Nexus Screen looks washed out like a LCD with backlight

I noticed that the blacks on my screen have a strong purple hue... especially when the brightness is turned all the way down. Looks like a bad LCD with too much brightness or backlighting. I thought this was normal for oled since I had never had one. But my friend got a Nexus as well and his blacks look... well, Black.
I thought it was a hardware problem but it only seems to affect certain blacks, like the Live wallpaper and the power control widget. Or the clock app when you hit the dim button.
Screens like Settings and the boot screen look normal. If I turn the brightness all the way up it is less noticeable but definitely still there.
Anybody else have this issue? It seems like a software problem more than a hardware issue since it doesn't happen all the time.
I have now updated to the newest release (2/2/10) and the problem persists

I do not see a purple hue; however, I have noticed that different apps can have wierd display problems. I thought for sure something was wrong with the corners of my screen since text would get cut off or have lines through them.
However, it was only in certain applications. Try having your friend get the same apps as you then make sure all your brightness and screen setting match. Then look at the same app side by side. If it is that different then I would call HTC and see what they say.

Yep, tried the same apps on his phone, they look normal on his but have purple hue on mine. The boot screen, settings, and some others look normal.
Right now I am running a rooted but stock ROM, but the colour problem was there since I got the phone.
The blacks look black in the bootloader and the recovery but once the desktop loads it adds the weird hue to the blacks.
It is especially noticeable in pictures with a lot of dark colours.

I've not noticed any issue like you describe with mine (stock and various other ROMs).
If it's different from your friend's nexus, then I guess you must have a hardware issue (although it may not be unique - I've heard other reports of the same thing).
I'd suggest sending it back to HTC to have them repair it.

If you turn the brightness all the way down do the blacks glow purple? --->

I have a similar situation. I had no problem with the display on my nexus one, UNTIL my girlfriend got one too a week later. When I compare them side by side, the whites on her phone (like the background of Android Market) look much whiter than on mine, which have a yellowish-cast. This is with same brightness settings of course (full-brightness). The colors on her phone just "look" better, compared to mine.
Not really related, but she seems to get MUCH better battery life on her phone too. I'm probably going to try to get a warranty replacement from HTC at some point, but I am glad to hear that I am not the only one experiencing these variations in the AMOLED displays on this phone.
I will add, that I have not noticed a purpleish cast to black areas on the screen on my phone, so maybe there are multiple problems possible with the color casting on these phones.

Actually I think mine has better whites and is a bit brighter than my friends and I always thought his had a bit of yellow tinge.... does hers get a washed out black when the brightness is turned all the way down?

When your brightness is down you WILL get a strong purple or reddish cast in blacks. This is normal for OLED displays. If you dont like it, shut off the automatic brightness and keep it at around 25-30%. The screen looks amazing at normal brightness. But ALL OLED displays have this side effect when brightness is low.

Just compared both of ours side by side with brightness down all the way. I would not say that the blacks on her phone have any more of a purpleish tint than mine, they look acceptably dark to me. Hmmm that is definitely interesting that yours is brighter and your friend's is more yellow.

Thanks, and I would have agreed with you until I saw another Nexus next to mine and dropped both to the lowest setting, my turned purple, his stayed nice and black with proper contrast.
I wanted to see if it was unique, universal, or mixed as to how many people have this issue.
I would start a poll if i knew how. Maybe someone can help me out with that ?

mine behaves the same way as yours, I always thought that this was typical of oled displays but after reading this thread I'm not sure anymore... Yep, that is exactly how mine looks on low brightness. Notice the purple hue?
And the contacts are a good example... mine look light grey/purple my friends nexus looks just grey, no purple tinge at all.

Strange.... are you going to ask for a replacement? I would but... I'm from italy so it wouldn't be so easy... could you please keep us updated about this thing?

Mine looks nothing like that, with the brightness down all the way everything is still the proper color and black is black. I would return the phone if mine looked like that, it surely seems defective to me.

