Nexus 7 first generation thinks headphones are plugged in. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I bought a second hand first generation nexus 7. Sound from the speakers was working fine, however, one channel of the headphone output was initially broken. To fix this I bought a replacement charger/audio flex and fitted it, and this is where the fun begins.
Headphone out works. The problem is, the speaker audio occasionally drops out, sometimes returning after a while. Having checked the speaker connection, I therorised that perhaps the nexus was thinking that the headphones were plugged in. To confirm this, I installed an app which displays a notification when the headphones are connected. Indeed, when the sound drops out, the tablet thinks the headphones are connected yet they are not. I stuck electrical tape over the edge of the speakers as shown in some youtube videos (the plastic can erode and short out on the case), but this did not fix the issue. I also note that the speaker output is fine if you disconnect the charging/headphone flex.
Having concluded that the replacement flex was broken, I sent it back and ordered a replacement. I put it in and... the same again?!? I can't believe it.
Here is the part I am using: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141216668642?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Is that correct?
Attached is a picture of the original part and the new part side by side. The top one is the original. They are identical in size, but some components differ slightly, e.g. the usb socket and the markings on the flex (e219454 vs. e219454GF).
Anyone know what is going on here? Cheers :good:

For the record, I tried fiddling with the edge connector pins (the ones exposed on the outside of the side of the case) just in case they were not making good contact and shorting something. No joy...

I have the same issue on my 1st gen Nexus 7 after replacing the same I/o assembly. Were you ever able to find a fix?
Thanks in advance

Same issue here, any solutions?

[Q] Help! Audio jack stopped working!

Hi,
So today I was watching a movie in bed and holding my transformer with 1 hand. The bezel (or thing that separates the screen from the sides) suddenly moved up so it was now disconnected from the screen. My headphones had stopped working. I pushed back on the screen/bezel area and it got back into place but now anything connected to the audio jack doesn't work properly. There is no notification that anything is connected another sound comes out of the tablet as well as the headphones. Please help, as I am going on a 12 hour flight in 2 days and really want it for movies.
Thanks
Do the sounds thought speaker still works? Do your headphones still working with other device?
yes and yes
sounds like the spring connector in the headphone socket might have bent, had the same problem but in reverse years ago on an xda exec a little plate that makes a contact when the headphones are inserted got jammed in the open headphone position so no phone speaker. Yours sounds as if the contact might have bent when your bezel loosened and is not making the contact when inserted. Looks like an Asus job. The contact is doglegged so that when the jack is in it closes the contact, if yours/has bent straight when the jack is in it still won't contact.
But then again could be wrong.
maybe clean ?

This happened to me too. After I mod my tablet to add 2.5mm barrel plug charger my speakers stopped and the audio jack worked in only one side. Then a few hours later after I pressed on the bezel in the same place as you the audio jack did not work in either side. I read about reboot the tablet to reset audio and tried but it did not work for me. I opened my tablet and unplugged my speakers from the board and the audio jack now works 100%. I have replacement speakers, so I will soon be reinstalling and testing the original speakers and my replacements and maybe get to the bottom of this problem.
So maybe a tablet reboot (off and on) will do same for you without opening. Maybe there is another trick to reset the audio, but I do not know. It may be something else, but I do not know. Good luck.
If you want to open and unplug & plug speakers you need a torq #5 to open the two screws. Put thumbs on screen and finger nails over edge and under bezel lip and push/pull gently - starting a one of the top corners. If you get hung try wiggling a small plastic tool under edge and try again, carefully. The speaker plug on mobo is small white socket mounted on board in bottom left. Careful to not void warranty.
Thanks
Thanks everyone for your replys but I have a couple other irreparable problems so I'm sending it back to amazon

S5 bottom mic problem after water damage

I got the charging port of my S5 wet by accident. I immediately took the battery out dried it for 24 hours etc. etc.
Now it seems to work fine, apart from the microphone.
I did some googling and discovered you can replace the charging board which includes the lower mic. So I ordered a replacement Samsung Galaxy S5 G900 USB Charging Dock Port Flex Cable + Mic & Sensors REV08A
I fitted without any problem, but I still have the same issue! I was pretty sure this would fix it as I replaces the whole microphone assembly.
I've downloaded a few hardware test apps and they cant detect any sound from the lower mic, only the top mic works (like when on speakerphone)
Any other suggestions? I suppose the problem must be with the mainboard?
Which hardware test app did you use to test the mics?
I tried a few, z-device test is one. (it only tests the lower mic).

Nothing wrong with my mics, but that app doesn't show much at all for the mic test either, have to shout really loudly constantly for about 10 seconds for it to show anything at all
Which other apps did you try?

Soldering the headphone jack

Hello people,
I've finally had enough with the headphone problems many have reported, the distorted sound and triggering voice commands. I've previously swapped the jack with a new one(had to buy a whole mid frame) and now it's started doing it again, about a month later(the original one lasted just as long).
The issue is that this phone is huge and when using it in my pocket with the headphones on, it moves that jack with every step. This wouldn't be a problem if the jack was soldered on or at least wired to the board, but instead it's just placed on top.
So I've decided I want to solder it on. I'm a bit scared as I've never soldered to a pcb board... And I might desolder other items. I'm going to hone my skills first on some other broken devices, but at this point I'm pretty sure I'll do it in the end.
Has anyone else here done this? Want to watch me possibly destroy this otherwise great phone? Heh.
Ty
Dude you're nuts. Just go get some Bluetooth headphones, it's 2016!! I literally haven't used my headphone jack more than 3-4 times in the 4 months I've owned this phone.
Also, I'm pretty sure the headphone jack isn't soldered in specifically so that if the jack moves around a little it won't cause damage to the board. This is common on most/all phones. Soldering it down would be a TERRIBLE idea. You will likely damage your phone.
Why didn't you just send it in for warranty repair?

