Best clean Odin version - newbie question - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi this is my first post here so please be gentle. i did search for this answer but truthfully i'm only new to Android as I've been a Iphone user for years and years. I don't even know the correct 'Android' terminology to search for information but i'm picking it up quickly i think.
Recently I purchased my first Samsung Galaxy S4 and it died an hour later so once i had that replaced I spoke to my telecommunications provider (Telstra Australia) and the guy on the phone was really helpful and he told me to nuke my new phone and get a version of Odin (the open UK version I think) and i wrote down everything he said but unfortunately either my daughter or my girlfriend found a better use for that piece of paper and now I don't know which version he referred to.
Essentially he explained that Telstra has layered it's own software over the top of the Samsung and Android software and that it made it a slower device and also received slower updates (months later) so i thought what he said made good sense.
Can anybody please tell me which version this guy would have been referring to, or at least a good version to run with instead of what I have already?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hey mate, the version of Odin shouldn't matter TOO much. Just get the latest 3.09.
It's only about 9 megs I think.
However, to use it (and avoid voiding your warranty) you will also need an official Samsung rom. Best place to go for that is http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ though their downloads are often slow.
Make sure you get a Samsung version, and not a play version or black version. The Russian version: XXUFNC9 should be fine for your needs.
Flash it as AP and make sure repartition is NOT checked.
You may also need to first install Kies from Samsung (and ensure it's not running in the background when launching Odin) to get the drivers (so that Odin recognises your device).
Post back here if you're stuck at any stage.
I imagine this thread also should be in the Q&A forum. Maybe a mod should move it?
EDIT: Just saw the post above me: Good advice, I assumed you were on a Telstra I9505T or I9505 (as that's the Telstra S4 4G that I have - but best to check your model first).

Great advice from the guy on the phone....
Don't even think about flashing software on your phone if you don't know the basics yet.
Read the forums, learn the basics, read what to do when the flashing fails.
Odin is the program to flash the official roms on your phone. Learn what Knox is, what custom roms are and what custom recovery is.
This forum is flooded by people that screw there phone up because they don't take the time to read the basics. They just follow a guide and then it's help it does not work.

News on Bell HTC Vogue WM6.1/GPS/Rev-A Rom Update?

Does anyone know when there will be an update for Bell users? It seems they are lagging behind telus and sprint on the upgrades.....
Bell HTC Vogue WM6.1/GPS/Rev-A Rom
Same concern here, why Bell always need to be 1 year behind his competitors?
The official rom is 1.19.666.1 while others have 3.56.xxx
Yeah, Bell is always late . But for the price I pay for unlimited data. I don't really mind that much.
What HTC Technical Support Says:
I asked the HTC support team about the issue and that what they <strike>answer</strike>, copy pasted me (note the when and if):
"Hello,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the latest firmware for your Touch.
We understand that it is important you receive all the information to best utilize your device. Currently, our developers have to work with Bell to determine when and if a ROM upgrade will be available. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for availability of any ROM update. Please check the HTC America website for any software updates that may be released, http://www.htc.com/us . Just click on the support link then choose your device.
I hope we have answered your question in detail. Feel free to contact us again if you have any further questions.
HTC Technical Support"
As I know Bell policy, I doubt we will ever see such upgrade.
This really sucks...i was looking forward to use the gps system and i don't want to void my warranty by using a different rom....it seems i will have to buy a separate gps receiver after all...

I dont see why everyone is concerned with an official update. Just unlcok and flash a custom rom, which will be 100x better anyways
I read on forums that once the radio is changed from 1 point something to 3 point something, it won't change back properly....since i have a 3 year warranty on the phone i dunno if they will fix something broken if they see it has a diff rom or if something from the cooked rom stays with the phone when i load the oem....
Any input?

Samsung i637 CLEAN rom.

