second the z3 cybershot it's my take on samsungs k zoom i was unsure how thick it had to be untill i saw the k zoom
Many did not like the thin bezels saying it would be impossible to hold but, i had an idea for this i call virtual bezels the phone itself would use a JDI developed OLED panel with white magic, the beauty with oled is that when the screen shows black it's off, so my idea is simple to add dead space too the screen when you choose, for example flip the phone in landscape and you get a special amount of dead space of your choosing, since it's oled it would look exactly the same as a physical bezel as the screen would be off where the deadspace is, my idea is simple to have a intelligent virtual bezel that changes itself after your preference, in potrait the bezel could be very thin as you don't technically need bezel to hold a phone properly, but in landscape the black deadspace could be more so you can hold the phone properly, when you want to watch a movie having it standing in it's dock or something you could fill the entire screen with the movie, the dead space would be controlled by a seperate chip to avoid any glitches through android.
the screen itself would pretty much be edge to edge many did not like this one
and i agree it's not pretty, but it's the same exact phone as the one above, as you can see the sony logo is glowing the notification icons are next too it thats because thats part of the screen, if you don't like having it like this then simply open the settings menu drag a slider and adjust how much screen space you want, so think of this virtual bezel idea as the black classic android softkeys but without any buttons just a black border, since it's oled this black border would be completely off.
it is very hard to explain my virtual bezel idea without actually showing it, think of the xperia z1 for example magically extending it's screen across the bezels.
my second idea is a light stripe all around the phone, i want this light stripe to be very advanced to be able to show color gradient, i like flashing lights but i don't want them to ruin the design of the phone, so the idea is that this light stripe should replace the plastic frame the z series phones have for antenna reception when the light is off it would be completely invisible, ofcourse i am not sure if a light like this is even possible but it's an idea nonetheless.

is it just me or does the white text on this screen have red sticking out edges. I think I read somewhere about the pentile matrix causing it. Can someone confirm. It's a shame as the screen is great otherwise. Also when you have a white screen, it's got a green line on the left and a red on the right.

I can confirm this. I guess it'a downside to amoled screens... Oh well. Nothing is perfect.
None of that for me. Take yours into a store and compare side by side with another to see if yours is faulty.
Actually yes there is a tiny green strip down the left. i hadn't noticed that over the past two weeks!
I guess it is just a downside, but it's a pretty big one considering how samsung bit back at steve jobs fir saying the iphone screen is better. Jobs is right by the way ip4 is much crisper. Strange that none of the reviews would mention about these red things around the text. Every review I've read before buying said this screen was amazing clarity. Ib guess I must have better eyesight than these 40 something tech journalists!

Really? I mean... REALLY, does this bother you? How close do you guys hold the screen up to your eyes? I notice this easily at 6-8 inches but seriously, when do you EVER need to hold it that close?
I am trying to see the red edge you are taking about from the xda app. The texts on this application are white with black background and vice verser.
Trying as hard as I can I couldn't see them. Are you using any screen protector? Are you sure it is not the diffraction from the protector causing this effect?

Maybe because it does? I don't think there's a review that says the SGS screen is superior to the Iphone 4. They both have their positives and negatives. I looked at the ebooks that come with the SGS and I could easily read them without any problems or strain on the eyes.
People here are so picky. This doesn't work, that doesn't look right, they should have done this instead blah blah blah. I'm I using the same phone? cause I'm enjoying mine.
I can't understand why the hell people are going out of their way in such an amazing way to find stuff like this that NOBODY seems to notice even under heavy use.
No one complained about it in the nexus (nor about the green stripe/red stripe)
Yet, if you look for it- IT'S THERE. LIKE ON EVERY GODDAMN AMOLED SCREEN IN THE MARKET.
*This said, i can't see any red "outlines" on white text.
OP, you're too picky. This is probaly the most perfect non-iPhone screen money could buy now. Enjoy it.
If you look VEEEEEEERY closely, you can find a fair share if impurities in the iPhone screen as well. Mostly poor uniformity of back light dispertion (although a LED screen, it's FRAME led, not local dimming)
And some bleeding in bright shades of red.
Plus, the "blacks" are tinted purple.
All those are tpyical for IPS panels, but if you don't look for them under a magnifying glass (like people are doing here with the SGS), it's very unlikely you'll even notice.
Each technology has it's advantages and disadvantages. Currently all reviews agree unanimously- The SAMOLED screen on the SGS and the iPhone 4 retina display are the two best displays out there, without a definite first place between those two.
Listen I know some of you are quick to say I'm complaining and that I'm being too picky, but I'm only reporting what I noticed to be true on my phone. I posted to see if anyone else could see thee same thing. Not once didi mention I can't live with it, but for me I can see it and I'm suprised that in all the review they haven't mentioned about the red halo around entire text, your telling me that s not a fundamental thing? Come on, fir some people being promised the latest and greatest screen this might turn out to be issue.
Just to be clear, apart v ffrom this and a few small software issues,i love this phone, so please no flaming me for digging at the sgs.

