon as I woke up I stuck the battery in and fired this puppy up. I was worried, it stayed on the boot logo for what seemed like longer than usual, but she's up and running! Speaker seems to work fine, I haven't made a call yet but will in just a bit.
After dropping it in la toilette, I took off the screen protecter as well. This morning I notice when the screen is off, the reflection looks a little funny, kind of a different hue, slightly hazy reflection given off, but I'm not sure if that's just how it looks without a screen protector, or if it's a result of the blue water.
Phone is charging now, and that seems to be working fine too.

Sounds like a bit of luck there.

Sorry to hear that. If it can't turn it on then no. However there are ways to get water out of the device. Put it in a sack of rice for many days . I'm not quite sure about it. Search google about water removal.

rice can be good solution ... not hard to try

If rice doesn't cut it, you can try to open it and clean it. Or get someone who knows how to do that, to do it for you.
It is a desperate solution, but quite a few things can be fixed like this. And since the NS doesn't require special screwdrivers...

A tip from my friend experiencing similar accident is:
Don't ever turn the phone on after it sunk in the water.
Remove the back cover, put out the battery.
Bury them (phone, battery, back cover) in a sack of rice for some days.
My friend told me that he got his Nexus S revived after doing this.
Hope this helps.

coming from an engineering background I would first take it completely apart and rice those components. the more surface area to dry the better.

This is perfect advice.
One night while fishing I fell out of boat into the water with my HTC Wizard on in my back pocket. Once I was safe, I pulled the phone out of my pocket and took the battery out. When I got home I packed the phone and battery in rice for a few days. That got 99% of the water out. There was still water behind the screen. So I did a Google search and found some guy in france who fell in the water fishing, and did what I did, then used a MICROWAVE to get the rest of the water out of the screen. Soooo.... I stuck the phone in the microwave for 3 seconds at a time until the screen dried. Worked like a frickin champ.

Dropped my N4 in the toilet WTF

So I was relieving myself after a double thanksgiving dinner this morning and I was reading the XDA forums (Of course).. The phone landed square on my mess and dropped through and continued to end up in the hole in the bottom of the toilet. I fished it out with my bare hand because well, its a nearly 400 dollar phone and I just dont care - I'll just not bite my nails for a couple days after I wash them.
Thanks to google for the Non-Removable battery! I'm basically f*cked. The phone was still turned on and working through all of this. I wiped all the crap and water off of it, set it down and thought about what the hell I could do. I frantically flung the phone up and down in the swinging motion to try to get the water and crap out from inside it, which it seemed to only be coming out of the speaker hole and ear hole. OMG. I put it in a bag of white rice (which will probably turn brown) and stuck it in a cabinet. I'm afraid to even go look at it. I don't know if I should tear it down and try to clean it but let me tell you, I'm glad I ordered 2 of them. I'm still waiting on the other which is on back order.
Is there anything else I can do? How long should I leave it in the rice? The phone wasn't in the toilet long, but It's probably going to smell forever. /sigh

Yikes, sorry to hear that. I dropped my bluetooth headset into the dog's water dish yesterday morning, if that's any consolation. Haven't taken it out of the rice yet to see if it still works.

No I didn't but I think its working because the rice seems to be swelling and the bag has a layer of moisture inside it

I bought it on a MC Check card from my bank, so I'll call in a little bit and see what happens.
How long should I leave it in the rice? I wouldn't sell it on ebay but since I bought two maybe I'll give this one to my girlfriend and keep the one that's on back order, thank god she's not on XDA she will never know. I had finally talked her out of using her iPhone and switching over to Android. If it still smells or anything and still works I can always just say they are made overseas with somewhat of a toxicy smell to them because of the plastics they use or something I guess?

Leave it for AT LEAST 8 hours in the rice.

Make sure you clean it and wash your hands after.

Tear it apart and clean it with some distilled water (correct me if that's not right) make sure the battery is out. Let it sit after cleaning for like a week. Last step get a good Bluetooth headset so you don't have to press it against your face lol.

Yeah, distilled is non-conductive as I recall. That's why they always recommended for liquid cooled computers in case of a leak.

Phone was on the table in the sauna, next to other phones. A couple of times and shot phot video Swimming pool. After a moment he saw the condensate. The phone works on still normal. After a time, he passed out and is no longer included. SD below the door and the sim, stripes red. At the same time, signs of water were found. But dripping on plugs from the back side had.

I think the phone is waterproof, not steamproof.

Did you read the manual? It says you should not use the phone in hot water.

I have about another. Phone was lying on the battery in the room dried.