I think I agree, just didn't want to start the battle if it was 'normal'.
Thanks all for your input, I will update when/if I attempt to get it replaced.
Maybe someone will figure out a proper relock first just to make thing easier

Red edges to text

is it just me or does the white text on this screen have red sticking out edges. I think I read somewhere about the pentile matrix causing it. Can someone confirm. It's a shame as the screen is great otherwise. Also when you have a white screen, it's got a green line on the left and a red on the right.

None of that for me. Take yours into a store and compare side by side with another to see if yours is faulty.

Actually yes there is a tiny green strip down the left. i hadn't noticed that over the past two weeks!

I guess it is just a downside, but it's a pretty big one considering how samsung bit back at steve jobs fir saying the iphone screen is better. Jobs is right by the way ip4 is much crisper. Strange that none of the reviews would mention about these red things around the text. Every review I've read before buying said this screen was amazing clarity. Ib guess I must have better eyesight than these 40 something tech journalists!

Really? I mean... REALLY, does this bother you? How close do you guys hold the screen up to your eyes? I notice this easily at 6-8 inches but seriously, when do you EVER need to hold it that close?

I am trying to see the red edge you are taking about from the xda app. The texts on this application are white with black background and vice verser.
Trying as hard as I can I couldn't see them. Are you using any screen protector? Are you sure it is not the diffraction from the protector causing this effect?

Maybe because it does? I don't think there's a review that says the SGS screen is superior to the Iphone 4. They both have their positives and negatives. I looked at the ebooks that come with the SGS and I could easily read them without any problems or strain on the eyes.
People here are so picky. This doesn't work, that doesn't look right, they should have done this instead blah blah blah. I'm I using the same phone? cause I'm enjoying mine.

OP, you're too picky. This is probaly the most perfect non-iPhone screen money could buy now. Enjoy it.

If you look VEEEEEEERY closely, you can find a fair share if impurities in the iPhone screen as well. Mostly poor uniformity of back light dispertion (although a LED screen, it's FRAME led, not local dimming)
And some bleeding in bright shades of red.
Plus, the "blacks" are tinted purple.
All those are tpyical for IPS panels, but if you don't look for them under a magnifying glass (like people are doing here with the SGS), it's very unlikely you'll even notice.
Each technology has it's advantages and disadvantages. Currently all reviews agree unanimously- The SAMOLED screen on the SGS and the iPhone 4 retina display are the two best displays out there, without a definite first place between those two.

Listen I know some of you are quick to say I'm complaining and that I'm being too picky, but I'm only reporting what I noticed to be true on my phone. I posted to see if anyone else could see thee same thing. Not once didi mention I can't live with it, but for me I can see it and I'm suprised that in all the review they haven't mentioned about the red halo around entire text, your telling me that s not a fundamental thing? Come on, fir some people being promised the latest and greatest screen this might turn out to be issue.
Just to be clear, apart v ffrom this and a few small software issues,i love this phone, so please no flaming me for digging at the sgs.

red halo around the entire text. sounded like you have a defect on your hand. My Galaxy s have no such problem.

This is a problem with the pentile technology they use in the screen, the screen can't display white on each individual pixel, it needs to blend the colours from two pixels together to create white. This can make text quite jagged and make the white bleed slightly at the edges.
I too am a little surprised this wasn't picked up in review (although trusted reviews did pick this up) but I think this raises an important point, you need to make you're own mind up and not just rely on reviews. You wouldn't normally spend this type of money on anything thing else without using it yourself first, and its mainly the impatient ones who couldn't wait long enough to try it themselves first who then have the complaints, that's the risk you take! ps I didn't try it first, too impatient

It's not a downside to amoled screens, it's a downside to samsung's proprietary pentile matrix. Pentile is not inherent to AMOLED; every other AMOLED manufacturer besides Samsung use normal RGB sub pixels.

Not on the Cowon S9/J3, Zune HD, Sony XE-1, or LG EL9500. I've taken macro pictures of my S9's screen and it is RGB.

Ok, 90% of the amoled screens floating around on the market. happy?
The vast majority of amoled screens use RGBG.

