Hey guys I was so impressed with my new snap 800 note 3
I pushed my old man to ditch his pos nexus 10 and get a 10.1 2014 asap it just came in literally 45min ago.
Are there any bounty threads rolling yet for 0X0 root on the US exynos 10.1 2014 edition yet? (Christ can they make the name any more longer and confusing FFS?)
Thanks! Seems like a great unit compared to the n10 I hope we can get more than 4 hrs battery. Ugh.. the n10 was a disaster if we get battery close to to note 3 this baby is a keeper.
Cheers!
There was a bounty thread for creating a root method with KNOX 0x0 and we had a developer, Beanstown, take on the challenge. However, his root method, while successful in rooting the device, trips the KNOX counter. He collected the $300+ bounty anyway, even though he only accomplished half of what the bounty was for, and effectively killed off the only incentive we had to offer for getting a full proof root from another, more capable developer.
He's an asset to the XDA community, I'm sure he has contributed a great deal to the Android customization scene, he did give us root and people were happy enough to contribute their pledge to him, but personally, I think it was a **** move on his part to collect it. As a man, if I didn't deliver on what's expected of me I would not have collected the $ or would have only taken half of it, seeing as I only accomplished half the goal.
I mean think about what that says to people considering buying this tablet, "Yeah, you can root it, but your $600 tablet is now completely void of warranty, good luck when something happens" That's not exactly gonna create enough interest from people who are into customizing their android devices, people who serve as a source of demand to get more developers working on this, so we're kind of stuck in a development limbo.
Anyways, it was before my time on here and people did with their money as they chose, can't fault them. However. I'd be happy to pledge $20 towards a real root method.

Yeah, I made a pledge for root and was disappointed to find that it tripped knox. I didn't specify 0x0 (since I didn't know much about knox prior to this) so I paid up. Definitely doesn't motivate me to pledge again on things I don't have a full understanding of but IF there is a full success I will donate again. I keep hoping that beans is still working on it and has every intent to finish what he started. As it stands, I don't care to take advantage of the root that I helped to fund.
I am VERY careful of who and what I send funds to, one, I'm not rich, and two, if I sent funds to every pledge that wanted it, I'd be broke.

About 2 weeks ago, one of his very last posts in this section of XDA was about how he was planning on returning the Note '14 and waiting for the 2nd generation Nexus. So who knows?
I think the best thing to do will be for us, as a community, to figure out ways to drum up developer support for this device in more ways then just a bounty. We currently have a couple of members who have reached out to Note III developers who have shown interest in creating Roms for the Note tablet. Some of us are trying to put together a custom recovery using an automated method, but so far it hasn't been successful and none of us are really that experienced in these things.
If we can drum up support from developers for recoveries, roms or roots, then eventually they will figure out a way to reverse the KNOX counter for everyone who rooted their device the Beanstown106 way as well. Because even if you're the luckiest person on the planet, got a zero fault device or you treat this tablet like it's a Rolls Royce, it's eventually going to run out of battery cycles just from charging the device every day. And that battery is going to need to be replaced. (Li-Ion batteries get around 300 cycles before serious degradation occurs, so expect it happening in the first year) We can't really leave these people out in the cold with a $600 tablet in their hands, especially people who have no idea what that KNOX counter does.
I wish I had the funds to just buy one for development, maybe we need to set up a permanent fund on XDA, that one could draw from if they could prove that they were deserving of it by meeting certain requirements. This asking funds for every device is getting to be too expensive.
HOLY S&!%!!!!!
In the Note 3's general forum they have a bounty going since mid October two find a way to reverse the KNOX counter and it's reached nearly $1200 and counting, yet not single person has been able to do it lmao. It's probably the most popular phone out right and has massive developer support behind it yet nobody can crack it even with a cool G on the line.
Regardless of the past, we need to get another bounty going for a full proof method because in the end it'll be the cheaper alternative.

