Red edges to text - Galaxy S I9000 General

is it just me or does the white text on this screen have red sticking out edges. I think I read somewhere about the pentile matrix causing it. Can someone confirm. It's a shame as the screen is great otherwise. Also when you have a white screen, it's got a green line on the left and a red on the right.

I can confirm this. I guess it'a downside to amoled screens... Oh well. Nothing is perfect.

None of that for me. Take yours into a store and compare side by side with another to see if yours is faulty.

Actually yes there is a tiny green strip down the left. i hadn't noticed that over the past two weeks!

I guess it is just a downside, but it's a pretty big one considering how samsung bit back at steve jobs fir saying the iphone screen is better. Jobs is right by the way ip4 is much crisper. Strange that none of the reviews would mention about these red things around the text. Every review I've read before buying said this screen was amazing clarity. Ib guess I must have better eyesight than these 40 something tech journalists!

Really? I mean... REALLY, does this bother you? How close do you guys hold the screen up to your eyes? I notice this easily at 6-8 inches but seriously, when do you EVER need to hold it that close?

I am trying to see the red edge you are taking about from the xda app. The texts on this application are white with black background and vice verser.
Trying as hard as I can I couldn't see them. Are you using any screen protector? Are you sure it is not the diffraction from the protector causing this effect?

Maybe because it does? I don't think there's a review that says the SGS screen is superior to the Iphone 4. They both have their positives and negatives. I looked at the ebooks that come with the SGS and I could easily read them without any problems or strain on the eyes.
People here are so picky. This doesn't work, that doesn't look right, they should have done this instead blah blah blah. I'm I using the same phone? cause I'm enjoying mine.

I can't understand why the hell people are going out of their way in such an amazing way to find stuff like this that NOBODY seems to notice even under heavy use.
No one complained about it in the nexus (nor about the green stripe/red stripe)
Yet, if you look for it- IT'S THERE. LIKE ON EVERY GODDAMN AMOLED SCREEN IN THE MARKET.
*This said, i can't see any red "outlines" on white text.

OP, you're too picky. This is probaly the most perfect non-iPhone screen money could buy now. Enjoy it.

If you look VEEEEEEERY closely, you can find a fair share if impurities in the iPhone screen as well. Mostly poor uniformity of back light dispertion (although a LED screen, it's FRAME led, not local dimming)
And some bleeding in bright shades of red.
Plus, the "blacks" are tinted purple.
All those are tpyical for IPS panels, but if you don't look for them under a magnifying glass (like people are doing here with the SGS), it's very unlikely you'll even notice.
Each technology has it's advantages and disadvantages. Currently all reviews agree unanimously- The SAMOLED screen on the SGS and the iPhone 4 retina display are the two best displays out there, without a definite first place between those two.

Listen I know some of you are quick to say I'm complaining and that I'm being too picky, but I'm only reporting what I noticed to be true on my phone. I posted to see if anyone else could see thee same thing. Not once didi mention I can't live with it, but for me I can see it and I'm suprised that in all the review they haven't mentioned about the red halo around entire text, your telling me that s not a fundamental thing? Come on, fir some people being promised the latest and greatest screen this might turn out to be issue.
Just to be clear, apart v ffrom this and a few small software issues,i love this phone, so please no flaming me for digging at the sgs.

red halo around the entire text. sounded like you have a defect on your hand. My Galaxy s have no such problem.

This is a problem with the pentile technology they use in the screen, the screen can't display white on each individual pixel, it needs to blend the colours from two pixels together to create white. This can make text quite jagged and make the white bleed slightly at the edges.
I too am a little surprised this wasn't picked up in review (although trusted reviews did pick this up) but I think this raises an important point, you need to make you're own mind up and not just rely on reviews. You wouldn't normally spend this type of money on anything thing else without using it yourself first, and its mainly the impatient ones who couldn't wait long enough to try it themselves first who then have the complaints, that's the risk you take! ps I didn't try it first, too impatient

It's not a downside to amoled screens, it's a downside to samsung's proprietary pentile matrix. Pentile is not inherent to AMOLED; every other AMOLED manufacturer besides Samsung use normal RGB sub pixels.

Not on the Cowon S9/J3, Zune HD, Sony XE-1, or LG EL9500. I've taken macro pictures of my S9's screen and it is RGB.

