[Discussion] Camera Overheating - Xperia Z2 General

Just wanted a poll on the number of users experiencing the above issue.

Mrplennium said:
I ordered mine from Handtec, and with any luck, it will be here next week. I live in New York, so returning the phone if it has severe overheating issues might not be as easy. So what I would like to know is if Sony will be able to fix this via software update or should I cancel my order and wait for the Oppo Find 7? The problem with the Oppo is that it hasn't really been tested, so getting that phone could open up a whole new can of worms. I am stumped as to what to do. I have never used a Sony phone before, so I don't know what to expect. I hated that physical home button on the Samsung line, so decided against getting the S5. The HTC M8 doesn't have enough in the camera for me to get that. I love Sony products, so I don't know what's going on with this overheating situation. There has to be some software fix, the only question is will they care to implement it, or will they write-off the Z2, and provide a solution in the Z3???

Sorry but I can't comment whether you should cancel or not as we're just looking at how wide-spread the overheating issue is in this poll thread, and what might be causing it, I'm sure Sony's doing the same.
What I can tell you is that the Z2 camera itself is very capable both for photos and videos, my short review will be out early next week. I'm yet to test the Find 7 or 1+1, so can't comment on their camera performance, but both use a 1/3.06" 13MP Sony IMX214 sensor that is capable too with 4k support, but the Z2's sensor is significantly larger.

Since I have photography threads for more than half a dozen different manufacturers (and actually use a Nexus 4 if that matters, fail to see why, but there you go), you can trust my word when I say in my limited time I really had and not making up the same overheating issues others did, incl. feis who indicated he too has overheating for 4k, others for photography. Thing is: this is not an isolated issue but pretty wide-spread, and XDA Developers is the exact place to deal with it and find a solution. What's not XDA-level discussion is some dude dropping by and adding the very useful "you are all technically clueless smartasses who don't understand English". This will end either by choice or by moderators.
Now I've already said overheating is probably not a manufacturing issues but a camera driver thing, my bet would be the live view taking up so much resources, that the ISP and SoC constantly working with very high screen brightness and the Sun giving extra heat, the Z2 just overheats. Or maybe the force-stop policy is too aggressive and the Z2 could take a little more hotness. The point is: we are here to address this issues not ignore it. The easiest way to ignore it is by not posting here.
Thank you.

Finally there is someone who wants to discuss the issue proper. I initially thought that it was a software issue related to the overheat control of the system. I have played graphic and processor intensive games on my z2 and it got really hot, to the point that it was hot to touch, not just warm. I did not realise until I ended the game (lasted about 10 minutes) and wanted to make a phone call. The area around the NFC logo at the back of the device was really baking hot. From what I know it is the area where all the hardwares other than battery is housed. I checked the battery temperature and it showed up to be at 49.3 degrees celsius. The temperature recorded when the camera auto shutdown was around the range of 44-45 degrees celsius. That led me to think that a policy was made to force stop the camera when the device temperature rise to undesirable levels.
I thought the issue could easily be dealt with a software update to increase the tolerance level. However, there is no word from Sony on it even after many users have reflected on this issue. This is when I begin to feel that it is either a hardware issue that is really hard to deal with or the policy is simply something that have to be put in place inorder not to damage other hardware components over prolong periods of high heat. From what I know from tech sites, z2 uses a liquid heat pipe cooling, something only a NEC smartphone has implemented before. Could it be a case of poor implementation of the technology?
And for the last time, please do note that (at least from my point of view), the main concern is the normal camera function is force closed when the device heats up, yes it does the same on 4k recording for me too. But like many stated, 4k does take a lot out of the hardwares, furthermore 4k displays are still considered as rather rare now. I would think most users have no qualms about limited 4k recording if there is no issue with the normal camera shooting, so please stop trying to ask people who voice their concerns here as unreasonable and exaggerating.

You can prevent that problem by go to setting > app > all and disable all social and unuse app.

The Z2 is one of few smartphones with liquid pipe cooling. This must be very untested, and speculation went to this beeing the cause of delays.
It does not seem far fetched though. Overheating not only when 4K recording, but just using the camera. Certain spots on the phone being particullary hot etc. Thoughts?
EDIT: Apologies to the OP, saw that you had raised exactly the same question.

Are you sure the Z2 uses heat pipes? Do you have a source link for me?

I cannot post links, but Digitimes first reported this, and almost all tech sites reported it. Toms hardware I think made a non copy pasta article.

I don't know, I've seen tons of heatpipe coolers in the past 20 years and when I look at the disassembled Z2 I don't see a heatpipe:

On the other hand, the CPU is very close to the camera, and that's where most of the heat is (top section). I doubt that the camera can generate much, it's just optics and a light sensor. The main culprit for heat is qualcomm snapdragon 801. And I don't think glass is a very good heat conductor.

See, your comments scare me. If it's a hardware issue, then Sony will never fix it. Apple is the only company I know of that ever recalled a smartphone because of a defect consumers pointed out. I am afraid Sony, like many other companies, will simply address this issue in the Z3. Once the Z3 is launched, you will hear reviewers mention how much the heating issues while taking regular photos have been addressed since the Z2....etc Seriously wondering if I should cancel my order.

all this talking is swaying my decision to get the z2. maybe i'll just go for the s5...(even though i'm really sick of its design...)
=(

Maybe its the internal SD card that is the issue or storage management.
I find the RW rate slow and assuming that 4K videos will need more write, then it may heat up. (My phone heat up just for deleting sms! and phone basically hangs)
I not yet try taking many pics or video yet but if you have a good SD card with good i/o then you can try and change camera storage to the external SD card and try.
CPU management by the software for certain task could also be the issue.
Browsing the web so far has no issue on heating up - it does not require any writing to the storage.

