[Q] How many of M8 owners had build quality issues? - One (M8) General

How many of you have had any issues with the device having scratches out of the box, or things like uneven/bad screen or speaker fit?
In fact, lets do any issues at all with the device.
I only had one M8 in my hands in the shop here in Austria and the bottom left edge had the fit problem which was very noticeable.
Also, I noticed that "rainbowing" when pressing the screen a little (anywhere).
Damn forgot multiple choice..

Yes but naturally mostly people with problems post there, there is no poll.
I want to know if there really are so many "defective" units among this forum.

Ok, didn't see poll Oh well then. Either way no defects for me so far *touch wood*

I really like this phone, it's perfect for me, only thing I'm worried about is the camera, and obviously the quality concerns.

Finally, my 4th HD2, a FLAWLESS device !!

As you may have read before, I was really complaining because of the poor voicecall quality, screen alignment with the plastic cover and many other flaws. I have replaced my device twice and got each time a different problem. I decided not to give up...
Today, I got my 4th HD2 and the earpiece problem is GONE!!
The first thing I did was to have a look at the screen. It is perfectly flush/aligned with the cover. It used to be either deeper somewhere at the corners or higher.
The problem with the light sensor doesn't exist anymore and after more than 12 hours of extensive testing, I can say I don't have any problem with machine anymore. Finally a flawless HD2.
One thing I've noticed ( because I'm used to register all my devices the 1st day I buy it ) that the serial number is almost the same as the 1st device having too many problems, the difference is like 372 only and the 4th HD2 is even older than all the previous handsets ( Manufacture date: 2nd of Nov. 2009 )
I believe that this is not a problem with some specific affected batches. IMHO, it is random...
Hope that helped
I didn't follow your previous thread. Do you have a summary on the problems you encountered and may I ask how you proceeded with your reclamation? Was it directly with HTC or through your vendor?
I also notice that my screen isn't perfectly aligned with the cover, it's a bit of gap to the top right, whereas on the top left i don't feel any gap. This doesn't kill me but if there are handsets that are perfectly made, I want one when I'm paying this much money. I also encounter sparkling sounds when talking, specially when using the speaker.

Actually I was forced to sell the devices because they refused to consider the problems as well known... I lost around 100 Euros but got a good device after all... you know we all like perfectionism
Some of the problems like I mentioned :
-The screen not correctly aligned with the plastic cover
-Crackling and noisy earpiece when making voicecalls
-Very loose hardware keys and buttons. They are not rock solid now but way better
-Light sensor behavior was somehow weird. Doesn't always work, dont ask me why
- Screen jitters like the ones posted on youtube.
you can also have a look here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=590425

Yes, so as to be perfectly aligned after applying the screen protector. I installed mine two days ago and now the screen is perfectly aligned.

It's a glass screen, no protector is required. Most HD2 screens are flush with the rubber/plastic sides - there isn't a recess, I would say the ones that aren't flush are manufacturing defects.
I've had 2 HD2s so far and both have the earpiece issue. The 2nd had what felt like poor fitting keys initially, but over the week I've had the phone they've bedded in nicely and now have perfect feel.
I'm just going to put up with the earpiece quality for now, it's not perfect but I'm sure future ROMs will reduce the volume which should be a good start.
Ah Im glad you finally got one that works for you
Hope you enjoy it
Im loving mine Im not as much as a noob as I was when I first posted a month or so ago, where I got flamed
I think I only have the two following problems:
-The screen not correctly aligned with the plastic cover
-Crackling and noisy earpiece when making voicecalls
The buttons are a bit loose but I didn't even notice that before someone else told me about it.
But I totally agree with you, I'm also a perfectionist, but I doubt I'll make any effort beyond contacting the support and see what happens. Specially the bad sound quality.
Oh well, I'm glad you finally found a nice piece. Take care of it now, don't drop it or scratch it
Ah you managed getting another one
Good luck with it! Treat it carefully

