[Q] ROM with Verizon Overseas Roaming and International Data Use Support. . . - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The title pretty much sums it up. I travel A LOT internationally. I have the Razr M which is running quite slow at the moment after 2 1/2 years of consistent use. I'd like to root and put on a custom ROM, however when I've done this in the past I've had serious issues connecting to data services while roaming.
Can anyone confirm that they continuously use a Razr M with a custom ROM on a consistent basis internationally and have no problem connecting to different roaming networks?
I'm open to any particular ROM, I haven't been running anything custom since CM7 years ago. . . If it won't connect to data when roaming I will not do it however.
Anyways I would sincerely like to apologize if there is a thread on this topic, I have searched exhaustively but the words "roaming" and "international" obviously bring up all kinds of unnecessary other threads.

[Q] Motorola Droid Pro In India

Hi,
Can anyone let me know how can I buy a Motorola Droid Pro in India.
Based on your experiences (connectivity, keyboard, battery time) can you tell me if procuring one is worth it.
I am looking forward to use the same in India.
Awaiting your reply.
Regards,
Mac
Funny you should ask- I just got back from Mumbai a few days ago. Not sure if 3G is available, but for the entire time I was there, I was switching between EDGE and 2G CDMA networks. Not particularly quick, and battery life was sucked down FAST. Not sure if that was only because I was roaming internationally, but unless you have a 3G connection, it might not be worth the extra expense.

My Samsung Galaxy S2 3G Speeds Are Very Slow

I got really happy today when I discovered XDA developers through Google. There seems to be a wealth of information on this forum.
I recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2 in India and I have to say, the quality exceeded my expectations, seriously.
I also signed up for Airtel's 3G service, and the service was working fine for the first 2-3 days with speeds exceeding ~3mbps (>3000kbps).
However, here is where my problem started:
Just a couple of days back I was simultaneously downloading a bunch of free Apps from the Marketplace and somewhere in the middle my 3G speeds dropped. I seriously don't know what happened. I have the flexible package from Airtel which gives 1.25 gigabytes, and according to my phone, I've used only 550 megabytes at that time.
Now, my speeds are locked at 40kbps (according to Speedtest and web browsing experience) and I don't if it is my phone having the issue or if it is my SIM or Airtel Prepaid account (I am 99.9% percent I have not exceeded the balance or else talktime would have already been deducted by now), or a technical glitch on Airtel's server-end.
I have tried disabling / enabling fast dormancy, disabling / enabling HSPDA, configuring WCDMA Only, and manually configuring the Airtel settings. Yet, none of that worked.
I am feeling very frustrated and would appreciate any help in addressing this matter. Thanks in advance.
There are a couple of Indian specific threads that you'd be better off getting help in. This is the biggest one...

I would like to read feedback from folks around the world as well.
I've already gone through the mentioned Indian thread and I have to say, it requires a moderator.
Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
same problem on t-mobile
i bought the sgs2 2 months ago , i live in the us now and i bought it unloked from amazon. i put my simcard from tmobile in it , previously was using a nexus one. i have unlimited data plan but only get edge speeds on it which is very frustrating. on the nexus i was getting 3g speeds. one time while i was driving (i live in florida) i managed to get a 3g signal but the speeds were still in the edge range. most of the time i`m using wifi, but since i`m paying for the data plan, id like for my phone to be able to use it.
if anybody would be able to enlighten me about how to go about my problem i would appreciated it.

You won't get 3g speeds on tmobile because sgs2 doesn't have the necessary tmobile 3g bands. If you want 3g and hspa+ speeds thru sgs2, switch to att.

Unfortunately for us (My SGS2 will arrive later today) T-mobile uses different 3G/4G bands than most other carriers worldwide.... so we are stuck with EDGE (2G)
On a side note how are the speeds when browsing on EDGE? Is it painfully slow? If so try downloading Opera mini it should help quite a bit since it renders everything server side
thanks
thanks for the prompt answers , after a little research i`ve found out exactelly the same thing, that i have to switch to at&t to get better speeds and i probably will.
yes , surfing on 2g is horribly slow and my 70$ unlimited plan is useless
just did a speedtest 133kbps/down 94k up , ridiculous :'(
Any suggestions or advices for the 3G problems
HI, I am also facing the same problem of 3G of low speeds any updates regarding this?
Any chance your provider might be throttling your speeds based on usage behaviour?
Took mine to service center, having the same simptoms as described by you, the resolution was: faulty motherboard -> replace. Not a firmware issue...a hardware one.

Anyone tethering with Note on ATT? Are they detecting it?

