Anyone have bad battery life on g2? Any fixes? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone been experiencing bad battery life on the g2? When i first got it a month ago it was amazing easily getting 50+ hours with about 6 hours screen time. But over time its been getting worse. I already did the whole stopping the carrier iq and all that, it still doesnt help much. Now when i go to sleep and wake up 7-8 hours later my battery drains 50% or something like that for no reason, no wifi or anything on or synced. I did see some posts about people experiencing bad battery, this phone is supposed to have amazing battery life whats going on? I rooted my phone, still on stock rom, wondering if anyone has fixed their battery issue. Would installing a new rom like aeon v3 help improve battery like its supposed to be? Its getting frustrating, my gs4 had worse battery but at least the standby times werent as bad as they are on my g2. Any fixes for this?

There has to be something running in the back ground draining battery. If not try finding a battery Conditioning Application
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app

Based on the above it could be a few things.
If you want to check a few things on the phone side you can:
- install GSAM Battery and let it keep an eye on what's actually using your juice. Then either remove, modify, adjust settings, etc, for whatever is using it. If it's an app... delete it. Reinstall it.
- You can try a factory reset
If neither fix it then you can try another ROM, but if your battery is just as bad with a factory reset I'd lean towards the battery. Maybe you have some bad cells.
I've had mine for a bit, and I only lose a little bit if not touched overnight.
My current setup:
- Madhi 4.4 KK ROM (1/18 build)
- Obviously rooted with the above
- Greenify on all my non-necessary apps (hangouts, weather and one other app spared from this)
- All my apps auto-sync features are disabled since I just run it once in a while, and things like mail / etc I don't need push anyways
I get pretty solid life even after a few moths of use now.

first, install betterbatterystats and look for wakelocks, try reseting the device. batterylife also depends on how you use the phone...i can get 9hrs on screen time reading books with still 15% left or drain it in 3-4hrs playing games.

Yes i have downloaded and used gsam battery app. I dont see anything unusual in my stats, also using better battery stats, its been in deep sleep for most of the time, and it doesnt say the phone was on or running when the screen was off. But for some reason i wake up and my battery is decreased by 50% again....I am using greenify and hibernating alot of those annoying apps. I am stopping apps that are running . And on the phones battery manager android system is first with 34% but it says its only been running 11min, and no gps is listed. And my screen on time was 2 hours those are what i foudn when i woke up with 20% left, at night it was 70%. I seriously think my phone is messed up when im using it its not that bad, but for some reason when i go to sleep and leave it alone it dies for no reason....

Ah i am using better battery stats, and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary, its been in deep asleep for most of the time. And the phone doesn't say to be on when it wasnt supposed to. Same thing on the phone battery manager it says android system is 34% with 11min being on,and screen is 2 hours. When i woke up my battery went form 70 to 20%.....i am using greenify, and stopping running processes, like carrier iq an other apps. i dont know whats wrong...this is getting frustrating, i have also factory my phone already, it was fine for a few days but now its constantly draining like crazy at night...i love this phone, but i think mine might be messed up! You think changing the rom would make it go back to normal? Even though my phone isnt supposed to be behaving like this with stock...

I definetly would try it. Also you could try different kernel. But its beginning to sound like there could be a defect in your battery. If nothing helps i would send the phone to LG and let the battery replace. You are still in warranty, right?

What exactly is a different kernel? And well i got it through craigslist, im not the original owner. you think they would still give me a warranty?

my battery has a problem too..
when my phone is idle sometimes the battery level increases by 1 or 2.
when im playing heavy games like gangstar 4 the battery decreases every 2 mins and the temperature reaches 40°C. and when im just browsing it decreases every 3-5 mins with a temperature of 34-36°C. and when im watching kuroko no basket (wifi off) every episode just consume 2-3% of the battery (24 mins. = 2-3%)
and the temperature is about 28-30°C.
I think my battery drain problem depends on the temperature

Weird battery problems...

I used to get OK battery times on this phone, it easily lasted over 60 hours without really doing anything to it apart from disabling wifi + bluetooth.
Then i rooted it and using SetCPU i got 4 - 5 days battery, very good.
Now, for no reason at all, it suddenly lasts about 24 hours with very little usage, and nothing has been changed. I've tried uninstalling everything and using SetCPU + Juice Defender + Disabled Wifi and Bluetooth. No help. Screen brightness is on 60%, but like i say it dont get used much so that wont have much effect.
Whats going on? My sister also has this phone and her battery is a joke, lasts about 14 hours at most, sometimes not even her whole work hours, and ive tried everything to get it to last longer, even rooted it and put SetCPU on there, disabled everything, and uninstalled everything. Un-rooted or rooted phone makes no difference.
I know lots of others have battery problems too... something seems really wrong with these phones, i dont know if it's android 1.6 or the hardware. But i'm starting to think they are utter **** and should not have been released.
Any suggestions would be good, thanks...
More details please...