If there is somebody who finds a way it shouldn't take so much time until this device will get a trick by that person or another who ports that trick. Both devices are similar as fas as I know, aren't they?

Note 3 has full proof root methods for all variations. Both kinds of custom recovery options, even for the international Note 3 that shares our CPU. Tons of Roms. And we're sitting here with nothing on all counts.
So, no.
Based on that, I would say it won't be easy.

I dunno dude. I'm not too concerned with the Note 3, all I know is they have infinitely more stuff and it ain't making its way over here.
Nothing from the exynos variation which should be VERY similar is making its way here.

At this moment the Note 3 has more stuff than the Note 10.1 2014, but that doesn't mean that our device won't have that stuff in nearly future. Now, the N3 is more popular than our.
I'm optimistic because the more progress on N3 means more progress for N10.1 2014 - I hope
For example, I won't do anything (even root) my device until KNOX has been bypassed (the hardware part). If it is bypassed on N3 devs for our device can port it somehow for us.

You're right. We'll just have to wait and keep our fingers crossed.
Reversing the efuse is going to be tough and will likley take more knowledge than most developers have. Efuses are a *field-programmable gate array*(FPGA) technology. Reversing the efuse will require an electrical or computer engineer. I happen to be a graduate student in Electrical and Computer engineering and have done extensive work with FPGA technology. Without knowing the software side of things and how the tablet is causing the re-configuration of the transistors, undoing it once it is done might be impossible without the use of specific tools only Samsung has. Reversing the fuse is totally possible, and I'm sure Samsung has the hardware to reset it.
I'll run this by a few of my software folks and see what they think. It's funny.. As a technology buff, working in the upper echelon of technology, it's amazing to me that non of my friends or coworkers root their phones, or even know what root is... Its crazy

Ok folks, I closed the thread to give chances to back away from the keyboard for awhile (or back away from the bottle), and think about what you're going to post.
Yes, I cleaned out the thread of some really useless and derogatory comments.
True, there were some valid points, unfortunately, I, nor anyone else will take the time to edit them amongst all the useless e-peen garbage that was included in them.
So if your post was deleted, it was because you did a “Reply to”, and junk was in the “quoted part”.
Clearly some folks think it's ok to bypass the “swear” filters, unfortunately we mods will get notified eventually. So if 'ya think yer bein smart........
I'm not gonna “bring out the ban hammer” at this time, but I would advise “some” people, to be careful of what they post, and to have a little respect for each other. We all have devices, and all want to make them better than what they are. We also make mistakes, sometimes foolish (I myself have, so I know how it is). However, that doesn't mean to one should go off on a rampage and grill users who have.
So I will ask you folks try and be civil to each other, and not behave like “trolls”, and not to reply to trollish comments as it only adds fuel to the fire, as if I have to come back and do a “clean-up in aisle 6” again, the outcome won't be so pretty. Use the “report post” function, and be the end of it.
As with “bounty”, I can say generally a method is developed eventually, so no need for bounties, although sometimes they serve a purpose. But generally a method gets exploited eventually.
One should never be in a hurry to brick their device.
Thread Re-opened.

Oh, and as far as "knox" you all might want to check with @Chainfire . I understand he knows more about it than anybody Seem to remember he came up with a method to re-set it on certain devices...... something to that effect..

Out of curiosity you a link for any info regarding any devices where this was reset? Personally don't care about Knox but I'm curious as hell as how it may have been done....And to what stopping from working on all devices as that's a decent motivation (the thousand plus bounty) to working on variants....although be almost that methodology be completely different between Snapdragon and Exynos chips....

