Hard bricked. Feel terrible - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey everyone, so today I was installing a rom on my friend's s3, and it turns out Verizon phones had a locked bootloader, so we managed to brick it. I've been trying to fix it for hours.
I finally found a way to fix it by using an external SD, so I was trying to format my external sd from my s4, in order to use for the bricked s3. I used an app called aparted.
Apparantly, aparted seemed to have deleted my phones partitions, not just the external sd card. Because now I cannot turn on my phone. It is completely unresposive. No odin, no cmw, no lights. I have managed to brick 2 phones in one day. I don't know what to do. Is this fixable with a jtag service? Are there any places that are trustworthy?
Thanks, and please give me some advice...

Best buy MAY be able to fix it... Although I think u probably will need JTAG ?

Hmm
I think I'm just gonna go for the JTAG. I went to a repair store where I live and he said the motherboard was broken.. I think he just had no idea what to do with it, since the charging light didn't go on.
I have seen some ebay sellers with good ratings, that say they provide JTAG service, for around 30 dollars.
These are cheaper than the 60 dollars from mobiletech. What do you guys recommend? Which one has less chance of scamming / more chance of unbricking?
thanks a lot!

screen light broken, which part to replace?

hey everyone, need a little help.
so my beloved evo is starting to have screen problems, with only 3 months left on my contract to go =(.
Now, here's the thing: only the backlight is not working. So if i turn on the screen, it actually is on. I can see that it is when i shine a flashlight into the screen. Everything still shows. I know its not because of a rom because i pulled the battery and it's like this on every screen, bootloader, recovery, the initial boot logo, etc.
I considered buying another phone, but given that i only have 3 months left on the contract, i figured it might be easier to just replace the broken part.
Does anyone know which part to replace in particular, or do I need to replace the whole screen? (not sure if the backlighting is part of the screen hardware).
Thanks in advance!
I think Sprint will try to fix the phone first ,if the technician can't fix the problem he will order you a new phone for free only if you have insurance ,so take it to your nearest Sprint ,some Sprint stores don't have tech support though you just ask if they do phone repair,.........oh and plz,plz UNROOT first before taking the phone

insurance is the thing you were supposed to pay for, right? if so, i dont have it.
also, kind of hard to unroot without being able to see the screen lol. It was hell just trying to figure who sent me text messages, let alone do anything else.

Thanks alot, this turned out to work better than I expected. The dude was able to replace the screen for me for $35, and did it within 10 minutes. You were right, he didnt care that it was rooted. He said it was cool what I did with it, in fact (thank the devs here!).
I also got really really lucky when I did this yesterday, cuz it just so happens that a Samsung mobile sales specialist (i think that's what his title is) was showcasing the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to the employees. He was nice enough to let me look at it as well, and I must say, it's a very very nice device. I just might upgrade to that when it comes out.

Yeah, that actually kinda does answer my original question. Technically, it is hard to look on Amazon if you don't know which part you're looking for. I only found out after the guy at the Sprint store who changed out the part for me told me that you just replace the whole screen. I initially wasnt sure if it was just simply the whole thing, or if there was a separate part for just the backlighting so that I didnt have to pay for a whole lcd screen. Also, buying a new lcd screen costs around 25$ on ebay. I paid 10 extra dollars to have it changed for me. Can't complain. The dude was done in less than 10 minutes.
Regardless, I got the phone fixed, and found my new potential upgrade phone =)
Glad you got it fixed

Cracked my N4's screen, unusable, where do I go from here? [UK]

So, it happened to me. Just my luck.
Was at university walking and the phone slipped from my hand onto the floor. It seemed to have survived that fairly well. Then it slid off the stairs (no barrier at the edge of the staircase going up my university) and fell about 8-10 feet onto the stair case below. Screen is ruined and unresponsive.
The phone is rooted and has an unlocked bootloader so I know this voids the warranty but I can lock the bootloader again and flash the phone back to the stock rom via cwm.
I bought the phone from Carphone Warehouse for £400 back in December because I couldn't wait and now I'm left with a brick. I need a phone to handle uni life and contact my fianceé in the States. I don't really want to have to spend money I don't have on a replacement N4 so is there anything I can do guys?
Any help at all will be extremely appreciated.
(I'd post a link to an image of the screen but cannot do so yet).
Thanks
Sorry to hear that, however the only option I think would've been better if you had phone insurance and it would replace your damaged phone and it would cost like 5 pounds a month. On the other hand maybe you can send it to Carphonewarehouse and see what the estimate is to get it repaired. Don't think rooted or not makes much difference in this situation.
Anyway good luck and hope you find some solution

Ouch, nightmare...
The only cheap way is to repair it yourself. If the mainboard is ok, get a new front and back panel. From the teardown I've seen of the Nexus 4, it doesn't seem that difficult. I'm sure there is a vid on youtube you can use as guide. If you can't do it yourself, a new phone seems to be the only option. At least it will be cheaper this time... Did you have a case on it when it dropped?

See that seems doable but the only problem is is the (is it aluminium?) that goes around the phone also got dented as it fell. This is even worse considering I actually DID have a case on it. I was using the Ringke Slim case. If anybody is using this case I highly recommend them to rethink their purchase because even though the phone hit the floor side on, it didn't protect it. Imagine if it hit face down. I have another generic 'S' silicone case from eBay and that would have done a far better job at protecting the sides. Shoulda, woulda, coulda eh?
Im wondering if LG's manufacture warranty will work in my favour at all? I just don't have the funds to replace the phone comfortably but that's the only option I see unfortunately.
I don't think you'll have any luck with warranty repair. Sorry about your phone though.