I was looking over the internet yesterday and I found CLEAN english rom wm6.5 for Jack...At least that's what one chinese guy told me on a forum (chinese):
So maybe thing will move forward a lil' bit for us, Jack users.
Download:
IN TXT (since I'm a newbie-url lock)
I bet lots of you is still waiting for this.
I have it running...It's nice...although it has few glitches....lil chinese here and there...but beside that it really handy and CLEAN
I'm not an expert on this sort of thing, nor do I pretend to be one (although not from a lack of understanding, simply a lack of knowledge.) I gave it a shot. It seemed like it lags a little bit more than the standard Samsung/AT&T ROM. There were several things I liked about it including the new interfaces and much improved task manager and file explorer. There's a little bit too much Chinese in it for me (I tried to do a few tweeks but many of the registry/system files are in Chinese)
Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge/experience can help to make this a more user friendly ROM.
Yeah. I figured to compare this chinese rom with the original (treat chinese as a base model) and figure out which stuff to throw away from original...
And maybe do the other way around and figure out which stuff can be added to original.
But taht's just be...newbie talk.
cheers
Here is my 2 cents...
Maybe I shouldn't have bought these phones... I got 2 for a penny each. I ugraded to a Tilt 2 instantly.... My wife is still on the Jack.
It is God awful of a ROM loadaout for what it is... it's got alot under the hood for it's form factor and can perform nicely with the right tweaks and interface.
Sadly, The interest in this project is not at all dissimilar to Samsungs interest in Winmo as a whole. This is undoubtedly why we do not see the released ROMs from Sammy like we do with HTC.
HTC seems to know that if the public can enhance the device... They will buy the device. Samsungs lock and subsequent turnabout away from Microsoft will leave many users of this device in the dust and looking to ditch it quick. I did.
@ mykail or anyone who can help...:
Were you able to find a clean ROM for this phone?
I would love to upgrade to WM 6.5, but my device is unlocked, so the ATT option is not the best option for me (though it exists).
I have spent several days looking for it, but you've been longer than me, i just got the phone a week ago.
I appreciate any help in this issue.
I changed phones. I'm running HTC now on Android.
About the Jack. Haven't been searching for clean rom since November. Just few seconds ago popped in to our chinese friends and they are still developing. From what I saw it appears they are running Jack @ Win7.

Help with ROM issues
Hi Guys,
At first i must say sorry for re-open this post. there is a lot of months since the last response.
I bought a samsung sgh-i637 in LatinAmerica, playing on the internet i used the AT&T ROM for upgrading to Windows Mobile 6.5 but as you know that rom has a lot of programas of AT&T and also they change the major of keys (keypad) functionability... and at the end the phone still stay locked for AT&T.
I want to know if is possible get a ROM without the AT&T programs and also that it unlock my phone for use with any phone operator.
Thanks a lot!

HTC Corportation Complain shared

Hello everyone. I'm here about the share something wich i do hope you all do something similer as i did. I'm very unhappy with HTC, and i really do hope to get HTC more respectfull for all its customers, and participants on turning this phone into a great smartphone.
Here have been the messages wich i've exchanged with HTC corporation and their replys on why doesnt HTC get an update on European firmware, and only on Rogers HTC.
ME: Hello. I just want to say i'm very disapointed with HTC. Rogers made up an update for HTC magic 2.1 android, and HTC isnt giving us one. Just wish to point out with me is a client wich you'll loose. I'm very sad with HTC, when you guys already replied to me that HTC magic wont have 2.1 android.
Best regards,
Jorge Pereira
HTC: Dear Mr. Pereira,
Thank you for contacting us,
We apologize for the inconvenience, however there is no information regarding the release of the 2.1 upgrade for the Rogers Magic on the HTC website.
Please note that any information that any information that do not come from the HTC website can only be regarded as rumors and speculation.
Please note that you can contact us via support line. For further details, please go to http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx, you'll find a toll free number that you can dial only from a landline.
Best Regards,
HTC Team
http://www.htc.com
ME: I'll be simple on the reply. Is from your official site:
HTC MAGIC (ROGERS) ÉCLAIR ROM UPDATE 3.54.631.3 | 09.08.2010
at: http://www.htc.com/ca/support/magic-rogers/downloads/
Already download it and tried to update. But was not possible giving id errror. So dont sent sand to my eyes, as i do not believe in you.
Everyone wich has a rooted phone, already flashed it. I want an official update as many HTC magic owners want.
Since there has been a very large lack of knowing where to find the official update, so that you might not say again its a rumour. http://www.htc.com/ca/support/h/magic-update The oficial update site from HTC. Very disapointed with HTC. Lying to its costumers. Never thought this would be a position HTC would have.
HTCear Mr. Pereira, Thank you for contacting us, We apologize for the earlier confusion, however, currently there is no plan to upgrade your phone to Android 2.1. The result of our analysis showed that an upgrade to your phone may impact the user experience and we ultimately decided that an upgrade was not recommended. Your phone will still receive support, and we thank you for your patience and understanding. Please note that you can contact us via support line . For further details, please go to http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx, you'll find a toll free number that you can dial only from a landline. Best Regards, HTC Team http://www.htc.com
ME: Why is it not recomended since rogers have exacly same HTC magic with same board same specs? And if i tell you that i already seen a rooted phone with 2.1 android oficial with Rogers version of android 2.1 workign much better than my 1.5 android? If i tell you that i can get in that android the maximum speed of my internet conection, and iwht my phone i'm limited to a 1,5 Mbps? If i tell you that i decided to root my phone and tested and i get same great results as the other phone? The conclusion would be again, HTC is sending sand to its customers, and you'll be loosing one right here since you are not beeing honest. Experience with Android Rogers ROM is the REAL best experience i could ever have. I never had my internet lag again, i went to 6 Mbps speed at download (thats 4 times what i had before) . How is it even possible to not be recomended? HTC this info is beeing shared by everyone with HTC magics. I'm sure you are all receiving same emails as i am. I'm just speaking in a forum about this. XDA Forum, please do check at HTC Magic section it because i'm really sad you are working in a such unhonored manner. Thank you again for the replys. Best regards, Jorge Pereira