If I am not mistaken, I came across it in the SGS III (international) forums. Seeing I am planning to upgrade to SGS III, I was checking root and development. Chainfire has CF Auto root, and also I remember seeing how they reset the knox counter (or bypassed it)

I had the GS3 international version and I don't remember there ever being a knox efuse like the newer devices. It did have a flash counter and Jorrit(chainfire) did have a method to reset that (Unless later firmwares implemented knox after I got rid of the device which seems like ages ago)

Yeah, you may be right. Perhaps it was the flash counter. Will see in another week when I get mine. (will be a giant step up from the original HTC Desire). Not to sure I'm keen on using Odin though Will feel like a n00b all over again!
However, recent "leaks" of firmware from Sammy have arrived "without" knox (according to recent Portal posts). Whether they incorporate it into the "official" releases remains to be seen though. One can only hope they've seen the errors of their ways and scrapped it.
I was forced to buy an s5 full price after my 2 year old s3 finally gave up life due to the stuck faulty power button. But I was there in the beginning of the verizon s3 days when there was no root method for it. The way around it was using an exekernel until it was finally figured out and root was achieved.
2 years later I'm back in the same boat with the same 2 companies hoping someone can work magic. I don't learn well. But I'm curious why this is not an option like it was with the s3, does it have to do with knox vs binary counter?
If I had better teachers or someone to learn from I'd learn to code and would help try and figure this out too, but I'm a dumb fuk noone wastes their time with so I'm stuck throwing bounty at people.
I am going to begin a bounty to all of our devs of $100 to whomever can get a working unlocked bootloader for the Verizon 4GLTE P605V Samsung Galaxy 10.1 2014 edition. It's complete nonsense that going as far back as far as April (the first post I found searching for this) that there isn't a solution.... If you own this tablet variant as well, please jump on board.
Most devs for the 10.1 2014 have moved to the pro version. So this may be really hard to get. if you look at the unlocked versions there is little to no support for them right now as well.

I don't really care about the S4, my Note 3 is already unlocked, and could care less about the S5 as well. What I AM concerned with is getting my 10.1 2014 Verizon edition unlocked so I can actually get TWRP on it an put on custom ROM's. For a forum filled with lots of experts and geniuses, no one seems to want to take any time or make any effort. I am literally begging! Using any version of Odin has failed trying to get TWRP on my tablet. All the ROMs I have looked at say to install that as a prerequisite. So what is a guy to do? Should I just put a round from my .45 through it and call it a day? I am outside the 14 day return window now with Verizon, so unless someone can give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong, then I am royally screwed..........

You are missing the point. Bootloaders are not a simple security hack. They are the proprietary coding that allows the device to boot. There is NO decompiling, sorting through code, figuring out the lock and then unlocking it. There needs to be an exploit to get in and change it. Which means there is a 99% chance the wrong exploit attempt will brick the device...an not the "brick" all these people talk about mistakenly on this site...a REAL brick...dead paperweight. Think that it is an issue with this sites "geniuses" not wanting to do it? Maybe you would understand better if you blindfolded yourself and tried to assemble a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle....only you get an electric shock with every wrong piece you play.
I mentioned the other devices not to see if you "care"...it is to let you know the same method is employed to lock those as your tablet and they are just as popular with the "geniuses" that genuinely want to unlock the bootloader. AND have large bounties on them.
As to what are you supposed to do? Research next time. Buy products from a carrier that does not lock down their devices or buy a device that is not a commercial push to the military and corporate so that Verizon wants it locked down tight for more sales and contracts. Or continue to hold your breath throwing this tantrum you seem to be doing. Or...I don't know...use the tablet as it was designed to be used when sold and seems to work fine for the millions of customers who know nothing of XDA or rooting.

I would have to say that in reading text, it is generally hard to understand the tone of the text. While I wasn't throwing a tantrum, the tone of your reply is pretty unmistakable. When someone comes here genuinely looking for help and assistance with a device, is it a general practice to publicly belittle and berate them? As to my bounty, I started off low to see if others would jump on board or not. As to my carrier, I have been with Verizon from day one, get a rather large corporate discount from them on devices and accessories, and have 6 lines through them, so why just to get this tablet to do what I want it to, would I change carriers? Every device that I have had in the 'smart'phone era has been Verizon, and someone has found a way to unlock them. So I apologize if I came of looking like a prick, as that was not at all my intention. I would gladly personally pay up to $100.00 if someone could help. It is very frustrating to only be able to do half of what I want to achieve with my tablet. I'm as far as I personally can go on it. If anyone was offended by my wording, again, I am sorry for that. BTW, I changed the avatar that was only taken offense to after my post. Have a happy Sunday Funday! I know I will as I am already on bloody Mary number 4 here.