Ok, 90% of the amoled screens floating around on the market. happy?
The vast majority of amoled screens use RGBG.

I used "flashlight" application to look for the green & red lines on a white screen. I thought I might have seen the green line, but I couldn't even be sure to be honest, and there almost definitely wasn't a red line.
I looked at the text a little closer than I previously had and I felt I could see red within white text, however I didn't have a "red sticking out edges" problem. In every day use, and I use the screen primarily for reading internet articles and text messaging, I have never seen the colors within white text.

hmm it odd, f I launch the google home page in the browser, I can definitely see a Green line down the right hand side.
I wonder if my screen as some kind of alignment problem. I donlt even have to look that close to see it, it's a one pixel wide line down the left. and if I look to the bottom and right I see red pixels sticking out from the screen.
I realise that Pentile will make text a little jagged, but should it be this obvious?
I mean the clarity of text on this screen is very jagged compared to my Blackstone, even when I look very closely at that.
Logi

This is the best macro my camera can do at 100% crop.
Try taking the same picture and compare if your screen exhibit unacceptable differences, you may have a defective screen on your hand.

I can see what you're talking about, for me it's one green line down the left and a fainter red one down the right. But this is only on a white screen and when I look hard for it from about 10cm away - it's no big deal.

Leo does have a visible matrix spoiling the screen

I had asked about this in a previous thread.
but the consensus was that what we were seeing was most likely a screen protector.
Well it really is a visiible matrix built into the screen.
Its a pity that HTC didn't get this right as on such a large device the screen being decent is one of the main selling points.

and
and from the mobile review site (lengthy review about the HD2)
Of course, the phone is not without its minuses. Normally touch screen phones if they do have a grid have an invisible one, the iPhone, for example, it hardly can be seen, however, HD2 grid is visible to the naked eye, especially if you should disable the screen as you can see the grid, sometimes it can be seen even when the screen turned on with content in the background. I can not say that it is totally a critical thing, but the fact remains that it is unpleasant.
Yes it has a very slight matrix but the pictures make it look worse than it really is.
I just received my WWE version HD2 and I must say it is an AWESOME device!!!!

it has already been repeating complaints about this. I feel one thing funny is that those of you who are concerning about the visible dots, are you guys having in you own mind keep fighting with the fact that HTC is a capacitive screen and it should not have dots like iphone which doesn't, and you guys just don't feel it is proper to see a capacitive screen with dots just because iphone manage to have their very first capacitive screen without visible dots! The funny thing is, just before the existence of HD2, any of the HTC phones have the same bloody dots on them, Touch HD has the same old dots, but I've just never been bother to realize the existence of the dots, because even though they are visible in naked eyes like HD2, but not intrusive at all, in fact, no one will actually realize or affected by the dots in normal day by day usage, unless we really hold the phone at an angle with good lightings that just good enough to shine the dots out, but why should we bother to do that??????
My question is, are you one of the very first owner of HD2? Have you already got a HD2 in hand? The photos that you guys been trying to show and complained in the post are the same old photos with the HD2 taken in an angle with kinda intense lighting, maybe not really strong lighting but just right amount to emphasize the existence of the dots in the screen. And it is the photographs and the exposure of the photos that make the dots much more visible than it should in real world basis.
If you have already got the HD2 and really can't accept the fact that dots can be visible in naked eyes (but I doubt I will bother to look hard to find the dots), then I strongly believe to those who think that the dots should not be in HD2, then these group of people should not even get any of the touch screen devices as most of the devices have dots easily detected with naked eyes. What is a big deal really? I have yet found a good reviewers so far to really comment about the dots at all.
I have a Touch HD and there are no dots on the screen.
I've also checked on line and I can't find one pic of a HD with matrix dots on the screen.
only HD2 comes back in any searches.
I like HTC and love this community but I'm no fan boy and can therefore state that the screen on the HD2 is flawed.
Just a sad fact.
but I guess as already stated in other threads all mobiles have their minus points and this is just another one of those minuses that affect the HD2.
I wasn't mentioning it to moan.
I was mentioning it to clear up the fact that it was not a screen protector as previously mentioned it really is visible on the screen.
People should know what to expect from the device. The more information potential buys have about a device the better.

