as many of you might have seen everyone who updated his phone via fota got stuck in recovery..why?...cant I update if my phone is rooted?...should I always wait for the flashable file?

Never OTA if modified. Period.

so how do I get the update if not with the official method

if you have custom recovery never ota
You can ota with root if you meet the following requirement:
1)you don't have any mods
2)you don't use xposed
3)you haven't removed bloat
4)you have not modified system partition in other words the system folder
5)and most importantly you do not have custom recovery, for ota to work you need the stock recovery to work

Yep, that's all I had to say, but if I posted in any of the ICS threads it would be buried. Dlpkgfile available HERE NOW!

Cheers luna ... just need a WW version
Noob question though ..... I am on a custom ROM. I have CWM recovery.
I thought I couldnt update OTA if my TF was rooted ? or is it that I have the custom recovery that prevents this ?
I can flash back to stock easily - its removing CWM and unrooting that looked to be the more techie issue.
With what you are saying is there an easy way, once I have reverted to stock ROM, to revert to stock recovery without losing root ? Or do i even need to revert to stock ROM ??
Can update if rooted, but need to be on a stock ROM and stock Recovery image in order to successfully install. Download the 8.2.3.5 US recovery file located here :http://theunlockr.com/2011/11/28/how-to-unroot-and-remove-cwm-recovery-on-asus-transformer/, flash it through CWM and you have now overwritten your CWM and gone back to stock. Ready to update from there. Cheers!
so what is the procedure to update? Rename it, put it in microsd root and reboot into recovery?
another question, i cannot root with nachoroot, so is it possible to root with 1-click root?

That might work, I don't know exactly because I got the FOTA pushed to my device and updated through the 'official' update process. I honestly have no idea how the dlpkgfile is even packaged, if it is CWM flashable or requires stock recovery etc., honestly my first time fooling with capturing the OTA files.
Ok I'm trying and I will tell u....
I don't care about root right now...

Do I understand correctly that I only have to do Step 7 of the tutorial? and then install ICS (regular update process)?
I am rooted and I have CWM (no custom ROM)
So first impressions luna? Might as well start a discussion to keep the post on top and visible.
Did you run Spark? If so how does it compare?
Positives negatvies
Yes I do realise that you have had it for like 12 seconds but first impressions are nice.

Unfortunately I never did get around to trying the latest Spark, I saw the complaints about touchscreen issues and decided it might be best to wait for Paul to work it out, but Asus finally got the upper hand on him!
Seems a treat, but I expected as you can see I've been running CM9 on my epic for about 3 weeks now. Much snappier, generic comments that have already been posted- but not explored completely yet, too busy helping others get their own ICS since the update came in to be selfish and sign off yet
Steven, I'm not sure which step 7 you are referring to but you will need a stock recovery in order to flash the file. CWM will flash files that have been repacked for CWM usually, and OTA updates install from the cache partition so CWM will not be able to install the OTA. CWM can flash it manually, I THINK (not sure if it needs to be repackaged for that to occur or not), but CWM will not install the OTA through the normal OTA process.

I was refering to step 7 on the Unlocker page you pointed to:
http://theunlockr.com/2011/11/28/how-to-unroot-and-remove-cwm-recovery-on-asus-transformer/
So in short only replace the recovery as explained in pojnt 7 (and 8) of that page and then do a regular system update to ICS.
No need to unroot??
Will this keep my apps and settings? I do have Titanium so I can do a backup and restore that way.
Thanks a lot for helping!!

Yes, your apps and data should remain intact, and that is correct, you only need to flash the recovery back to stock if you are already on a stock ROM. As of right now, only US and TW firmware versions are getting the OTA pushed to their device, but if you are not one of these you can manually flash to these stock ROMs via CWM if need be. But yes, if you are stock + root + CWM, you only need to flash over CWM back to stock. Root is fine to keep and all data will be saved (it is an official update, people would be irate if it wiped their data you know!)
Great stuff thanks again. I'n in Europe so I might need to wait for a bit but that is fine.
No problem. Ok guys, I've done a bunch of talking and answered quite a few PMs, and posted all my methods/experience with ICS so far, now, I'm going to go play for a while (it's 7am, and I've not been to bed, and I have to work at 4pm and my son will likely be up in an hour, so no sleep for me today, should have a well-rounded review by the time you see me again)

If you are SBK1 device you can flash CWM via NVFlash, use CWM to flash SU binary from ChainsDD (located HERE ) and then flash the stock recovery if you so choose to return to stock recovery (in case any patches or incremental updates come out you may need this if you want to stay stock ICS).
ONE MORE THING BEFORE I GO GUYS;
I just noticed that ICS brings a new recovery as well, so the update will overwrite your recovery, I assume it will do this if you figure out how to flash via CWM so be prepared for that. Any devs will want to work on removing the recovery blob from the patch file before releasing as a CWM flashable zip. My 2 cents. See you guys in a few hours/days, depending on how addicted I get to ICS.

unlock bootloader -> root + OTA updates?

