Accidentally killed my nexus one last year....

At about 11:00 pm, I had my Nexus one in my back pocket, as my new skinny jeans have no front pocket (yes I'm a girl). We were at a New Year's party, I went to the restroom, dropped my pants and heard a large PLOP. Horrified I turned around in slow motion knowing what I would see. Nice bubbles rising from my beautiful nexus one.
Now it's in a bag of rice, and hoping for the best. Thankfully I do have a squaretrade warranty on it!!

I hope you removed the battery immediately. Put it in a SEALED CONTAINER full of rice in a warm place or under some sunlight and leave it there AT LEAST 2-3 cycles of it accumulating moisture on the lid of the container. Each day or so, change out the rice, wipe down any moisture, fill it with fresh rice and start it over. Once no moisture is on the lid, do it one more time for a day or so. Do not put the battery in or try to power it on until that point.
And keep in mind your battery might be toast regardless. You might get lucky on the phone, however.
BTW, might not want to re-use the rice after, considering where the moisture is coming from

Thanks for the info.
I think I grabbed it really quickly from the toilet, but it felt like slow motion as it seemed like I stalled for 10 seconds, watching in horror the bubbles rising. I can still see it now! haha
I did immediately remove the battery. It's now in a ziplock of rice. It's been in there since 3 am this morning. There's moisture in the corners of the screen. Will wait it out. I am currently using a cheap freebie lg flip phone and it hurts, lol.
My fear is the fact that it was blue water... they had one of those deodorant things in the tank. That can't be good.

batteries are very cheap on ebay, $6.50 shipped

Real bummer of the nexus.. I hope it survives. Would be a real shame if you left the N1 forums :-(

Yes, it's absorbent. We used to put rice in our salt shaker down in humid Louisiana to keep it from clumping.
And yes, the comment about not re-using the rice was very funny. If this thing works, then I have to think about the toilet water tainted phone against my ear.

Dried for two weeks with no rice. Now it has those coffe lines in the resistant touchscreen 0.o

Yeah, just don't be in a hurry to use it, even if your current phone sucks compared... If you use it too fast you will kill it, right now there might be a chance.. Who knows about the blue sanitizer, but as long as it's not corrosive or conductive and leave nasty bits behind it might not be a problem.
I'd suggest a sealed tight tupperware dish with fresh rice and put it it somewhere warm or with sunlight, and again, keep changing it until it's at least past one cycle WITHOUT any condensation on the tupperware. It could be a week, but personally I'd rather be without the N1 for a week than forever.

unless you have a giant bag of desiccant in your house somewhere.

i submerged my N1 in teh sink while washing dishes. I had shoulder surgery and was on the phone doing dishes ( was my first mistake). I had my N1 in the sling with headphones on and when i leaned forward, it slid right under the running water. I grabbed it and dried it off best i could, took the battery,sim,sd,batter cover off. I then put it in a tupperware container buried in rice for 24 hours sealed and it works like it never happened

I dropped my N1 into the drain once. Fully submerged in water and I only manage to get it out a minute later.
Lucky it was in the pouch which made the water go in slower.
Put it in a dry cabinet (the ones for camera gear) for a day and happy to report I'm still using it now.

So, I couldn't resist trying, everything looked very dry. Patience has never been a virtue of mine. Soon as I woke up I stuck the battery in and fired this puppy up. I was worried, it stayed on the boot logo for what seemed like longer than usual, but she's up and running! Speaker seems to work fine, I haven't made a call yet but will in just a bit.
After dropping it in la toilette, I took off the screen protecter as well. This morning I notice when the screen is off, the reflection looks a little funny, kind of a different hue, slightly hazy reflection given off, but I'm not sure if that's just how it looks without a screen protector, or if it's a result of the blue water.
Phone is charging now, and that seems to be working fine too.

Sounds like a bit of luck there.

Update 3/2/11. I cleaned the phone with the cleaner posted in this thread. Got all the soap residue off no problem and dried very quickly. Got the spare battery out and tried the phone...nothing. It doesn't even try to turn on. I did get my data off the external SD. I really wish I could get the data off the internal SD as it has most of what I want like a bunch of photos and stuff. Oh well. Thanks for the tips in this thread.