red halo around the entire text. sounded like you have a defect on your hand. My Galaxy s have no such problem.
This is a problem with the pentile technology they use in the screen, the screen can't display white on each individual pixel, it needs to blend the colours from two pixels together to create white. This can make text quite jagged and make the white bleed slightly at the edges.
I too am a little surprised this wasn't picked up in review (although trusted reviews did pick this up) but I think this raises an important point, you need to make you're own mind up and not just rely on reviews. You wouldn't normally spend this type of money on anything thing else without using it yourself first, and its mainly the impatient ones who couldn't wait long enough to try it themselves first who then have the complaints, that's the risk you take! ps I didn't try it first, too impatient

It's not a downside to amoled screens, it's a downside to samsung's proprietary pentile matrix. Pentile is not inherent to AMOLED; every other AMOLED manufacturer besides Samsung use normal RGB sub pixels.

Not on the Cowon S9/J3, Zune HD, Sony XE-1, or LG EL9500. I've taken macro pictures of my S9's screen and it is RGB.
Ok, 90% of the amoled screens floating around on the market. happy?
The vast majority of amoled screens use RGBG.

I used "flashlight" application to look for the green & red lines on a white screen. I thought I might have seen the green line, but I couldn't even be sure to be honest, and there almost definitely wasn't a red line.
I looked at the text a little closer than I previously had and I felt I could see red within white text, however I didn't have a "red sticking out edges" problem. In every day use, and I use the screen primarily for reading internet articles and text messaging, I have never seen the colors within white text.
hmm it odd, f I launch the google home page in the browser, I can definitely see a Green line down the right hand side.
I wonder if my screen as some kind of alignment problem. I donlt even have to look that close to see it, it's a one pixel wide line down the left. and if I look to the bottom and right I see red pixels sticking out from the screen.
I realise that Pentile will make text a little jagged, but should it be this obvious?
I mean the clarity of text on this screen is very jagged compared to my Blackstone, even when I look very closely at that.
Logi
This is the best macro my camera can do at 100% crop.
Try taking the same picture and compare if your screen exhibit unacceptable differences, you may have a defective screen on your hand.

