[Q] android os battery drain - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have i9500 cm11 ROM nightly. Version 20140105 and it drains battery. 43% is android os. 7 hours and 5 hours I didn't use the phone. What should I do?

When I had issues, I installed GSAM battery monitor and got more details. Shows when it was using more data, was awake, was using phone signal or wifi, battery temperatures..... For me it was some media files that were not processing well, so I had to drop in some .nomedia files.

Try to download Wakelock Detector from the Play Store and see the root that causes it. For example, the last time with stock rom, I have issues with Google Play Services with NIPcollector issues that keep on waking the phone without letting it to fall into deep sleep causing a huge battery drain. The solutions, Wakelock terminator, can be download in Play Store aswell. The free version of wakelock terminator only let you terminate 1 services which is just enough for my case. If you have more than one services causing lots of wakelock, consider getting the donate version.
Do use Greenify to hibernate unused apps aswell, it does really helps. :good:

if u are looking for low battery drain then stay away from custom roms especially cm based roms.
not only they drain the battery fast because they are badly ported or whatever but also they are missing samsungs energy saver mode which does save alot of battery. (only enable cpu and u will never notice its on)
so if u really want to use a custom rom then atleast get a tw rom.
my best experience for best battery on my s2, s4 and note 3 is original stock rom with bloatware removed, energy saver mode on (cpu only) and xposed+xblast module.
that way i got best battery on my s4 (almost 6 hours on screen time or 3 days standby time), all tw features and all features i want from a custom rom.
also on every android phone in my house i had a battery drain while having wlan on in standby mode.
i noticed this not when having the screen on... only like at night when the screen was off.
this took me about 1 day standby time... so ihad only 2 days standby and not like now 3 days.
lost like 10-15% every night while doing nothing. now its 1-2% every night.
this wasn't the fault of any apps installed or anything else. only thing which help me with this was buying a new router.
after researching which one would help me with this problem i decided to buy this one. cheap and also very good and alot of settings.
http://www.amazon.de/Edimax-BR-6228nS-Wireless-LAN-Access-Points/dp/B004XIE2T0
other then that NEVER use geenify or any other battery tools. they will not help at all...
only app that could help is betterbatterystats.

I'm glad you are speaking only from your own experience, because many people have had different experiences. I get as good as or better battery life with CM11 over TW on my i9500. Many others have said the same.
BTW, CM for the S4 is not a "port."

1) Download a newer nightly. Lots of progress has been made on CM11 in 4 months.
2) Backup your data, do full wipes and a clean install.

cmon man. it's ok if u like cm and all. thats ur thing.
but don't say u got same as good battery like on tw rom... then u ain't know what u talking about.
if u say something like that its clearly that u never had a good running system and probably cm on ur phone since u bought it.
but i agree he could solve that high android os drain due a fresh clean new install/full wipe (probably even with the same version he has on the phone right now)
battery would be still alot worse then on tw roms with stock kernel

Check this. If it is the same issue, it doesn't depend on the ROM, but on the carrier.

thanks for helping guys. I have found out that the music player doesn't give the phone to fall into deep. i want to move to be not system app and to put it on hibernate. how can i check if the app "/system /app mover" works on rom cm11 ? cant it break my phone?
thanks

Clicking the battery in settings will give some information.
I had the problem in past week (i9505 S4 running stock 4.3), where Google Play Store inexplicably was unable to connect to the server. As a result, it kept trying to connect and fail repeatedly, and draining battery severely. Tried all the fixes to reconnect Play Store with server to no avail. Ended up doing a hard reset, and this fixed it. Battery consumption now back to normal.