I got mine from smart mobile gadgets. http://www.smggsm.com/ He had a few listed on ebay but I think they are gone.
how is the screen flawed? If it needs these dots to operate then so be it, just because they're using different tech than, let's say, the iphone it's not flawed...
they're not visibile when the screen is on, right? so that aint no big deal for me.
According to reviews the are sometimes visible when the phone is on.
I'll still be moving up from HD to HD2 so it won't bother me too much.
I was just posting for clarity.
I got my HD2 this morning and have been using it all day. There is no dots problem.
I will repeat that again: There is no dots problem.
By this I mean, I have been using the device as one normally would and have seen no dots. I did have one close look to try and spot them but couldn't.
So any worrying about this is nit-picking about a problem you're very unlikely to ever notice in everyday use.
HTC Touch HD has the exact same dots too...100%. I know mine Touch HD has them

Agreed....
Been using this device for hours now, you can't see the dots. You have to turn it off and hold it an angle to a strong light to see them at all, and even then it's bloody faint. Not an issue.
I've tried really, REALLY hard, and no amount of light on the screen, or angling, or different backlights (or with it off even), or anything makes any dots visible on my screen. Is there something wrong with my HD2?
Just kidding. Of course there's not, but I can't see any dots at all, ever.
Obviously a production issue that varies from device to device. Pretty crap really.
OK, just got it. Before first run, under strong light and good angel, the matrix is indeed visible. However, now the screen got a bit dirty after few touches and I am not able to spot these dots anymore, even if it's off. This problem does not exist.
All that negative whining (do you people even own a HD2 already?)...
I'm looking very hard for dots on my HD2. I give up, no dots.
Dont trust pics online unless you know the exact circumstances these were taken under. I only noticed the dots by chance when I was looking at the HD2 from an odd angle with light coming flat from the side. They are invisible in a normal daylight setting, not nearly as visible as the Touch HD's matrix. Even in the reference pictures, you can never see all of them on the whole screen, showing how very narrow the visible angle really is.
Complain once the device is in your hands. But I doubt anyone will.
my god you can just about see them if you try... some people need to get a life if this is all they can moan about
Well, I can't see any dots on my at all, under any light. So definately not an issue for me.

Seen couple of HD2's now. Either on or off, the pixels photographed are
extremely hard to see.
The HD2 when turned on is a beauty, backlight and contrast are superb, and when off its a magnificent looking black mirror. Even up close.

Got mine yesterday and i never noticed a matrix.
After reading this thread i tried to spot the matrix on my screen. I can only see it when the backlight is off and i focus reall hard.
When its on, i really cant see it...
So, as previously stated. Problem does not Exist.

More bright, more tint vs less bright, less tint

Okay, everyone pretty much knows no two SAMOLED screens are the same. I recently bought a second Nexus S (because I kept hearing people say it has "amazing" battery life whereas I was getting nothing better than my Vibrant) and decided to keep my first one (I will return it later) to compare. The second NS definitely has a slightly brighter screen, but it also has a much more apparent purple tint. The first one has a slightly less bright screen but the purple tint is also very minimal, hardly noticeable unless one is looking for it.
Any suggestions on which one I should keep?
P.S. Both phones batteries behave similar so I guess everyone's definition of "amazing" is my definition of poor.
i personally hated the purple tint. if you dont mind the 'unnoticeable unless pointed out' defect, go for the one with the lower brightness. also, check your whites on both phones because mine had a problem displaying true white.
second phone definitely has "purplish" whites.
My personal preference is to have more accurate colors. If the white isn't white, it's not acceptable for me. I'd go for the less bright one, as long as it's bright enough.
Mine has a blue-ish tint when it's white... really annoying. Also there's banding when I swipe down the notification bar (the dark grey background... lots of odd colored lines). That and my oleophobic coating is wearing off, gonna exchange in a few days. I really hope I get one with a warmer tint so the white looks more white... I don't care if it's slightly less bright, it's too bright as it is right now anyway.
EDIT: Actually I just tried screen calibration under cyanogen rendering effects... using the N1 cool setting makes it a tad warmer, whites look white now, but it's SLIGHTLY less bright than before. Whatever, better colors, I like it for now until I exchange.