There are ways to find out whats consuming the battery on your phone. Settings-> About Phone-> Battery use, is one.
You can use the application called "Spare parts" to get more details on battery history.
By your own admission, you have seen the battery last upto 4-5 days, there could be many different things that may have happened between then and now. Trust me, 1.6 and the hardware are fine so you can tone it down a bit.
The forums have several threads on this topic so read them. Monitor your battery usage and try to isolate the problem.
At the worst, your battery could be the culprit... its not unheard of. If you can track it down to the battery, you can ask for a replacement if your phone is still under warranty.

It could be the battery, but what about my sisters phone? she already purchased a 2nd battery because the phone did not last the whole work day. So it's highly unlikely that we have 3 batteries between us that are defective.
The point is these issues should not exist in the first place, i shouldn't have to monitor the batterry for hours and spend hours messing around trying to get a battery to last longer. Everything has been uninstalled anyway so i can only see basic phone functions draining the battery like Cell Standby, Display, and Calls. Same with Spare Parts.
We're both in different area's too, and signal is good in both, so it's not like the phone is constantly searching for a signal either. Even our networks are different.
I've already read many other threads but nothing has really helped. Tried Helix Launcher and other interfaces too.
So i'm having to disagree and say it might be a problem with the hardware or Android on this specific hardware, which would make more sense, i mean something with software would more likely be the cause of this when it's been proven it can last longer. Just a quick google search will show how widespread this is, and the guy at my local phone store even brought this issue up without me even asking about it.
I'll keep trying though, and thanks for your help.

CM5 or CM6 Battery Life ?

Which provides more battery life.
Im on CM5 now and my battery dies SO FAST you can almost see it going down just watching the screen, i have the screen turned all the way down, use only 2g networks. ever tried to under-clock, when i check battery usage says system idle uses 49%
any ideas ?
Are you serious?
Better yet, don't use the phone at all, that might save the battery.
Dude with those settings its like having a 20th Century device.
Flash another ROM or something, try wiping battery stats, it has been suggested all over the forum...
Why do I even bother...when the mods see this youre a gonner anyway.
It's not so much the ROM, its the apps and widgets you have installed. Some are poorly written, some don't play nice with other apps or certain set ups.
All you can do is install a monitoring app like system panel, and remove the apps that are using alot of CPU.
That's what I have done.

listen pal what im saying is my battery doesnt last for **** since i flased CM5 so im wondering if thats to be expected with CM5 and maybe fixed in CM6. but yea ur super helping that for the sarcastic reply, next time dont bother. ooh and btw i dont have to use the phone for it to die with in like 10 hours it will be idle the entire time and it will die.

LOL! Wow, someone's a little edgy...
It's definitely not a "CM5 issue" that would be fixed in CM6 (CM6 is still in RC, CM5 has had several stable releases!) eyegor's suggestion to wipe battery stats was probably good advice believe it or not. Charge full, power off, leave plugged in. Boot into recovery and wipe battery stats. Power down, unplug and start up, let it drain allllll the way.
Check out xda homepage even - a battery calibration post!!
Battery life is pretty variable as you can see in the numerous threads on this topic. CM's forum has one with a poll with most saying CM6 is better, but not a clear cut answer.
I used SystemPanel's monitor function to identify which app was eating battery. It worked great! My biggest offender was Weather and Toggle widget. I loved its customization but its battery gulping was just not worth it. Got rid of it and my battery life is much more consistent.
I also got a cheapie battery off eBay which helped.
Both CM5 and 6 run perfect on my phone. No battery drains.
My point was that you're in the wrong section, pal.
You also might want to watch logcat while the phone is idle or sleeping to see if there are numerous errors or warnings scrolling by when there should be very little activity.
I have a similar issue. Initially I had the rediculous drain, but as mentioned wiping battery stats from recovery fixed it for the most part. Once it says its fully charged and you turn the phone off, let it sit charging overnight. Then wipe the stats in the morning and don't charge again until the phone turns itself off. Only issue I have now is that when I've got my GPS turned on, in use or not, it kills the battery. While in use I get about 2 hours from a full battery to the phone turning itself off. Haven't figured that one out.

No worries. It freaked me out when I first flashed 5.0.8. I use my phone as an MP3 player in my truck with it plugged in to my CD players AUX Jack. Did a 5 hour road trip and only lost around 10% including a few phone calls.