I think steam is still capable of penetrating the housing rubber seal, since it is in a gas form. The seals are made to prevent water breach, not gas Lessons learned for all of us, no? Never bring the phone to the steamy and hot place..
Hope I can get that phone next week in Indonesia *fingers crossed*

I have come across another condition that I have dropped the photo to the warm water and at once the phone cannot be launched, but after a week,I can use it normally.I feel very strange because I have do nothing.

IP57 isn't steam proof...
Of course it's going to get wet inside, never mind the condensation.

I get that steam will be able to get into the phone, but...
That would mean that you also can't take a shower with the phone, unless you only shower with cold water.
And if I do remember, Sony said that you were allowed to shower with your phone:silly:

I think that the phone died because of temperature which lead to condensation..
Condensation can kill any electronics (not camera lens).
I've tested the phone and yes, i've got some condensation too on the front and back camera after throwing the phone for over 30min into a tank with cold water - this was for testing purposes, the room was warm.
To fix the condensation, turn the phone off, open all the flaps and put Your phone in a box filled with rice. Close the box.
Mine took 4h and the condensation was fully gone...You can also try silica bags - can be found in shoe boxes.

As HTC U11 is IP67 rated, things were turning in my head for few days, and I finally take my courage to put it on the water.
Many video are testing that point, but what I find was a little bit obvious.
I have no problem with the phone after its dive on the swimming pool, I only put it 15 or 20 cm max on it. If the screen is working, nothing from the software part was working. I feel like watermake a pressure on the multitask button : I would like to take some pictures but everytime I try to squeeze and engage the photo module but every time, the phone stop the photo application and run the task changer app ... Reall curious.
So I'd like to see if someone here try to take picture under water ?

Thank you for sharing. I did not try this with my U11 yet but my S7, S8 and XZ premium worked fine under water or with water on screen.

It was in a swimming pool, with no salt treatment

Tested it today. I wish there's an under water mode that turns off touchscreen and touch buttons.

HTC states it is "water resistant" not waterproof. No way in hell would I put this beast under water LMAO

HTC claims the phone has an ip67 rating, so up to 1 meter for a maximum of 30 minutes it should actually be water proof.
I regulary submerged my S7 and used it while showering, the phone was still running strong after a year. Even screen worked under water, pretty cool.

did you try to open the camera 1st and set a timer. After that dive and take the picture?

I regulary submerged my S7 and used it while showering, the phone was still running strong after a year. Even screen worked under water, pretty cool.

They also claim water resistant.
Water-resistant: able to resist the penetration of water to some degree but not entirely
Water-repellent: not easily penetrated by water, especially as a result of being treated for such a purpose with a surface coating

Yeah, I wouldn't trust the IP67 rating at all. Also, that's for fresh water, not chemically treated water, soapy water, etc. The warranty information also says that water damage is not covered under the warranty so if you're unlucky and you have a seam that isn't sealed and your phone dies, you've got an expensive paperweight.
Its kind of backwards considering that the M7 survived CNET's ridiculous torture tactics including dropping it in a soda, throwing it out of a moving vehicle, throwing it on a BBQ... They thought it was dead but put it in silica packets for a week anyway and to their surprise, it actually powered on. If I remember correctly, the only thing that was wrong with it was the charging port got damaged in the toss so they had to fight to charge it.

There's no doubt the U11 can't stand up to the same torture the M7 and M8 could. The screen didn't sustain any damage even after being chucked twice out of a moving vehicle while the frame actually started to lift.

Hi, I had a similar experience to yours. As a work around, what i did was submerge only half of the device inside the water(upside down). I was able to get some pictures and videos. But its tricky as you can really see how the picture is coming as half the screen in submerged and the other half is above water. But nevertheless the camera performance was absolutely brilliant.
I do agree, HTC should have an "Underwater" mode that disables the touch buttons and touch screen (but leave the display on). It would be very useful.

Has anyone tried the glove mode for under water pictures? That worked pretty well on my Sony in the shower, so who knows

There is no way I would put my U11 underwater on purpose, it states on the HTC site that it is only water repellent not water proof but go ahead and test it for us I would like to know how well it does lol.

Well I meant to say that they also claim it only to be water resistant. ***EDIT sorry just noticed I already made this comment lol

I work as a construction worker and I've already washed my U11 with clear water at home, because it had a lot of dust on it and inside the charging port. No problem at all.

I just went swimming with my U11 in my pocket. Maybe about 15 mins at 3-4 feet. Currently drying right now. I got itchy and tried powering it on perhaps a bit too soon but I got the HTC screen and it locked up. Screen went off and let it sit for awhile longer. When I press the power button the green LED comes on but nothing else. Waiting and praying it's not dead!
