[Help] Battery problem - Galaxy S III General

My battery is draining too fast after upgrading to android 4.3. Even only on 2g there is 1% decrease in battery almost after every 3 minutes. But with screen off it will remain almost at 99% after even 12 hours or more. But when I start using the phone for something like even navigating through the settings the battery drops 1% every 3 minutes or even less. My handset is about a month old. I am from India and running the ML4 android 4.3 recently released by Samsung. There is no wakelock when the screen is asleep. The phone screen consumes between 60 to 90% of the battery or more. I factory reset it thrice since the update but with no effect. I am running the 4.3 update for about 3 weeks now. I also installed Greenify, battery doctor, juice defender etc to save battery but there is no improvement. I installed the same apps that I installed on the 4.1.2 firmware but the battery is draining quite faster in the 4.3 version. I also freeze almost all bloatware using Titanium backup and even uninstalled some like Google Books etc. but no use. I don't use wifi or wifi hotspot at all. I rarely use bluetooth. GPS, location, etc off. I even freeze Google Play store, Google play services and Google services framework. No multi window, no smart stay, no s voice, no ripple effect, no live wallpaper, etc everything off but still the same. If there is anyone facing this issue and has already found the solution, please help me out.

Do a clean install with Odin?
Also try, http://www.androidbatterylife.com/?m=1
Swyped from Tapatalk Pro

I remember my 4.1.2 had the same battery consumption and with 4.3 it remained unchanged(if not better). I think you just gonna get used to that .
Use your phone and stop thinking and worrying about battery. Though I charge my phone twice a day because I use wi-fi a lot,I still don't worry or something.

I have this habit of doing clean install. No mistake with that.

1% every three minute. I think its normal.
Charge to 100% and use normally till 5% and then post the screenshot of battery stats here.

With normal usage it is more than 10 hours at 77%. May be it's normal but it last more than that on 4.1.2

It is normal battery drain.
Battery on 4.3 is almost same as 4.1. What else do you expect its a quad core phone.

If I browse the internet non-stop from 100% batttery then, after around 3 hours the battery is 20-30%. Is this also normal.

Maybe your battery is damaged ...
otherwise you can check for wakelocks using Better Battery Stats:

This is funny! You mean to say that the upgrade to android 4.3 has damaged my battery? The battery is not even 1 month old as I mentioned in the first post. The battery is very good on android 4.1.2...... As I mentioned in the first post, there is no battery drain when the screen is off. Even after 24 hours the battery is 99% from 100% with screen off. Why should I checked for wakelocks when the battery is fine on screen off? I did checked it to be sure but no wakelocks. The battery problem is when I use the phone, the battery is draining abnormally when the phone is used. Anyway thanks for your reply.

Using BetterBatteryStats will nevertheless help you to find out which process is consuming your battery…

Yes, 4.3 upgrade downgraded my battery life about 20% when I am using my phone. On idle it is better about 10-20% also compared with 4.1.2. It is useless to do factory resets or other nonsense. Just it is as is.

You are right! There is no use resetting the phone. It won't improve your battery's performance. I think it's a bug of android 4.3.

I think you need to try someone else's battery in your phone to see if you have the same problem then

Okey So Firstly I rule Out Few Assumptions Made By Some Members(No Offense):
1) As thadoukuki said battery Drains only while using the phone and not wen its idle that means its not a wakelock for sure.
2)Secondly as the handset n battery ofcourse, are just a month old i dont even assume it to be damaged(Trust Sammy)
3)Thirdly 1% / 3Mins is quite normal on extensive Usage but as you say its just while navigating around settings etc. den i assume its a bit high.
4) Now betterbatterystats is good to identify what consumes your battery but ive never been a fan of that actually.
SO according to me try to do some trial n error work .
Instead of Freezing apps through TB u can use Greenify Donate to greenify system apps and user apps as well. It Does same job as TB freeze but without that extra hassle.
Secondly Choose a kernel that you think is battery friendly for you like the one which gives you peace of mind(Oh Yeah Battery's Draining Slow!!)
for me i'd go for Boeffla or Googymax
Choose a battery friendly Governer for ur CPU(For me Boeffla kernel with Archi_ultra_power_save governer gives great results)
Check if CPU Touch boost is Enabled in Kernel Settings coz Touch Boost gave me good performance and responsiveness but even i had observed that battery used to drain faster with it.
Battery friendly Rom with few Tweaks by xda members is always better for me over Stock( ArchiDroid Is the Rom ive ever Used){Personal Opinion}
Ppl Say undervolting helps .....hmm maybe ive never Done it but as you are very cautious about battery you may try it (on your own Risk)
Lets see if that Helps
And Lastly i never Observed much Change in Battery drain pattern wen Coming from 4.1.2 to 4.3 so thats not really true.