I hope by this i can get a petition where everyone complains and HTC really releases an european edition. Would be great to get a European Radio edition and other things. Anyways Thank you everyone wich tries with me
you should really try to get something proofread or just use you native language when filing formal complaints.
on the other hand, yes it does suck that you havent gotten an update, but they never said it would be updated. you should look into a custom rom.
but the thing is. ROgers has an official update great for android. Wich has HTC hand. What more proof do we need?

He's referring to grammar, spelling and punctuation. Companies are less likely to take you seriously when you have sentences such as:
"Just wish to point out with me is a client wich you'll loose."
What?
"Everyone wich has a rooted phone..."
I'm thinking maybe the word that would be more appropriate.
"Is from your official site:"
How about "This is from your official site"
Look, when you are writing something important you want it to sound important otherwise they are less likely to understand it as such. This is unless your about ten years and writing to Fisher-Price.

[Q] 16gb specific ROMs install on 32gb or 64gb S4?

Maybe it's a stupid question to many, but... I have the chance to order a 32gb korean version of the S4 off Taobao.com, and since I live in China it's quite convenient. The only issue I have is that I refuse to use an android phone without rooting it, and I've been a happy Wanam user for a long time on my S3.
The taobao seller states that 16gb ROMs CANNOT be used for 32gb models AT ALL, but I know better than blindly trusting ignorant Chinese vendors who usually don't know what they are talking about (personal experience).
It does not matter whether it's 9500, 9505 or whatever, this seller has all the models (even 9508 dual sim), I just want to understand if SIZE is a problem or not... Will I be able to just simply root it, and keep using the stock ROM at least? Or maybe I'll even be able to install ANY 16gb ROM of my choice? Or none of the above???
Thanks!
P.S. I searched the S4 forums but found no reference at all to this question...

As long as you're flashing a i9505 ROM to an i9505-like(aka U.S. Carriers variants) device, and an i9500 ROM to an i9500-like device, you'll be just fine. Don't try to flash unlike devices(i.e. i9505 to i9500) though. Best case scenario, the flash will fail. Worst case, you'll brick the device.
Internal storage capacity has never, to my knowledge, had anything to do with what you could or could not flash.

That would be my same guess, although the seller was adamant to the fact that it won't absolutely work (he even declared that he tried himself...). Though I agree with you, I'll wait for some concrete proof, when 32 and 64 gb versions will be more widely available, or at least until someone comes out with a first-person experience of this.
Anyway, thanks

I don't want to call the guy out... but that seller has some very funny ideas; likely he was trying to flash unlike devices. If you want further feedback, I'd suggest posting this question over in the AT&T forums since the 32gb is more widely released. Further, from my past experiences, I've successfully flashed ROMs intended for the Developer Edition(64gb) of the HTC One onto my 32gb.
Let's say, hypothetically, he's correct--the developers who create the ROMs would be required to, perhaps not by forum rules but more so out of "I'm not responsible if you do this," declare their ROMs only usable by certain phones with certain storage capacities?
I will applaud you for taking your time, reading, and doing research before jumping into the fray. Is this your first phone you've rooted?