I used "flashlight" application to look for the green & red lines on a white screen. I thought I might have seen the green line, but I couldn't even be sure to be honest, and there almost definitely wasn't a red line.
I looked at the text a little closer than I previously had and I felt I could see red within white text, however I didn't have a "red sticking out edges" problem. In every day use, and I use the screen primarily for reading internet articles and text messaging, I have never seen the colors within white text.

hmm it odd, f I launch the google home page in the browser, I can definitely see a Green line down the right hand side.
I wonder if my screen as some kind of alignment problem. I donlt even have to look that close to see it, it's a one pixel wide line down the left. and if I look to the bottom and right I see red pixels sticking out from the screen.
I realise that Pentile will make text a little jagged, but should it be this obvious?
I mean the clarity of text on this screen is very jagged compared to my Blackstone, even when I look very closely at that.

This is the best macro my camera can do at 100% crop.
Try taking the same picture and compare if your screen exhibit unacceptable differences, you may have a defective screen on your hand.

I can see what you're talking about, for me it's one green line down the left and a fainter red one down the right. But this is only on a white screen and when I look hard for it from about 10cm away - it's no big deal.

Anyone else experiencing screen color temperature variation between devices?

Just got my 1st replacement Nexus in the mail-the first one was exhibiting symptoms of a non-responsive touchscreen after heavy gaming or when exposed to sunlight. The replacement unit is almost flawless, except for one glaring flaw...the white balance on the screen is WAY off! Whites are tinted beige, and the screen looks extremely washed out and warm compared to my first one. Here's a side by side picture (not the best photo, difference is more pronounced to the naked eye).

I'm tempted to send this one back, but I don't have the time to get stuck in a RMA loop, especially as I'll be travelling this month. What do you guys reckon-should I just keep this device with it's flawed WB, return for a replacement and hope for the best, or return for a refund?
Alternatively, is there any way I can dial out some of the warmness using software? I know there is a color tuning/calibration utility that is included with CM for my Galaxy S-anything similar exist for the N7?

I had the same issue as welll. My recent replacement has better whites bit the screen is still displaying a pinkish tint. My old nexus 7 had a yellowish tint as well. I wonder what the screen temperature is actually supposed to be :\

To the OP you are correct I've started two threads already about the color correction slash grey scale issues. Most agree that Google will not be doing anything about it. Just plain luck or bad luck. Both of those are not bad mine is just in between I would say.

Whites need to be white, not yellow warm or cool blue. Just try and do a side by side with an iPad 3 if you can live with the offness then do so, its a lottery at this point.
I started two threads because so many people have said this is an issues, but it varies so much and is so subjective that its doubtful Google will do anything. I prefer the one to the right just because a little cool blue is way better than warm yellow but the New one on the left looks more accurate.
Hows the Backlight bleed?
A good simple test is I go to T-Mobile.com or Engadget their Magenta Pink and Engadget's sky blue are hard to get right. But then again that opens up a new can of worms about your color Gamut and Hue which I am sure also vary device to device. Its obvious by now this is a QC step Google did not require ASUS to perform. Most likely to improve production yields.

Thanks for the informative reply. It's really unfortunate that Asus has dropped the ball so badly with consistency-I can understand lowering some standards for a $200 device to increase production yields, but they've seemingly neglected numerous aspects as evidenced by all the problems the community is having.
As for the new vs old one, the photo is not the best representation-the old device has perfect whites, completely neutral-no tinge of blue at all. Colors gamut is also pretty accurate on the old one. The new one is visibly worse-not only is the white balance off (whites appear beige), but colors are over-saturated and blown out-I noticed a loss of detail immediately just by looking at my wallpaper. Flesh tones are especially bad-much more red than they should be. I even had my roommate do a blind test between the new and old, and he immediately noted that the old device had a "sharper, crisper" screen.
As far as backlight bleed, it's not too bad on both Nexus's (Nexii?). The new one has a bit of bleed in the lower left corner, but it isn't very noticeable and is the least of my concerns at this point. I'm just not sure if it's worth entering the lottery again to see if I can get a better device based on all the horror stories I've been reading here...
Are you aware of any calibration/color tuning utility for the N7? Devs should look into integrating a utility into their ROMs. Something like this:

Sounds like they are messing with what would be called on HDTV's the Sharpness setting.Its gonna take a subpoena to find out what Google and ASUS knew about the color temperature slash calibration or lack their of, and when they knew it. I smell class action down the road. No way its just not right so many units coming out so differently.