Dont worry too much...Considering if your phone is new, the battery need conditioning. Just use it for a week with full charge cycle, I am sure it will be normal. Also you can check from battery usage, to make sure it's not some apps you installed that caused the heavy drain.
This is standard in the first few days; 4 days into me having mine, I noticed a decrease from 100% to 31% in 6.5 hours without even touching the phone, however now it runs a breeze.
I wouldn't say wait for it to mellow out and it will be perfect (although you can sit it out, regardless of what you do the phone battery will still need to adjust) but in the long run I'd suggest making use of the handy new battery management feature (Home, Menu, Settings, Applications, Battery Use) and also an application called Advanced Task Killer, which will manage applications that are loaded in memory on the phone. Some say this helps, some say it doesnt, but I personally feel it's beneficial to have it installed.
Be very careful if you're running Kakaotalk or Whatsapp - they drink battery power like mad.
Just be careful with running apps and widgets - I've put my WiFi sleep policy to when screen is off too.
Really pleased with my battery life - getting between 18 - 24 hours of pretty heavy use per charge

I'm tired of answering this question... please use the SEARCH feature.
I have the same problem with battery drain... When I restart the phone the problem dispersers for some time... I have only installed a few apps that I have used without problems on my HTC HD2.. I have run a lot of different android roms on HD2 without this kind of problem..
Actual I noticed the battery drain problem from first start on my ARC..
Now I have installed the "Only Battery Widget" and on the graph I can clearly see that the battery drain is lower after a restart.
I don't know when or why the problem appear...
I have the same problem before! However, after uninstall task killer program, disable Bravia engine, install shutupbatterysaver and do a reboot, the battery problem has gone!
I see Whatsapp is always in the "Running" apps list after restart. I don't use it.
I don't have an account and I tried to open the app once but did not register or agree to the terms.
It shouldn't use a lot of battery right?

It's installed on mine too but does not use much.
Kakaotalk, on the other hand, accounted for 22% of my battery usage - and I wasn't even using it!!
Uninstalled it.
my 1st proper days usage today and i got 19hrs at which point i hit 15% battery so stuck it back on charge, i was messing with the phone all day, quite a bit of gaming, 3 or 4 videos, pictures net etc, screen on auto, i have no task killer installed... i feel that when ive come out of a game when i check whats running its not there so no need as far as i can see to have 1, pleased with the battery it hasnt yet been through any cycles, this is the 1st time ive properly charged it
The battery drain from first day to third day is extremly different!
First day battery drained about 10% per hour idle, third day 2% only

Same here.
I notice there a lot of background services running on the ARC as compared to my Galaxy S and they cannot be stopped (keep coming back) or uninstalled.
I am using Green Power Free set to 1 min ON and 5 mins OFF to see if things get any better.
My Arc drain almost 30% over night with data off. I did a hard reset, it drop only 3%
For that matter I'll have to ask something... Is it detrimental to my battery's health when I charge it while still being halfway full? Does it hamper the total capacity? Because that's what I have to do sometimes because of school... Don't want an almost-empty battery there

Theoretically Lithium batteries shouldn't be a problem since there is no memory effect. Just do a complete charge/discharge/charge cycle once a month or so to "calibrate" the battery meter.
You should also do it once or twice when new.
One more thing, I am using third party micro usb charger, the phone screen unlock not working!!! Which I cant unlock the phone while i charge!! Just be more careful. Or any friend have this issue?
Hi, it happened to me too. My battery started draining faster. I was not able to figure out which app caused it, may be WhatsTheApp or Evernote. So I took a backup and made a factory reset. Now my battery is back to normal. you can try that. Now I'm getting 2 days even after playing some HD games. Really loving this phone. Hope this helps....

