Android 4.4.2 Other Improvements - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there.
I'm thinking of buying a G2 again as I heard the Android 4.4.2 is now live here in the UK/EU. But I want to ask about the other improvements to the device.
Most particularly the camera.
1. Is there any minor or subtle changes to the quality, behaviour, speed to the stock G2 camera?
2. If I install a third party camera app like Google Camera will the algorithm and "interpretation" in terms of picture quality be improved or changed?
Please advice. Thanks.

1. No. But you can install xdadebb's camera mod which makes the stock camera much better
2. Google Camera doesn't share anything with LG software, they are independent. You can have both at same time, but you need KK.

Sorry I don't do root as I prefer the original and stock uodates. I feel I might damage the phone even more.
Does it mean I need to have android 4.4.2 in order to install Google Camera?

Yes, the camera from play store needs KitKat. Also many people on this forum can help you with rooting, you don't even need to modify stock software. I am running the stock KitKat just with root.

It improved the launch of camera and focus slightly but not a huge difference
I did some test with the google camera taking exact pictures and comparing I found the stock was slightly sharper, so google's camera app is using a different post processing.

Camera quality with custom ROM

Does having a custom non-Touchwiz ROM change the camera performance? Like Cyanogen mod or AOKP, I'm not entirely sure what a ROM changes. Would the quality of the other modes change (HDR, HDR video, etc)?
We'll never have sammy camera on aosp/cm. You need tw framework for it to run. Thats the only downside of aosp/cm. But honestly im on rooted stock and im loving everything about this phone. Ive ran aosp/cm on all my phones and hated touchwiz. The s4 has definately made me content for now.
ATT S4 Rooted. Beastin.
4.2.2
I understand that the Samsung camera application cannot be ported over, but is the performance of the camera still the same? Basically do pictures taken still look like the same quality? My other major question is what modes are available? Other than just normal is there HDR, night, etc.

I flashed CM 10.1 about 1 hour ago, shortly before deleting my only System files on it (DOH!). Anyway, I noticed the camera wasn't good at all in CM 10.1. I dont know if its just the way it looks, I didnt take a single picture, but I didnt like it and its one of the reasons im going back to stock.
Do you know if the camera quality will get better?
Just install a different camera app from the Play Store. I use Fotor and it takes excellent pics.

[Q] Android Stock Camera App way better photos than Stock LG's

Can somebody explain to me why?I cant understand.I switch from stock firmware to AOKP and my photo captures is so different and the zoom quality is not blury as lg's stock camera app +the flash is way quicker!
You cant understand why one app is better than another ? The AOSP (AOKP) camera app is just faster and LG's camera app is slow...
This mod makes the LG camera app live up to its specs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2548974

Well the camera image processing software is also pretty good from LG and they also paid for the licences and Aosp is free so they don't have an amazing camera quality like from big company's who invest lots of money in those software.
Here are some tips I can suggest you,

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471900 (OP Only to read and maybe find the links.)
http://d-h.st/xR7 ( Jishnu sur 3.5 Camera for CM)
More I can't really suggest. The only remaining thing you could do then is search on the wide web for an camera app which is good but it will probably go hard since most camera apps also on playstore aren't with advanced image processing as on the LG stock camera. If you are on Cyanogenmod I suggest to also take a look at the 3.5 camera from Jishnu sur maybe. And also the others
Goodluck:good:
P.S. I don't know or they all work good also with image processing etc since I still have to decide which phone I will get myself .

Why custom ROM camera cannot defeat stock ROM camera quality?

Why custom ROM camera cannot defeat stock ROM camera quality?
Because it can and does? Stock rom has awful side effects like aggressive sharpening and noise reduction. I hated it and had to mod my system files to get decent photos. Unless the custom Rom you are using has bad camera library files or something, I don't see why it wouldn't be a major improvement over stock.
I know some custom roms, like the pixel experience one, are supposed to have camera2 and HDR+ out of the box. Maybe it depends on the rom?

I have used pixel experience too, but i see almost all custom ROMs fails miserably at low light compare to stock ROM, may be some custom ROMs are using bad libraries..agreed!

Well , the motorola magic tricks aren't good at all .
Just look at the agressive noise reduction and oversharpening.
I think side loading the google camera app on the custom roms might help.

They aren't on XDA... yet. I wanted to add them to my camera mod guide here but haven't gotten around to it yet. Savitar is defcomg here on XDA. He's a pretty awesome source of information on this topic.

Can you post these mods here and also if you can ask savitar to mod camera lib callibration as pixel2, cause both got the same sensor and having pixel2 callibration will surely improve camera quality.

Actually, Savitar said the Pixel 2 calibration was worse than the one he's been using, aside from adc noise profiling and color calibration. The rest was unusable/ didn't enhance.
There's a thread where I've tried to gather relevant links and information about the camera here:

No need for custom Rom. Use Bacon camera from the play store.

Custom ROM Advice - Camera?

Hi all,
I'm going to install a custom ROM but wanted to ask a few questions first.
What's the deal with the camera? Camera quality is important to me and I've heard that custom ROMs can degrade the camera performance. What exactly happens? I don't think much of the stock camera app and so use Snap Camera instead as it has the ability to turn off noise-reduction and has way more features.
Will there be any difference using Snap on a custom ROM. Does HDR still work well?
More generally, what ROMs are good in terms of being bug free, smooth and recent Android version (7+).
Thanks
Oh, and if anyone could point me in the direction of a good guide for initial rooting and custom recovery for the 900F that would be super! :good:

Man, for me, the performance of Snap camera is better than stock, I was fear of the same, camera quality, but for me HDR and noise-reduction is much better than samsung's camera. Now I can't barely use stock roms without Snap, or Mi A2 Magisk module. It just don't have so many functions like stock one, but I don't mind for it.

Here, just make sure you're downloading files for your phone model, you can see it in "About the phone" on settings of your phone, thanks for who made that guide of the link
For the camera just use snap camera (default LineageOS app) and this mod https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...-15-1-camera-supporting-60fps-120fps-t3809145
Also, for rooting G900F you just need to flash TWRP using odin and then the desired root solution, (i would recomend latest magisk)
Thanks both.
I've been using my phone on CrDroid first, then Mokee for about a week now and I think the camera is just fine.
I have done some comparison shots and there seems to be no difference between Snap Cam on stock and Snap Cam on custom rom.
The few differences I have found are in the denoising process. If you like denoising (and I don't), then the stock TouchWiz camera does a much better job of resolving detail and contrast than Snap Cam or the in built camera app of CrDroid or Mokee does. Denoising is pretty bad. However, I have recently installed Google Camera on Mokee and that seems to do a pretty good job with denoising. Alternatively you could just use an app like Snapseed to denoise photos you think need it, and get much better results.