What are the odds I'll at least be able to recover data off my external sd card? I have nandroid backups on it if I have to get a new phone.
Whole story.
I got in the shower my pants (with the phone in the pocket) got picked up by my girlfriend who thought she would help out and wash them with some other laundry. The phone went through all but the spin cycle before I got it out.
The phone was on when it went in and off when it came out. I pulled the battery and dissembled the phone. It is now in pieces drying out.
It looks like the underside of the main board (the metal casing holding the parts) has some discoloration, its sorta blackened and maybe has soap residue on it as well.
Anyway....this sucks.
Edit: Got the phone parts in rice. Hoping to at least get it working long enough to get my data/photos off of it.

Back in my Blackberry days there were always stories of people dropping there phones in water and it surviving.
They would take the phone apart and put it in a container of rice for a few days to absorb all the water. Problem is it was always said that pulling the battery immediately after it got wet was key. Since your phone was under for an extended period of time I dunno if this would work for you but its worth a try.

That's what I'm wondering too. Usually it's dropped in water for a few seconds, hardly time for the water to seep in and the battery can be pulled before the phone even shuts down. Mine was totally soaked.

Yeah... The outlook is kind of bleak but since its such an expensive device and a bag of rice is really cheap give it a shot.. Never know!

yeah, i've had that same thing happen with a phone and my zune (get in shower with phone/zune still in pants pocket...). when my phone went through the wash it was non functional, when my zune went through the wash it dried and has worked just as well for years.

how common is it to take a shower with pants on? Am I the only weirdo that takes showers without pants? Whats going on lol

I think the best way is to put it on the drier.

one good thing is you can probably( dont know if this is still true) find a vibrant for very cheap.. as people have been dumping them left and right.

A great example of how important a comma can be
Put it in a jar of rice... this is a must do.

Its days are numbered.
If your phone was submerged in soapy water for a rinse cycle, then this is what will probably happen:
• If you take it apart some and dry it out (heat, bag of rice, etc) completely for a day or two and then put it back together, it will probably work fine at first.
• Over the next few weeks, it will start to break down as circuit traces and contacts corrode
I would highly recommend purchasing a Motorola Defy (waterproof), which should be able to withstand a wash cycle.
Also, find a girlfriend who isn't so absent minded. Anyone who has EVER worn pants and done laundry should think to go through the pockets before they toss them in a washing machine. Hell, I check mine twice..... once before i toss them in the hamper and then again right before I toss them in the machine.

To be fair I don't ever check pockets I just don't leave stuff in them. And those jeans were going back on when I was getting out of the shower.

Dropped mine in the toilet. Just let it dry, everything should be fine. At first you'll probably panic and ****'ll look like its ****ed up. But after it's dry everything should be functional. Now for the beating it might've taken... I'm not sure, but my daughter(infant) and I have this vibrant dropping/slamming/throwing fetish and the phone has survived that, so you should be fine .

This is true. I was very happy with mine but thought that since this happened I would maybe at least look at other options, possibly a vibrant 4G.

Sorry man, I'd be so pissed if my Vibrant ended up in the washer. However, I can't stop laughing about this comment.

If you have access to chemicals, you can also toss it in concentrated alcohol. That will for sure remove the water and make it dry faster. It would probably help dissolve any soap residue as well. Probably won't be good for the adhesives used on the phone, but those are just used to tack down some things like the button lights and such. The rest are really held down w/ screws.

Rockin that Bionix V 1.3 w/ Androdena 5.2

Same thing happened to me just two weeks ago. Went through a full wash rinse cycle. But it never recovered. Power came back, but the screen was stuck in download mode and had heavy banding throughout the screen. My PC couldn't recognize the phone despite it being in download mode.
My mistake was trying to turn it on while it was still wet. I was completely ignorant about how to handle wet phones, and tried desperately to turn it on. Rice after one week did nothing to it... I think the damage was already done.
Hopefully with lots and lots of patience, you'll be able to get your phone back.

