Unable to mount /system - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I had MK2 running Baja rom. I noticed that NC2 was available, so I went into stock rom slot, factory reset, flashed the rom, then rebooted into download mode, flashed the firmware in the PDA section...I then booted into the stock rom, installed the latest version of safestrap 3.72 and now I am unable to create any rom slots...I cannot mount it in safestrap either. I have tried fixing permissions in SS...
What gives?

oops double post.

ROM slots are currently unavailable in SafeStrap 3.72.

The rom-slots in safe strap 3.72 are currently unsupported due to that exact problem, a few people have however been able to get them to work by setting a specific size (it's posted in the safe strap thread) but be warned, it is unsupported and use at your own risk.

Do you have a link to those specific sizes?

[Q] Safestrap 3.71 Problem

Hello out there. I have a strange situation with my AT&T Galaxy S4 with Safestrap 3.71. I have rooted and installed Safestrap, downloaded a ROM, flashed it successfully, but for some reason when I switch to ROM slot 1 (this is where I flashed it) I get a black screen and my phone just reboots. What did I do wrong? I have been trying to use Safestrap for a while now, and every version of Safestrap and ROM that I tried flashing ended up like this. I always wipe everything before flashing to prevent a dirty flash. I tried with the MF3 firmware and the result it the same with the new MK2 firnware. Also, I am always able to switch back to the stock ROM slot and it boots without a problem. I would greatly appreciate some input. Thank you.
Had this same problem, my ROM slot size wasn't big enough to flash the rom as I didnt have enough space. It would flash but then end with unable to mount /system and i'd bootloop upon reboot. I freed up space and DELETED the ROM slot 1. Then remade it and adjusted the ROM slot memory size. No more unable to mount /system and booted up into SHOstock 3.0 rom on MK2. Had to go back and wipe after flashing the ROM to get rid of force closes. Didnt touch stock slot

What ROM are you trying to flash? For MK2 safestrap you can only flash a TW based rom running 4.3, any other roms that are not TW based and are not on 4.3 will now work.

Hello I am having the same problem. I was able to load up SHOstock v3 the safestrap version once. Then I tried Hyperdrive and that worked as well. Now I can not get SHOstock to load again. I just get a black screen that lasts seemingly forever. I have tried up'ing the cache, up'ing the data partition, I have tried different slots, I have tried uninstalling safestrap recover and the install apk and re-downling. I cannot get anything to load. Has anyone had this happen to them and figured out what to do?

[Q] Running 4.3 ROMs with Safestrap 3.72?

Hi all,
I just bought a new i337 and it came with the NB1 bootloader, NB1 stock, and I followed all the steps to downgrade, etc and have SafeStrap 4.72 running it with a rooted NB1 stock firmware. However, there are some things I like about 4.3, and I would like to run SHOSTOCK (JellyBean version), but I know that I flashed a NB1 Kernel through ODIN as part of running the rooted NB1 stock. Do I have to start over and downgrade it back to MK2? Or is it as simple as just installing the SHOSTOCK for Safestrap in SafeStrap 4.72 even though in the SHOSTOCK thread they don't mention anything about 4.72, just 4.71. I guess I'm just concerned about the kernels not matching with the locked bootloader and all.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Safestrap v3.72 will mount on both 4.4 and 4.3 kernels. No need to switch back to v3.71.

Thanks for the quick response and answer.
Just a quick clarification, I cannot use Safestrap 3.71 anyway due to my phone having the NB1 bootloader, right? I thought v 3.71 was only for those on MK2 or below.
Thanks again for all your awesome work on finding workarounds for rooting NB1 phones and above!

No the SS version has more to do with your kernel not the BL. You can theoretically flash a 4.3 ROM using SS 3.71 on your 4.4 BL. There are additional requirements like modules, etc that I won't get into.
Well, I was trying to installing SHOStock 3.0- safestrap version today, and I kept getting the "cannot mount /system" in SafeStrap while installing. After rebooting a couple of times, I think I stupidly decided to do an advanced wipe of /system (among others). Do I have to go all the way back to stock NB1 (Original NB1), and then start the whole process to MK2->Root -> Safestrap all over again?
Thanks for any help!

Thanks for all the quick replies. Just to recap, ODIN back to Stock NB1 (no need to uninstall the remnants of SafeStrap I have now?), Downgrade to MK2, Root, Safestrap.
Also, I'm not sure what I did wrong when I went from rooted Stock NB1 to try to flash SHOStock 3.0 (which was 4.3). I honestly wasn't paying attention to the messages, so maybe I had a unable to mount /system error then, but then I went to reboot it, just was blank. That's when I decided to be stupid and go to recovery to advanced wipe including /system. I guess now if I want to run SHOStock 3.0, or whatever ROM, I can just install it once I have Safestrap rather than installing the Rooted ROM and kernel, right?
Thanks again!