As many of you know att was busting users tethering. I dont really use it all that often and since all the talk about att catching people tethering, i thought i would never be able to use it ever again, IF i needed too. Some times share with the klids phones if we are mobile. They dont have data.
Ive turned it on a couple times testing. I connected the laptop to it and loaded "a" page. I havent gotton any emails yet, or ever.
I was just wondering, since this is not an att phone, and there is no tether manager, should we be able to tether without getting detected?
I thought for sure there was going to be a topic already here, but theres not???? my search didnt turn up andything!!

I made mine a wireless hotspot for my friends for about an hour and a half like two weeks ago and they didn't say anything to me or kick me off my data plan.
Thank for posting this! I was wondering as well!
They probably won't say anything so long as you keep within your data cap. Going over it and they will likely scold you...

No issues here...tethering away and remembering not to be a hog. Don't abuse it.

Thank you!
When I had the HTC Evo I also had the tethering option ($30/month) but, fortunately, my company was picking up 90% of the tab. Now that my Evo is gone and I have a company provided iP4 I can't tether.
I have mixed feeling about tethering as it is a useful tool to have but also very easy to abuse. The problem with the abuse is that it eats into the bandwidth that I need for more casual usage and therefore negatively impacts my usage. I have heard of folks using of 50GB/month and if even a very small fraction of people did that there would be no cellular network that would survive.
When I get the Note I will probably go with the 4GB plan and have tethering. During my time with the Evo I averaged about 600MB/month including tethering, but with the Note I think the data use will go up because it will be far more useful and practical to surf the net and I think I'll probably go over 2GB/month. I will have to see what my data use actually is and if 2GB/month is enough and I can still tether than maybe that will be the way to go.
I don't see the need to try to game the system all that much and am willing to pay for what I use...

I've tethered with my Dell streak for over a year, never had an issue.
You just have to stay under the radar. Start downloading ISO size files, and you can bet you will get dinged.
I have been tethering illicitly for almost a year, first on my rooted SGS and now my Note, because that's been my only available "broadband" connection where I live (and I only get about 300kbps down even on HSPA 3g... very oversubscribed towers around here).
I got the dreaded warning letter from AT&T a couple months ago, where they politely suggested that I need to upgrade my plan to include tethering...and if I continue tethering, they will eventually do it for me.
That was a few months ago and they haven't done it yet, though I did back off on my data consumption after I got that letter (I stand to lose my unlimited data plan as well as seeing my monthly bill go up by $30).
I suspect that they infer that you're tethering based on your traffic, and that they can't actually tell whether you have tethering enabled on your rooted phone. E.g. if you're doing a lot of bittorrenting and connecting to sites like Windowsupdate.com, those would be pretty big clue that you're running a PC over your connection.
I rarely use my PC any more, and no more bt :-( so I am hoping they will continue to let my occasional small amount of tethering slide. And if they don't, I may just upgrade to a Verizon 4g LTE mifi instead, since that is now available in my area

I'm on att and with android phones I've been tethering for almost two years with no problem. It included the Nexus one, the galaxy tab, the inspire 4g, the unlocked sgs2 and now the Note. I frequently used the tethering option to connect my galaxy tab 10.1. I average 5GB a month and have never gotten any warning.

I'm based in the UK so i don't have any useful input, I just find this article interesting. Your guys network operators over in the US sound like nazis. and I thought ours were bad?
I've seen a few networks over here include tethering as a "bolt-on" style upgrade to a price plan, but my question is, how the hell do they know? like with my SGS, tethering is part of the phone, so it was my understanding that they couldn't tell (unless you had anormal traffic - but with phones getting better processors surely that kind of traffic will very soon, if not already, be possible without tethering?)

yeah, like I said: I don't think they can actually tell you have tethering enabled, so if the only devices you're connecting to your AP are other phones, they likely will never figure it out. But if you connect a Mac or PC much, watch out.
UPDATE: AT&T finally forced me into their tethering plan. I put my SIM into an old dumb phone, went online and changed the phone model on my acct, and they automatically dropped me back into my old unlimited data plan. Swapped the SIM back into the Note, all better again
We'll see how long it lasts, but since I'm not tethering anymore (just got a Verizon LTE Mifi) I will probably drop my data pan down to the minimum 200mb and save another $15/mo.
I'm seriously looking into switching all four of my lines over to Verizon now!

Possibly coming to Sprint and leaving Verizon: need help opinions and info please!