I was really considering the S5 as well. I just can't stand that physical home button. I am coming from a Samsung GS2; though, I went back to my Nexus 1 because the SG2 went for a swim. The SIM tray no longer reads my SIM cards. Now I want this phone and I am seeing all these issues about overheating. My SG2 and Nexus 1 never overheats when playing games or taking pics. I live in New York City so I take the subway to work. I usually play games to pass the time. I can't have a phone that will overheat and damage because it is not able to handle my ride to or from work. What scares me is that Sony has not acknowledged whether the issue is software related and fixable, or if it's hardware related. I don't want to have to settle for the M8 and its horrible camera. The only phone I see in the pipeline is the Oppo Find 7 and it's awkwardly placed power button. Though, I am sure that will have its own share of issues...

Well, I cant decide how you interpret my comments, I can only assure you that all I have shared is my experience with the phone over the last month. Whatever I have stated are my own speculation from little points and info I got. My honest point of view is that if you are someone who does not really use your smartphone's camera, or just for a snap or 2 at one go, this issue most probably have little effect on your daily usage of the device. But if you are like me, who uses the camera function regularly, then it does becomes annoying when the device you bought have this issue. My work requires me to take pictures of decent quality, hence a smartphone's camera is enough. From the poll results so far, it seems like there are infact quite a number of people with no such issues, so there is hope. I am still deciding whether to give my local Sony's support a last chance, haha.

Again, I do not see a heatpipe in the disassembly, but then again it may be much much smaller, in which case someone should still be able to point out which of the parts is the heatpipe.
Rumors aside, the Z2 only gets hot at the upper end where the camera and the processor are located. Any heat dissipating solution (heatpipe, graphite, whatever) should distribute this, but on the Z2 the bottom three quarters of the phone remain cool, and only the top heats up.
I don't see what a heatpipe could even bring without a heat sink. With HTC I could understand, the whole case is one giant heatsink, but Z2 is surrounded by glass.
Having said that, mine has never crashed, so the heat is obviously not an issue (yet). I don't shoot 4k video and I don't have a 4k screen. By the time I buy one I'm sure Z3 or Z4 will be out.

I am confident that this will not be an issue. Should it be, I will just lean on the laws and get a refund.
However, my wifes is exquisite and a real wow-piece (hey! I'm talking about her purple Z2!) and has no problem at all with overheating. I am expecting my white on Monday, and the stresstesting I will let it endure will be gruesome. I'll post back my findings.
I'm sure the S5 is really good, but I am having troubles with the SAMOLEDs presentation of colors. And the plastic. And the Touchwiz UI. But that's just my personal preference.

Of course the question is if ppl. without issues ever put the camera under stress during a warm Sunny day, cause that's pretty much what I did right after picking the phone up, move over some flowers under sunlight, switch between modes and take numerous shots, and after about 5 minutes, 'camera overheated'. The person I picked it up from says he didn't experience this, probably due to lighter use, and everything was 100% fine for me too in shadows or after sunset, that includes any type of short video recording.
And that tells me that other than the Sun's extra heat and the app's high resources, screen brightness may play the key part here. There's a thing called screen throttling, a display getting dimmer via Android governor when the phone gets hot (happens to the Xperia T), so if the new Z2 screen at 100% makes the phone hotter than the camera app heat policy, it will logically force close. However the Z2 never was that hot when force close happened, Real Racing 3 on my Nexus 4 while charging gets much hotter, which tells me that the Z2 camera heat policy is too conservative.
Of course if the Z2's watertight body gets warm easily under stress, it is going to be a tightrope for Sony the set the policy right between performance and hardware protection, as 4k and heavy 20MP shooting with gorgeous 1080p live view will always require ISP and SoC to run high, and maximum screen brightness might kick temperatures too high... It's all speculation, yet if I can shoot 50 images in shadows with lower screen brightness without problems, then my theory seems quite well supported.
What do you guys think?

This might be the reason?
Compared to PC and laptop heat-pipes, which range from 0.003 inches (0.8mm) to 0.08 inches (2mm) in diameter, smartphone pipes measure only 0.02 inches (0.6mm).
About the material : They are said to have better heat-dissipation effects than graphite carbon fiber sheets.