I can see what you're talking about, for me it's one green line down the left and a fainter red one down the right. But this is only on a white screen and when I look hard for it from about 10cm away - it's no big deal.
I’ve had the chance to use a Dvp for a while now and the following are my impressions of the device.
1) AMOLED screen: Not impressed. Colors were great, but pixilation is an issue for me. I can literally see pixels on this screen. HD2 has a larger screen with same resolution and I didn’t notice pixels like I noticed pixels on the Dvp.
2) Gorilla glass: Tough stuff! And I mean tough! I’ve already put it through its paces and tested it. Trust me; it’s very tough for the screen to get scratches. I’ve tried nails, knives, and even the floor. It was difficult for me to give it scratches especially with given pressure. This was amazing. The curvature has no effect on function at all. You really can’t feel its curved unless you’re in landscape mode – but even still, you can barely feel the curve. The curved glass is all aesthetics, I believe. It’s pretty I admit.
3) Rubber surroundings: this includes the rubber part that surrounds the top and bottom of the screen as well as around the keyboard. This rubber material is tough. It’s also difficult to scratch it. I tried to put pressure with my finger nails, but it didn’t leave a single mark. It does, however, attracts oils very fast!
4) Silver trimmings: These are cheap silver coated plastic. They scratch very easily and I mean VERY EASILY. They look great though, and are built to be as streamlined as possible. I did notice that my silver trimming wasn’t fully aligned with screen. I’ve already brought up this issue in another thread thinking it may be just this device but others are also report that their silver trimmings aren’t aligned as well. It could be a manufacturing defect due to the way the sliding mechanism is built.
5) Back plastic battery cover: what’s very unique about this back cover design is that it has actual engravings with tiny holes. Each one of those lines and dots are holes. Can dust get into those crevices over time? Yes and maybe. I think it’s very nicely design. It gives the feeling of something intriguing in the hands. The back cover is made of plastic. It doesn’t feel as cheap as the back cover of the HTC EVO or Incredible. But it isn’t as strong as the metal on the HD2. It’s rigid and isn’t really flexible. My only gripe about the back cover is that it didn’t fully cover the back entire. There was a gap along the side where I was able to see the SIM card slot’s metal plating underneath-Almost like the HD7’s gap where you can see the sim card even with the back cover on. – Nonetheless, this back cover fits like a perfect glove!
6) Keyboard: awesome keyboard. Great tactical feedback. I think I love it. It can be a little larger but its fine. The individual keys are actually tiny little islands if you look closely. I can tell that over time, dust will get under it. The keyboard isn’t like the HTC touch pro where its one long slab of plastic. I do wish that the keyboard would be more integrated with the OS more. Nothing happens if you’re just sliding it out and typing. You have to be somewhere where there’s text input for the keyboard to work. The keyboard’s backlight also turns off very quickly if you’re not typing. I wish it stayed on little longer. Registry tweaks anyone?
7) Screen Bleeds and LED buttons (back, start, and search): The screen will bleed when the LED lights are on. I’ve noticed bleeding from the following areas: Between the grooves where the G.glass meets the rubber near the top and bottom, groove between G.glass and silver trim of the left “back key” and right of the “search” key, and bleeds from bottom side of the earphone. With the LEDs, I wish they would be brighter! I can’t tell if they are on until I’m in complete darkness. And even then, the LEDs are very DIM- still useable though. Same thing with the keyboard, the LEDs don’t stay on for very long. I say about 5 secs? until they go off. Registry tweak anyone?
8) Camera and framing: Crappy camera, but what can you say, it’s a phone. Then again, my HD2 performed better. Someone here also mentioned that it’s very hard to get a sharp picture no matter how hard you are motionless. This is true. I rested the phone and took a picture. I have steady hands, but yet, I can’t seem to get a sharp image. It’s blurry for some reason. Weird. It’s a good camera for sending picture and uploading to facebook etc, but don’t think that it will chug-out pictures like an HD2. Another thing is framing: When you frame and take your pictures, you’ll see more after you’ve pressed the shutter button. It’s almost like the screen is the viewfinder, but the camera will capture more than what you see on the screen. It’s hard to explain this one. It could be an OS issue. Bright LED flash. No other comments on this one.
9) Power button, and camera button access: Since the phone slopes and curves into itself, it makes pressing these buttons a little difficult. Their placement isn’t the issue. It’s the accessibility; I feel like I have to work to get to them. They aren’t on a flat surface, but on a curved slopping surface which makes it hard. What do you guys think?
10) Speakers: Both earphone and bottom “stereo?” speakers are great. I say stereo because the
sound quality is amazing. It’s amazing compared to most smart phones today. They thump the device at high volumes, and retain clear audio that doesn’t distort. It would be nice if they placed another speaker behind that other mesh grill. Unfortunately it’s a microphone. So really, only the right side (underneath the “search” button) is the speaker.
11) Weight and size: in length, it’s slightly longer than the Hd2 with keyboard closed. In width, it’s just as wide as the Hd2 .Almost identical (HD2 has very little bezel around its screen). The rest of the phone’s size is obvious. In weight, it’s just a tad heavier than the HD2, though not by a lot. Definitely tolerable if you’ve owned the HD2 before and had no problems.
12) OS, speed and performance: two words…Buttery smooth! If this OS was a fully developed and matured OS like the iOS, then it would heavily rival the iOS right now in terms of speed and performance. I’ve never used a device that was so fluid in touch response!- This either beats the iphone4 or is equivalent to it. The Dvp really delivers on this aspect! This itself, could make the entire WP7 switch all worth the wild! Other have reported freezing issue. I’ve not to have that yet. *Knocks on wood.
13) Battery life: I’ve lasted an entire day surfing over wifi, texting, calling, and tinkering getting used to the device. That was some long lasting battery life.
14) Conclusion and Over all build: Amazing build over all. It’s stiff. It’s sturdy, and it feels like a $500 device. However, it does has imperfections which are noticeable only to those who are meticulous about their devices and will notice them when there’s backlight bleed, loose buttons or unaligned silver trimmings. Most people won’t notice this until it pointed out. See what I mean? Dvp is fast and responsive. This itself could make the $500 all worth the wild. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a DVP. This IS the WP7 device. It was meant for this OS.
The dell venue pro is a highly recommended device- if you can get pass the whole SHIPPING and ordering issues, which has been proved to be a painful experience with many users so far. Let me know what you guys are thinking.
I hope that this review has been helpful to you. The “thank you” button is below if you are generous. =)
I like this review, very informative and good to see that you did some testing.
Lol @ the fingernail testing, did you sharpen the nails first?
So are you keeping it?
Thanks, for this Review.
Great review there.. The one comment I would make about the camera is that for a phone coming out at the end of 2010 at this price the camera should be better. I used the HD7 for a bit and even with the pink hue of that one the camera on that phone is much better.. I hope this is something that Dell can address with updates and that it is not a hardware issue.