Hello to all in this Forum.
I am starting here because I have a Galaxy S4 with Verizon and it has served me well for years and does everything I need.... so why look elsewhere.
It also seems that there is still alot of good development for the S4 here with yall on Sprint.
The reason for leaving Verizon is that to keep my Unlimited Data for two phones my bill is close to $270.00 dollars a month.
We just cant keep doing that any more.
SOOO What I am trying to find out is with Sprint is:
*Is the service good number one?
*Can you easily get TWRP on any phone ( which is best) is the S4 a good contender?
*Can you get a WiFi hotspot easily?
*If you can get a WiFi hotspot how many GigaBytes before they Throttle, how bad is the Throttling?
I use well over 100 Gb of data a month per line with Verizon..... Will Sprint poo poo a brick and shut me down if I do that with them?
We live in the country and the Verizon phone is our only source of Internet. We broadcast our Hotspot and do Netflix, and Amazon Prime as this is our only source of TV.
I looked on a map recently, It shows in my area the best coverage for 4G LTE. The LTE plus is not bad either.... although I dont know what phone uses LTE plus.
Any help or thoughts on this would be SOOOO much appreciated. This would be a huge and scary jump for us because once you lose Unlimited with Verizon... you'll never get it back, and right now they work and do everything very well...... We just pay through the Nose for it.
Thank you!!

x820, x822, x829, etc. experiences with US based carriers

The back story is that I bought 2 of the Max 2 phones, one x820 and one x822, one of which was supposed to be grey, but the seller screwed up and sent a rose gold. So I have two in that color. The wife fell in love with her phone, and I really liked the build quality, as I have broken lesser phones. Otherwise, I probably would have dumped them and bought something else.
So here's what I have found so far:
AT&T: If you are in an area with good coverage (multiple towers or access points), these phones will probably serve you well. In my case, I was not so lucky. My home usage is in an area that is too close to the only tower in my area. You read that correctly, I am too close to a tower. Full bars, but unable to make or receive a call on 3G. And if you happen to share my unfortunate circumstance, then there are no options to make the phone work for you, with the exception of a microcell, which has very limited range in such a situation. No WiFi calling, and while LTE works perfectly, no VoLTE on AT&T with this phone makes this a non-starter. If you can work within the limitations of the network, any of the available ROMS will likely work well.
T-Mobile: This is the best carrier I have found for this phone, if you are not concerned with the lack of LTE in areas where T-Mobile does not have native coverage. You must also enroll in a pre-pay and autopay plan, to make sure that you will not be billed roaming charges in these areas. While I am still in an area served by AT&T, T-Mobile offers WiFi calling features which actually work with the US 16s ROM on my two phones. Not only does it work, but it works well, with HD call quality between two capable devices. Call quality is even improved by the WiFI calling to standard devices. This solved my issue of the phones not working in my home location, and they still work fine on the AT&T network (used by T-mobile for roaming) a couple hundred meters from the problem area. I also recently visited an area served natively by T-Mobile, and the experience was even better. Fast LTE data, and unlike AT&T, when a call is made while connected to LTE, it does not drop to 3G. The phone stays on LTE and VoLTE works great. Even when calling landlines, and other non-VoLTE capable phones, the phone stays locked onto LTE frequencies. Again, with the US 16s ROM. Until developers can incorporate WiFi calling and VoLTE as implemented by this ROM, it's really the only option if you need both of these features. VoLTE may work with T-Mobile on other ROMS, but you may experience issues in some areas while roaming off of their network.
So I have finally found a workable solution which allows me to keep and make good use of my X820 and X822 phones, and that was switching to T-mobile. I feel that this company is simply structured better to support unlocked, lesser known phones. And based on my limited data usage, I'll probably even save $20 a month (bonus.)
A lot of this information is scattered through multiple threads, but I thought it might be a good idea to have a dedicated thread to discuss or share real experiences with carriers in the US for the x820, X822, x829, etc... phones. It would be particularly interesting to know if someone has actually been able to use these phones on the Verizon or other CDMA networks with a SIM card. All of this info will be helpful to others.:good:
Thank you very much for your feedback.
I recently purchased an X829 that arrived with the modified US 5.8.16 rom, and i have been seriously considering installing either the latest indian rom, or one of the custom eui roms (Cuouco92, SmallEUI... Etc), but the possibility of losing VoLTE and Wifi Calling, has stopped me from doing it, since it works so well for me with T-mobile.
I am interested to find out about Verizon 4G as well, several sites are reporting that it will work, but I need someone to confirm it from a 1st hand experience.
My Lenovo Zuk Z2 is working on VZN 4G with no issues.
Trentbg were you able to figure out if Verizon works on the le max 2?