Your phrase that asks if you should put a bullet into your tablet certainly sounded like a bit of a tantrum. Sorry if I somehow misconstrued that. Then also sounding like you were belittling XDA developers because they did not unlock the bootloader yet.. Sounded a bit entitled. There are devices years old that have never been unlocked. I have done my best to explain why there should never be a time limit or expectations of the bootloader ever being unlocked yet you also shot that down as selfishly exclaiming you did not care about those examples and were only concerned about what matters to you. Did I leave anything out? Sorry if I somehow misinterpreted any of that. Sounds like you need to start making a decision as to what is more important to you, your corporate discount or an unlocked bootloader. Have your bounty but I already explained older Verizon devices with the same locked bootloaders has stumped the security geniuses so far.
$100
$100.00
$150.00?
The devs were never really all that involved with this tablet. It is highly unlikely they will unlock the Verizon version unless they figure out the other Samsung products. Even if they would unlock the tablet you my not get any devs that are willing to port their Roms over to the Verizon version.

OK, I have a SM-P605v with a broken LCD (not the screen itself, but the display is discolored and not displaying correctly). It was previously Rooted and I have gotten screen emulators working when hooked up to my laptop. I would be willing to donate this to any Dev willing to work on the exploit. If there is a risk of bricking the device, then rest assured it's no biggie since the screen is bad on it. Please PM me if you are interested.

I just got a SM-P605 that is unlocked. Once I figure out where the kernal came from perhaps I can be of help here. I really want to get this thing rooted and connected with my carrier. I had had a SM-P600, but it was smashed and could not be repaired. That's why I bought this tablet. Otherwise this P605 is totally stock and runs like a very well behaved powerhouse should.

You know I really loved my SM-P600, but it was badly damaged and I don't know how or where to order in the left speaker, on/off switch from. So got really frustrated advanced ordered an SM-P605v instead and was able to get one that has an unlocked boatloader. I've not rooted it yet, or mounted TWRP on it. I may not root it though I'd like to. Even so, I'm looking into it and while, though I'm extremely happy with it,I may eventually root it.
I've explored a lot of options so far and none of them, so far, work for an SM-P605v running Android 5.1.1.
I'll get back with you about a week from now.
By the way, this tablet, and the SGN Pro are still much more powerful and capable than the Surface Pro or IPad Pro. This, even though they are getting a little older.
By the way,I spoke to a friend of mine who owns the large IPad Pro today. Apple hasn't optimised the Home screen yet, even after all these months. You'd think they'd have done better by their consumer base by now.
Even so, I'm so pleased with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1(2014), both with the SM-P600, and the SM-P605. Unless Samsung releases a Tab A that has an S Pen and 32 gigs memory, or releases a substantial upgrade to the SM-P600,SM-P605, and SM-P607, or puts out a new SGN in the series with 64 our 128gigs internal, I'm not open to trading my tablet in. It'll be over my cold, dead body.
This whole thing just died from no interest other than from me, huh?
Hey Guys 'n Gals
New Note 4 user here, had it about a week - Just wondering if there was any feedback on the reliability of them and what problem areas can be suggested to make sure work before I go root the thing?
I've been reading the last week about the Knox counter and it voiding the warranty when it inevitably trips during the root and believe there is no workaround as of yet?
I want to root and am familiar with the process as I did my Galaxy S1 and S3, but I waited for around a year before I did those - Unfortunately I got a little bit to used to it on my S3 and miss a lot of the features of a rooted phone :/
Trouble is I got my phone on contract and can't really afford to replace it if anything goes wrong with it (not yet anyways) so was hoping some real world users out there had any knowledge of any dangers I should be aware of.
So, my question in short is - Have there been many issues with the Note 4 that have required repairs and the like in any serious quantity?
I never had any problems with my S1 or S3 - Hoping the assurances from them can be passed on to the Note 4?
Thanks in advance for any advice and help that can be given
Umm...like just about every other piece of solid-state technology: pretty good. There's almost no moving parts to wear out. If it worked out of the box, it should be good for 3-5 years unless abused. Emphasis on that last part. >98% of phones that fail prematurely (and not including OBFs) did so as a result of user actions. Not defect.