The Original Post....
Hi all,
This is my rant about the Xperia Z.
Prior to the Xperia Z, i was using a Galaxy Note 2. I loved the vividness of the screen (I know, unnatural colors) but hated how the 'white' was 'yellowish'. When the Xperia Z was introduced to the market, I fell in love with it's shape, and I have always wanted a phone that looked this good. It was waterproof so another bonus as I always wanted the ability to be able to wash my phone whenever it gets too dusty.
Sold off the Note 2, and bought the Xperia Z right away. The first issue I noticed was the display. It was sharp which was good, but the colors seemed washed out. Eventually I got used to it. The subsequent firmware added more contrast to the screen and after that, I had no complaints. The issue that cannot be fixed is the dead pixels. I have about 8 or 9 of them but they were only noticeable if the brightness was set at the maximum level.
Now, with the flaps, it is quite troublesome to remove them whenever you want to charge the phone or transfer stuff to / from the phone. I read about people who needed to replace their flaps and I didn't want this to happen to me. I bought a Note 2 QI wireless receiver and the charging dock. I modded the wireless receiver so it would fit the Xperia Z's charging point and it work. The downside to this is the battery heats up to 42.6 Celsius and it would stop charging randomly because of the heat. I had to go back to charging via USB. I use a case with all my devices so the official charging dock is not an option.
This is the case that I was using. My whole phone was wrapped with the casing and I took perfect care of it. Never has it once dropped or handled in a violent manner yet, last week, when i decided to wash the phone as it was dusty, I found a dent / line of crack (Vertical) at the top part of the phone on the left side (Right is where the headphone jack is located). I have no idea how the crack formed but it was quite heartbreaking.
Now the battery life. It is not bad, but not good. Not bad as it could last me a day of extremely light usage. I am forced to set my screen brightness at the lowest possible setting and turn the auto brightness off. Anything more and the battery would drain rapidly. I had to make use of the app, ds battery saver pro to turn off my data connection and turn it on every 15 minutes to receive notifications (email, whatsapp, wechat). I had to flash an awesome custom kernel (DooMKernel) so I could under-volt the device and clock it at 810MHz. With this, the battery would last me about 12 hours with about 2 hours of screen on time. The battery is used up my data connection whenever I turn the screen on. I visit the gym regularly so I'd play music via Bluetooth which accounts about 2 - 3 hours of usage. I grew tired of having to constantly conserve my usage just so the battery would last. Now, I know there are people who are extremely pleased with the battery life of their device and I don't want to argue on that. My point is, the battery is not suitable for my usage.
Finally, as some of you may notice, there were posts here claiming that there were specks of dust appearing on the images captured from the camera although there is nothing on the lens. Initially I assumed that these were just a minor occurrence, but I noticed the same on my phone yesterday. There were 3 dots and they were not dust. There aren't any scratches on my camera and I couldn't possibly think of a cause.
First of all, if mine would have dead pixels and also on the camera, I would return it.
Secondly, 12h with 2hour screentime is also not normal.
I get more than that with 45min of gaming, and internet on all the time

Unfortunately it's not as easy, in Malaysia. I know it could be done easily in the west / 1st World countries, as I would have done that immediately. It doesn't work as easily here. The camera issue happened yesterday, and about the dead pixel, it didn't bother me as they didn't appear on the lowest brightness.

I had to hide some of the information present in the picture but I highlighted the black spots. They were static and appeared in all the subsequent pictures. If I were to lower the resolution, more dots would appear on the left side of the image. I Googled (Click me) and found that is is not only exclusive to a few members on XDA. This is happening to many others as well. I tried going back to the original 434 firmware and the dots were still there.
Finally, I decided to sell off this phone at a slight loss. My first smartphone was the HTC Touch Pro. Then I upgraded to the Dell Streak (For nearly 2 years) and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I never faced any hardware defects with those phones and claiming for warranty was something that was at the back of my mind. I thought i was immune to problems that others were reporting with their phones. I was immune for awhile, and then I ended up being in the same boat as some Xperia Z users. I was extremely proud of this phone, as it looked good while being solid and had the premium feel but there is where it ends.

As another poster suggested you should return the phone under legal Sony international warranty regardless of where you live.
Failing that and with the knowledge that warranties are a problem in your country I would have to ask myself why risk purchasing ANY expensive device that cannot be repaired under normal international warranty? If I had such knowledge and lived in such Dickensian circumstances I would buy cheap and not suffer such a loss.
I do find it very hard to believe that you cannot make a claim because you live in Malaysia though. Sony carry an international warranty.
Lastly ALL and EVERY electronic devices can have problems regardless of brand, Sony is no exception. Its no fun at all when paying such a large sum for a top end phone BUT the higher the specification the more there is to go wrong so in a rather odd sort of way we are victims of our own desires. How did you sell it with all those problems? I bet the new owner loves you?

I bet you didn't read through the whole post. I have mentioned that all my devices are covered with a case and the dock only fits the device without the case so it is pointless for me to get it.

For warranty claims, it'll take some time to receive the phone back. It is urgent for me to use the phone so it'll be hard to wait for the warranty to take place. Some people are still waiting for their phone after nearly a month, as I found in my local forum. Anyways, the new owner is aware of the issues and is aware that they can be fixed. He can wait for the warranty to take place, I can't. I sold it at a loss, because of the mentioned issues.
u should just wait for warranty...

As what I heard, over at our region, there isn't much value for 2nd hand Sony phones. Just like how the price for the Xperia Z dropped rapidly. A shame I would say.

well its true, thats why i dont buy flagship phone when its officially release here in malaysia, sure drop price after 3-4 months. for me personally, use 2 phones, only use my z for browsing, games abit, camera, wash in water(showoff ). my nokia e66 pretty much my main phone:silly: just love the old phone
btw i have not yet have issue on camera having black dot suddenly, been using my z for a month and a half now. care to inform me of your detail of the phone? eg, when u bought the phone, is it original or local ap, and any info about the software u had before the problem. thanks.. i have read your post but in need of more detail.