No need to odin back to stock NB1, the downgrade file will get you back to a semi-functioning(no-wifi) MK2 at which point you can root and install safestrap. From there go to the SHoStock thread for instructions on how to properly install that particular ROM.

Just to clarify, I guess I'm really confused about what kernel I would have if I flash the downgrade file? Would it overwrite the NB1 kernel I flashed after I flashed the rooted stock NB1 in Safestrap? I noticed that in going to rooted stock NB1 (or NC1), you have to ODIN flash the kernel.
Thanks again.

[Q] Not so noob (new to note 3) question

Okay,
Ive been rooting and romming for a few years (original Verizon droid, Verizon thunderbolt with Rom Manager (ClockworkMod), An AT&T Samsung SII (ClockworkMod) and was out a year with a stupid RAZR Maxx. Ive used Odin a few times to un-Softbrick my SII so I'm familiar with Odin.
Now I have this Note 3 and of course updated to NC4 before there was root, Just got root about a week ago with Towlroot, added SU, and safestrap 3.75. Ive tried adding Jasmin Rom and Beanstowns rom to my Note but soft bricked it twice and luckily could un-softbrick it with Odin again using the stock tars found here.
I Ive followed the instructions (I believe) for flashing a ROM on my Note but every time it tells me that the flash failed (and of course since Ive wiped everything I have no system left hence my reloading with Odin).
What am I doing wrong?
Ive enabled developer options and checked USB Debugging.
Im on build# KOT49H.N900VVRUVNC4 4.4.2
Thank all.
Using stock rom slot btw.

I'm fairly sure any NC4 roms need the NC2 kernel to run properly. Fortunately there is a way to have NC4 firmware with the NC2 kernel. Simply flash the kernel from here and you should be able to flash any kitkat rom for retail note 3.

That didn't work.
Did a flash in Odin to stock N900VVRUCNC4 again
Followed below
Coming From Stock NC4 OTA
Step- 1 - Root Device with TowelRoot
Step- 2 - Install Busybox from play store and install busybox itself
Step- 3 - Install Hashcodes Latest Safestrap (3.75)
Step- 4 - Boot into Safestrap Select Stock Slot
Step- 5 - Wipe Data Factory Reset The Stock Slot
Step- 6 - Flash nc4 deodex rom to the stock slot
Aaaaaaand
Flash failed, So I cant get past step six.
Any Ideas? Also had to re-flash in Odin again cause I wiped factory data, no problems.. lol, just annoying.
Seeing how I don't seem to be locked out of Odin, Isn't there modded TAR I could flash in Odin? or maybe downgrade to NC2?

When did you flash NC2 kernel? And no downgrade because of locked bootloader.

You after you flash the rom via Safestrap you need to reboot into download mode and flash the NC2 kernel via odin. Did Safestrap say flash failed? Or did you hit the immediate reboot system button?
If it was the latter you need to go back to the Safestrap main menu after flashing and reboot there, it gives you more options.
If it is the former, and there is a problem flashing the rom it may be a bad download. Did you check the md5?
Its the latter of the 2 (therfore I never made it to Odin to flas the NC2 firware), I did not check the md5. I've tried different roms and get a failed flash in safestrap with all of them. I will try again after re-downloading and checking the md and let you know. I'm also going to Uninstall safestrap and reinstall it, maybe roll back from the 3.75 version.
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
If the md5 checks out and it still doesn't flash, you can try reflashing the stock tar via odin > doing a factory reset to clean the system > rerooting > and trying again.
Also try this before wiping system in Safestrap prior to flashing the rom. It is a way to super clean the internal sd.

I tried to install CWM on my AT&T Galaxy S4... Can you help me fix this?

Hello everyone. I was trying to get Cyanogenmod 11 on my Galaxy S4. I read a guide and followed it to a T, but I guess it must have been a bad guide, and I can't find it now.
At any rate, I have 4.2.2 with NC1, and I used Geohot's TR to get root. I installed SU, and that's working. Then (because I used to use this on my GS3) I installed Rom Toolbox pro, chose to install CWM, and I kept getting errors. So I decided to use another, ROM installer, and flash TWRP.
So now, when I reboot my phone, I just get errors that say "Odin error".
What do I need to do in order to get a custom ROM? I've read in these forums that safestrap is the only way, but I don't want to do this until I know that I can move from what I'm currently at, to safestrap. I don't want to dig my hole any deeper.
Thank you so much.