JI6 update: a *serious* let-down, in my opinion

So, this post is 1/2 "rant" and 1/2 "any ideas", but the JI6 Update has been (in my opinion) a very serious letdown.
First of all, I can't be alone in thinking that the late-September update from Samsung would be a full-blown upgrade to Froyo. Obviously it's not. I guess we'll wait awhile before that's released
Secondly, I'm one of those sorry saps that had the update soft-brick my phone. It took me a few days to get around to the ODIN fix (bumping me back to "stock"), but it was still a royal pain.
Thirdly, I've already seen some issues that I didn't have before. For instance, the phone "froze" on me while sitting at home: no screen response. I had to pull the battery and power up again. Nice!
Finally, the battery life is utterly horrible for me -- and I'm not sure why. Currently at 26% battery life (now 8h 4m since unplugged). 34% of the usage is "display", which has been on for 28m total. 22% is cell standby. 15% is phone idle. 10% is voice calls (2m 10s of that). 8% is the Android System. So on and so forth. Basically, I've *hardly* used my phone today, yet the battery isn't going to last thru to the afternoon. I have 6 active applications, with none of them hitting the CPU at all currently. Best of all? The battery icon looks like I'm about 1/2 full, so evidently Samsung couldn't be bothered to make that icon accurate. I know about the battery icon mods out there (I've used 'em), but I figured Samsung would take care of that.
Sorry for the venting, folks. Is anyone else seeing similar stuff? Any ideas on the lame battery life??
Thanks,
Yip
For me Android 2.1 which samsung released in Galaxy S is exactly like Windows Vista ! No matter how many updates you release for it still will make your phone **** !
The only option is to release a full new OS which is Windows 7 = Froyo !
Better than Windows NT = 1.6
Getting your phone bricked isnt the updates fault, there are hundreds of threads out there and reading just one couldve given you signs of warning.
As for your battery life, I am willing to bet your phone screen is full of widgets. Try limiting those, as well as automated syncing. I get excellent battery life that can EASILY last me the whole day (I actually find myself running avatar/pandora at the end of the night just to drain it so I can recharge the battery).
However, I do agree that the inaccurate battery reading should have been fixed a long time ago (or at least in this update) and that froyo should have been included with the release of this phone.
Your cell standy is too high which means you have things constantly using the cell signal to pull data, thus draining your battery. Right now I'm at 72% with 67% display, 14% voice calls, and 9% cell standby. Been unplugged for 3 and a half hours.
Not great but I'm purposely trying to let it die because I'm reconditioning.

Ha! You may just be right on that. Eclair seems like a fairly lame version of Android, if you ask me. Not horrible, but not great.

"Signs of warning" means nothing, my friend. There are folks who didn't even *root* that got soft-bricked with this update. It was (somehow) poorly handled.
As for your widgets comment, well... you would've lost the bet. I use a single screen, no widgets, no weather stuff, bluetooth off, wifi on (but currently turned off), and nothing extraneous. I run Android about as light & frothy as you can get! I prefer speed over just about everything.
Any other thoughts, though? Perhaps I should re-load Autostarts to see if there's anything strange launching at boot time...

Interesting. Any ideas what would be pinging the cell standby so much? I'm in a high-bandwidth area (full bars), so it's not like the phone is struggling to get signal. I use Gmail and Exchange, but my Exchange sync is set to "hourly", rather than push.
Doesn't seem like I'd need to disable my 3G connectivity. I certainly have never had to before.
You should probably reflash the update. JI6 was great on my phone, no hiccups, no lag, perfect GPS.
Also, you should recalibrate your battery after the update and give it a few days to settle down. I always get horrible battery life after flashing a rom, but after a few cycles I'm back up to 24h+.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Honestly, I wouldn't know unless I knew your full setup. What I will say is that I do have a lot of widgets and apps running that pull from the internet but yet my cell standby isn't as high as yours. I haven't reduced any of my sync intervals either. The 3G radio can really drain battery fast, faster than even the screen so that is a problem.
Also, in JI6, they increased the strength of the radio so it drains even more battery. I am running the JI6 modem however.
You should use something like WatchDog to see what is constantly running and using CPU. That could give you an indicator of problem apps.
Well, I'm disabling some startup items: Visual Voicemail, Telenav, and Daily Briefing -- none of which I use. Maybe that'll help. I don't know...
I was really trying to run "stock" this time around -- not so much fooling and tinkering with things, but it doesn't appear to be paying off for me. Frustrating.