all the testing was done on a small scale so results aren't noticable if malignant. With the screen scratch test, after i knew pressure + scalpel didn't phase the screen (tested in the corner, of course), i went onto a large scale.
All other testing was done on a small scale but results should be indicative of a real situation.

Are you serious? I've never seen a weaker flash. On my other phones, I can take a picture inside a small bathroom with the door closed and the lights off, and the flash will light up the room bright enough for the picture to seem like it was taken with the lights on. With the DVP it looks like there's a faint candelight providing the ambient light.
very nice review. here are some comments:
I think the screen color is good enough. I never had phone with AMOLED screen, I compare it to samsung vibrant with super AMOLED, it about same.
the battery life is not great. I played with the phone for few hours with wifi on, use internet explorer, text, marketplace, the battery bar seem to fall from 100% to 75% in 2 hours.
is the grilla glass really tough? I dont think metal will not leave any mark on it. I dont want to risk it to try it.
they keyboard seem to be smaller than the on screen keyboard, I wanted this phone because of the keybord, this is first phone I tried with physical keyboard, when i actually the keyboard, the keys are squeezed together, it is better to take my finger nail to pin on it.
I have not seen and LED on the phone. where are they?
speaker is loud enough. I like that.
the WP7 OS interface is good, but I think it is flexible as old windows mobile, cannot install cabs, can only install apps from marketplace, no file explorer, task manager, no compass, no gps software.
everything else is good.

the LEDs are the sensor buttons itself. (Back, start, and search). It's super DIM and you'd probably only notice it in complete darkness.
it would be cool to see a registry tweak to have the Windows logo/button flash and act as a notification LED when a new email/SMS/VM has arrived.

you are full of ****. Your is from OmniVision model nV5642.
All this information is on yourpicture properties.
not only that, you've edited your images in photoshop cs4.
Get the outta here!

Actually, the info on the one photo says it was take with an HD7.
I only used photoshop to resize the image . . . . so there is an OmniVision in my dell? What?
Here is another no compression this time . . . still using the first dell phones . . .
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/786/wp000116.jpg
Looks like the photo is legit unless the OP mod'd the Exif. My DVP also says OmniVision with the same model #.
There has never been an issue with daylight pictures. They actually look pretty good. It's the low-light pictures that require a flash that have been problematic. The flash on this camera is just flat-out the weakest I've ever seen on a smart phone.
It's possible that it's just a poor design as opposed to a defective component. Check any other phone, and you'll see sort of a yellow "lens" with concentric circles that I believe serves to intensify the LED flash. The DVP, for some reason, lacks this lens. The LED is covered by a flat piece of clear plastic with some "grating" pattern painted onto it.