The key to good battery life on SGS 2 is

persistence (with a modicum of technical ability).
Ever since I received my SGS 2 I've been plagued with "poor" battery performance - The stock ROM that came with it wouldn't stay charged longer than 12 hours when I was doing nothing with it and barely 6 hrs when I used it. I quickly discovered that Samsung had released a newer version via KIES, updated it and it improved it, not life changing but just enough to see me through the working day.
I was also disillusioned with the stock ROM that came with the phone - too much "bloatware" that I'd never use. Found this forum and started by rooting the phone, then using CWM and Titanium Backup to make full backups before moving on to loading custom roms. Tried the 3 that seemed most popular and stable - VillainROM, LightningROM and DarkyROM.
Much preferred Lightning ROM but after I'd installed it found that battery life was abysmal to the extent that I could have the phone plugged in and charging via USB and the battery would continue to go DOWN!
After restoring back to a CWM backup I did more research and found an app that would let me know what was killing the battery (see link at end). I re-installed the Lightning ROM and found that a security application called Privacy Guard (not LBE Privacy Guard) was chewing the battery up. This now made sense as this particular app had stopped working as it should after upgrading to Lightning ROM.
Un-installing this app made a massive difference to the battery life.
During this period I did have Juice Defender installed and since rooting the phone SetCPU. I had also encountered the "issue" with SetCPU appearing to cause reboots, closedowns and had turned off the functionality. But I was trying to use setCPU under the stock ROMS not a custom rom.
Since fixing the Privacy Guard issue and performing a clean install of Lightning ROM I now have a phone which lost only 3% battery last night (almost 8 1/2 hours).
I now have Juice Defender Ultimate, SetCPU configured to on-demand between 200Mhz and 1Ghz (I raise manually when I play games needing 1.4 or 1.6Ghz), Timeriffic to turn stuff off when I don't need it.
I have also put time into either removing or freezing (using TB) apps that I won't need.
Yes when I use the phone the battery goes down but it's a powerful phone and I treat it the same as a laptop running on batteries - The more I use it the less the battery lasts, get use to it people!

If you use it correctly and know what it is doing = yes.
A solid tip is to never ever ever ever ever ever ever use any of the bloatware provided by Samsung. Don't even start it once because some stay active even if you don't use them. They drain the life out your battery and there are enough good alternatives.

I would love to hear about your settings.
It's an old one and oft repeated, but for anyone fresh to the 4378 (and counting) battery life threads, get out of Google Latitude and stay out - kills the battery
I'm wondering if you use your phone frequently all day and JD constantly renegotiating connections is it better to not use it at all
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
If you are using yout phone really frequently (data) then JD is useless, but for me it really good.
I have bad signal at work, so I have JD set to sync every hour, preferred wifi and automatic night mode when i'm asleep.
Data on when screen on and everything is fine (for me).
Is there a safe way to delete bloatware apps? I mean what if I delete something that messes up the phone? Do I need to reinstall the Rom?

It works or not is a different matter, IMO it is not needed, nothing is needed actually. Just install JD and you will see it under Wakelocks in Better Battery Stats. So it drains more than saving it.

Thanks a lot!
For working and busy people, i think you guys can get better battery life than me. As a student in a holiday(nothing to do except playing ps3 and running errands), I most of the time will unlock the sgs2 whenever i glanced or watched it. moving the icons around, changing launchers, putting widgets, etc... i took so many times using sgs2 everyday and it can last about 6-7 hours with almost all the time screen on except when i sleep.
for me, 10 hours is already ok. get used to it guys. buy a spare battery, or an external charger. no need to worries at all. you dont want to be a freak for battery life. constantly checking the battery and whats draining them. its not cool~~ use it to the fullest! until the manufacturers make a phone with large battery capacity! i mean officially. those 3rd party large battery are just a show off. they drain as much as the stock ones.

Not sure - it may have dependencies with other more useful tools such as Maps. Just make sure you are logged out and keep clear of it - it's reasonably well behaved if left alone.
I have always used Stock not rooted yet and get around 13-19 hours, I don't use the samsung hubs, but have facebook, twitter, google + and three emails constantly running and use wifi browsing a lot
so am quiet happy as it is hence no need to root although I like flashing the new firmwares via ODIN
Just a brainwave??
With Titanium Backup you can freeze your unwanted apps. When the phone is working without problems you can safely remove the frozen apps (after making a backup of course)

I noticed that if you have alot of widgets running you will ruin your battery life. I dont use many and got amazing battery life out of the Stock Rom.
I am now using cognition rom and easily have the battery last all day still....
Cognition - Imo best samsung based rom on the s2, super stable with battery life on first flash lasting 18hrs+. If you havent tried it id suggest you did.

36-38 Hours Battery Life!
I moved over from the HD2 a month ago. One of the things that astonishes me about the S2 is the battery life.
36-38 hours is the norm for me.
This is with:
- VillainRom
- Push Email (heavy use ~ 100 per day)
- No Lattitude
- No Wifi (HSDPA sufficient)
- No Bluetooth
I don't spend a lot of time making calls but being relatively new I am constantly fidgeting with it.