Nexus 4 Water Damaged

So I set my phone on the table, tried to pour myself a glass of water and spilled some water inside the phone. I tried testing the phone out and everything worked fine...except for the earpiece (where the water entered), I couldn't hear the person on the other end. So I immediately turned it off after (should've done it at the very beginning I know), blow dried it with hot air with the phone facing downwards until it got hot. Then I put it in a bag of rice overnight, just for safe measure and when I turned it on the next day I could hear the other side again, but the problem this time is the proximity sensor, which isn't detecting me.
Now I'm not able to use the keypad or go to speaker. My question is, is it easy to fix a proximity sensor without replacing it? I'm debating on whether I should sell it on eBay now, I think I would still get back the money I paid for it and maybe even a bit more.

How do you think you going to sell a faulty phone and get your money back at the same time?

Should've taken it apart and put the pieces in rice, not just the whole phone. Don't know if that could still fix the situation (since you already turned it back on), but you could always try that now.

Well, everything works except for the proximity sensor. Seems like everyone is buying Nexus 4's on eBay for $150-400 more than the asking price, I don't think I'm over-assuming that I might get most, if not all, of my money back if I were to sell it.

it's just disingenuous, hence you could look like kind of a **** for mentioning the possibility.

If you mention clearly that the phone is faulty on ebay, I would not say anything about it. However, if you hide this information and try to sell the phone as a 100% working, I'm wondering if this can be called fraud/misleading.

My bad, but I would have definitely mentioned about it in the description if I were to sell it. I don't plan on deceiving anyone about any defects the phone might have.

I just looked into the issue about proximity sensors some more. Turns out it was my crap screen protector (Xtremeguard) that caused the issue, I took it off and voila, it detected me again. Guess I don't have to sell it afterall!

Haven't you heard, the 6months old rumour about the nexus 4 being waterproof wasn't true!

but it looks like it could be waterproofed pretty easy... there's no big holes other than the headphone/usb jack, speaker grills has cover

So I was doing laundry and thought I had everything off the bed. I gathered up my Nexus 4 with my sheets and didn't realize it was in the washer until it had been submerged for several minutes. I dried it off and have had it under a fan for a couple days. I am going to put it in rice for a couple more.
Should I take it apart and put it in the rice?
Update: I have a little precision screw driver set but even the really small ones don't seem to fit the Nexus 4 screws. I guess I will just have to put the whole phone in the rice.

Do you really think someone is going to pay you full price or more if you mentioned you spilled water on it and the sensor does not work????? This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

Just sell it for parts - NOT FULLY WORKING on ebay, don't be misleading because it will just get you negative feedback and everyone will think you are a scammer, meanwhile paypal will get the buyers money back 100%..
Be stand-up and fully explain all the problems with a good description. You'll be surprised how much you can get for a cutting edge broken/not fully working smartphone.. Look at all the broken iPhone 5's for sale and how much people are getting for them at no-reserve auctions.. its pretty nuts.

Hi all,
my nex4 had a little bit of sand and water go into it, which rendered it useless.
Now it will not even turn on.
i have had the I.C circuitry cleaned off sand and also blown dry, still no luck. It will NOT turn on
I spoke to Google saying the phone wont turn on, they have agreed to give replacement.
Will there be any problems when i send back the old phone?
PS: i no its my mistake that i should not have let it come in contact with water, but hey it deftly was not much.
My galaxy S and S2 have taken abuse, but still function. This is definitely my mistake, tho.

I was making a video trying to do a prank on my friend, and it just slipped out of my hands. It was in there for around 5 seconds and was completely soaked. I put it in a bag with rice, but that's pretty much all i know how to do.
Is there any other things I should be doing to make the phone dryer?

You may get it done using a hair dryer, using caution though, but it will still have internal water present, best would be to get a ziplock bag, 1/2 full of white rice....place the phone in there for 24-48hrs, it will absorb pretty much all the moisture. time will be the issue...
do not rush it.

Well...just leave it in for a few DAYS and hope for the best...not one day but a FEW...just cause it appears to be dry doesn't mean everything inside is dry yet

The best option is to go ahead and diassemble it and clean everything with high grade Isopropal alcohol. Even if it's not 100% alcohol it's better than the water thats in there. Also, tap water has chemicals and minerals in it that will stay behind when the water is gone that will short out all kinds of things on the boards. These need to be rinsed off so that when you do energize it, no harm will be done. No way would I allow it to dry without flushing everything first.