Not at all, I rooted my first HTC Legend years ago, then my current S3,and so on. Happy user of Wanamlite ROM on my current S3 at the moment. Anyway, I guess our idea is correct. Not to belittle the vendor's experience, but in MY experience PRC people can be quite often very ignorant, or appear so at the very least, and declare the impossibility of an action or a request just to avoid any sort of responsibility in case the crap hits the fan... Think it as a sort of "ultimate disclaimer": I told you not to do it, so if you try and break it it's your problem.
After saying all this, I guess I'm in no rush since my S3 is still working like a charm after more than one year, I'm just exploring the S4 alley since I bough a SUPERCOOL Nolan bluetooth helmet for my bike, I use 2 sim cards at the same time (1 personal=S3, 1 work=HTClegend) and the HTC Legend's bluetooth is sort of fried So I was looking for a way to upgrade things.
I'll follow your suggestion and try to post in the AT&T section as well.
Thanks!

S8 update messed up my sensors

Brought S8 from Middle East .. relocated to India, started using it. Was installing and following Samsung Updates quietly up until two days back.
On Jul 1st after the last update, all sensors stopped working bare the Finger Print and the Camera.
Failed sensors I found out so far ... Proximity, Ambient Light, Magnetic, Accelerometer, Barometer, Compass, IRIS
Phone turned into a basic phone having Finger Print sensor.
All this for no fault of mine.
As you guessed, No warranty in India ... Only option given was to "Change the Motherboard" costing nearly half the price of the phone.
Not going to do this, as I have no trust whether this would fail in the next update.
Has anyone got solution / suggestions ?
What I tried
- Factory Reset / Cache wiping
- Taking to the service center and it seems they have flashed the "Correttt version"
- My CSC shows INS/INS/XSG
MORAL :- A Samsung update messes up their Flagship model so much.
do you update it using odin? or OTA?
have u roll back to stock?

Updated using the OTA ... Did not roll it to stock as I was not so sure what to do.
Took it to service center and they say Motherboard (If there is such a thing) has been spoilt
did flash my phone with different pda and csc number which not belong to my country.
everything works fine here. just see couple apps that belong to mexican carrier.
i think the ota update that u did is still 'buggy' . roll back to stock, im sure it will fix all your problem.

Thank you and I really wish it does.
Question
1. How to find the pda and CSC thats suitable for my phone ?
2. I have Smart Switch , how do I roll back ?
3. I see people referring to some third party Sammobile etc. If I do that , will it void my warranty in any way ?
4. Once I flash to a different country, will I still get updates or after that I am on my own ?
Attached is my Phone Summary , I am not sure if I understood CSC PDA that well.. Presume its INS
Also attached is the Software Version

let me answer to help :
1. based on your attachment, the pda should be start with your 4 last digit of build number, so it is CRF7. u can use and flash all the rom published for SM-G950F with pda number ended with the same 4 digit like yours (in this case CRF7). it wont break your phone, since the rom is the published for the same type of phone (SM-G950F).
CRF7 is global firmware. the csc number will follow the pda number. just find one which suited best for your daily and dont forget to read the changelog and review from user from xda.
2. u need to root first
3. sammobile is just a website that release official firmware for samsung. i download 8.0 update from that site too. its safe. warranty? the rom is in stock condition, so it wont void your warranty.
4. if samsung says they will give update to their device. they will give the update. no matter which country you choose, update will be given. its just about timing, when will u get the update to your device.
hope my answers will help u brother