True. Even the SGS4 dropped it's price significantly. Some claim that it is due to excessive stock , while the rest says that it's probably due to the release of the LTE version. I believe the price drop on the SGS4 is more severe than the Xperia Z though.
I bought the Xperia Z on the 15th of April 2013. I noticed the dots on the camera on the 12th of June, just 3 days shy of being 2 months old. Found a thread on XDA HERE and I found out that many more are complaining about it. Whats worse is someone sent it to be repaired and the phone lost it's waterproof ability. The phone that I own is an AP set marketed for Sweden.
My main usage is whatsapp, and instagram and Jefit pro. I use Jefit pro to help with my workout in the gym. Other than that, when I am in the gym, I'll play music via bluetooth. Another funny issue is , using poweramp, no matter what configuration i use, music titles would show as 'unknown' on my sony ericsson MW100 (2nd gen). When it was paired with my note 2, music titles displayed without any issue. The walkman app would display the music title though but the sound reproduction of poweramp seems to be better.
I have a tasker profile that whenever i connect to a known wifi network, my lockscreen would be disabled. Whenever I press the "next" or "previous" button on my bluetooth headset while playing music, the screen on the device would turn on. Never faced this behavior on my previous phone. Other than that, I don't do much surfing on the device whenever I am outside of the house due to the battery life.

I am glad you agreed. That is the truth after all. Brightness is set all the way down to 0 with automatic brightness turned off.
I don't use stamina mode or greenify because DS Battery pro kills the data connection and that was all that I neeeded. Tasker was set to turn off auto sync whenever my phone leaves the charger. I don't think the battery could do better than that.
I tried running a youtube video (Dead Pixel massager) on wifi, clocked at 594 MHz @ 72500 MV (Undervolted) and my screen on time was about 5 Hours 1 minute before the device ran low on battery.

Sony....sony....What's happening...
We won't buy new (same) device just for new firmware..

It seems like people tend to forget things that aren't specs! I think the current processors are fast enough, and the updates are minor (SD800 vs SD801), so we should wait for 64-bit to see a jump perfomance wise.
The recent picture leaks reveal new speaker design and more rounded edges on the phone. The screen could be better calibrated. Perhaps better resistance to heat aka longer 4k recording. I think there's quite a bit to work on. Wireless charging?
And we should take in concideration that the Z2 came out some 6 months ago!
May be Z2 will has unique features or better camera sensor or better build quality.
And maybe a higher mp front facing camera.

Of you ask me - that's not enough to call it Z3 but OK...we'll see.
BTW, I think we don't have to wait 808 or 810, S805 will be and would be something you will expect now.
Sony built Z1 with new 800, then they built Z2 with overclocked 800 - S801... What now, they will overclock overclocked 800!?!
They, obviously can't follow 6 months cycle...

i agree there is a lot that could be better on the Z2/Z1 -- it seems that Sony is edging towards a perfect iteration of Xperia Omnibalance. the issue is that the Z3 is really what the Z1 should have been!
also hoping that there will be better speakers (but judging from the size of those speaker holes, not holding my breath), better heat dissipation for 4K, and less chance of self-cracking glass. better camera algorithms for HDR, 20MP automatic, etc.
wireless charging? that would be cool, but i'd rather see Sony get a magnetic charging port that doesn't fall out.
SD805 would have been expected, so that's disappointing. but maybe 32GB/64GB variants?

64-bit performance will be negligible FYI; it's unnecessary for mobile products. Just as a QHD screen is on a ~5 inch device....

The first iteration might not improve the performance much, but it will continue to get better.
Calling it unnecessary for mobile products is making the same mistake as an IBM Senior Engineer did back in '68.
He said "Yeah, microchips, but what... is it good for?", and as you can see microchips are good for plenty of stuff.
Or another example of the same mistake is Ken Olson, President of Digital Equipment Corp, 1977 whom said "There is no reason anyone in the right state of mind will want a computer in their home."
There is always a reason to make better, cheaper, faster and more mobile computers.
Edit:
Oh, I just noticed you have an iPhone 4, that's why you are ignorant.

Your comparisons are so unrelated to the topic at hand that it just blows my mind. You literally just fried my brain with your nonsense. You should have used some car references in there as well to drive your excellent and well thought out point home. If you new a single thing about 64 bit architecture, which you clearly don't, you would know that 64 bit even for computers is questionable.

64 bit SoC's will allow more than 3gb RAM in a phone too, that's probably the more realistic benefit at the minute (IMHO).
This makes me happy. Now I can hold on to my Z2 longer without thinking it's an obsolete piece of ****.

Haha.. I wouldn't consider it a BAD phone based on that it isn't the latest model
I'm considering buying the Z2 now, and it seems it really doesn't matter regarding performance. Am I going to regret not waiting it out?!
OT: I'm assuming the "major" differences are going to be physical and UX. Sony has chosen a bumpy road trying to impress every half year. We really can't expect a revolution each time (and therefore not making the previous model obsolete)

Funny that you didn't have any better argument than "Lol".
But since you think 64bit is unnecessary why are you using 64bit on your computer?
I call it now, your argument is going to be something like "phones are not computers".
It's absolutely true that we don't need or use many things on our PC, phones or tablets...
But that doesn't mean we don't need it, or if you like, it doesn't mean it's not good for industry to grow...
I'm sure I'm not the only one who is not using 100% of any device, that's perfectly normal...
But...
First step will be 64bit architecture then it'll produce less heat, less heat means happy camera users, happy camera users will lead to something else...
That's industry and it's perfectly normal to go forward...
Someone said why QHD screens...well because that will sell devices...
Should they add CRT into Z3 plans?
Yes, we don't need many things but I like to have new and fancy things...
To be honest I don't need 4K recording on my phone but I like to have it
Back to topic...
Totally agree with statement that Sony can't build (not only Sony) and release revolution every six months but it's not cool to sell devices for 1000$, devices that are finished...
Z3 will be finished Z or Z1 - someone said that and I believe that's, sad but, true...