[Help] Battery problem

My battery is draining too fast after upgrading to android 4.3. Even only on 2g there is 1% decrease in battery almost after every 3 minutes. But with screen off it will remain almost at 99% after even 12 hours or more. But when I start using the phone for something like even navigating through the settings the battery drops 1% every 3 minutes or even less. My handset is about a month old. I am from India and running the ML4 android 4.3 recently released by Samsung. There is no wakelock when the screen is asleep. The phone screen consumes between 60 to 90% of the battery or more. I factory reset it thrice since the update but with no effect. I am running the 4.3 update for about 3 weeks now. I also installed Greenify, battery doctor, juice defender etc to save battery but there is no improvement. I installed the same apps that I installed on the 4.1.2 firmware but the battery is draining quite faster in the 4.3 version. I also freeze almost all bloatware using Titanium backup and even uninstalled some like Google Books etc. but no use. I don't use wifi or wifi hotspot at all. I rarely use bluetooth. GPS, location, etc off. I even freeze Google Play store, Google play services and Google services framework. No multi window, no smart stay, no s voice, no ripple effect, no live wallpaper, etc everything off but still the same. If there is anyone facing this issue and has already found the solution, please help me out.

Use your phone and stop thinking and worrying about battery. Though I charge my phone twice a day because I use wi-fi a lot,I still don't worry or something.

It is normal battery drain.
Battery on 4.3 is almost same as 4.1. What else do you expect its a quad core phone.

This is funny! You mean to say that the upgrade to android 4.3 has damaged my battery? The battery is not even 1 month old as I mentioned in the first post. The battery is very good on android 4.1.2...... As I mentioned in the first post, there is no battery drain when the screen is off. Even after 24 hours the battery is 99% from 100% with screen off. Why should I checked for wakelocks when the battery is fine on screen off? I did checked it to be sure but no wakelocks. The battery problem is when I use the phone, the battery is draining abnormally when the phone is used. Anyway thanks for your reply.

Using BetterBatteryStats will nevertheless help you to find out which process is consuming your battery…
Yes, 4.3 upgrade downgraded my battery life about 20% when I am using my phone. On idle it is better about 10-20% also compared with 4.1.2. It is useless to do factory resets or other nonsense. Just it is as is.

Okey So Firstly I rule Out Few Assumptions Made By Some Members(No Offense):
1) As thadoukuki said battery Drains only while using the phone and not wen its idle that means its not a wakelock for sure.
2)Secondly as the handset n battery ofcourse, are just a month old i dont even assume it to be damaged(Trust Sammy)
3)Thirdly 1% / 3Mins is quite normal on extensive Usage but as you say its just while navigating around settings etc. den i assume its a bit high.
4) Now betterbatterystats is good to identify what consumes your battery but ive never been a fan of that actually.
SO according to me try to do some trial n error work .
Instead of Freezing apps through TB u can use Greenify Donate to greenify system apps and user apps as well. It Does same job as TB freeze but without that extra hassle.
Secondly Choose a kernel that you think is battery friendly for you like the one which gives you peace of mind(Oh Yeah Battery's Draining Slow!!)
for me i'd go for Boeffla or Googymax
Choose a battery friendly Governer for ur CPU(For me Boeffla kernel with Archi_ultra_power_save governer gives great results)
Check if CPU Touch boost is Enabled in Kernel Settings coz Touch Boost gave me good performance and responsiveness but even i had observed that battery used to drain faster with it.
Battery friendly Rom with few Tweaks by xda members is always better for me over Stock( ArchiDroid Is the Rom ive ever Used){Personal Opinion}
Ppl Say undervolting helps .....hmm maybe ive never Done it but as you are very cautious about battery you may try it (on your own Risk)
Lets see if that Helps
And Lastly i never Observed much Change in Battery drain pattern wen Coming from 4.1.2 to 4.3 so thats not really true.

Anyone have bad battery life on g2? Any fixes?