LG GT540 battery drain very fast

I have LG GT540 with android 2.3.4 cyanogen and the battery is just getting drain to fast ( its new battery) .when i go to battery use i saids that android system use 99-100% of battery waht its not normal ( my friend has about 7-8% use) and she last for 1-1.5 hours with normal work ,in idle about 4 hours till battery drops dead. Phone is getting to hot , i tryed to put others 2.3.7 and its same again what sholud i do.
solution i tryed: wipe battery stats -didnt help
going from 2.3.4 to 2.3.7 -didn help
PM me to see pic cuz i am new here so i cant post outside links at the moment.
Did you wipe data when updating to 2.3.7? If not, try it (maybe also without restoring stuff from backup, if wiping+restore does not help)
yes i always wipe data/cache/dalvik cache so tahts not issue, can i format SD card is she a problem maybe?

what worked for me
Hi
I wanted to thank for Zoe Rom on its thread, but i cant write on developer's threads yet (altough i clicked thanks button there).
Im glad i finally got rid of my memory hogging default rom and now i have a properly working phone again!
Also i wanted to reply there (to some people also complaining about battery endurance on GT540 on Zoe Rom) how i fixed my battery main problem.
Pic of current battery drain:
http://postimage.org/image/d8o8uusd7/
As you can see i am aproximatelly at 50% battery after 1day and 11h of not charging.
I had 2 problems:
1- Battery lasted aproximatelly 5 hours on standby (and i mean i wouldnt even touch the phone and the battery was gonne after that time)
2- During intense battery drain usage, the battery was reporting to have less energy than what it actually has.
1st problem solved by simply turning off the wireless after im done with using it. No idea how could that be taking away so much energy, but it was. Somewhere during the period i was using my default rom i got used to have wireless always on, and my battery on the later times was going away faster than normal (i also like to listen to music on the phone). At the time i didnt correlate the 2 things, and i just put in my head that it probably was the battery dieing on me. It wasnt! The wireless (i suppose because of the Sync function also being on) has been draining my battery like mad between charges.
2nd problem persists. As you can see on the pic, those 2 spikes down correspond 2 diferent aproximatelly 1 GB file wireless transfers with Wifi File Browser app. This transfers (PC->Phone) make the phone CPU have to unzip the two 1GB files to the SD, so they are very CPU and SD card read/write intensive (i can force this battery drops with other instense battery use like playing a 3D game for example). The thing is if during that temporarly drop on the battery level measurement, the level hits 5%, the phone will shutdown. But to be honest, this problem is minor comparing to the 1st one.
There is one other minor problem with my battery, wich is the reading being inconsistent (drops 10%, then gains 15% then drops 5% again etc), but is this a problem at all?
I read a post of a guy that had made extensive testing to his battery cycles, providing loads of graph of battery levels (cant find link) . I didnt read through all of it, but i remember the guy saying something in the end like "Dont be too paranoid with your battery levels, as they arent accurate. Instead use your phone normally and you will gain an idea of how long will it last with certain types of usage"
By the way, he also said for people to just charge their battery whenever they could/wanted as it has no negative impact on battery life. I also read a bit of a paper on lithium-ion batteries stating the same, so no more forcing full-discharges for me!
One last thing! Deleting the batterystats file is as simple as disconnecting your phone from the charger. Why? because that file serves solely the purpose of suplying the UI with info of the battery drain usage on the current battery cycle.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/google-engineer-debunks-myth-wiping-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/
And you can confirm this if you unplug your phone while looking at yout battery stats.
I hope this helps
PS: pls notice that it could have been not the wireless itself that causes the battery drain, but some service using the wireless. Finding this would require more extensive testing.