You can only use Safestrap. Boot into download mode and then exit from it (I forget which button you hold) to get back in to the system. Then install Safestrap after using SELinux Mode Changer. You'll probably also want to find the recovery image for NC1 and flash that. Check the NB1-NC1 keeproot ROM thread you can find in the index for that
If you need anything else, ask here, but next time you have a new question, start it in the q&a section please.

I have seen that everywhere. Out of desperation, is there ANY way I can get CyanogenMod on here?
Secondly, my phone is having issues and I want to restore it to factory settings. When I choose this, it reboots and I get the ODIN error. I then have to power down, then I have to hold down while restarting, then hit cancel, then it boots normally. How do I remedy this?

Give up or get another phone-- NO CM at this time--there is a GE rom in General, I believe, for SafeStrap.
Not sure on other issue, maybe Odin back to stock--someone else may have suddestion--Read up on things in General and Q&A on SafeStrap. And a couple other threads like All Things MK2 etc--:good:

Has to be TouchWiz rom. To me it is not worth the effort. I just stay stock for now.
I was hoping to get some help.
I installed SafeStrap, used SELinux, and then installed GoldenEye Rom on slot 1 after taking a backup of my current rom to my external SD card. I then installed update-supersu and att_nc1_modules through safestrap.
I reboot into system and it just boots into the exact same rom as my stock rom... but the only difference is that my networks don't work. So I've booted back into safestrap and changed my boot device back to stock and all is well.
What step am I missing?
Edit: Yes, I've made sure that Rom Slot 1 is active before booting into it.

So my backup that I made with Satestrap won't work? I'm in the process of restoring that right now.
Do you have time to explain what all of this means?
flash the nb1 tar in Odin?
OTA to NC1?
Does this mean use Odin to get back to Nb1, then use the built in samsung updater to get to nc1, then start again with TR and SS?
I am a noob, so be detailed
Edit: I assume you mean this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49562527
another thing: restoring my phone within safestrap worked. I'm back on my stock rom. At least my phone's working again.

Does this mean use Odin to get back to Nb1, then use the built in samsung updater to get to nc1, then start again with TR and SS?
I am a noob, so be detailed

Use this file in Odin, it's the nb1 tar file. After you download it you'll need to extract it using winrar or 7-zip. You'll get a .tar.md5 file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149
Use that in Odin pda/pa slot depending on what version of Odin you're using.
The either just ota, over the air, update to nc1 or there is a nb1 to nc1 zip file that can be side loaded in the stock recovery.
Once on nc1 you can use tr to root.

Thank you for the detail. I was able to restore my backup - do I still need to do all of this prior to trying again in safestrap?
I suppose it would increase my chances at success.

If you restored your backup I would try to flash your rom in the stock slot of safestrap first. Only do the Odin if you can't restore first.

So my first attempt, the one that left me in the boot loop, was from the stock slot. Try again?

[Q] Verizon Note 3 Rom Help

Hi Guys I'm trying to install a custom Rom on my phone but have failed 4 times now and have to reach out to the forum for help. I'm on 4.4.2 ota and have rooted w/ towel root sucessfully, installed safestrap 3.72 and 3.75, busybox and super su. I advance wipe and do a clean install. Everytime it says it was successful but when I reboot the screen goes black and does noting. The phone remains on but nobodys home. I've tried the Jasmine rom and the alliance rom with the same results. I used odin to go back to stock but I want a custom rom. Can anybody help? I've attached a screenshot of my about phone. Also can anybody recommend a Rom that helps with the signal/gps issues that started after KK?
Thanks in Advance!

You need to flash the NC2 kernel via odin. File and instructions can be found here. When following the steps in the OP you can substitute the rom you want for the one you can download from the post.
Also incase you didn't see it in the Safestrap OP you will only be able to use the stock rom slot, if trying to flash on a created slot it won't boot properly or at all (rom slots are only supported on NC2 firmware and previous, the ota is NC4).
Hope this helps.
That's great thank you very much for your help!
Do I just flash the kernal over my stock rom?

To be safe you might want to flash the rooted stock rom provided in the post I linked earlier. That rom is the NC4 stock with pre-root and a couple other tweaks Basically the same as OTA but better. Just follow the steps in the OP and you'll be good to go (if you haven't already).
thank you
My pleasure.
Ok I'm sorry I'm still confused. The OP doesn't say to flash with Odin anywhere it says flash with Safe strap. Do I flash the firmware with Odin first then Rom?

Anything firmware, kernel or modem related must be flashed in Odin as long as we have a locked bootloader. Just follow the steps as instructed and you'll be fine.