just for you info, the blue-ish white is the actuall true white . its the better screen than the purplish white. and once you comapre them both head to head, you are gona kiss your phone.
i am not aware of your other issues but if they are annoying you, then just exchange the phone.
god knows how many weeks i searched for cool blue-ish white for my galaxy S and then iphone 4. i hate the warm yellow /purple-ish color from my heart >_< " its a friggin defect "

This is how your NS should look in your screen while in the clock homescreen . If it looks any different, then its not right. Usually there's a purplish tint in the bottom tabbed icons on the lowest bright settings. You'll want to find one thats closest to this display

After doing the test mentioned above (Clock -> hit the brightness setting on the top right corner), I notice that the lower buttons are purple/pink tint.
Does that indicate a defective display? Also, after a few seconds, it dims even more, and the entire screen has a purple/pink tint.
Seems like some super poor quality control if there are huge variances in SAMOLED display tech coming out of Samsung... =[

purple = defective. bad screen
cool blue = good screen.
the end of the day = personal taste. but compare a purple screen to cool blue screen when you set the brightness to the highest on a white background. the difference is night and day
Gah, I knew there was something horribly wrong with the purple.
This is my 2nd unit and I'm not sure if I want to exchange it and take another risk of getting a faulty unit.
My first unit had a faulty back button and this one has a loose volume rocker (not too concerned about), and just found out that the screen is defective.
Now that I think of it however, I'm rarely on low brightness and high brightness.

good luck thinking about it before you go to sleep and you actually sleep.
and if you did, you will have nightmares about it
As I mentioned before, I'm not sure if this really considered a defect in the eyes of samsung because I've yet to see one displayed like the the 2 photos I've provided. I know this because of the inconsistencies I've personally seen with the N1 screens myself, and certain batches of N1 would have varying degrees of the purplish tint, some worse than others. It stills baffles me how they let this bleed over into their NS lines. My NS still has the issue but out of all the NS I've seen so far I've lucked up on the better out of the other evils.

Please stop whining about Ink Marks/Blotches on SAMOLED display

Been a lurker here in xda-devs even before i got my s2 last july 2011, Am about to have my actual s3 in about 12 hours from now. It seems the Ink mark/blotches issue is getting out of hand and some individuals are even opting to have their unit replaced/serviced because of the said issue. So its about time I step up and DID my own investigation about this issue:
Test Setup:
Canon 60D DSLR
Canon 50mm 1.4 USM lens
Galaxy S2 (SAMOLED)
Iphone 4 (LED - Just for comparison)
so lets get to the point:

so the dreaded ink marks/blotches on screen scandal? i dont think so
because in Normal Usage, you cant even see those blotches
comparison with Iphone 4:
additional note: I used my S2 in posting this because my s3 will be arriving in a few hours. reserving the first three reply threads just to confirm ( repeat this test with the s3)
Bottom Line: Stop complaining about it, you wont see it in normal useage. thats all.
Important discovery: using this long shutter method also uncovers screen burn of my 11 month old S2 (upper part of the screen where time is) a good discovery heheh
Test Setup:
at last someone who knows what he's saying and a proof at it...i remembered a dude here who loved to whine too much about screen displays, but when asked about proofs and stuff, kaput...brave one mate!
I had a screen burn in and an ink mark on my Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 and never really paid attention to it. I'm a phone owl who uses phone at night all the time. This problem doesn't really bother me. Yes, it's there but who cares

Nice effect with the long exposure. Try it on black with the iphone?
I know it is called screen BURN IN, but the noticible view of the notification bar isn't necesarry a burn in. Plasma TVs have this as well, it isn't a burn in but rather a ghostly remain of the previous image that is slowly fading.
Try opening a black picture with white lines for 20min, then take the picture again, it might show the black lines instead of the notification bar.
You might, MAYBE, brake the myth about amoled burn in. How cool would that be