if that not helping you, bring your phone back to samsung service center, tell them what u did is just updating the system by ota, which released by samsung itself. tell them your phone still on warranty, dont give a **** to their up-coming answers because it will not help you to solve your problem.
shout at them, you want your phone to get fixed on the same day, tell them you are not the only one facing that problem. dont forget to make video recording when you visit samsung service center. if they still dont want to do anyhing, and tell you to pay for board replacement, ask him/her to show their manager, now u can f*ck*ng throw your phone in the manager's face.
samsung release the update , the update broke the system, user need to pay for getting fixed. what the **** samsung
.. contd ... FINAL UPDATE ..
Samsung wont repair my phone for the damage they caused.
Getting reports that many have got their devices repaired free of cost after repeatedly pestering the customer care. Another Technician revealed that this is a ploy to deter people from buying phones from outside ... PLUS .... enroll existing customers for their Extended warranty program.
Meanwhile :- I am sending this piece of **** ..... back to the Middle East for repairs.
Conclusion :- Samsung messed up their "flagship" phone with their own updates. This happened to me, can happen to anyone (even after warranty) So stay safe and be careful.
Now I stand corrected why ppl invest mere 25K+ on Chinese brands that almost give flagship like features

You r right. A service center guy revealed that talk tough to the samsung customer care, pester them with phone calls and they might take responsibility.

Now I stand corrected why ppl invest mere 25K+ on Chinese brands that almost give flagship like features

yesterday i broke my a3. removing some of stock apps, and the phone suddenly going crazy, cant use camera, many apps are broken, like instagram, line messenger, many fc's here and there, and reflashing the stock nougat rom using odin, and then my imei is GONE w*f, i dont remember what i did, i do many flashing , cp only , bl only, csc only, combining ap & cp & csc from oreo and nougat, and the imei is back LOL
and yeah, do you have to pay for getting repair of your phone?
Yes I have to pay for repairs ... for a 6 month old device that Samsung Messed up. (around 40% of the price of the phone)
It seems Samsung does a lot of research on their phones and an update doesn't mess up anything.
When I pointed them to the hundreds of issues they round it off with "Sire u do not have warranty"
Some stuffs I tried without success
Recap :- The issues started after I downloaded the firmware
G950FXXU2CRF7_G950FOXM2CRF7 on Jul 1
Update :- After reading lots of stuffs, I downloaded the same firmware (but of XSG version) from Sammobile .. (download is a slow process)
Flashed it with ODIN .. - Knox doesn't trip and doesn't brick if you pay good attention to the instructions.
Result :- The sensors are still dead
So tried with the Firmware before the update of July 1st
i.e. G950FXXU2CRED_G950FOXM2CREB_XSG Sensors are still dead.
Did not go beyond that firmware as it has U1 instead of U2 .. not sure what that is but read somewhere you shouldn't go back to U1 once you are flashed with U2
NOTE :- Contrary to some videos for Odin with s8, the latest firmware flash wont work with odin 3.12.x. You will have to use 3.13.x (It has to do with the Firmware file compression)
Did a factory reset before and after the flash.
The only thing I did not try is removing the SIM before Factory reset.
Summary,
If SHAMsung customer care "advice's" you to downgrade and try .... They are wasting your time .... trying to void your warranty and these wont work anyways
Either they have some software patch that they can rectify this problem
OR else
..... give in and get your Motherboard changed (If you are like me without warranty in your country .. u r SOLJWF)
Conclusion :- I am going to send this trash back to the Middle East via my relative and keeping my fingers crossed.
The cost emailed by SCAMSung India is 20K+ INR with NO WARRANTIES for motherboard. Looking at their service centers there is a worry if they are capable to retain IP65 after opening it PLUS not sure if this would repeat.
So instead of all this, I could shell another 5 to 8K get phones like Vivo / Opo etc with equal or better features All within warranty.
To all those facing such issues, never spend additional money on these brands.
For those proud owner of S8 GALAXY, better start counting ur STARS
Unfortunate owner of S8
You do know, that THAT is excatly what Samsung excludes in their warranty conditions, right?
"Failure of the product arising from incorrect installation [...]
Unauthorized modifications carried out to the product in order to comply with local or international technical standards in countries for which this SAMSUNG product was not originally designed." (Official Samsung's warranty terms and conditions)
And yes, you did so.
Doesn't care if your S8 is an international version or not. Your phone was not meant to be used outside of the middle East. So your firmware/csc/whatever change made you lose your warranty in the first place. Second, you did flash some firmwares by yourself. No one can be sure, that you flashed it correctly (which I assume though). So next time, if Samsung asks you to reset or downgrade it, let them do it at a service point. Period. Then you can definitely say, you did nothing wrong. But, you altered the phone to work in India, which recaps to unauthorized modifications.
I understand, that it is a very unpleasing situation for you, don't get me wrong.
Even if everything worked fine before the 1st July update, you could have a bug in your phone, which just didn't come out to that time.
Some numbers for you: Samsung sold about 8 million copies of the S8 (plus). So even if "thousands of users report this problem", it's just about 0.01% of the actual users. It's sad for a company that big to wave off the customers like that. But believe me, with such a small number they just don't care enough. The high the number of faulty units seem, it's just too few to really think that it could be a malfunctioning update. Because, why do have thousands not working sensors when millions do not have problems? That's where the whole "altered system, you did something wrong etc." starts.
But what I would do, if Samsung denies me that (questionable) service: I would try to make charges and complains against the seller? I think that in your buying contract, there could be something like "promised working etc."
I work in a place, that has such problems every day. Customers who feel let alone from their company.
It's sad, but it's true. If the costs are to high to swap the faulty devices because the amount is so small, it just won't be done.
See Apple with their downsizing battery. They admitted the mistake (like Samsung could do sometime in the future with the motherboard), but they didn't offer a free repair, just cheaper.
In all your anger and disappointment, I hope I could let you see the other site of the problem.
Sent from my Galaxy S8 using XDA Labs