Thanks -Yeah, I get that there are no moving parts and things but I don't tend to pay much attention to the Phone world as such, just when I need a new one LOL
Just browsing round the Net I came across an odd thread here and there that said that GPS wasn't working, and that the sound didn't work after so long using head phones - Random bits and pieces that didn't really cause me any real alarm but with it being a relatively new piece of kit I know that sometimes manufacturing defects can creep into products.
And, guess I just don't want to hurt my new piece of kit - Dotting i's, crossing t's before I take the chance is all
just a word of advice, my note 2 which i passed to the wife only last month decided to die (SDS) that phone is nearly 2 1/2. Luckly i never rooted and samsung have said they will repair it (even though its out of warrenty).
I would personally wait until more problems if any start to happen.

Thanks for that, interesting and good that Samsung are going to fix it
Out of interest, do you know what the problem is with it yet?
My friend had a Note 2 and had lots of problems in the early days of them, continually sending it back to Samsung etc - Got it fixed eventually but I don't think he was ever happy with how hot it got.
My Galaxy S1 is still going strong after 4+ years, my wife uses it for running and using as a GPS when she's doing her obstacle course races so it does take some abuse (it's in a waterproof case etc mind). My daughter is the proud owner of my recently retired S3 which is still going strong (asides from a battery that doesn't last) - I know Samsung stuff is *normally* reliable

Not defect.

Same as mentioned, It is Samsung and there are many spare parts for these phones.
I would be more worried if you had a SONY
just a quick reply, my note 2 has got a faulty (insane) eMMc chip which becomes corrupted over time, this has failed the phone. This problem has been well documented in the note 2 forums, and the fault came to light about 2-3 months after the phone went on sale if memory serves. Samsung did patch the firmware - but from what i have read and understood this was like shutting the barn door after the cattle had bolted, the damage is already done and the firmware just delayed the inevitable.
Personally im waiting for a few months to see if any of these faults appear on the note 4 before i root (if i decide to).
Rooting is personal and if you dont need it then i would say dont bother, the note 4 is a speedy, and versatile without the need of root, i run a couple of apps that wont work with root (now tv comes to mind), whilst these silly providers impose this i will keep my hands cuffed until i decide to cancel these services.
I'm guessing the chances of bootloader unlock are pretty slim. Chances for root maybe decent, but hard to say at this point in time.
The Verizon S6 was a little bit sad with the locked bootloader, but at least PingPong gave us root. Does anyone here know about PingPong and whether or not the creators of it will attempt to address root on the S7?
Maybe all the S5 owners that held out when the S6 released will have interest in the S7 and maybe we could get a bounty started for bootloader unlock. Or is the security so sound that it's not worth the effort because it's too hard to crack?
I already ordered the Verizon S7 Edge anyway, so I guess my fate is sealed.
Don't even count on it. If you're thinking about getting a Verizon model just assume it's locked for life.
If you care about rooting and unlocked bootloaders over hardware get a Nexus 6P. Consider ourselves lucky that the last few Nexus phones work on Verizon. If only Samsung had the balls to sale one universal unit running stock Android and unlocked bootloaders. I would kill for that phone.
It seems like it gets worse with each device Samsung releases. I do care about root, and custom roms are nice, but I like the Samsung hardware a lot, so I'm torn. If I had extra money, I'd get a Nexus 6P, but as it is, I got an S7 Edge for $192 spread out over 2 years if I so choose. That sexy hardware combined with a free $300 smart watch (Gear S2) for $8/mo versus Nexus 6P that I'd have to buy outright = tough choice, so I went with Samsung and am hoping it gets rooted. Until it gets root, I won't be able to use Tasker which affects my daily life, so I need to figure out an alternative to Tasker for what I'm using it for now. On the other hand, at least Samsung Pay will still work...quite a small and meaningless consolation.
The fact is, S6 got root which gives me hope that the S7 will, but I am okay without it....I guess. Man, I despise Samsung and Apple for this crap, but their hardware is so nice.
It's really not Samsung's fault, Verizon asked them too. It's usually not like that on T-mobile