Pure nonsense. I understand meaning of your statements, but this one is just simply not true.
If Sony does refresh their flagship as per EvLeaks tweet, then they're are going to piss off a huge portion of the customer base who bought into the Z2, me included, they seem to be going down the same road that HTC went down, re-releasing minor spec bumped versions of their flagship devices because they didnt cover all angles with the initial devices.
HTC have just won back their customer base and regardless of sales, they have the best Android phone out period, with the M8 they got the formula 100% correct and they are seeing a positive return, Sony has been playing the developers friend and that has opened up doors and they have grown a loyal fan base but they should be careful of this business practice where they do what the did with the Z > Z1.
The life span on a flagship is already down to 11 months maybe and cutting it shorter is going to piss people off and they will take their business elsewhere, while Sony doesnt have the capital expenditure problems that HTC has since Sony is a multi dimentional corporation but this 6 months refresh cycle with see them run at a loss in the long run.
I'm happy with my Z2 and would love for it to be the top dog till the next Mobile World Congress.

Haha...you shouldn't take everything so serious...take a deep breath and remember... We are on forum, not in North Korea...
Everyone has right to day what he/she thinks it's right...
If you really understood what I wanted to say, you won't be writing something like that...
I actually know what I'm saying and don't need to ask Google for opinion.
BTW - don't take everything from Google and wiki for granted...
I just simplified long statement....
If you want or need long version why it would lead to "cooler" cpu and device I'll write that for you...
I'm not talking about higher frequencies, I'm talking about new and better architecture and benefits.
And yeah...It's not problem in cpus, it's problem in OS (to add more RAMs)...
But one lead to other and it'll eventually lead to faster devices, powered with better chipsets, more RAM and less heat...
That all ends with happier users, or grumpy ones, like you...

My experience with the HTC M9 (Two months)

I've purchased the HTC M9 as soon as the device was available to order online. After using it for two months, I would like to share my experiences with this device. If you are planning on to purchase this device, I would not recommend it.
There is no doubt that the hardware is overkill for a person like me, who uses the device for regular purposes (email, notes, texting, calls, and occasional gaming), but HTC M9 made me have second thoughts. Since the first day I've used this device, I have noticed the heating issue. The heating issue still persists on this device today even on light uses, such as streaming internet radio through car Bluetooth. Monitoring the CPU temperature through the CPU-Z and AIDA64 applications from Google Play Store, I've noticed the CPU throttles to just under 850mhz once the temperature reaches 61'C. When I contacted HTC support, their response was: "The device will throttle the CPU clock to cool down to prevent possible burns and other injuries. Our software engineers will look into this heat issue that you are facing and an engineer will give you a call to get further information." The engineer gave me a call and replaced the device with a new one, which still came with the heat issue - There's basically no solution to this other than to just opt in for another brand's smartphone.
The device is durable. I've dropped it without any casing and there were only a few minor scratches.
There is no doubt that HTC entered the megapixel game with its 20mp camera sensor on the HTC M9. I am disappointed to admit that the camera is subpar compared to my Galaxy Note 3 from 2013. Fuzzy pictures are not acceptable in 2015, but HTC M9 blows this section out the park (sarcasm)! I believe this is a perfect example that megapixels aren't everything to take a sharp and clear photo.
I am sure that HTC optimized the device's software; but its hardware couldn't handle it because of the heating issue that I mentioned above. One aspect that I like about HTC is that HTC seeds their core apps, such as sense home to the Google Play Store, so everyone can always be on the latest version.
CONCLUSION: I personally do not recommend this device because of its hardware. The device does not function like it's supposed to be with those beefy hardware. With the same price of the HTC M9, I should've waited and opted in for the LG G4 or maybe the Galaxy S6.

I stream bluetooth in my car all day long and have never gotten close to 61 celsius. I even stream bluetooth, have GPS going, plugged in at the same time and have a black car that bakes on the interior and still peaked at 49 celsius. I just don't believe you or that would be a general thing to happen, sorry.
The problem I have with the camera has more to do with the shakey video than the camera itself. In day to day use it takes great pics. Low light pics at night are not that great though. But to make a general statement that all pictures "blow" is an exaggeration.
The S6 has a whole host of issues including battery life and software related failings. It also gets very hot gaming.
Overall, the hardware and software together are fabulous. It is the main reason I am keeping it. The S6 and G4 still isn't as polished and smooth as Sense.
Hi, I've found that this phone runs much cooler than my HTC One M7. Even while gaming it only gets warm, but never hot.
The only time the phone gets hot is after installing a new ROM, when it has to optimize all of the apps.
One has to remember this phone is a metal build with the aluminium case in direct thermal contact with the CPU. The phone is designed to transfer heat away from the CPU. I for one am very pleased with the quality and operation of this phone. Camera low light performance is the only area I find lacking. However it can take reasonable night shots if you hold the camera still. The attached photo was taken by moonlight.