I have this annoying yellow tint on my S4's screen, but disappears when the phone is tilted over 45 degrees. Is this faulty ? Shall I return it ? Or is there a way I can fix the gamma through an app without rooting the phone ?
Brightness set on full
Auto-tone, Auto-brightness disabled
Screen settings set as standard

I have this too, interested if this is a defect or just the colour tone of the amoled on the gs4
I have the S2 and it's blue compared to my display on computer, and I don't even notice it unless I put it against the computer display like you did.
Maybe try other display calibration, I hear you can change them.
Ok, been doing some google research on this -
There's always going to be a slight yellow tint to the particular amoled screen used in the GS4. However, to reduce the effect, set your screen mode to MOVIE.
Movie mode provides the best colour accuracy and also white point of the available choices. I can confirm this is the case having just spent a few minutes comparing colour charts to my girlfriend's very well-calibrated iphone 5.
So I would set it to MOVIE. The whites still won't be IPS display white, but then IPS can't touch the beautiful blacks on amoled. Horses for courses. Hope this helps.
@paddlyaz can you provide sources of where you got this info ? -- Edit : I just tried it, all that did was make the display washed off..Yellow tint still visible
It may LOOK washed out to you - but this is an AMOLED display, which is naturally very colour saturated.
If you compare the gs4 to an iphone 5 like I did just now, you'll see that even in Movie mode, the colours are a little MORE saturated than even the iphone 5 has to offer. The tint is a side-effect of this. IPS displays like the iphone may offer truer whites but amoled displays like the gs4 destroy them in terms of saturation and black levels.
It all depends on what you prefer on a phone.
In terms of the GS4, some people find the 'dynamic' and 'standard' modes vibrant and eye-pleasing - but they're not at all accurate and will exaggerated, innaccurate representations of your photos, videos etc. I have one photo of me in a yellow jumper (fashion mistake I know). When I have it on 'standard' it looks like I just came back from a two week holiday in Chernobyl. In movie mode, it looks exactly how it looks in real-life (i.e. still disgusting but accurate).
Here are a couple of links that describe it more:
http://www.gsmarena.com/displaymate_tests_galaxy_s4_screen_gives_it_the_thumbs_up-news-5928.php
http://gizmodo.com/5995376/galaxy-s-iv-display-shoot+out-how-does-it-compare
I wish I have another camera to show you the difference between my iPhone and S4 ... The iPhone's screen is bright white compared to the yellow tint on my S4. If this is a "feature" then it's not really efficient now is it =\
Maybe there is a way I can manually edit the gamma, this should fix the problem I guess. Or just exchange it for another one.
did you read ANY of my post?!
It's the trade off you pay for having perfect black levels and saturated colours.
The only way you're ever going to see perfect whites is if you get an iphone/htc one - e.g. an IPS display.
But then you're going to be stuck with 'blacks' that are actually grey. And that SUCKS.
People have differing opinions on which trade-off they'd rather have. Personally I'll take a slightly 'warmer' screen in return for having deep, inky blacks.
Hmm I see, so the display type is the reason why the yellow tint appears eh ? Interesting, thanks for the links too, going to check them out.
all screens will be slightly different from each other - but yes, amoled screens will almost always have either a slight YELLOW tint, or a slight BLUE tint - in other words, a slight exaggeration of one particular tone. If you have the time, do a google search and you'll see this was a common 'issue' flagged up on both the gs3 and gs2.
Your best bet is to do the following:
-set screen mode to MOVIE
-disable 'auto adjust screen tone'
-disable auto brightness.
You will never EVER see perfect whites on an amoled screen, and anyone who tells you they have them is lying out of their arse. Most reviews for the GS4 and also in the articles I linked you state that the GS4 is the most accurate amoled screen so far though.
If still disappointed, your best bet is the iphone5/htc one/nexus 4 etc
I think having an exaggerated blue tone is better than a yellow tone, in my own opinion.
Anyone else having this issue ?
I noticed this playing around with the S4 in the store. Still, much better than the S3 white point.
bad yellow tint
Hi everyone,
I received my s4 last week and found it yellowish as well. I have read everything regarding the screen yellow tint and the fact that it's because of the type of screen. I was going to give up but my girlfriend got one today as well and the comparison is very clear: her whites are so much better!
I have tried to take photos of them, and it looks greenish on the shots but you can see the difference. FYI the screen are both using the same settings: auto brightness off, brightness at the maximum, both screen mode in adapt display (I have tried the movie mode without noticing a change).
Mine is on the right if you couldn't see. You can clearly see the difference in the colour and the quality of the screen. I also noticed that the viewing angle are way worse on mine, the phone takes a greenish colour.
Finally I have very strong smearing/ghosting as soon as the screen background is black. For example when I am in the settings, if I scroll up and down, the thin lines separating the sections actually disappear whilst the menu scrolls. The thicker separator get a purple line until the scolling stops. Once again, the smearing on my girlfriend's phone is existant but much less strong. The thin separators are still visible even while the phone is scrolling.
I am definitely bringing it back to the store tomorrow. I am very disappointed with the screen even though the phone is great. I wouldn't change for a One, just for a good one.