This. If it weren't for Samsung pay, I would consider other phones. Samsung pay is seriously the killer feature in the US though.
Lets hope for the best, but I am guessing root only.
I can almost guarantee you that the S7 and Edge won't get even root. Many people don't care anymore as much as they used to because phones these days don't require root as much as they did before.
Honestly the only reason I would need it is to force uninstall all of the bloat, but we have Package Disabler for that which does almost the same thing except it doesn't free up the storage space.
Less than zero.
There will probably always be a root, just takes time and man power to do it.
Just like how Apple always tries to make their phone invulnerable to jailbreaking, but yet people always find a way.
True.. if there's enough intresting and a bounty I bet it could happen. Nothing is bullet proof. ...

Sorry to burst your bubble but the past 2 generations of Verizon Samsung phones have yet to receive root. It is not going to happen with the implementations put in by Google to verify the system upon booting. The note 5 never saw root, the s6 only shortly saw root on early shipping firmware, and the Note 4 never saw root after KitKat. Just letting you know so that you don't get your hopes up.
You will have to have an unlocked bootloader from here on out unless something huge happens.

Past 2? I am sorry but my Galaxy S6 Edge has root..
I've rooted every phone I had until the DT2 and now my s7e. since I can now disable bloat and it not show up any longer I don't really miss root. And with the SD card storage isn't a problem.

Sorry, forgot to mention that one when I mentioned the S6. They both got root on the shipped firmware, but after it was patched no phone after that has gotten root. The note 5, or the edge plus. I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just really upset about the situation of the root possibilities of all the new locked down phones. I really wanted a Note 5 but it was also said to be basically impossible by the community so it saved me time and money. I was just trying to do the same for others.

It is not impossible, just many people don't want to spend the time to root the Verizon or AT&T, why would they if they can easily root and mod the ones with unlocked bootloaders.
Look at Apple, for example, they try really hard to make their phones hard to jailbreak, but yet people find ways to do it.

Ya there doesn't seem to be much effort put into Samsung + Verizon devices anymore. I can see why, like you mentioned about locked bootloaders, but there are large swaths of users in the US that really don't have the option to get unlocked Samsungs. Like in my entire state, we have to get Verizon unless we want sub-par coverage, and then it's AT&T with locked bootloader, too.
I'll just keep my fingers crossed but am doing okay without root so far (about 14 hours in with my S7Edge).
If you're a betting man these are the odds I'll give you:
Root 1:10
Update to N before S8 release 1:500
Unlocked bootloader 1:9999999999
Any development 1:99999999999
If we do get root there will also likely be a patch issued to remove the exploit.
Get used 6.0.1 and bloatware.
Speaking of bloatware did you notice the two square inches in the notification shade dedicated to quick connect? It's unremoveable.
We should put up a bounty, I'd definitely be willing to donate!

The quick connect is removable from the notifcations, you just have to press the arrow and then edit to turn it off.

Two ways to remove it, dropdown your notifications and edit the quick toggles. The option to turn off is at the bottom.
You can also disable the quickconnect app as well.