Hi, I couldn't send it in because I unlocked it, which voided the manufacturer warranty. If I remember correctly on my old galaxy s4 it was plugged in with a cable, which was a much better solution. The reason my sound interrupts is because when it moves, it moves the pins on the board causing slight interruptions.
However the pins in the jack are long enough and soft enough that they would bend first instead of breaking the board.
And about Bluetooth headphones? I've bought 3 different sets, they either have huge controllers hanging and pulling on one side, or they are too big, or they're poor quality, I've spent more than I want to admit on different sets (see attachment).
So today I'm going to try and solder the jack, and throw this phone away if I break it and buy a small one, that doesn't put that much pressure on the jack in my pocket.
Stay tuned. I should take pictures.
No go
Well, it didn't work. I knew it would be hard to solder the little legs that where under the actual jack. Getting them all melted and touching before they cool down, without melting the plastic or the rubber around the jack was not possible in the end.
Only 2 of the 5 pads actually stuck together, and there was only a buzz coming from the headphones. I decided to open it again and remove the solder just in case something was shorted, I didn't want the sound chip to get toasted. My biggest mistake was leaving the glue on the jack, which stuck to the mid-frame. When I pulled that apart, the jack, with the two pads came with it.
I'm putting the pictures up if anyone wants to have a look at the mess, you can see in the first and second picture why my sound is interrupting: the pad is damaged from continuous friction.
The phone still works so I've lost nothing other than my time.
BTW, at the moment I'm using wired headphones to a Bluetooth adapter. Until they make smaller/lighter wireless headphones I'm stuck with this.
They got Bluetooth without the wire hanging thing that bugs ya (bugs me too) don't have a name or link right now but a quick Google search should pull them up

Yea, I saw Jordan Keyes review these ones. They are too much like having screws screwed in your ears. If they can get them smaller, and still have 2-3 hours battery, I'll be interested.
I am not sure how the LG Tone type of Bluetooth ear buds are any more intrusive than regular earbuds with a cord hanging down the side of your body! They definitely last a long time for me.

How about these
Use this instead, it's a taotronics tt-br05 Bluetooth wireless receiver, you can plug your wired headphones in it and use Bluetooth instead of the 3.5mm plug.
Has play/pause and volume/track change buttons. Also has a mic for calls.
Search in Amazon.

They only have 1 hour battery before you have to plug them in the little tube to charge again. The battery technology isn't there yet.

I have actually been using this
Good option, but it wasn't great sound quality.
Anyway, I've bought a second hand Xperia z5 compact and use that now. The moto x style has become a in house tablet.

Anyone else having problems with the 3.5 headphone jack?

Doesn't matter what I connect, it doesn't feel like it's every inserted completely and because of it I've been getting really irritated when the music stops.. Can I replace it and keep the same audio quality?
Or should I wait to trade it in?
Are you 100% sure that there is nothing stuck inside the port that is blocking a secure connection? Could be something pretty tiny even as it wouldn't take much to prevent the plug from clicking in completely
Yup, mine is the same. H918. I just take a little piece of the rubber off the plug in part and haven't had any problems since.
i faced this with my g3, if the headphones do not have a mic its a 2 connector and idk why but it makes teh phone think u hit the answer/call/play/pause button, just get a headset with a mic, problem soft or get bluetooth and dont sweat it at all

I'll try that, thanks
Pocket lint has done this to me several times. I put a little hook on a tooth pick and reached in. Every time I think no possible way, that's what it is.
You can also pull the cotton off a q tip and twist in there.
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
yup. my v20 started this with my car aux cable. activates google now constantly, stops music, any slight bump of the 3.5mm jack and im jacked.
Took phone apart cleaned with denatured alcohol and still the issue. The port is cheap and the connectors are not sufficently making contact with the aux end. Its a sh!tty quality part LG dumped on the phone so our quad dac experience would suck.. Just poor manufacturing is the issue imo
I have the same issue whenever I use a headset or plug without mic/buttons; Google Now keeps activating unless I position the cable just right, and it is extremely annoying. I also checked the circuit board when fixing my SD Card slot and noticed that the headphone jack is soldered on, so I wouldn't mess with that unless you have a lot of soldering experience under your belt.

teardown problem?

HI,
New to oneplus 5 forum.
I recently bought a used oneplus 5 with a broken screen.
I am reasonably familiar with replacing screens, and the odd modular parts of phones
So, replaced the screen and frame, put it back together, everything seemed good
Checked everything, all things seem to work, except for loudspeaker?
Headphone output works , but I get a clicking from the speaker.
Have tried another working speaker - same thing.
Have ordered another flex cable from motherboard to speaker in case thats the fault.
There are several contacts on the speaker and underlying module that appear to connect with the back case.
The back case has the headphone and usb charging port, and several electrical contact points.
So - does anyone know if the back case has to be clipped back into place to get the speaker working?
I am reluctant to try it just to see see because it is a pain in the xxss to get it off again without scratching my shiny new frame.
if anyone can enlighten me who has experience of this I would be most grateful.
pootler
YAAY!
t'was the motherboard cable