Do the rice trick first. Make sure you wait 48hrs at least before power-on. If that doesnt work you will have to try taking it apart.

I left my s2 hanging on a heater vent for the whole night a year ago when that happened to me. I dropped it in a sugary drink so it was worse , had to wash the charging port with distilled water before hanging it on the vent. Another time I had my phone in my pocket while walked into the ocean on the beach, that phone was a goner for obvious reasons.

I have done this with two different phones (a Nokia N95 I dropped in a cup of coffee and an Inspire 4G on a pool) and got life from the phones for a couple of years after it happened, basically they keep working until I replaced them.
Remove the battery immediately, go and buy distilled water and submerge the phone to flush the impurities that got into the phone; for the N95 I dropped in coffee I repeated the process about 5 times until the water was clear, the one in the pool just a couple of times.
Rinse it, do not use a hairdryer as the heat can losen some stuff inside, put it on rice for as long as you can (I waited a full week).
Done!, YMMV but this was my solution to flush impurities without disassembling the phone.

i have used 98% alcohol to flush out any water because it doesn't attract any electricity. then i put it in a bag of rice for 1 day and it worked. (so to speak you and still use the phone when submerged under the alcohol. i made a video of it with an older flip phone)

Like everybody else is saying take the battery out, and put the phone, and the battery in a bag full of rice. Wait 3-4 days and it should work. A hair dryer alongside that may not be a bad idea, and if u ever get it working, u might want to look into getting a case.

I agree. Not sure I would want it up against my face again even if its completely cleaned.

You know what's annoying?
It's when your non-technical friend on Facebook asks the public for assistance when they get their phone wet.
And you tell them to leave it in a bag of rice for 48 hours.
So they leave it in for 12 hours and then say everything is fine because it turns on now.
Ummh, hello. The 48 hours is not simply to get your phone to a point where it turns on. It's also to get as much of the remaining moisture out as possible, because EVENTUALLY the rest of the water is going to start corroding the phone internals and cause flakey problems down the road.
Sorry OP, I just found your thread a perfect opportunity to give a mini-rant.
ps. If it were my phone, I'd first do an isophrophy bath.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not but that is _not_ helpful, and if it isnt obvious do NOT ever do that with anything metal. I know I'm new here but serious replies only please FFS. I know plenty of people that have done this and the rice trick (with alcohol or distilled water flush as recommend previously in the thread if necessary) will work if anything does. Time and patience!

You know plenty of people who have dropped their phones in the toilet? Crazy..
I was joking btw. I never said to turn the microwave on, I just said to place it in the microwave..
You could just take out the battery and make sure it is completely dry. Then you could get a hair dryer and if it has a cool button, you could try that. or a can of air or an air compressor..
It just takes time.. let it sit there for a week and then try it.. If it doesn't work, then maybe you should get one of those lifeproof cases.. would've saved you on this one..

Well, I'll be buying sunshine a 2nd time now!

So, about 2 weeks back I bought sunshine and I was loving the unlocked bootloader and a custom rom. I lost my job a couple days after so I went to my fiance's fathers house to help him with on some demolition and rebuilding of the house. He has a hot tub. Turns out, a few drinks later we decide after working for hours, let's hit the hot tub and grab a few more beers. So I put my turbo in the swim trunks pocket and totally forget it's there. We slam a shot then head outside while it's snowing because being in the hot tub when it's snowing is pretty cool. Then I just jump right in and the phone is still in my pocket. Not realizing it, we spend 45 minutes in the tub and when I get out I find the phone in my pocket. Phone is completely shot. I put it in oats for 3 days and tried to charge and power it on, needless to say, it still didn't come back on. Now we can all laugh all my idiotic story! :crying::crying::crying::crying::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
I don't mind rebuying it though, it's a useful and cool thing. I love to have full control of my phone.

Just for ***** and giggles you should try putting it in silica (you can buy bags of it in craft shops for drying flowers) because it actually attracts draws water to it. It may actually pull enough out to boot up the phone. (I would never trust it to work but would be neat to see if it could turn on)

Yeah I actually ended up taking the phone apart and checking out the internals and I ran it under a fan for another full day but it appears the strong chlorine from the tub actually corroded a bunch of resistors and all kinds of stuff. Rust everywhere. I'm decent at working on electronics and getting stuff to work but I'm pretty sure this thing is shot. Lol. Oh well, I did try.