I had the same yellow tint on screen and tried a few different firmwares thinking maybe its a software issue but nothing fixed it.
Picked up a new s4 last night and this one is perfect. The thing I noticed is the new one is assenbled in Vietnam and the old one
was assembled in China. Over all the build quality on the new one feels much better along with audio quality.
Maybe a quality control issues in some factories
Cheers

You'll see it when you pull the battery, there should be a sticker there.
I am located in Toronto and we dont have any samsung stores here
so i actually bought another one from this dealer i found on kijiji.
The new one was sealed and its from Hong Kong (but assembled in Vietnam)
Cheers

I looked at mine and it says made in Vietnam... But I would agree to say that there is a problem with quality control overall. My guess is that they need to produce as much as possible to avoid any shortage. I had the same problem with my Note 1 and could be bothered to change it, this time I won't let it go.
I will keep you posted.

I had to go to another branch and thankfully they had a model with a white tone screen. I compared it there and they did indeed see the yellow-tone in my phone. I am getting a refund soon, it's not really worth all this trouble i'm fed up of the customer service experience with Samsung.
hi first off i spoke with an admin and was told that it's fine to post my ideas.
So i thought i'd share my concept,
I made a thread a few months ago that got alot of negative feedback. I then made a thread showing my first ideas of concept but it wasn't in the right section, So i thought i'd post it here. Since then i have started making my own concept pictures of what i want the xperia z successor to look like.

the xperia z as i have mentiond before is a master piece and i don't want sony to steer away from this, Being square minimalistic phone. The xperia z is basically my dream phone but i want some improvements so thats why i decided to make my own.
My own design idea would involve a sony developed oled screen, Stereo front speakers, Sony logo at the side not the front, Xperia logo much less sticking out placed in the corner. The camera in these pictures is just a placeholder. The onscreen menu buttons would be hidable with an easy swipe and fully customizable, Such as changing size icons placement (bottom top left or right) color, Since it's a oled screen you won't see that the buttons are part of the screen itself, So you can do alot with that like having a full keypad and a smaller screen to work on when for example in phone mode.
i also thought of a aluminium design instead of glass but i don't want it to be textured like the one in these pictures i want a solid matte black backside with no texture on it
lastly a xperia tablet z padfone concept that let's you dock the phone in a xperia tablet z battery/screen thats ofcourse also waterproof like the phone (i know aluminium might not work for a waterproof phone but it's just ideas)
then comes my "crazy" ideas that would be a tiny screen at the side of the phone instead of the sony logo showing for example the time or a extra oled slipout screen that would act as a gamepad just like the xperia play but instead of an actual pad just an extra screen
good job buddy
To be honest I find the speaker grills hideous. The back as well, an all aluminium casing wouldn't be nice I guess, at least not in matte. Just my opinion, though. And placing the Sony logo on the side would be awkward. The only thing I'd like to see on my XZ is the LED notification light of the ZL. But keep trying different stuff, everybody got their own taste. And as long you enjoy creating new concepts, keep doing so, regardless of what others might say or think.

what kind of speaker grills would you prefer (i was thinking of swapping places with them so the bottom one is at the top and top one is at the bottom) as for the sony logo i think it would look nice at the side
and a completely black aluminium back like the htc one would also be nice in my opinion
this is an older concept i did
Good !
Now put sony Logo on bottom Grill of Speaker and make it like its Glowing when Phone on,and also make this Sony logo the Home Button, what do you think?
Xenone Flash on Back of the Phone.

could you remake your design in the same square shape as the z and zl
then have extra thin bezels like the zl or thinner with stereo front speakers
here is my compact mode feature you drag the onscreen menu buttons out and it reveals a full sized keypad that stays untill you drag it down to onscreen buttons size
drag it further and hide it all completely
Needs branding on the front or back, a plain front is too iPhoneish, although my perfect device would be the same width and height dimensions of the 4S as a 5" screen is just a tad too big, because depending what you're doing you need both hands to use it.