Update
Hello again
I just wanted to give an update on the situation since i noticed this post is linked from the Zoe Rom thread.
Two days ago i bought a new battery, an unbranded one (cost me 15€ here in Portugal). The shop had a legit LG battery for 37.50€ but i tought it wasnt worth the money. This battery has the same specs as the original, except it is 1300mAh compared to the 1500mAh of the original.
I dont have any battery related problem any more. Yesterday i woke up (100% battery), unplugged the phone, let the wireless on all morning, listened to 2-3 hours worth of tunes, browsed the web a bit, tested some messaging apps etc. Today i woke up, didnt charge during the night, and im sitting on 45% battery. Wish i had gotten a new battery sooner lol
With my old battery the phone wouldnt shutdown. It would always automatically restart. I had no ideia a malfunctioning battery could cause this.
I've have had similar problems with the battery on my GT540 with all cyanogenmods - 2.3.7, 4.0.4, 4.1.2. There were no such problems with original 2.1 I think it is the price for the newer versions, I can live with that, I don't have to buy new phone

Battery drain

Hello!
I rooted my phone as of yesterday, I charged it all night and when I took it off today the battery went from completely full to dead withint 3 hours of no use. I did not use the phone at all.
Any ideas?
If you just rooted your phone, you should not have battery drain... Try to temporarily disable root (with Voodo OTA RootKeeper for exemple)
Use better battery stats to nail down which app is causing the drain
Did you try wiping your battery stats in CWM - advanced?
There's also an app, Battery Calibration, on the Play Store that may help with that.
Not uncommon to get weird battery readings after changing rom's or rooting.

This is soooo strange. Not a normal behavior!! Before you root your phone, how the battery lifes goes??? Are you in a stock or modified ROM? Wich kernel are you using?
I faced this issue a couple weeks ago. Android S.O was the culprit and it was driving me crazy. I was using a custom ROM (RemICS-UX). I solved the problem returning to stock and erasing everything, then i reflashed the ROM and the kernel, in my case Devil3 0.79. If you want to give it a try!!
After that my batterys life is pretty fine, during at least 2 days!
Feel free to ask anything you want! Cheers mate

Go through a couple more full charge cycles, if android os usage isn't very high then, it should be fine.
Edit: on second thought, draining the battery without use in 3 hours is extreme, and would suggest that the CPU is running at max speed all the time. If it doesn't solve itself or improve a lot after a few more charge cycles, reflash everything.
Using GT-I9000 my sent Tapatalk 2 from.
Did you just root your phone or did you flash another ROM? Some ROMs have horrible battery life.
The stock battery usage monitor (Settings>Battery) should be enough to tell you what ate your battery. If it's a particular app you're running, try disabling that and see if it improves. If the usage is mostly "Android System", "Mobile standby", or something like that, then you have a tougher problem. The free app CPU spy will let you know if something is keeping your CPU usage high. Better battery stats is pretty cheap and will give you much more specific information.
+1s for BetterBatteryStats and waiting a few charge cycles before judging/debugging your battery drain, especially if you changed your kernel to root or flashed a rom.
I find that after flashing a new rom or kernel my phone, the battery level shown in recovery mode is higher than in the rom's settings, for a couple days. (You can see batt level in semaphore's recovery). I once dud a lazy search about this and found nothing, but I figure that's what is meant about waiting a few cycles gir your battery to calibrate.

There's no such thing as "calibrating your battery". It's a myth. Wiping your battery stats file doesn't do anything other than reset the tracking of what's using power. It doesn't magically fix your battery meter. Flashing a new ROM doesn't leave left over data, again a myth.
Battery life is never consistent after flashing because your ROM needs to "settle" for a day or two first and during that time your ram and cpu usage are all over the place.
The rest is a placebo effect.