I agree with you when you said the heat is unbarrable and camera is subpar. I've upgraded my HTC M7 to this HTC M9 and regretted it. I will be upgrading to the Galaxy Note 5 when it comes out because this phone probably makes more heat than i7 on full load. Thanks for your review, I agree with you!
I've also had my phone for two months and it doesn't get that hot, not even close. I don't do any gaming, so I can't speak for how hot it will get gaming. When I first got my phone it did get noticeably warm, but four days after having it, I got an update that greatly improved this. During the update process, there was some glitch that forced the phone to hard reset. Because of this, I also decided to wipe the cache partition. I'm not sure if the wiping helped, but I would recommend giving it a shot. Your phone should not be getting that hot with general usage. If the wipe doesn't help and you have already tried a hard reset, I would try to get it exchanged.

You still get heating issues with latest update? I'm sorry to hear that , have you checked to see if there are apps running in the background? Me personally with my device it never goes over 42c and it only gets that high after gaming and full brightness on screen. The hardware is beast mode in my opinion on this device, HTC just has to get their software up to spec (which I've heard 1.40 base is good and 5.1 should be just around the corner.)

Oh, wait I know.:
I don't believe neither one of you :good:
I am using m9 for almost 2 months and have never seen temperatures above 48 degrees, even while i am playing games and i do play a lot...
I play games non stop on M9, it's actually killer in gaming, never crosses 45c
As for camera well just look.at the wonders we are posting in the photo thread
There is a learning curve with M9 camera but it's a powerful camera non the less, especially RAW
Also the 1.40 update greatly Improved things

This is also just my opinion, but like you I personally haven't seen users with issues with this device show analytical data to support their statements. Well I did see a post from one user with heat and battery issues, but it was from something running in the background keeping all 8 running at Max frequency and after a few days of trouble shooting and help from others in this forum , they figured it out. With 5.1 right around the corner and HTC also saying they are going to push Android M to this device , the only issue is getting them in a timely fashion. Also the fact HTC dropped the ball on marketing and shot them selves in the foot with releasing the m9 + in a select market upsetting the buyers who think a finger print scanner and a higher resolution screen (which anything over 1080 is only noticeably different on a 70+ inch screen) is what the standard is supposed to be. Not to mention the poor sales caused HTC to make a public apology causing them to promise a "hero" device to be released. What I love about xda is there will always be development even if the bandwagon jumps devices.
Again this is just my opinion, I respect everyone's opinion, but do like to see more than just the device gets hot or how a previous device with a year or more development runs better because of multiple software and radio updates.

And you were in what firmware? Even with the previous firmware, the max temperature that i achieved was 50 degrees using gps and charging on car.
And after the 401.8 update, everything runs cooler and smoother.
Just need to take a few shots and test the camera now.

Don't get me wrong m8, I respect each and everyone's opinion and I never argue about, but I just don't believe what those two are saying.
There are differences between: opinions - findings - lies.
What those two wrote falls in the last category, and this is also just my opinion.

Upon checking background applications that are open, I've noticed HTC sense home was the cause of this heating issue. It is taking up the most resources, but is there a fix for this? Thanks so much for that reminder!
@LTE-X
Does your call drop too when the phone heats up? Because I was talking to someone on the phone few days ago and noticed that the phone disconnected the call while on perfect 4 bar signal.
It's fine if no one believes me, I will not make anyone believe something that they do not agree with. I am fine with that. I was just sharing solely my experiences with the device. I don't know why some of you PM me about the user AT7197 how the user has concurring opinion as me. I don't know that user, so please stop with the PM's that doesn't relate to me.
Here are more details that I should've specified:
1) The firmware I am running is version 1.40.401.3.
2) I've had two identical HTC M9 model. The one that I purchased and the one that the HTC support exchanged out. The new one that I received from support continues to heat up. HTC support is aware of this issue and released the firmware version 1.40.401.8 addressing this issue. I will update the OP after I receive the OTA in the future.
Camera is actually better than S6 in daylight since 1.40.
Yes heating can be annoying (but rarely) and can occur with any app but it's said that drivers for s810 are coming up with heat fix.

Upgrading from Z5C, some concerns.

Hello,
Someone broke my Z5C and I'm now looking for a new phone.
I liked the form factor of the Z5C, but several things were "mehhh".
First of all, the fingerprint scanner wasn't working under certain conditions. I read here and there that it was mostly fixed and that the XC fingerprint sensor is much more accurate. Can you confirm ?
Secundo, the phone was overheating A LOT. I guess it had to do with the SoC. Is it fixed ? I don't know if it was related, but my phone randomly lagged (and would sometime reboot for no reason).
The amount of RAM was clearly not sufficient as apps would need to be restarted completely during multitasking.
Also, the screen was just "ok" for me. How deep are the blacks on the XC?
How slow is the camera to open? It was really unreliable on the Z5C for me. Can you turn off the "photo enhancement" feature that slows down the whole thing?
Concerning rooting, mods, etc.: I don't care about customizing if the ROM is good. The only thing I want is a root access. Is this something we achieve without losing any functionality on Nougat ?
And last concern... how often do you see people complaining about defective units ?
You've been using this device for several months now... so you should been able to tell me how well it survived!
I really want to love this phone, but tell me if there's anything you don't like about it!
Thank you in advance!
Stick with your Z5C, that's the phone I wish I'd have bought instead of this. In future I'll always opt for older premium over newer mid range.