How did you get the information about the manufacture date of your device?
It would be really interessting for me to, when my device was builded.
Thank you in advance!
Xeon,
You seem to have gone through quite a few devices so, if you don't mind me asking, does your device have a rattle in the head of the device. I have got replies from quite a few people saying it is normal, but a few also don't have it. It's really starting to annoy me, I thought I'd live with it, but not sure I can now. Shaking the device hardly makes a sound, however, tapping it lightly near the camera gives me a big rattle.
Thanks in advance
My phone has a rattle toward the head area, and upon close examination, it appears to come from the camera at the top ofthe phone.
Since our phone doesn't havevs fixed focus lens, I'm assuming the rattle noise isthe autofocus mechanism. Therefore the noise is perfectly normal in my opinion.
Actually i think you are a bit too paranoic. That's fine, was same with me when I bought it and I think with everyone else. This feeling comes away after 1-2 months of actually using the phone rather than staring at it as at faberge egg from 2cm away everyday to find a scratch or a piece of dustd
p.s. - hardware keys are made that way for a reason and every hd2 has them the same way
NO actually mine doesnt ratltle but I discovered I got a faulty screen with the 4th device... shaking screen/cardio/untyped keys... the screen starts acting weird sometimes. IMO the last device is the worst as the noise problem during phone conversation wasn't solved and the distortion is so much annoying....
**** HTC, I am sorry to say it but nothing more to be expected from a device Made in Taiwan...
That's my last device, mark my words.

You know where the iPhone is made, do you? And besides the iPhone, pretty much every electronic device you're using...
[sarcastic] You're really lucky man! [/sarcastic]
My first HTC HD2 got broken and I've changed it, bought another HTC HD2.
Noticed that its build quality is really excellent compared to my old HD2 (that was one of the first produced), I've only had some weird problems with the touchscreen like yours, but I've solved it pressing it in the four HD2 angles: now the screen is more IN the device housing in the top right angle, but all of my digitizer problems are now solved.
Now my HTC HD2 is perfect.
Try with that.
Ouh, and remember that the noise in conversation can be a ROM problem!
Mine had too, but updating to the newer TMOUS radios I don't have it anymore!
Just software/network problems
And.. don't be paranoic, the PERFECT thing doesn't exist (talking of the rattle..)!

OK Apple is robbing people and HTC is following.. thank you.
And no.. Nokia is made in Finland and some other European countries including Germany. You can guess that by looking at the serial number that's why you get what you pay for...
Sony low end laptops are made in china but high end ones are made in Japan like the S/Z/T series... You see, you pay for a top notch device that much of money expecting it to be almost fault free. With HTC you never know, it's all about luck.
It makes me laugh reading how many people here got a faulty handset. When someone states a problem experienced with his heaset, the first answer is " seems you got a faulty device"
For god's sake a fault should not affect more than 0.5% of the devices.. but with HTC, it's like a feature; each client gets a different problem with the hardware. I can't tolerate the polls results.. Like the one with Weird touch screen behavior and issues. More than 55% have a buggy screen.. I know that it's not a case study nor a realistic accurate interpretation but it gives you a clear idea about what's going on.
I swear on my mother's life that this device( including all the previous 3 ) has the worst call quality a handset could produce. Believe me everytime I make/get a call I start blaspheming. I burned more than 1000$ on this device but thanks I took the lesson.
I still have my HD which is almost flawless compared to this product but slow as hell.
Don't mention iphone and apple things as I'm not apple fan-boy
Well, reasoning is obviously no strength of yours. Sad.

Just got mine from Amazon my first one but I notice the light bleed...

I just got my TF today and I'm loving every bit of it especially with the keyboard dock. When I first turned on my TF I notice the light bleed I guess it's pretty noticiable but I really don't wanna go through all the stress of returning or What if's...My question is does the light bleed expand or could it cause any issue to the hardware??? If not than I could live with it...
No it will stay as it is now, no harm will be done and it won't get worse. I have some on mine, I'm sure everybody does to some extent but I'm not bothered by it enough to return it either especially because everything else seems fine.
Really?
And what exactly is the purpose of this thread?
Do you not realize there are literally a hundred just like it?