I think I may know what is happening to you as of now. Try to bring up the Battery settings if you are on ICS and take a screenshot and post it here. If my 'spider' senses are correct, your phone did not go to 'sleep' and remained awake.
Since I can't put my signature for unknown reasons...(Maybe because I just created an account since I did not want my old one)

Currently I'm experiencing a huge battery drain too. I used both tools which where mentioned here in this thread and when the drain occours, CPU spy reports that my SGS didnt go in deep sleep at all with turned off display, it was at least at 100mhz all the time! I attached 2 logs from better battery stats and it seems like the NotificationService is causing it?
I'm using JW6 PDA JW4 Modem and JVC CSC in combination with the MNGB 0.5.8 Kernel.
Definitely, now you got to find out what is causing it!

Poor Battery Life

I have the European version of the phone amd seem to suffer from poor batery life. The phone can barely be used 3 hours continously. I didn't fully charge the battery the first time so is this the cause? If yes how do I fix it? Also I have everything like Wi-fi etc off so that's not the cause.

if you're comfortable rooting/flashing custom roms onto your phone I'd suggest trying that. I get twice as much battery life out of my phone with the omega 28 rom
Give betterbatterystats a go..(free to xda members) and you'll be able to determine what programs etc are draining your battery.
Your screen time of 3 hours mind you is not too far off with what you can pull off with this device.. (4 hours tends to be a good number).. also taking into account the fact the device wasn't fully charged.

I`m on stock rom. I get more than 30 hours on one charge, internet, video, email normal use. Going through a whole day is absolutely no problem.
There must be a crappy app you`ve installed that is draining your battery. You will have to find out which one it is.
Are you playing games? They will drain your battery more quickly. Also, see if any apps are running in the background. After that, un-tick the location services in the settings menu. Change to a static wallpaper. Don't set very low sync times and turn your wifi off when you're not using it.
If you're on stock, you should have around 4 hours of screen time on.
I just want to confirm whether not charging the battery first has any effect on the battery life.

That shouldn't have any effect, no.

Then why does it say in the manual that you must charge the battery the first time?

Bcos there's a good chance the battery may have fully discharged between the time it's packaged and when it gets to the end user, which in some cases may take months or even over a year.

I haven't installed any app except the stock apps so I don't get why my battery drains so fast.

I will put this in 3 situations:
>>> Wifi or 3g and screen on continuously and web browsing = 9h
>>> Intermitent use with internet on all the time but sleeping when screen off = 24h stand by + 6h screen on
>>> Just on stand by with screen off: 1)With internet on 2% drain \ hour 2)With all internet off = 0,5% drain \ hour ...
There is many variance acording to screen brightness and economy mode on and off, but everybody can get a good fast system and average screen bright with the above result !!!
get juice defender..it is awesome!!

Let me guess... your battery is consumed by cell standby or gpsd process?

It depends on what are you comparing it with? Now if you never had a android phone before then your not going to like battery life on them

Is the percentage dropping rapidly? And do you have all the features active like GPS, WiFi, BT, max brightness, etc?

Try going to 4.2.2 and see if that helps.
If your still having the issue, it's probably something wrong with your hardware (battery).

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping not to do that, I have flashed slim ROM now, see if this helps, do you think it could be because I stream music from cool Google play music ?
Usually bad battery (especially when it happens out of nowhere) is due to an app causing drain. There are apps that tell you what's eating battery (including the built in meter), the best of which is Better Battery Stats, which you can get for free from the XDA thread.

yup, majority of the time its an app(s). battery life mostly has to do with your setup, the apps that you chose to install, things that check for notifications in the background, and the way that you use your device. take control of your apps, and their/your setup, and your battery life should be good, no matter what rom/kernel youre on. greenify is a good app to help you get control of your apps.
Check your cord if its faulty, I had a faulty stock cord before telling me my phone was at 100% and when I unplugged it and used it, it went down to 50%
Changed cord, everything was fine.
Do you use a wireless charger? For me 90% of the time it creates a wakelock that won't allow the phone to go into deep sleep. That will hurt battery. If it releases that wakelock or I reboot my phone battery life is phenomenal.

hows your data signal? anyways, thats not normal. disable auto brightness, if your battery is still draining like that, then its not the auto brightness. in that case, its most likely an app, or apps.

The best you can do is to post a screenshot as someone said before. Besides of this, if you have Google Services/Android System battery drain, you can go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385843
Hope it helps.