A coworker priced out replacing his front screen and it was ~$260usd.
At that point Id just order another phone and sell the first for parts.

Sell the phone for parts? How would that work? Im not very savvy with this side of phones. Do I sell the phone in its entirety to a company who buys things like that? Sell on eBay for really cheap trying to get whatever I can get?

Check their website there's a link from there. Give them a call register the phone with them log on to their website and create a claim. Then they ask you to send the phone in. Note: do everything recorded del. It costs £50 excess they turned mine around in under two weeks from start to finish

I disagree. The only cheap way to do it is via insurance, 50 quid excess or whatever is a lot cheaper than the 150 pound screen is going to cost.

[Q] Hard brick..

My phone is hard bricked. When I try to turn it on there is absolutely no response. The screen does not light up, the phone does not vibrate. Absolutely nothing. I'm pretty positive there is nothing I can do about this. I called sprint and they said take it to the store and if their techs can not do anything about it then they will send me a new phone. Is there anyway the techs could tell my phone has had roms on it or been rooted and therefore not send me a new phone? Also does anyone have any ideas on any solutions? I've tried odin and recovery, nothing is happening at all even when plugged in to USB or wall charger.
From other users experiences on various forums, it is generally seen that if the phone wont turn on then they can't tell if its been superusered, rooted, or had the rom blown to bits, just make sure to remove your sd card first to eliminate most possibilities of them finding out.

A lot of things actually.. First thing was I tried to boot in recovery from the rom and nothing happened so I pulled the battery out and put it back in and let the phone charge all night but it never charged overnight and when I woke up it was so hot I could barely hold it. So I tried to go to download mode and at the time I could so I downloaded the stock files and went to flash it to stock in Odin figuring it was the rom. The phone shut off during the middle of flashing the system.img and after that I somehow managed to get it to recovery and I was wiping the cache to flash the stock rom zip file and then it just shut off and every pixel on the screen slowly started turning like green and then flashed really bright and that's when it officially died.

Something similar happened to me and it ended up being a dead battery because the phone wouldn't charge it. I pulled my battery, charged it on a universal charger and was able to get it into Download mode. That was just my experience though. I hope you get it figured out.

My friend has an s4 as well and I tried his battery with no luck. Thanks though
Here is what you need to check for, plug it into the pc, go to device manager, under ports, the device should show up, what does it show?
If it says anything like QLOAD or similar (sorry been awhile) you are hard bricked, and a jtag service would be the only way, now if you exchange the device with sprint, it will be ok until some tech reviews it and plugs in his equipment, he may see the same, tmo tried get me to pay way back in my..mytouch days, had another issue with att early on, they didn't ever say anything, it was a hardware issue on that one.
bottom line, look in device manager first.
The Ax says good luck.

It's not that simple though. I'm sure a Sprint allocates a specific amount of funds every year for equipment replacement. I'm sure those getting replacements for bricking their phones makes up a very small percentage of the replacements they send out every year.

And what do you think would happen if a large portion of Sprints customers started bricking their phone's? Completely locked bootloaders, prices of everything including monthly plans, insurance and phones going up? I know when I had the S3 I saw several bricks a week from people messing with things that they shouldn't and by not following instructions. So in the end whether you realize it or not you and I pay for it. And going into Sprint and acting innocent like you have no idea what happened to your phone is fraud. Plain and simple.

[Q] Is this Nexus 4 bricked?

Hi there,
I'm trying to buy a Nexus 4 online and saw one selling for a good price.
Yet, as the seller puts it, it charges but won't boot, and one can also see the charging signal on the screen.
Seller doesn't say if it is bricked or not. Is this normal behavior on a bricked phone? Any chance of unbricking it?
Thanks!

ask them if they can see if it says google when they try to turn it on. if so, hopefully they think its bricked and sell it dirt cheap, thats literally a 2 minute fix in fast boot.

How to make my phone eligible for factory warranty?? Help!

So I went into my local mall and entered the Verizon store. Reason for my visit was to see if i can get a brand new s5. The s5 is waterproof and has a shield that covers the charger port. Well from normal use mine broke off. I just got my nexus 6 in and plan on selling my s5 to offset some of the cost. The clerk in verizon days he can process the warranty claim for me but if verizon determines it wasn't a phone defect I'll get charged up to 500 dollars. He also said if the Bluetooth wasn't working or something yes there wouldn't be any question it was my device and a worthy factory warranty claim. My question to ypu guys is does anyone have method to do just that. Not just disable my Bluetooth or anything that would suffice but break it lol. The phone is no where.near a year old yet. I could sell mine the way it is but it's not waterproof anymore. Any suggestions or advice on how I can permanently disable a feature that would allow a factory warranty claim to go through successfully? Please don't tell me I'm being greedy or just sell it the way it is. If u have some info that could help I'd appreciate it.
Thanks very much

If it's just the charging port cover buy a new one instead of purposely breaking the phone. It's not like they cost $100.00. Remove one screw and replace it. http://www.amazon.com/Unknown-S5-charging-port-cover/dp/B00MP1TLX4

No problem, I thought they would be more money but that's dirt cheap. I was pretty shocked.
Also, what you are essentially asking is for someone to help you commit fraud with the warranty.
replacing the cap is a much better option for all involved. good luck on selling it and with the new device.
I wouldn't think asking someone to help me permanently disable a feature on my phone is any different than downloading a rom that unlocks paid features no?

You are asking to help you commit insurance fraud. That is breaking the law and goes against all XDA stands for.