No really...please explain what you are trying to accomplish with this thread as I am curious.

Because of the magnitude of the number of threads on XDA, searching for your answers could prove to be quite difficult. Assuming the OP searched beforehand, I wouldn't hold it against him for posting what he did. Cut the guy some slack and if you have a problem with it, just dont reply. No need to make yourself look like a troll.

I'm certain of it, I mentioned in another post a while back and someone else replied that they were in the same situation. I'd handled it with kid gloves, no knocks or drops and I didn't have a dock to slot it into, so that couldn't have been a possible cause either.
I believe a lot of people saying "I didn't have any" but then report seeing it a day or so after purchase is a trick of the light.
For the first 12 hours I had my Transformer at the office, I was happy I had no bleed even on full brightness & a dark background (it was the first thing I checked) - Yey for me.
Soon as I got home and was out of a very well lit office and back under home lighting I could see 2 bleed spots quite obvious on the device (one on the bottom, one of the left - landscape).
Back in the office next day. Can't see them no matter how I look.
There's a little in mine, it's not expanding at all in a month or so. Only ever noticeable on boot...and that's about it.
I tend to not watch the credits in film at 100% brightness anyhow, so it's not like I ever notice it.
If I wanted to experience pure darkness, I'd lock myself in a basement and turn off the lights.

The purpose of this thread (like 40 percent of other posters) is just to post some negative crap on this forum.
It didn't occure to them to post in the other 'let make it up as we go along light bleed' thread.

The 'i'm a jealous GTab fanboy owner, and i get very upset when i still see waiting lists mentioned for the Transformer, so i thought i would come over here and post crap' thread.

No! i've had two myself, and know of three others, none of them have any light bleed or build quality issues.
I don't see any other forums loaded with negative crap, i haven't seen any reviews that mention it, and if it's so bad like people on here try to make out how come there hasn't been a recall? why aren't any of these issues mentioned on the android rss feeds? if every single transformer has an issue why have there been no enquires by the likes of ipad fanboys over at engadget? they'd love a knock Android story like this! if only that had some facts/samples to back it up with.
People on here try and make out like they've all got it, where it's more likely it's a couple of dodgy ones have got through quality control, (Asus of course do have it, unlike what people on here would like to have us believe).
At a guess (and this is purely a guess) I'd say most people never notice this under normal lighting conditions. A lot of people don't notice the juddering in video playback for instance. Even when I showed them a video and pointed it out to them most found it hard to see what I was seeing.
You cannot generalize on these things. It's only people who are really anal who tend to make a big deal of this stuff. Visit any AV forum for instance and you will get a hardcore few like myself going on about stuff like floating blacks on Panasonic plasma HDTV's etc
Most people are not enthusiasts however and happily use their devices without even realizing they have a problem.
But I will add this. It is us few anal individuals who make a fuss that ensure products are improved upon and quality control remains high. So everyone benefits in the end.
Just a note: Contrary to most of this thread, light bleed can get worse. However, only if the device is also exhibiting the "creaking" defect. A loose build can result in more obvious light bleed. Applying a lot of pressure (abnormal amounts!) can also make the bleed worse if the Transformer isn't properly sealed.

Good grief! Just because you haven't seen the faults or quality issues, doesn't mean that they don't exist and it doesn't mean that others are just talking negative crap as you put it!
Why hasn't there been a recall? I suspect that it's more cost effective for Asus, to wait and hear from those that aren't prepared to put with the quality issues, rather than issue a blanket recall which would be costly and would likely attract negative press. RMA is the simplest for them.
BTW, I'm not having a go at you and I'm genuinely glad that you haven't had problems with your TF's, but please don't try and make out that some of us are just making this up.