Thank you for your answer.
Can you tell me what's wrong with your XC?
Because I don't know if I had a defective unit or not, but overall I wouldn't recommend the Z5C for the reasons I gave in my OP.
I've had my ZC for about 2 months now and it's my favorite phone to date. Got tired of the huge screen phones, my last being the oneplusone.
The fingerprint scanner only works if you flash the uk firmware from what I've seen. I have not gotten around to it yet so I can't say how well it work but from my reading everyone says it works well.
I have had 0 overheating issues. It barely gets warm.
Honestly I love this phone. It's fast, has every feature I wanted and is the form factor I wanted also.
The ONLY thing I really hate about this phone is sony made it out of the slipperiest material on earth, but with a case/skin that goes away.

Can't comment on everything but I can answer a couple.
First off the phone doesn't over heat, ever. It may get a little warm at times but that's only if playing a ton of videos. And when I say a ton I mean from 100% battery down to zero. The Z5C chipset has always had heat issues. Granted it's not Sony's fault all phones had heat issues that used the 810. That's why Qualcomm was so quick to move away from the 810 back in the day when it first released. The XC uses a 650 which is basically the same thing as the 810 but it doesn't overheat. That being said it also has an extra gig of ram compared to the Z5C so it's a little snappier too imo. Granted the Z5C and the XC are both very close to one another.
I have never had an issue with the fingerprint sensor on the XC. As stated above you will need to flash the UK firmware to get it to work though. Has something to do with a patent dispute between Sony and whoever in the US at the moment.
Overall you can't go wrong either way. It sounds like you had a lot of issues with your Z5C so switching to the XC is probably worth a shot as it has dropped in price quite a bit since release. I have had mine since late October and haven't had an issue with it so far. Plus I am willing to bet the Z5C is coming to an end as far as Android updates go as to where the XC should at the very least get a bump up to 7.1 at some point if not more.

The colour first of all, it's blue, not Universe "Black", the icon on the power button is upside down, can't connect wireless to my PC and curved edges that makes applying a screen protector a real PITA.

The icon on the z5c is exactly the same, for what it's worth.
We have both xc and z5c. I lean towards the xc because it lasts longer per charge. It also seems to run cooler. It doesn't look as nice as the z5c, but I am not as worried about damaging it
I had a z5c, and switched to XC back in sep 2016, every 'issue' you mention has been fixed on XC. The fingerprint sensor is better, so is the screen. It would be odd otherwise.
The biggest flav of the z5c though is the a57 cores (the performance cluster of z5c) is the first 64bit soc rushed out to complete with apple that had just released their 64bit soc and lets be honest this core is notorious for overheating, my raspberry pi uses 4 of them too and both can not sustain their highest clock without getting insanely hot and throttle back the clock. I realize this only happens if you play games or do a synthetic stress test, use poorly coded apps like Facebook etc, most normal os operation only produces spikes which keeps the throttling down. Imho this is a horrible core compared with the a72. The power efficiency is also as you can imagine way better, I get alot more out of a single charge on this phone than I did with the z5c and it never gets hot, maybe a little handwarm if you play games or keep the screen on for hours like watching several movies. Nowhere near the z5c which was worryingly at times.
That's not to say I did not like the z5c but overall the XC is a great improvement in any aspect just as it is supposed to be.

Have you ever looked up at night ? Its not completely black either, its like a blackisblue. Furthermore I like it inside its black and outside you can see a different very dark blue color depending from which angle the light hits it. I am pretty sure it is on purpose and why its called universe black. I agree whether you like it or not is another matter.

Care to elaborate? Because like this guy I could not find an option in my phone either. This is the official answer from sony:
The feature to transfer files using Media transfer mode via Wi-Fi® has been removed in the Xperia™ Z4 Tablet and the Xperia™ Z5 series. Moreover, the Media transfer mode will not be available in Xperia™ Companion, the new tool that is replacing PC Companion, because Windows® 8.1 has removed the trigger menu.

Thank you everyone for your answers! You would be very good salesmen!
The Z5C was a bad experience, but I hope that this one will last me as long as my Nexus 4 did!
I bought it from a third-party seller on Amazon and should receive it in 2 weeks.
Also, I wanted to buy the black one at first... but the white one was cheaper, so I went for it (and I may even like it more in the end).
the camera opens in around 1 sec, 0.6 sec according to sony btw. I also dislike the photo enhancement that takes forever to apply and sharpen the image even on zxs. this is because sony decided to not use the performance cluster in the album app (I have no idea what they bumped their heads into) but as you I do not like it anyway as it over sharpens pictures and is way to aggressive. thankfully it can be disabled and pictures sharpen normally up in a instant, if I want to add more pow or adjust the colors etc I use a tool designed for that, usually i find the photo editor to be sufficient.
Good luck. I hope it serves you well. Initially i was sceptic too until I actually used it. (ie not just standing in a store flicking back and forth in the demo mode)
I didnt have time to read other comments but let me share my experience with you
Im a guy who changes phone after phone and a heavy android user but because I like to change phones I mostly buy good midrangers.
anyway this is the only phone that I have used it for more than 6 months( its almost 9) beside xperia sp some years ago.
The design really feels good in hand - but it gets scratches very easily so u might wanna look for a back protector or cover.
The performance is liquid smooth you are not gonna see any lags only if its app related, but I wished it was a better processor anyway.
Screen quality is super awesome you will enjoy looking at it every single time you use it.
Cpu have never went more than 45 C degrees but keep in mind that its a 28nm processor.
battery life is good goes up to 2 days with normal use
app loadings speed is perfect havent seen any better phone in this price range
fingerprint sensor is very good gets your id even with a little touch
speakers are not that good I can say that and Im noticing some wizzing noises sometimes...
in the end I really suggest you to buy it cause its way better than z5c and dont buy it only if you would go for XZ premium!
Just watch out for defective units there seem to be more than normal...
---------
Edit: I forgot to say the phone is waterproof I tested it myself but no body will answer you if you damage it because its not official...