Has anyone been experiencing bad battery life on the g2? When i first got it a month ago it was amazing easily getting 50+ hours with about 6 hours screen time. But over time its been getting worse. I already did the whole stopping the carrier iq and all that, it still doesnt help much. Now when i go to sleep and wake up 7-8 hours later my battery drains 50% or something like that for no reason, no wifi or anything on or synced. I did see some posts about people experiencing bad battery, this phone is supposed to have amazing battery life whats going on? I rooted my phone, still on stock rom, wondering if anyone has fixed their battery issue. Would installing a new rom like aeon v3 help improve battery like its supposed to be? Its getting frustrating, my gs4 had worse battery but at least the standby times werent as bad as they are on my g2. Any fixes for this?
There has to be something running in the back ground draining battery. If not try finding a battery Conditioning Application

Based on the above it could be a few things.
If you want to check a few things on the phone side you can:
- install GSAM Battery and let it keep an eye on what's actually using your juice. Then either remove, modify, adjust settings, etc, for whatever is using it. If it's an app... delete it. Reinstall it.
- You can try a factory reset
If neither fix it then you can try another ROM, but if your battery is just as bad with a factory reset I'd lean towards the battery. Maybe you have some bad cells.
I've had mine for a bit, and I only lose a little bit if not touched overnight.
My current setup:
- Madhi 4.4 KK ROM (1/18 build)
- Obviously rooted with the above
- Greenify on all my non-necessary apps (hangouts, weather and one other app spared from this)
- All my apps auto-sync features are disabled since I just run it once in a while, and things like mail / etc I don't need push anyways
I get pretty solid life even after a few moths of use now.

first, install betterbatterystats and look for wakelocks, try reseting the device. batterylife also depends on how you use the phone...i can get 9hrs on screen time reading books with still 15% left or drain it in 3-4hrs playing games.

Yes i have downloaded and used gsam battery app. I dont see anything unusual in my stats, also using better battery stats, its been in deep sleep for most of the time, and it doesnt say the phone was on or running when the screen was off. But for some reason i wake up and my battery is decreased by 50% again....I am using greenify and hibernating alot of those annoying apps. I am stopping apps that are running . And on the phones battery manager android system is first with 34% but it says its only been running 11min, and no gps is listed. And my screen on time was 2 hours those are what i foudn when i woke up with 20% left, at night it was 70%. I seriously think my phone is messed up when im using it its not that bad, but for some reason when i go to sleep and leave it alone it dies for no reason....

You think changing the rom would make it go back to normal? Even though my phone isnt supposed to be behaving like this with stock...

I definetly would try it. Also you could try different kernel. But its beginning to sound like there could be a defect in your battery. If nothing helps i would send the phone to LG and let the battery replace. You are still in warranty, right?

Any fixes for this?

my battery has a problem too..
when my phone is idle sometimes the battery level increases by 1 or 2.
when im playing heavy games like gangstar 4 the battery decreases every 2 mins and the temperature reaches 40°C. and when im just browsing it decreases every 3-5 mins with a temperature of 34-36°C. and when im watching kuroko no basket (wifi off) every episode just consume 2-3% of the battery (24 mins. = 2-3%)
and the temperature is about 28-30°C.
I think my battery drain problem depends on the temperature

Bad battery life on all phones? A curse?

Hello, so okay I agree the title is a bit too dramatic but I'm veryyy frustrated, so basically I've owned three android smartphones so far:
Samsung galaxy grand prime ve
OnePlus X
OnePlus 5
(a steady increase in specs)
And I have a question: why can I not get reasonable battery performance on any phone? On my oneplus X when I bought it, for the first few months I used to get 2.5 SOT and then months later I started getting barely an hour (45mins). No matter which roms or kernels I flashed, it made no difference. Battery saver on? No difference Greenify on? A small negligible amount saved...
Infuriated by this I finally came to buy a OnePlus 5 which I thought would put an end to this. However here I am, full of my battery saving habits still in me (which I have done so much research on to make sure they don't make it worse, trust me, I could write a battery saving wiki) and with a draining oneplus 5 in my hands. I've tried different roms and different kernels but still the same bad problem : a DRAINING BATTERY... I can get through a day with 3hrs SOT if battery saving mode is turned on but with a normal stock OOS I could never. I don't understand... I've tried BBS and GSam to try and find the source of this and still nothing. So I have resorted to the unofficial RR which comes with Lighting kernel which I have underclocked and use with battery saving mode on (not android's, ex kernel manager's one). So I have finally turned to xda so someone may be able to help me.
Cheers
Ps: I don't believe I am a target of the NSA and I have a special phone that is customized to track me...
I'd be looking at the apps you haveinstalled... Sounds like there's something running in background eating away at your battery life...
Or it's an energy vampire living in your home....
I am getting radically different battery performance with this phone day to day. One day it'll get a solids like 6.5 hours SoT and others I'll get like 4. Various issues it seems. Shouldnt be that hard to get consistent battery life.
Agree with above. Only common denominator here is you / your apps. But, stock+magisk with franco kernel and the app naptime is enough for me to get 5-7h sot out a full battery, but usually it's half full when I go to bed
You've mentioned that you tried many things to resolve this but I'll go ahead and tell you the things I use to make my battery last a little longer (hopefully there is something useful for you)
- Greenify with Magisk Module
- ForceDoze
- Location almost always on battery saving mode
- Force Doze for Google Play Services Magisk Module
- if WiFi is on, data will be off, and if data is on, then WiFi is off
- Bluetooth is always off if nothing is connected to it
- brightness is kept relatively low/halfway at most, the majority of the time
Running unofficial RR with Lightning Kernel v11 (1000hz version)
All this combined gives me roughly 9-9.5 SOT (about 140 apps installed)
If I forgot to mention anything, I'll edit it in here!
I've been very careful with my apps and I can't see what could be causing, I've tried third party Facebook apps instead of the official one for example and there's nothing strange installed.