Eh. I see the same "negative crap" on other forums, as well. The Hardforum topic on the Transformer is also full of people with issues.
The simple fact is quality control on the device is horrid... but good devices are out there.
There are numerous samples. I have two defective devices in my room, right now, waiting for me to ship them back to Asus. One is a keyboard dock that the tablet will not duck flushly with, and the other is a Transformer with horrendous backlight bleed, dust under the screen, and a stuck pixel.
On the other hand, my friend owns a Transformer and has no problems whatsoever. I've messed around with his device and it's near flawless -- very, very minimal bleed, not visible during usual use, and no screen problems. Balanced speakers, no dust, etc, etc.
It's a damn good device. Asus did a good job with the concept and the end result is usually extremely nice. Usually.

The Galaxy Note Is Not Faulty.

Polls here show the vast majority of Notes are not faulty, so the faults reported here from the minority are probably typical for any leading edge smart phone. No device is guaranteed 100% fault free which is why manufacturers provide a warranty.
You're right! Many people come to XDA to seek help, some to vent their frustrations. But most of us are happy users. If only each happy user were to start a thread about how great their phone is!
Not a good idea at all; I'm just kidding!

All peoples do have a different views about what are acceptable and not. Some do accept the minor flaws and others dont.
One thing for sure, are all Notes owners do have these screen/video issues that already mentioned in the threads, some more/others less visible and some just accept it, others dont.
Can be many reasons, why peoples see them not a issue and maybe think future updates might fix it. Or just dont watch video alot on the phone, others features they like on the Note and makes them to keep it, or for whatever reasons.
The Note might is not faulty, but really do have issues and up to everyone to decide.
Its different between, faulty and issues.
I only count no more then 7 people with issues on the front page. Banding is a known thing on amoled screens and we all know that's a software issue.
I've tried all the steps and have seen no issues. I find the witch hunt funny. There's nothing to accept, when my phone doesn't show vertical lines nor dark spots.
If you have to crawl to a dark spot, triple check the brightness level, and use a app that shows complete white/gray screen to find a dead pixel or lines then I think the issue is bigger than the phone.
Now if its something you can see with normal everyday use, then that's a different story.

You cannot say for sure what all Note owners have experienced on their phones. However, it is very clear from the polls here that the vast majority of owners do not find the phone faulty. It is not up to the minority to try and convince the majority that they are wrong, but to convince the person they bought it from that it is faulty if they want action taken.

There is the point of a the human brain it thinks what do i need what do i have is it suited for me is a noticable problem and how much will it be fixed with a software upgrade can i wait till then.
My phone has black lines vertical horizontal on gray with low brightness. I see them when i test it with a gray background i am not runing with a gray wallpaper arround. Problem with crap designed apks or whatever is it that cant handle the 24bit from the display aka xda and skype application launch wallpaper with blue brown stripes not be fluid on transition. It may be a phone software problem not apps. Another problem it has black squares on dark video scenes. It brings me in memory my pc from 1999 or so and first stages of windows 2k a mix of unstable 1998windows and windows NT which was the most gosu windows they had it was something like linux/unix. And last but not least S Pen problem on photo editor on portait mode it cant draw on the edge of the same side that has bin configuired the spen. Ohh forgot the pink dot on macro pictures with camera on white page with low light.
I see three solutions
1. Avoid the contions which replicate the problems and be happy with the most imba gosu wtf lovely smartphone outthere till they fix them and you can do all things without thinking about those issues.
2. Wait till they fix the problems and buy the phone. But i would say buy it now and wait for a fix you will not be dissapointed. BUT DONT BUY IT VIA ONLINE A SHOP NEAR YOU IS BETTER MAY BE A BIT MORE MONEY BUT THE SERVICE IS A MUST FOR ME. from net go buy **** items max 100 bucks not more so you dont cry your money. My oppinion about online shoping. I want to buy a ue40d8090 on shop 1499€ on net 1297€, but if i have a problem the 200€ isnt worth it the calls and stress and the days to send wait for it back.
3. Go buy a other flawless phone like iphone 4s plx if you cant live with those problems.