My congrats to you sir.
If people find it irritating they will complain.
I have a couple of ink marks on my unit, I could put my dslr to use and grab a shot but the truth is I cant be bothered to do so.
My point is the problem does exist on the S3, however as stated above you dont see it during normal use so I'ma keep my unit.
I've never seen those on my gs2. I have a 4.5 inch one with the dreaded streaks, and it shows up on EVERYTHING, even on max brightness. That is a bigger concern. Hope the pentile gs3 doesnt have it. They are like lines on an old vhs tape, you know when you have to change the tracking to try and remove.
There's no use trying to be judgmental about people's complaints. Half the posts in threads with the smallest issue (camera jingly noise, warm phone, not perfect white) will tell the OP to return the phone. I just assume everyone on here is an asshole, including you!
cripes i love the attitude of people here...we have screen issues in the note threads and most of them uberly whine and complain and talk crap...but the ones who stuck it out are now reaping the benefits...honestly peeps...the problem is or may be there but it can be mended...lets wait for the actual s3 tests
The thing is that this problem exists since SGS1 days. Passing through the note, gnexus, etc. So you know that this problem is gonna be on the SGS3.
I have the ink marks too, i have a horizontal line about 0.5 CM long on the upperside of the screen.
In normal situation you can't see it, to see it you have to be looking right to that line in darkness watching a black image. I do that about 5 minutes before i go to sleep.
This is a non-issue for me. The problem is to the people who can see it under any light situation, i can understand them.
But if you are taking a picture in a complete dark ennviroment to find spots. Well, it's better to leave it there.....
@OP Im pleased for you that all of your marks are small and unnoticeable. Unfortunately, that is not the case for me... I have a large one right in the centre of the screen, visible without a DSLR.
And for the record. I can't see my marks either on high brightness like you used in your test. Try watching a film at night with the lights out, something with dark scenes like Tron. That's the real would situation i'm unhappy about.
I don't see why this issue shouldn't be discussed by people affected by it. Just my two cents.
Some people can and do see the spots and marks in normal use, and the fact is the quality of AMOLED screens and their durability varies a lot. This is what people are concerned about, don't generalize and say there's no problem.
Wondered how long it'd take for the complaints police to arrive here.
Agreed. Makes me laugh how the OP has basically set up a thread to whine about other people complaining. Even though some of then have legitimate reasons.
I think he was just bored because his S3 hadn't arrived yet. Ended up performing inaccurate tests on his S2 to pass the time.

i guess the point of the OP is valid somewhat for the reasons that some people here complain too much about screen problems and do nothing about it even if some able members suggest solutions...as said if you have a warranty and have noticeable screen issues then by God use that consumer right...and i hope you provide us with an accurate screen test of phones so as we may know what should be done...

Lcd issue? Backlight on, small streaks and spots

So I was watching a youtube video tonight and part of the screen was black and I see these thick, kind of discolored lines, just a shade darker than the color of the backlight. I was like ok, just be the Youtube video, their cam was dirty whatever. Then I thought back a few days ago when I quickly noticed the same thing and put it off as nothing. Well I further researched it and found a completely black image on my sd card and displayed it at full brightness with the lights off and I found an annoying, yet not crutial, defect (maybe defect). It appears as though glue or something is on the underside of the lcd blocking light from coming through. I can barely find it if any light is displayed on the screen, but this dark video just made it seem so prominent. I wonder if anyone else has this issue or if it is infact a defect. I found it by viewing a dark image at medium brightness in a dark room. Putting brightness at 100% does make it a bit more prominent. I mean I could live with it I guess but it is extremely annoying to find something so stupid on such a great new phone. I wonder if it is a common issue and I ask you fellow gs3 owners to take a look at yours and tell me if it is just me. I have attached a photo I took with my dslr. The colors are kind of looking overdone because I had to bump my ISO up to like 6400 to even get a picture of it because it is so dark and I didn't want to run outside to grab the tripod. You should get the idea. The picture makes it look a lot worse than it really is. I have looked at the screen and I see no discolorations when the screen is off and I see nothing of that pattern while the screen is off anywhere on the lcd, but I couldn't find my super bright flashlight. What a day!

Yeah I notice this in the dark when watching a YouTube video. Its apparently a samoled issue and something I never noticed on samoled + screen on sgs2. Its very common and have seen a few threads about it. The good news is that you only really see it in a pitch black room when using the phone on a dark screen. I've never noticed it durng the day