Seeing as you're past the point of no return, you can try washing it with soapy water (I use dish soap), but be very gentle, as corroded components tend to come off easily. After it's dried, give it a short soak OUTDOORS in naptha (vm&p from hardware store), though you might not want to do certain components, such as the battery, screen, speakers, or delicate plastics, and rinse it with more naptha. Let it air dry for a few days, and try it out. Like said earlier, this would really just be for ****s and giggles, but I have had some success with this method.

Eh, it's too late now, i've sent it back for the insurance replacement. At least i know in confidence that they'll never find out its been unlocked because it'll never turn on again haha

My wife had a Galaxy S4 that spent at least 45 minutes in the bath tub. Pulled it out, let it dry in rice, then put a vacuum to all the ports/openings and I was able to revive it. That wasn't chlorine though, and who knows how long it actually lasted after that.

Sorry to hear that you lost your job, OP. I'm currently in the same boat, and it's tough going looking for anything new. Best of luck.

I dropped my Turbo in a lake once and was able to get it out after a while. I managed to fix it by taking it apart and gently scrubbing the corroded parts with ethyl alcohol. Granted, this was lake water without the chlorine but there were a lot of minerals.

Yeah I tried everything as well and my last resort was the insurance. I did have an s4 as well and another crazy story here, well maybe not that crazy but I was with my fiance at target buying some dog food and I left my s4 sticking halfway out of my pocket and I bent down to pick the 50lb bag up with my legs and snapped the phone in half nearly. Then I got the insurance replacement for that phone but I always test everything out before I send the old phone back. Turns out the s4 they sent me had an awful speaker and microphone so I took both phones apart and swapped the microphone and speaker and it worked perfectly for another 2 years.

Yeah it sucks. I got let go because they found out I was looking for another job. I started looking because I found that they threatened to fire 2 coworkers and myself only because they wanted us to do more(put a fire under our asses as our boss said) without getting the raises we deserved after getting certifications so I obviously was pissed and so the next day I went looking for jobs and called off whenever I had an interview because f them. I'll find something, it's just a matter of time.

Yeah I did try the alcohol scrub with a toothbrush after I let everything dry out, I even went over everything twice but in the turbo a lot of stuff is actually covered by little metal boxes so you can't directly access things. I ended up giving it a good alcohol bath a few times as well, never came back lol. I did let it charge for 8 hours, it just sat there and vibrated 1000 times before it stopped. There was one point when I could see the sd card for a tenth of second hooked up to the computer but ultimately no go.

Sorry you went in the hot tub with your dad. At least it wasn't the bath tub. I couldn't get drunk enough to jump in the hot tub with my dad and we drink together a lot. We got straight for the shower baby!!! Baby oil and the whole 9!!!

No that's perfectly normal. ^_^

Just had to do the same thing, except my Turbo face planted onto the floor of a parking garage. Glass shattered and LCD busted. But... digitizer still works and I was actually able to do a blind TWRP backup and get the files off. Yassssss. Doing the transfer and everything now
I've also done the been-in-a-hot-tub-for-45-minutes-before-I-realized-my-phone-was-in-my-pocket thing though lol. Too funny

Damn. Yeah, that happens. I always have a case on with screen protection but sometimes it still gets broken. Especially when I had my job using power tools and climbing in ceilings and attics and stuff all day I broke a few phones. Haha yeah, when you're in the moment you just don't think. Oh well lol

A lot of the water damage recovery has to do with the power state during contact. If you get it completely soaked while it's powered on, you'll make direct shorts that damage components beyond repair. If you're fortunate enough to catch it quickly and power it down, or it doesn't get fully submerged to the point of soaking internals, then there's a high success rate in recovering the data if not the device.
Sorry for all of your losses listed herein... the thought of destroying or losing my phone makes my stomach turn!

Yeah thanks man. It's alright. It happens. Yeah, I wish I paid more attention but oh well lol