I'm not sure what' your point is here. Yes, most first gen devices have some bugs to be worked out and the Note has some of those. I will say that it is the only phone I have ever had to return because of such a serious flaw but that can happen and I will still be using a Note because it's such an overall great device. Forums, whether tech or not, will always bring out the questions, concerns and minority problem finders but at $700+, people are going to want a device that performs.

I would have thought my title for this thread makes my point very clearly. Polls here show the vast majority of owners do not find that their phone is faulty when using it, me included. So the minority who fear all Notes might be faulty can feel re-assured and make a claim under the warranty.

I had broken iphone after broken iphone, then I got sick of having to send it back again and again for faulty batteries, broken screens, burnt out displays and messed up home buttons. Yes, 4 iphones in 1 year. That's the MOST i've ever had to exchange a phone. I on the other have had this SGS2 for 8 months, and still working. I have had blackberries last longer. My 9700 lasted a LONG time, it was a great device. I will NEVER buy another iPhone again just due to their quality control. I love their CS. I got a new phone every time, but still, I shouldn't need to go a full month without a phone over the course of a year just because their QC is lame. Regardless, I know the majority of people love their iphones because it's simple and people want simplicity, Give me options over simplicity any day
But I get your point. Still, the Note is a FANTASTERASTIC device

I would have thought my title for this thread makes my point very clearly. Polls here show the vast majority of owners do not find that their phone is faulty when using it, me included. So the minority who fear all Notes might be faulty can feel re-assured and make a claim under the warranty.

I guess that would be the point of the poll in the first place.

My Note works flawlessly.

Agreed.
Aside from a small number of definite manufacturing faults, there are large numbers of complaints triggered by ignorance and disinformation on review sites and such.
I count complaints about banding, pentile screen artifacts, battery drain, IS/IS NOT Gorilla glass as witch hunt bs.
As I said in a similar thread, people tend to come to forums with problems looking for solutions. Citing unknown 'polls' for information isn't very productive either. This thread is closed.

HTC ONE Buyers Guide

Hi guys,
as most of you here, I`m planing on buying THE ONE as soon as it gets to the stores in our country.
Because of that I started checking and reading the general ONE forum almost 15 times a day . One of the most important things for me, when I buy a phone and give like 600+ euro, is for the phone to be as perfect as possible at least the first couple of months.
That`s why I decided to make this thread as a guide that explains the main things you should watch for when buying the phone from your store !
1. Take a look at all sides of the phone and see if there are any GAPS or OVERHANGS, cause its a "unibody" design after all. Here are some pictures and link to original thread, where this problem is discussed:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-...AAAAAAFc/34GVNAI3mKc/s661/20130319_152241.jpg - GAP
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/djbenny1/DSCF8356_zps0597f759.jpg - OVERHANG
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2197732 - Original thread
2. See also if there aren't any gaps near the volume rocker, and if it doesn't stick while you press it (incl. the power button). I remember that one member here had a similar problem, but cannot find the OP.
3. After you power on the phone try to connect to internet (all major stores have free wifi) and download a Dead Pixel Test app from the store. Then check for any dead pixels on that gorgeous screen !
4. I bought a nexus 7 tablet some months ago and got a replacement, because of a bad headphone jack design. What that leads to is a cracking sound from headphones, when you just plug them and navigate through menus or slide through main screens, but don't listen to music or watching video. Many devices suffer from a problem like that, so I test that always in the store, either with the pair of headphones in the box, or with my own ones. In many cases that means poor shielding and can affect more parts in the phone itself.
5. Camera firmware (latest batch) : According to a camera test published here - http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/review-htc-ones-camera-tested , pre-production units had some kind of a hardware issue and that's why many photos taken with the device seemed blurry on the edges.
So it's really good to know, how can we check if the unit we are buying is from the latest batch or not ... will update this when I have more info.
OP can be found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206222
6. Phone display: this is where I`m a bit confused really. Here is the thread, where I read that the ONE can have different display characteristics in terms or color temperature, contrast and brightness.
Would be very happy if someone can explain that in details and suggest if this is something we must watch for, before buying our unit.
Original thread can be found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2202869
That covers the main things that I`m aware of till the moment. If you have any more suggestions, I would be happy to update the OP.
Also some more clarifications about 5. and 6. would be great :cyclops:
And one really important question which I would like to ask and don`t want to make another thread for : how does the heat affect the casing and is it a problem if the device gets too hot (cause I love to use it for gaming sometimes). In other words: Could a GAP or OVERHANG occur after some usage, because of the phone reaching high temperature?
Here you can see a thread, where guy speaks about a 44,4°C device temperature : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2207645
UPDATE :
5. According to https://plus.google.com/+PhilNickinson/posts/BkaNVpcNySN it seems like its a software update after all, and not a hardware one ...
And here is a good guide on how to check if your phone is from a later batch or not : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2209277
Great write up. Will definitely use this guide.