Not only color, but I've noticed noticeable differences in brightness between the 3 I've gotten for RMAs. This new one gets darker and brighter than the previous one.

One thing I have its noticed is that its nice bright and vibrant not at all "washed out" as other have reported. But When I go into Display Brightness, (never Auto brightness) when I move the slider I have like 8 or more different levels of Low brightness below the the Halfway Mark so I can really pick to my licking how low I want the brightness, even on the lowest it maybe too bright for reading a book in a dark room.
But above the halfway mark of brightness I only get about 4 or 5 Steps Up to Max brightness, The last inch or more on the slider toward MAx brightness does nothing. So in essence I reach Max brightness well before the slider is maxed out.

That is very strange indeed. My brightness slider doesn't exhibit this-it is linear throughout it's range and the lowest brightness setting is quite dim, perfect for reading at night.

XDA developer Supercurio has an app called screen tuning for the Samsung 10.1 that I loved that changed the white temperature, which I believe is the issue. I think an app like this would help significantly.
Its also been said that the nvidia chip settings causes screen wash out after videos or heavy gaming. Its a battery saving measure while watching video or gaming but persists afterwards when it shouldn't. There's an app around here for that. Nut I'm after a color correction.

The screen tuning app can only be used with AMOLED screens, which the Nexus 7 doesn't have.

Yellow tint on S4 screen

I have this annoying yellow tint on my S4's screen, but disappears when the phone is tilted over 45 degrees. Is this faulty ? Shall I return it ? Or is there a way I can fix the gamma through an app without rooting the phone ?

I have this too, interested if this is a defect or just the colour tone of the amoled on the gs4

I have the S2 and it's blue compared to my display on computer, and I don't even notice it unless I put it against the computer display like you did.
Maybe try other display calibration, I hear you can change them.

Ok, been doing some google research on this -
There's always going to be a slight yellow tint to the particular amoled screen used in the GS4. However, to reduce the effect, set your screen mode to MOVIE.
Movie mode provides the best colour accuracy and also white point of the available choices. I can confirm this is the case having just spent a few minutes comparing colour charts to my girlfriend's very well-calibrated iphone 5.
So I would set it to MOVIE. The whites still won't be IPS display white, but then IPS can't touch the beautiful blacks on amoled. Horses for courses. Hope this helps.

It may LOOK washed out to you - but this is an AMOLED display, which is naturally very colour saturated.
If you compare the gs4 to an iphone 5 like I did just now, you'll see that even in Movie mode, the colours are a little MORE saturated than even the iphone 5 has to offer. The tint is a side-effect of this. IPS displays like the iphone may offer truer whites but amoled displays like the gs4 destroy them in terms of saturation and black levels.
It all depends on what you prefer on a phone.
In terms of the GS4, some people find the 'dynamic' and 'standard' modes vibrant and eye-pleasing - but they're not at all accurate and will exaggerated, innaccurate representations of your photos, videos etc. I have one photo of me in a yellow jumper (fashion mistake I know). When I have it on 'standard' it looks like I just came back from a two week holiday in Chernobyl. In movie mode, it looks exactly how it looks in real-life (i.e. still disgusting but accurate).

I wish I have another camera to show you the difference between my iPhone and S4 ... The iPhone's screen is bright white compared to the yellow tint on my S4. If this is a "feature" then it's not really efficient now is it =\
Maybe there is a way I can manually edit the gamma, this should fix the problem I guess. Or just exchange it for another one.