+1. What I'd like to see is an illuminated Sony logo, similar to my HX Bravia, but you could have it on the Phone so the front looks plain (the design would probably lead to a slight ghosting of the logo) until you turn on the screen.

That doesn't look bad, similar to the display on the MW600? But that render for me highlights why you need frontal branding, imo it looks like it could be any old Japanese import. Here's my tweak of your render...

i would add the sony logo but i honestly want it to be empty at the front with really thin bezels it being that much squared is abit too much though
i prefer it to how i made it very thin bezel and a big screen
though add the sony logo
original z is simply the most pretty smartphone i ever seen
design is absolutely perfect
the only minor things i would like to change are those ''trap'' for waterproof stuff
actually, adding an physical and designed button for camera would be nice and avoid any trap

I've been following the z2 eagerly, ever since the first leak and i had a fear that it it no longer symmetrical, i have done alot of analyzing of pictures and videos and it to me seems like the top bezel is EVER SO SLIGHTLY thicker than the bottom meaning theres no symmetry.
I have a ocd like obsession with design and symmetry, which is why i choose the z series since the first z, it also to me sadly seeme the z2 has been more rounded than the z1 which to me is a slight dissapointment.
Second off it seems both the back glass and the metal frame has gotten a bluish hue, from what i have seen i liked the z1's gun metal grey frame i don't understand why they changed it infact more black would be nice too, other videos show it in a more premium like silver which i like alot so it is hard to judge as many videos look different.
A positive thing is that it seems they got rid of that ugly plastic strip inside the metal frame that the z1 had, it ruined the design for that phone in my opinion and i adore the design of my z1 just hated that plastic.
other than these microscopic worries the phone seems to be my absolute dream phone inside and out.
I think its the SONY branding, sensors, camera and the black stripe of the speaker bar that gives the impression of a greater bezel up top.
Can't really tell you.
if you're really obsessed with symmetry, maybe you should bring a ruler when you about to buy it later

oh this is not what i wanted to know due to my obsession
and i am ocd about EVERYTHING i spent hours yesterday looking up pictures and videos comparing them to eachother to get the right look of the frame some pictures show it with a dark like blue which is ok other show it with a purple silver like hue which to me is a little on the girly side but i need to see myself before i judge the phone is so perfect that i am nitpicking the heck out of it
the other small tiny worry is that it seems they wen't back to the blue like black glass like the original z
i liked the blue like frame on the original z so chances are i'll like z2 aswell
but WHY would they touch the already perfect z1 design they only needed to add the thinner bezels speakers and screen and get rid of that plastic the design was perfect as it was
if they even dare putting XPERIA in big letters at the front on their next flagship then i won't even bother even trying to consider that it would entirely damage the phone beyond repair for me
the z1 was so perfect but i guess i can't expect them to mae a phone after my taste the omnibalance design was almost that
edit:it all makes sense now they only reduced the bezel at the bottom not the top
which means the top bezel is the same thickness as z1
it all makes sense now

I read that the top bezel has to be that size to fit the camera module (camera module is too large to fit behind the LCD and keep the phone thin). So it makes sense that they can't shrink it. Good investigating!
Why are we even talking about this subject? If the bezel was bigger on one side..... who cares?

The OP? What is the purpose of your post? OP clearly said he's obsessed with this. I answered the poll out of memory but now I see it, it really is a tiny bit out of symmetry. I will possibly do my own analysis.
To you, OP. The edges still have the plastic, its just in perfect alignment with the metal so that the curvature is perfect. This was one of my favorite improvements in the phone design.
PS. I suggest meditation and relaxation techniques for your ocd.