Can you really even see a dead pixel on this screen? I have one on my EVO 4G LTE and I can only see it if I use the Dead Pixel Test app.
You can once you've noticed the bloody thing. It taunts you. Although on this screen, probably not so noticeable unless it's against a plane background. Annoying all the same.
Surely you can find something that you can convince yourself is a flaw that will make you miserably unhappy with your new One. Then sell it to me...
If the casing heats up so much it distorts, you probably want to put it down. That'll be well in excess of 400°C, no matter what the alloy.

When you pay a lot of money for a device, you expect it to be perfect, right ?

Yes, but a line does need to drawn...
There will always be a gap, it's not like atoms are physically connected together, even in a solid like metal.

You pay 500 odd quid, or what ever, for a device that's been marketed for its build quality and craft....
If you find a flaw, you should have a replacement.
Although I have pre-ordered a HTC One, I'm hoping i get some sort of super batch. Slightly worried, for a phone thats not even out yet, there seems to be many issues.
As long as mine comes with no overlap or gaps and works perfectly, I'm happy.
Unfortunately these items are mass produced and the original batches more than likely will have some flaws in them, mostly minor, but like others have mentioned. You pay this much for a phone, you want it to be perfect.
Awesome write up OP!

We are still clarifying in the thread whether there is a higher contrast version of the screen and what its color temperature is. Just stay tuned. I keep the first post updated with the latest information.
How do I check if its first batch or not?

Build Quality - Including all latest problems

Hey guys,
So I saw no one have opened a thread like this and was kinda wondering If I'm just saying non-sense stuff or im on to something :silly:.
After About 2 and a half months that the phone was announced and started selling out there were many problems with the build quality discovered, After reading many topics I noticed that actually All of the phone's problems relate to the top part of the phone!
1) Camera-Lens breaking down without a reason.
2) many gaps between the top of the screen and the aluminium body (sometimes people can even see a light coming out of the top of the screen -_-)
3) Top speaker suddenly starts crackling and even breaks down.
All of these problems, that I have mentioned above, Might show of a bigger problem than just noticing one of these, like a bad build quality that makes a big tention to the top part of the phone or something similar.
I assume that it wont be far till someone will post that his Front camera or the Notification Lights stopped working.
Now, If I'm right I think we should make a centered thread that we will collect all of the problems in it and maybe even send it to the htc company. Since I've they just do their best to ignore all of these problems, which they obviously know of them already, maybe a thread full of problems and pictures, and plenty of people complaining could work?
I'd like to hear your opinions!
Have a good day

So you didn't find any thread about issues of the One? Not one thread? Really?

You obviously didn't read the whole thread, there's a reason why I've opened this thread.
