[Q] S Beam Broke Video - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

My wife has a Sprint S4 that is totally stock, no root or anything, never has been. We took a video yesterday (stored on sd card) and we went to send it via S Beam to her mother today who has a stock, non-rooted S3 (Sprint too). They both had low battery; my wife's was around 3% and her mom's was around 10%. When I tried to make the transfer, it appeared successful, but the video on her mom's phone wouldn't work. I assumed there was too little battery to complete the transfer, so I figured we'd just email it from home. Now the video won't work on my wife's phone, or my computer. The file shows as being 0kb even though it shows a duration of one minute and fifty two seconds.
Is this a known issue, and is there any way to recover the file?

It may just be the format was compatible since the 2 devices were of different generation test by saving the the video externally then copying it tonthe other devicel

I tried copying the file to my desktop and playing the file with VLC, which was unable to play it. The format on both phones shouldn't matter. Android (and Samsung) didn't stop supporting .mp4 files between versions of Android. The only thing I can come up with is that because the file was so large (228MB recorded in 1080p) that S Beam wasn't able to transfer it and subsequently corrupted the video.

S beam has no size limit because all it is is using WiFi direct to establish a connection and transferring it. S beam should not affect any files because all it does is send it should affect the original file. The problem might have been with the sdcard, was it a cheap sdcard? What's the capacity of the sdcard?

Strangely, in the gallery app the details show that it's 228MB, but the My Files app shows 0MB in the details. So confusing.

Nexus S 4G not recognised by iTunes

does anyone else have an issue where photos are not being automatically seen by iPhoto ?
When I plus in my NS4G, iphoto opens up, but I do not see the phone in the sidebar ?
Can anyone offer any assistance ?

Is this your first android phone?

Huh? Is it possible to get android recognized on iTunes? If so, that's something I didn't know..

OK, sorry guys, I meant to say iPhoto, not iTunes.
When I plug the phone into my mac, iPhoto recognises the phone, but doesn't show up on the sidebar. I've had an incredible and a hero before, and they were both fine...
Sorry, should have clarified.
This has happened to me, end up manually uploading the photos

OS-X 10.7 Lion will now automatically load a picture import application whenever it detects a memory card or anything containing a DCIM pictures directory, including the Nexus S.
As for syncing your phone with iTunes, I highly recommend a program called iTuneMyWalkman. It's an iTunes plugin (for Mac) that you can use to upload your music and playlists to any device.

EXFat is now supported on the SGS3!!! Tip for fast sdcard inside!

So I just seen that the SGS3 supports EXFat and files over 4gb's now. So if you want a really fast SD card, consider formatting from Fat32 over to exfat, and set block size to 16mb or 32mb. I know most if not all my files are 5mb or way over that, so not much space is wasted! I hope that helps someone

Can you format ex fat in the phone itself or has to be pc? I purchased a 64gb sdxc card and will need to do this.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Why on earth would you want a 32 MB block size? Seems like you would end up with a ton of wasted space.

Well for me I have a lot of movies, huge pictures, music over 7mb. I myself use 16mb. But for people that want full speed from exfat will select 32mb.

I don't have the phone or Id let you know. I do have my 32gb c10 ready to go when it gets here though

So would that mean that any files I have under 16mb will in fact take up 16mb of space? Even files that are only a few kb?
Yes. I know it sounds scary, but most small items are stored on the phone sdcard.

I didn't read the whole thread. But from what I saw, only 3 people had a problem. And at first he said he copied 1900 files and had corruption, then he states its a problem over 3000. I don't know if this is user error, or what. But thanks for the warning, Ill keep an eye out....... And if that guy was checking file by file for 1900 songs, that's some serious time, I call BS.

I unloaded my 64gb sd card, put it in the phone and it formatted it to exfat, I copied all my data back to the card and did a restore from mybackup pro, after the restore and reboot I then received a damaged sd card, i'm not sure what's going on, The only 2 options on windows is NTFS and exFat
Performance gain will be nominal. You're talking a phone here, not a database server dealing with heavy iOPS. I have a 64GB Class 10 in mine and performance could not be better. I also had a ***** of a time getting the card to register after I let my PC format it, had to, absolutely had to, let the device format it.
Note: I'm a heavy performance user who goes for maximum battery without overly sacrificing performance. Professionally, I build and configure SAN's for Exchange, SQL and vSphere. I make no claims to being a phone development god (thought about refreshing my skills there but frankly, don't have the time), BUT I'm also VERY good at what I do.