Thanks for that. Now I know its not just me. You really settled my nerves, I was about the be pissed. The screen is beautiful beside that. It is just when it is pitch dark and I am looking at something black, otherwise, if there is probably 25% of anything else that is lit on the screen I probably won't see it. I guess I just caught it on one of those rare occasions when I am using my phone in the pitch dark.
Do you happen to know what those threads were called? I am having trouble wording the issue exactly lol
Nooo that is top much. Yes all galaxies have that issue but I think yours is too much. Exchange it i would say
Its just like this, apparently called "ink marks" Last picture in the op here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658601
Tbh I really only notice in landscape and not in portrait and the only ones I see are the ones on the left and the dot on the right if I do see them. I'd hate to take it back to get one with its own unique set of the same marks. Plus I rooted it and I'm not quite sure if the flash counter clicked , damn verizon
Finally I'm not the only one. It only happens with video and it doesn't matter out you play YouTube app browser or videos you have saved. And try recording and the play back is bloody red skill over the place. Best buy associates were freaking out with my old phone. Over had the gs3 replaced 3 times. And third times the charm. When life gives you lemons hope your within the 14 day trail period.

Oh and no fix apparently according to best buy its a internal defect so hopefully anyone and everyone else has time to exchange.

I thought the same thing until a week ago when watching something in the complete dark. For those that think their phone is perfect you'd have to check under the same circumstances to know for sure. A dark room and playing videos. I noticed it especially on netfix. I started a video and before the movie starts it goes to a black screen and thats when I first noticed. I do wonder if its all phones or if only a few of us have this defect

This is a defective samoled. While the glue blotches exist in nearly all displays, yours are especially bad. The fact that you can record them and actually see them while playing videos is the deciding factor here.
For example, I can see those too - but only in complete darkness and while the brightness is at max - any kind of video or soft keys wipe out those blemishes. In other words, those blotches should be invisible under any usage conditions. Otherwise, the quality control has passed a lemon, which is clearly your case.
Exchange that phone for a new one.
Like I said, I if there is anything on the screen I can't see it. I have the reason it looks do prominent in the pics is that I boosted iso and it exposed for the baclight. I had to try really really hard to get a picture of what was going on there
yes. i have the exact same problem. thinking of getting it replaced today.
heres what my looked like:
made it in paint
The black ink thing is a common issue but there has to be some extent to which it's too much. I usually don't notice it and I can forget about it but for those times I do, it is quite the let down. I'll probably take it to Sprint this coming week and see what can be done.
My screen...not the best picture but at least it shows the blobs. I could care less about the black marks towards the top of the image. It's just the ones on the bottom that bother me.

Ahh yours is much like mine. I have tbh, and I tried finding it today during the day and no lights on with brightness maxed and I could not. I think I am going to stop stressing about it as it is only visible in very limited situations. I thank you guys for helping me out with this and really settling my nerves to know I didn't just get a bad one and that it is quite a common issue with different variations.

i have to check mine now but either way if almost all units have it you may return it and get one that is worse

Yellow tint

Hello,
I just noticed that when i tilt the screen the bottom will slowly tint, espeicially when the colour white is displayed. White will turn into a smudgy grey/yellow. The top half of the screen is still unchanged.
Can anybody relate? This is slightly annoying.

Fleischmann
same
Hi,
Same here.
This displaycolor changed extremly like the position to look at it.
So its normal. For this price not acceptable in my mind.
Mine is okay whichever side i tilt it
Hi,
on my SGP611, I can also clearly notice that. I find it extremely annoying, because it's the worst when I'm looking orthogonal onto the screen. The lower half of the display (in portrait mode) tends to be a little gray/yellow tinted. This is mostly visible when reading or browsing the web, when you have a white or light gray background. On colored image it's not that much visible, would be ok for me. Also the poor viewing angles wouldn't bother me too much, if at least the color/white reproduction would be homogeneous across the whole display, when looking directly orthogonal at it. But it even fails on that. When I scroll a text page on white background from top to bottom, it looks ok at the top of the screen and then, as I scroll down it turns yellow more and more. Although, if I am tilting the tablet back a little, so that I am looking mostly from the front, the effect is less noticeable. But that is not the preferred way to hold that tab for me. I have mine for several days now and it really annoys me that much....I can't believe that wasn't mentioned in any of the reviews or in the forums before. Especially on a high priced device like this. I was already starting to believe that I've gone crazy.... 8) So I'm very glad you pointed that out. I am probably returning that thing, I've bought it for mainly reading and surfing the web, but It just hurts my eyes too much. That's a shame, as all other aspects of the device are really great and almost perfect. Maybe it's just some devices that are having the issue but the ones that I have looked at in two other stores tend to have the sames issue.
Regards,
rodi
No Problem here. I have the 16GB wifi version. No matter how i tilt the device, white remains white. Of course it gets darker the more i tilt, but no yellow or any other color is noticable at all. Maybe that means that you have defective devices and should contact your reseller about an exchange. As rodi has already mentione, no rewiew mentioned this so far, which backs up my theory of you having just bad luck.
Cheers
Chris
Glad to hear, that I'm not the only one with this problem and also that some of you don't have it. I will try to contact sony support next week.
Apart from the screen issue this thing is just perfect.
I just received my sgp612 and have the same issue. Thought my eyes were deceiving me but yes even in settings it's noticeable at the bottom half of the screen. It is annoying. I had a similar problem on my galaxy tab 3 8.0. I returned it back to amazon and got a replacement only to find out it had the same problem. Needless to say I returned that one also because it drove me crazy. Shame this has the same effect because I really want to keep this tablet.
This was the first thing I noticed after powering on the device this morning, instantly visible smudge along the bottom half of the display. This is not something I could live with so I'll likely return for another unit and try my luck...
Does anyone believe this yellow tint could be a result of glue between the LCD and glass? I know this issue was reported on various iPhone/ipad models, the Oppo Fond 7a and the Oneplus One. In all cases it was glue that was blamed. Has anyone noticed a drop in yellow with time or does anyone have a device without yellow tint?