It's the trade off you pay for having perfect black levels and saturated colours.
The only way you're ever going to see perfect whites is if you get an iphone/htc one - e.g. an IPS display.
But then you're going to be stuck with 'blacks' that are actually grey. And that SUCKS.
People have differing opinions on which trade-off they'd rather have. Personally I'll take a slightly 'warmer' screen in return for having deep, inky blacks.

all screens will be slightly different from each other - but yes, amoled screens will almost always have either a slight YELLOW tint, or a slight BLUE tint - in other words, a slight exaggeration of one particular tone. If you have the time, do a google search and you'll see this was a common 'issue' flagged up on both the gs3 and gs2.
Your best bet is to do the following:
-set screen mode to MOVIE
-disable 'auto adjust screen tone'
-disable auto brightness.
You will never EVER see perfect whites on an amoled screen, and anyone who tells you they have them is lying out of their arse. Most reviews for the GS4 and also in the articles I linked you state that the GS4 is the most accurate amoled screen so far though.
If still disappointed, your best bet is the iphone5/htc one/nexus 4 etc

I think having an exaggerated blue tone is better than a yellow tone, in my own opinion.

I noticed this playing around with the S4 in the store. Still, much better than the S3 white point.

I received my s4 last week and found it yellowish as well. I have read everything regarding the screen yellow tint and the fact that it's because of the type of screen. I was going to give up but my girlfriend got one today as well and the comparison is very clear: her whites are so much better!
I have tried to take photos of them, and it looks greenish on the shots but you can see the difference. FYI the screen are both using the same settings: auto brightness off, brightness at the maximum, both screen mode in adapt display (I have tried the movie mode without noticing a change).
Mine is on the right if you couldn't see. You can clearly see the difference in the colour and the quality of the screen. I also noticed that the viewing angle are way worse on mine, the phone takes a greenish colour.
Finally I have very strong smearing/ghosting as soon as the screen background is black. For example when I am in the settings, if I scroll up and down, the thin lines separating the sections actually disappear whilst the menu scrolls. The thicker separator get a purple line until the scolling stops. Once again, the smearing on my girlfriend's phone is existant but much less strong. The thin separators are still visible even while the phone is scrolling.
I am definitely bringing it back to the store tomorrow. I am very disappointed with the screen even though the phone is great. I wouldn't change for a One, just for a good one.

I had the same yellow tint on screen and tried a few different firmwares thinking maybe its a software issue but nothing fixed it.
Picked up a new s4 last night and this one is perfect. The thing I noticed is the new one is assenbled in Vietnam and the old one
was assembled in China. Over all the build quality on the new one feels much better along with audio quality.
Maybe a quality control issues in some factories

Where does it say the location of assembly ? I want to see where mine is. Also, did you exchange your phone for a new one ? How did you convince them it was faulty ?

You'll see it when you pull the battery, there should be a sticker there.
I am located in Toronto and we dont have any samsung stores here
so i actually bought another one from this dealer i found on kijiji.
The new one was sealed and its from Hong Kong (but assembled in Vietnam)

I looked at mine and it says made in Vietnam... But I would agree to say that there is a problem with quality control overall. My guess is that they need to produce as much as possible to avoid any shortage. I had the same problem with my Note 1 and could be bothered to change it, this time I won't let it go.
I will keep you posted.

I had to go to another branch and thankfully they had a model with a white tone screen. I compared it there and they did indeed see the yellow-tone in my phone. I am getting a refund soon, it's not really worth all this trouble i'm fed up of the customer service experience with Samsung.

I just noticed that when i tilt the screen the bottom will slowly tint, espeicially when the colour white is displayed. White will turn into a smudgy grey/yellow. The top half of the screen is still unchanged.
Can anybody relate? This is slightly annoying.

on my SGP611, I can also clearly notice that. I find it extremely annoying, because it's the worst when I'm looking orthogonal onto the screen. The lower half of the display (in portrait mode) tends to be a little gray/yellow tinted. This is mostly visible when reading or browsing the web, when you have a white or light gray background. On colored image it's not that much visible, would be ok for me. Also the poor viewing angles wouldn't bother me too much, if at least the color/white reproduction would be homogeneous across the whole display, when looking directly orthogonal at it. But it even fails on that. When I scroll a text page on white background from top to bottom, it looks ok at the top of the screen and then, as I scroll down it turns yellow more and more. Although, if I am tilting the tablet back a little, so that I am looking mostly from the front, the effect is less noticeable. But that is not the preferred way to hold that tab for me. I have mine for several days now and it really annoys me that much....I can't believe that wasn't mentioned in any of the reviews or in the forums before. Especially on a high priced device like this. I was already starting to believe that I've gone crazy.... 8) So I'm very glad you pointed that out. I am probably returning that thing, I've bought it for mainly reading and surfing the web, but It just hurts my eyes too much. That's a shame, as all other aspects of the device are really great and almost perfect. Maybe it's just some devices that are having the issue but the ones that I have looked at in two other stores tend to have the sames issue.