Would it be possible to install OTA updates if I choose to root the phone?
From what I've read, this is definitely impossible if I flash custom recovery.
But what if I leave stock recovery? Do I just need to reroot after the OTA, or is there another method to update?
Thanks
On my Galaxy Nexus, I get around that by just booting Clockwork Recovery (fastboot boot recovery.img instead of fastboot flash recovery recovery.img). Then I flash the OTA, re-flash su and I'm good.
If you are rooted with no custom recovery, your phone will still accept the OTA. When you install the OTA, you lose root. You can use something like OTA Rootkeeper to keep root, or reroot after the fact.

If you have a custom recovery like "ClockworkMod, Twrp etc" then you can't get OTA's.. some say if you have Superuser you can't get OTA's either..
You would need to install a stock recovery and download the OTA file and flash it..
OTA updates don't happen that often.. when the phone first release you might see a couple to address certain issues.. or if the AOSP code changes you'll see a update..

On the Galaxy Nexus, you can update via OTA while rooted. Everything else must be stock. The update will usually break your root, but it's pretty simple enough to re-root on Nexi.

They send out OTAs whenever they update Android versions. For the GNex, I think I got 4 version updates since I bought it last June (4.0.4 -> 4.1 -> 4.1.1 -> 4.1.2 -> 4.2)

Waiting for the OTA update?

i know the flash images for 4.3 are available now but wouldnt it be easier to wait for the OTA update? and the process will be simpler? or am i missing something? Also if I have a custom kernel but stock rom all I need to do for the OTA update is go back to stock kernel correct?

You will need to be 100% stock to get the OTA the normal way, otherwise you'll have to flash it manually via adb sideload or a custom recovery

so you mean like No custom roms, custom kernels or root apps? or root or unlock bootloader?
100% stock means exactly that. You can leave the bootloader unlocked but the main system itself has to be exactly how it was brand new as the OTA patches the original files. If they're not there the OTA will fail

If i upgrade to 4.3 with the factory image am i still rooted? Can i still use my apps that require root lets says auto hide soft keys?
You can get OTA update even when you have root (assuming you haven't touched any system files), but you will lose root after the update. It's pretty easy to re-root though.

problem to update to 4.3 with TWRP installed

Hi guys. I have a small question and maybe a problem. I have Nexus 4 rooted with unlocked boot loader, and TWRP installed on it. And as I think with stock rom, because only done everything to root, but nothing else.
Now I have a problem: phone offering to update to 4.3. I press update. It updating and restarting, but after restart it loads TWRP. And what should I do next to finish update? Because I don't know how to make it finish updating with TWRP? What should I do with TWRP to do so? I will be very thankful for any help. Because twice was making update, but still on 4.2.2.
You need to flash the stock recovery because you can't update via OTA with a custom recovery.
You can actually OTA with TWRP.. The device should load into TWRP and complete the update. After the update you will lose TWRP and root

This is incorrect. The best way to update is download the ota zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848
Go to twrp recovery flash the ota zip then SU zip v1.51 reboot done. Now you got 4.3 with root and you won't lose your recovery

Thanks, your post above made me read that thread you linked and while it works, it's not a real OTA (notification from Google or OEMs), but let's not fall into semantics here, the thing is it works and does the job pretty much like a real OTA. Mina kernel does not work as it is built for 6.0.1. But the same TWRP works, and you can still root the phone. You have to systemless root though.
Hoping to build a nougat kernel that has root restrictions removed and such. I just have to wait for Samsung to release the kernel source, but that could take months, and I don't even know if they are going to release source or not.

Correct, once u flash a kernel, rom, or twrp, u are not able to receive ota cuz u have a device status of custom vs official. U can get ota s again if u flash the last stock firmware via odin first. Then go to check for updates. Voila. Nougat 7.1.1.

And if u do update, yes u can go back and forth between android versions

Go to play store, download updato, aka "updates for android." Search go SM-J700T. Download the most recent dated firmware. Copy to PC, unzip, load into ap slot Odin. It will fail unless u either wipe EVERYTHING in twrp beforehand, or while in Odin, tick the nanderase all option as well. After successful flash, and setup shows on the screen.don't set it up.pull battery, go to download mode, vol down home, power. Flash the latest twrp by ashyx. He has a new version from a couple months ago. Then let twrp boot up, go to format data type yes. If u want root, flash SuperSU 2.82 or magisk 15.3, then the encryption break zip, reboot. Now setup your phone.