Is there any way to add a poll to this thread? I'd be interested to see how many people (if any) have a tint free display...

I would also be interested in knowing this. I will be returning mine which is a bummer because I really like this tablet. I can't keep it knowing the yellow tint is there esp. after paying a premium price.

Yea same here, I'll be calling the retailer next week to arrange a refund. I popped into my local electrical store yesterday to test one of the display models and it also had yellow tint. I think my £375 would be better spent elsewhere! Question is what alternative do I go for...

Sad thing is my Sony Scr-28 white cover will be arriving today . Gonna be a tough decision on what to buy because outside of the yellow tint issue this is a fantastic tablet.

Yea I have the black style cover, I'll porbably just shift it on ebay.
I agree that, bar the dispaly, this is an exceptionally nice piece of kit. Though, to be honest there are more display issues than jsut the yellow tint which are giving me some grief. The display's contrast drops quickly at shallow viewing angles and there is a very noticable rainbow effect when viewing the display off centre too. I have used several Sony devices in the past and every time is this display which I like the least. Also the lack of a bootloader exploit for root is frustrating, I'm starting to notice how much I relied on adbock and the xposed framework.
Unfortunately I don't know enough about display technology to know exactly what is causing this yellow tint but I have heard of uncurred glue being the blame for other devices with similar faults. I would love to find out the reason!

Sounds like there is some light at the end of the tunnel...
yellow tint issue still exist on sony new product? i have a xperia zl . i thought sony has solved this issue for the new phone.
I just got my replacement Z3TC from John Lewis and the yellow tint is still visible along the bottom edge. I think I'll be returning this one for a refund instead of another replacement.
Hi.
I just got my SGP611 and didn't notice any yellow tint.
Can someone post picture for reference?
Photo
Today I had time to make a photo of the screen. I let it display a comic strip, because it was easier to notice than with a plain white test image. When you compare the white of the bottom box with the one of the top box you can easily see the difference. I also cut out a small bit from the top and bottom and put it side by side.

For me it's very annyoing but I will keep the tablet because there is currently no alternative in the 8" tablet segment. Maybe we should contact sony about the issue?
I wouldn't say it's very easy to notice the difference. First I didn't even understand where it was.
It's more like a faint tint.
Maybe mine also have it then, will check later and update after I've checked it more thoroughly
This tablet is really amazing, I love it much more than the Z2 tablet.
I checked now as well on a comic strip, I guess there's some slight less white on the bottom of the tablet (right side when in landscape) but it's so subtle so it's really hard to notice on anything other than pure white.
I guess some screens have a stronger tint than others. I clearly remember Z1 had this issue and for my first Z1 it was pretty strong. My Z Ultra didn't have a noticeable amount, same with Z2, my Z3 seems fine as well.
But there's nothing to do about it, all phones have it. I've been with Samsung up to Note 3 and all my phones from them had yellow tint.