No Problem here. I have the 16GB wifi version. No matter how i tilt the device, white remains white. Of course it gets darker the more i tilt, but no yellow or any other color is noticable at all. Maybe that means that you have defective devices and should contact your reseller about an exchange. As rodi has already mentione, no rewiew mentioned this so far, which backs up my theory of you having just bad luck.

Apart from the screen issue this thing is just perfect.

I just received my sgp612 and have the same issue. Thought my eyes were deceiving me but yes even in settings it's noticeable at the bottom half of the screen. It is annoying. I had a similar problem on my galaxy tab 3 8.0. I returned it back to amazon and got a replacement only to find out it had the same problem. Needless to say I returned that one also because it drove me crazy. Shame this has the same effect because I really want to keep this tablet.

This was the first thing I noticed after powering on the device this morning, instantly visible smudge along the bottom half of the display. This is not something I could live with so I'll likely return for another unit and try my luck...
Does anyone believe this yellow tint could be a result of glue between the LCD and glass? I know this issue was reported on various iPhone/ipad models, the Oppo Fond 7a and the Oneplus One. In all cases it was glue that was blamed. Has anyone noticed a drop in yellow with time or does anyone have a device without yellow tint?

I would also be interested in knowing this. I will be returning mine which is a bummer because I really like this tablet. I can't keep it knowing the yellow tint is there esp. after paying a premium price.

Yea same here, I'll be calling the retailer next week to arrange a refund. I popped into my local electrical store yesterday to test one of the display models and it also had yellow tint. I think my £375 would be better spent elsewhere! Question is what alternative do I go for...

Sad thing is my Sony Scr-28 white cover will be arriving today . Gonna be a tough decision on what to buy because outside of the yellow tint issue this is a fantastic tablet.

Yea I have the black style cover, I'll porbably just shift it on ebay.
I agree that, bar the dispaly, this is an exceptionally nice piece of kit. Though, to be honest there are more display issues than jsut the yellow tint which are giving me some grief. The display's contrast drops quickly at shallow viewing angles and there is a very noticable rainbow effect when viewing the display off centre too. I have used several Sony devices in the past and every time is this display which I like the least. Also the lack of a bootloader exploit for root is frustrating, I'm starting to notice how much I relied on adbock and the xposed framework.
Unfortunately I don't know enough about display technology to know exactly what is causing this yellow tint but I have heard of uncurred glue being the blame for other devices with similar faults. I would love to find out the reason!

yellow tint issue still exist on sony new product? i have a xperia zl . i thought sony has solved this issue for the new phone.

I just got my replacement Z3TC from John Lewis and the yellow tint is still visible along the bottom edge. I think I'll be returning this one for a refund instead of another replacement.

Today I had time to make a photo of the screen. I let it display a comic strip, because it was easier to notice than with a plain white test image. When you compare the white of the bottom box with the one of the top box you can easily see the difference. I also cut out a small bit from the top and bottom and put it side by side.

For me it's very annyoing but I will keep the tablet because there is currently no alternative in the 8" tablet segment. Maybe we should contact sony about the issue?

I wouldn't say it's very easy to notice the difference. First I didn't even understand where it was.
It's more like a faint tint.
Maybe mine also have it then, will check later and update after I've checked it more thoroughly
This tablet is really amazing, I love it much more than the Z2 tablet.
I checked now as well on a comic strip, I guess there's some slight less white on the bottom of the tablet (right side when in landscape) but it's so subtle so it's really hard to notice on anything other than pure white.
I guess some screens have a stronger tint than others. I clearly remember Z1 had this issue and for my first Z1 it was pretty strong. My Z Ultra didn't have a noticeable amount, same with Z2, my Z3 seems fine as well.
But there's nothing to do about it, all phones have it. I've been with Samsung up to Note 3 and all my phones from them had yellow tint.