Try with basic steps. Factory reset then:
1) Have totally stock OP5 - no "battery saving tricks", no apps. Run a bit. What is SOT? If less then average of 5-6 hours - either you have a "curse"/NSA tracking you or defective hardware.
2) Install your "battery saving trick" one by one testing after now and then. Are there any improvements in SOT? If yes, then write your wiki page, share your findings . If not, write your wiki page and tell us what application is a culprit.
3) Rinse and repeat until no more application left to install or you got bored.
I'm getting incredibly poor battery life after the latest update. I haven't let it fully deplete yet so maybe it just needs recalibrated?

There`s alot of sstuff activated on your 1+5. Try turning it off and check the SoT afterwards. Also some people were complaining because their Android-System was consuming way too much energy.

Oops, I meant to follow up on this. Android System and Google Play were causing a lot of wakelocks. I cleared cache in the Google Play and Google Services apps sad now I'm back to my typical 6-7 hours SoT.

System service drain

I was convinced on the forums that my system service drain was regular until I took a look at my buddy's phone , he has a le s3 with 2 sim cards and his system service doesn't normally go past 80 mAh on a full charge . Something has to be wrong
This is a screenshot of my sot when I first got the phone
8 hours of SOT is really good. You can try installing Wakelock Detector to get a different perspective. Also, anything that uses accessibility services may harm battery life. Another thing you can do is go to settings-permissions-autolaunch and disable autolaunching of apps that don't need to be running all the time. You can see what apps are currently running in settings - app management. One last thing is that your signal strength isn't that great, so it may just be how it's supposed to be.

I'm in the same boat as you, only I'm running OmniRom. But yeah, had 8h sot, can barely make 6 now, android system is my second biggest drain, with 2+ hours of cpu usage.
I have tried and I have found that 7.1 to 8.1 do not have the best battery life.
I personally have been aopk 6.01 and been getting great battery life.
I did do a stress test I did gaming and blasting next radio 21 minutes use only 6% of battery.

I've tried everything , disabled all apps in auto launch , tried it with airplane mode on , enabled background resource control . Never go past 7 hours max screen on time . My screen brightness is usually very low throughout the day
What are all of these services ? My buddy has none of these
You are running stock I take it.
Different ROMs are going different services like you show.

Turned on battery assistance at about 80% , battery life drastically improved
This is now ridiculous
All eui is in the rom.
I have no problem with custom roms. (Omni,Aicp,Lineageos etc.)

I don't see the big deal you have 3 hours 57 minutes on screen time and 50% battery left you will get almost 8 hour screen time on that is well above average!

Went through a hard 12 hour process , finally unlocked bootloader , installed twrp and running lineage . Going to be testing battery life
I have the same problem with Eui rom. As long as the display is turned on, the system service will exploit the battery. Nobody knows that?
There are no such problems in custom roms.(Aicp, omni vs )

Flash Magisk and try Greenify4Magisk. It's gotta be some third-party app you're running, or you have a bad cellular connection. Are you getting full signal on your phone? Do you have LTE running as well?

I haven't installed many apps , just the basics like Snapchat WhatsApp Twitter and Instagram . I tried to flash magisk but that would mean uninstalling super su . I normally get around 3-4 bars but I don't use cellular data . I have Greenify but it doesn't seem to be doing much