Oh wow, yea definitely you need to disable all of those. That's the first thing I do. I actually uninstall Visual Voicemail, Telenav, Amazon MP3 etc. ALL of those things constantly run for some reason even without you opening them once.
You're not alone. My battery life is terrible as well after the update. I'm losing 4% an hour on standby.
That said, my phone is smooth and working great when I do use it.

I'm having terrible battery life as well.
i'm 24 hours unplugged, sitting at 27%
all stock JI6
Again, if you didn't do so after the update, wipe battery stats and then do a few full drain/charge cycles. My battery life always sucks after flashing a new ROM, but it always goes back to normal given time.

after the update for me, my gps is much better, but i actually have more lag then i had stock before....
so I need to either flash a kernel, lag fix, or a rom with at least one of those.... its kind of frustrating to have lag just from opening or closing a simple app, messages, or call... I honestly cant believe a phone with these hardware specs can have lag just from somthing as simple going into the dialer and exiting out...
Battery life seems to have decreased a little but still getting a good 20+ hours. GPS is a little better with use wireless networks. Lag is an issue now though. Didn't have much before a the update. Hopefully its solved in another update or froyo.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
So I applied the update on Tuesday through Mini Kies. First experience with this update, it's been great. My phone seems to faster, really I hardly experience any kind of lag or slowdown (and this is in comparison with my stock vibrant running OCLF). Battery life even seems to be better, but that is probably to do with conditioning. So everything has been good except for the fact that my phone has froze on me TWICE today. I'm thinking it's something to do with the apps though. I was in Layar and it was working for a bit when suddenly, it froze, I didn't have to pull the battery I just held the power button down for a good 5-10 seconds and it restarted. The other time was in a game, which kind of concerns me. I suppose I can reinstall both and see how that goes. I'm thinking it has more to do with the apps possibly being corrupted. The first thing I did was install the 2.2 market on my phone and I ran the update all function on like 15 apps that needed updating. Not a good idea imo, the market went crazy and forced closed a couple of times. I'm not entirely sure what is going but it seems like my phone is only freezing in certain apps. I hope it's not just some random freeze that can happen at anytime, that wouldn't be no good.
You guys complaining about battery life... i would Love to have your times. I got 3 hours and 8 minutes today on a fully charged battery.

Yet another battery issues thread

Yeah I know there are a lot of other battery threads out there, but just wondering if I can get some help from all you gurus.
Currently running MYN Warm 2.2 RLS3 with HTC kernel 2.6.32.15.
Have read a lot about this and done a lot of the usual optimizations (calibrate battery, turn off auto sync, 4G, etc...last test I did I was able to get about 25 hours on a charge with very little usage, which is pretty decent. So the phone seems to be sleeping the way it's supposed to.
The issue I have is that when I actually start using the phone the battery drains like crazy (about 1% every two minutes). This is with regular usage (i.e. internet browsing). If I use certain battery hog features such as Navigation or Bluetooh then it drains everything in a matter of an hour or so. Have tried playing around with SetCPU and don't really see any improvements (BTW I only get three options on SetCPU).
So the question is whether the battery drainage is a function of the Kernel I'm using? Why would it be good when it's sleeping, but as soon as I use something consumption goes through the roof. Is there anything out there that would allow you to see actual battery usage by app or service? I know Spare Parts gives you SOME info, but it's not granular enough (i.e. It says Android System includes many different pieces).
I doubt there's any magical kernel that can do more than what you are getting now.
Best you can do is to make sure the phone sleeps when the screen is off, which seems like you have already.
Max display on usage I usually get out of a charge is between 2-3 hours at about 30% brightness settings, out of about 12-15 hour per charge.
I sync google, always data on.
yo i have myn's rom as well but different kernel.. try the ones that myn added in the myn update app that came with the rom
Hmmm...so I guess 2-3 hours of actual usage is the best I can hope for then? I hear people saying how they get a lot of hours and that includes having Bluetooth on, browsing the web, Pandora, gaming, etc...If I did that with mine I don't think I would get more than 45 minutes.

You probably can extend it by using wifi but what's the fun in that?