I think it is going back...

Got my OP5 yesterday, just used it for less than a day but I think I am returning it... The following are the issues I have:
1. Wifi hotspot not working with Echo Dot. It can connect but can't play any music.
2. Battery life is not at all impressive... I started using it this morning at around 8am, and by noon it's down to 50%... That's my normal usage... kind of disappointing.
3. Picture quality not impressive... and don't like the camera app that much. Also saw that 4K video is very shaky without OIS.
So, maybe hang on to it for a few days before sending it back... Who else is returning?
BTW, what is the best way to ship it back (from San Diego to LA, I suppose)? I assume I need to pay for return shipment, and I probably want to have insurance to cover the cost of the device...
Contact OP to arrange a return. I have read on the forums that someone has already done this, and OP arranged a return label for the buyer.

What phone did you use prior to OP5?
I think #1 will be resolved. #2 may need a little more time to determine battery longevity. 24-48 is not enough.
Camera will probably get better. Video on 4k is a lost cause. TBH, 4k on any phone camera right now is not worth it. Buy a real camera for solid 4k footage.

I come from Moto X Pure, need to charge the phone every now and then even when it is new, and recently the battery is dying, I just have someone replaced it and now it's working fine. I will play with it a few more days, but the hotspot thing I am using it daily so it's troublesome, and don't know when or if it will be fixed. The weird thing is that I could tether my ipad to it and get Youtube and stuff alright.
Haven't gotten mine yet but have a question on the hotspot issue. Is this the normal hotspot that you would share your connection with say a tablet ECT? or something different? I use my hotspot everyday mon-fri to watch vids on my tablet during lunch. is that functionally working? or is the problem just with the echo dot?
also just my 10 cents on the 4k video. I'm not a YouTube vlogger and have no need to do anything in 4k so that is a non-issue for me. And like said above, 24 hours it not enough for a battery test.
I came from a OP3, and might be sticking with it to be honest. Prior to my OP3, I had a LG G2 (D802).
If I do send the OP5 back, I might be considering the LG G6.
My order still hasn't been despatch, and we are now into day 3 passed the despatch date (as my order despatch date was/estimated for 23rd June!)

The issue is very peculiar, affect only the Echo Dot, otherwise it seems ok. However my old phone Moto X Pure has no problem tethering my Echo Dot... I would think the WiFi Hotspot is a standard feature of the OS...

I like the fingerpint sensor in the front... LG G6 has it in the back. Actually the OP5 is very good in that regards, fingerprint sensor on home button, and then capacitive buttons for back and recent, saving some screen space, so although it's 5.5 inch, effectively it is comparable to my 5.7 inch Moto X Pure....
Just installed another system update... let me use it for a couple more days and see if I change my mind...
Got mine Saturday, I like it so far, only thing I will say is the edge from glass to frame doesn't seem smooth. I don't know if it's my phone of if they are all like it though.

You do know there is a screen protector on it right and the screen is only 2D not 3D and I believe everyone's it like that it should look like the screen is a little bit tucked in the frame

Yes the screen protector doesn't cover the whole glasss and it's the bit from the edge of glass to frame that just isn't smooth like the OP3T I have. It's almost like the glass is sunk too far in to the frame causing a slight lip to it.
I'm deciding whether or not to RMA mine; I am coming from OP 3 and the change isn't that large to warrant 589.00$ so far. I'll decide tomorrow.
I kind of like my OP5. But I come from OPO,s quite an update for me.
I'm slightly surprised a few OP3 owners have upgraded to the OP5. Apart from the camera, I just can't see the reason for upgrading. Its not as if the OP3 is slow, has bad support or has a major hardware issue.
To the OP3 owners who have upgraded. Is there really that much difference? Is the difference worth the money?

I do not even see the need to upgrade for the camera.
Sure, a wider aperture sounds better in lowlight and the second sensor with zoom and portrait mode is a nice addition.
But apart from the camera reviews (some don't even sound that good), all comparison shots on the OP3 look as good, sometimes even better than the OP5. The sensor has the same size, so we still see the same slow shutter-speed in lowlight which will cause more blur due to handshake and the missing OIS. Even in daylight (especially with HDR) I've seen shots which were heavily postprocessed waterpaintings because of handshake.
This device certainly has less value for money compared to the OP3 back then. It's still affordable, but you basically get what you pay for.
If Samsung e.g. built a device with the same specs, it would probably not cost that much more after a short period of time.

I had issues connecting PS3 controller to phone, I couldn't get it to work nor via BT nor via USB. It seems that they not included some drivers in OP5 kernel, so I installed first available custom kernel which seems to have all standard drivers and now I have no problems connecting PS3 controller via BT and USB. That may be can solve your problem too and other problems related to connecting to external devices.

Yea, I compared 3T and 5 photos and 3T has way more details even in low light. OP5 details are all watercolored. I see no point in upgrading from OP3T. But as I come from Galaxy S4 I will probably keep mine OP5.
Coming from the oneplus 3 I can honestly say it's an improvement, loving the oneplus 5.