My Response:-
Initially it was an OTA update. Maybe you did not read the thread. No where does Samsung say NEVER INSTALL OTA in a different country. Does it?

Yes they too tried it, and did a Shabby job too.
In the end Installed the XSG version myself and got it verified by Samsung Customer Care center here as well as from online tech support via their Remote assistance.

No you didn't reveal anything I was unaware. Rather you failed reading the entire thread.
Read post #9 of this thread
The only reason why I didn't persist was, I have the option to send this trash back to the Middle East and claim warranty ... which I am going to do.
So
Whether Defects are 1% or .001%, Failures are Failures, I and many like me are affected while trusting a Global brand ... to help its customers.
FACT IS I invested in a Flagship phone, Trusted the Samsung Service personal stating "You will get all Assistance / Warranty anywhere"
Didn't read "Terms and Conditions" to verify that claim.
Another SHAMEsung device dies
My sister had brought S7 Edge along with my S8
Just few hours back, she called me to say her screen has turned Green..
I read a lot of reports online about this infamous "Green screen of Death" problems of Samsung phones. So much for investing in Flagship devices ..
Got my s8 Back
Update !!
I got my S8 back from the middle east and its working "AS OF NOW"
The report says , changed PCB 2 etc etc
Price paid ? 0$
Won the Trust back? Not yet !! I am not sure if I would do another Samsung Update.
Advice (For those who have s8 Note 8 etc )
- If you ARE under Warranty, go for all the Updates and you will have chance to get the problems fixed.
- If you ARE NOT under Warranty, Take your device to the nearest ShameSung service center and ask them to do the update for you.
Advice (For those who are planning to get s8 Note 8 and S7 edge)
- Please Dont !!
Except for the Camera, there is nothing Extra Ordinary.
Curved display is a gimmick, you will end up accidentally touching the sides while wondering why your menu ain't responding.
Tempered Glass always cracks from the sides.
IRIS Scanner doesn't work for some irises, Doesn't work for me at least
So !! there are better options to look into the market. Look what suits you and you will be happy to pay 1/3rd of the price, yet enjoy all the warranty and support.
Good Luck !!
So, If you are still under warranty
Is there any chance that a new update will fix this issue?
Sorry to be the one telling you this - You seem extremely butthurt and unaware of your own wrong doings.
Just because you had these self inflicted issues, you don't recommend the S8 to others? Boy please. It's people like you i advice to cross over to apple and iOS.

Either you haven't read the complete thread ... or ... You did not understand what you just typed
Doing a Samsung Update is what everyone does and what Samsung and Android recommends.
Look around, there are hundreds of S8's and Note 8's affected with the update, and Samsung is rectifying them.
All on their flagship device ?
I have posted both for owners and Prospective buyers..
Lastly my Recommendations / suggestions are based on my experience.