Hmmm...Where? Are you referring to the Warm Updater app? I don't see anything about other kernels there. I haven't flashed any kernels on my phone. This is the one it came with.
What battery life do you get when you're actually using the phone?
Achllles: I get quite a bit of degradation on WI-FI as well.
I'm just trying to understand if there's a way to see what exactly is eating my battery when I use the phone. I mean I could be just sitting on the screen not doing anything and if it's on it consumes quite a bit, but as soon as I turn off the screen everything goes to sleep and consumption drops to about 1% per hour. just trying to understand this huge disparity.
Not sure. Best you can do at this point is to install current widget and see how much is being consumed, and guess what's killing your battery.
One other thing I've noticed was even at same settings, my phone often consumed around 25-30mA while screen is off, but now it hovers around 50-100mA, and I haven't made any change to the phone.
Not sure if it's effect on real life usage, but it does seem like it does.
Maybe its not software related...maybe your battery is just shot already.
I know exactly what your going through OP. This caused me to leave Myns and Cyanogen and go to Fresh ROM.
This seems to have mainly fixed the problem.
Myn was using the stock kernal, but his new rsl4 is gonna be using ziggys elite kernal.. Now is this kernal gonna be faster than other ones? No but myn told me its not about speed. Its speed that makes your battery life go down. These flashy kernals that have high quadrant speeds, suffer battery draining issues. So wait till friday for the new rom, and see how that goes.

there are 2 kernels there.. just try to look harder, i get 12-15hrs heavy use which is more than enough for me
Was never able to find these other Kernels, but I did install Netarchy Toast. Installed versions 4.19 to try Collin's Battery Tweak, but could never get that tweak to work properly (it always has a process that uses a lot of CPU). Uninstalled that and tried version 4.2 ant that seems to be working OK (without the battery tweak).
So after a lot of testing and re-testing I've come to the conclusion that my crazy battery drain only happens whenever there's a "radio" on. CPU usage is not the main culprit in my case as even overclocking it doesn't drain it much if the radios are turned off. It doesn't matter if it's WIFI, 3G or 4G, if the phone is using any of this it drains very quickly. Thus the reason it acts good whenever is sleeping.
A perfect example of this is that I used Power Amp to play music from my music library (from my SD Card). Used it for like 4 hours and it drained the battery at a very reasonable pace, then I stopped that and started playing music using Pandora. Immediately the battery started to drain at about 1% rate every two minutes or so. I've read somewhere that using WIFI instead of 3G would save battery. Didn't seem to make a difference in my case as it drained at about the same rapid pace. Now if I have both on, then it gets even crazier.
So having found the culprits the question is whether there's anything that can be done to improve this. BTW I think I have the latest PRI (1.77_003), PRL (60671) and baseband (2.15.00.09.01) versions

Device very hot + battery drain since update

Just wanted to know if anyone else has problems with their Nexus 4 since the latest update?
So far, within 24 hours I have had to charge my phone twice fully.
What the hell is going on?
Thanks

mine today started to get really hot.... it froze
upon reboot, it lost like 30% battery...
froze again in landscape mode
after a few reboots it continue to run super hot... like 65*
battery is draining even faster than what Ingress. uses
still occurs in safe mode
is the hardware going bad? i saw a few other folks having this also happen in the last week without ant solutions

Well then, since you replied to my post above... What did the battery stats show? Are Google services the problem?

i have had my current setup since i got the phone.. AOKP, Franco Kernel, undervolted -25mv, with like 215 total apps.... decent battery like, usually about 3 hrs SOT...
but yesterday was among weird to say the least.... Franco monitor will show my CPU was up to 170* at one point... but yet, my CPU usage on my monitor was with core 0-1 being less than half throtle while core 2-3 were offline... so i thought it was weird that my CPU would be so hot, yet not ON....it was so hot the phone would shutdown as soon as it got booted...
then my battery was not hot, but draining incredibly fast.... like from 88% to 19% in less than 2 hrs....
my battery usage pretty much displayed that it was the Screen consuming most of my battery.... i didnt notice GS being a problem, but im sure i would have noticed if it was
So far, i went ahead and factory reset, formatted /system /cache /data and dalvik... installed my rom again fresh.... its not acting up yet.... but for some reason i cant shake the fact its using battery much faster... i went earlier in my break from 94% to 87% in less than 10 minutes... thats not normal..maybe its just me..
so tonight i am going to reformat everything a couple times, install all fresh and see what happens before i restore everything back in the phone.

I'm with the same problem you're with. I did format everything, and the problem persists, can't really find the culprit on this.
I'm using PA 3.99 + FK, but I've tried with stock and cm, with stock kernels also.
Please let us know if you did solve the problem, and how did it, because this is becoming difficult to manage the use of this phone for me, having to carry the charger everywhere I go.

So battery life has been horrendous. It dies much faster and takes long to charge. My car charger no longer charges the phone... yet my Gnex and N7 FHD charges on that charger fine....
Qi charging works fine too (thats next to my bed)
So i called assurant, which sent me to Tmo, which sent me to Google (got it at play store) and they are sending me a new unit, since this one will be covered until manufacturer warranty for malfunction, not physical damage
Im sorry i will not have a resolution, i will revert back to stock and re lock it before i sent it back.... Hopefully i get a good one and not one with issues...