Had the same problem. I had no option but to let the phone format it. Delete the partition in windows and then you can format it. If you find another way though, let me know!
Sorry misread your post, I had the same error and had to let it reformat. Did you unplug it and put it into your PC? Were any corrective scans or anything done?
I removed everything back off the card, formatted it to fat32 and copied everything back to it, put it back in the phone and it's still saying it's damaged. Sucks, it's been in my EVO3D for a week now with no problems.
is the extra juice really worth the possibility of data corruption? Im not trying to be a wise guy, just really been wondering myself.

Well I must say now I'm worried. But I'm still going to test, I copy huge files to and from on a regular basis, if it saves me 3% in time each time, that is still worth it to me in the long run. I have very little patience, and all that time adds up.

Music to SD

/mnt/sdcard0 is your internal storage (emulated card)
/mnt/sdcard1 is your actual ext-storage
both are accessible via MTP (media mount) but your apps that store music ie spotify and google music will cache it on the internal storage aka sdcard0 and this creates a major problem that needs to be resolved.
samsung, moto have this problem.
only way to actually fix this is via unlocked bootloader to remove the internal partition that is not needed.
just my .02 on this. :cyclops:

I had read posts about trying to redirect google play music to cache on the external SD card by rooting and redirecting the internal mount point to the external card. This is over my head, but is that feasible with the RAZR M?
Any body been having this issue?? I've been trying to change my location foe downloading music to SD card instead of phone storage it used to be /storage/sdcard0/media/music but I changed it to storage/sdcard1/music and it keeps giving me that message in the little black box as shown in picture any suggestions as to why it does that?
Thanks

I was able to find the offline cache on my RAZR M using Storage Analyzer with root access. I found the files at /data/data/com.google.android.music.files/ which was a directory I could not find using other tools.
I was then successful setting up a link to my external SD card using directory bind.
WooHoo, 10+ GB of music on my phone.
No need for rooting. Download San disk memory zone for free. In my opinion the only memory manager app ever need for internal to SD transfers. Available on android play store

Hmmm, not sure how that app would have told me the location of the hidden Google Play music cache. I can see the cached MP3 files, but it doesn't tell me where the files are, which is what I needed to be able to create a link to the external SD card.
Look. DL root explorer. Go to mnt. Then SD card0 is internal. Find the file with the music. Then after verifying the music backup one time (or move it song by song) and long press the music download or MP3 download or whatever that file is called until the menu pops up. Either chose cut or move. You will only have one of these as they mean the same thing. Then scroll up to parent folder and click that and get Bach to mnt. Then go to SD card1. And you can either find a music file there and merge them (that would be an option when you clicked a file) or you could just move it to the root of your external sd card. Either way the files have been moved to off board storage. Done. Got it?

PS. Don't give a thought to the cache. That's totally different and I can tell you need to just forget about it for the time being. Get that file moved and I will tell you all about that file. (You can just delete it later tho or now.

Peep this. Go to academy and look for the ear buds with an orange flat wire. They like $8 after tax. Man I promise they so loud if you don't turn em down for a lil but at first you will throw up. I don't remember the name but they come in a clear plastic case with a black wrap with silver words. I stole like three of em and bought two.(yeah they cheap so they may break) they sound really good and loud. Like I said they less than $10. Ten bux gets you then and a burger. Academy. I used to build bikes and grills.

Can't access pictures or video

Tried to show my son some pictures today and my phone would not access some of my .jpg files or videos. Gallery indicates the file is there but won't open it. Strange thing is I have two S4's (one for work and the other is personal) and they are both doing the same thing. Some of the pictures were taken with the camera. All of them used to work.
Any idea what could cause this?

OK, this is getting worse. It only seems to affect pictures, but it is on both of my phones.
Luckily I have most of my pictures backed up on Dropbox. I tried copying pictures down from dropbox to restore my phone. I picked a directory and copied all of the pictures (about 80). About half of them came through OK, the other half are still not readable. I did this several times until I got the whole directory restored.
I then re-booted my phone, and the directory was EMPTY! !!
Need some advice and help please.

When I copied everything from my Dropbox account it all seemed to be there and viewable until I rebooted my phone then it was gone completely.

[Q] Screen mirroring without using an app? Or phone setting?

A couple days ago I shattered the screen on my s4, as well as the touchscreen, so it's useless. There are some pictures on there I need to recover but I can't get to them because they were hidden (no, not what you think lol). I cant download any apps to my phone nor enable the screen mirroring setting so I was wondering if there any way to find them in the filing system via my laptop or a program I can download to emulate my phone on my laptop. Thanks in advance.

Perhaps my post wasn't clear. On the Galaxy s4 you have the option to "hide" pictures, which puts them, for all intents and purposes, in a second, hidden gallery. This moves them to a .hide folder somewhere in the file system. I've tried to find them via USB but I cannot find the .hide folder.

Says there should be a '.hide' folder in the internal storage, then for some reason an 'island' folder where the images are (with a warning that 'island' may be different for you).
