Is there a ROM available that includes free mobile hotspot functionality? Mr device is rooted successfully by the sql hack doesn't appear to be an option anymore. Any assistance appreciated.

[MOD][4/14/2014] - Unlocked Tether - Remove Keyboard indicator! - Updated

i believe every rom out has hot spot enabled. lol.

Got it flashed, but now none of my devices connect. Password is right but devices get stuck authenticating.

When I log into Verizon's site it says that tethering is included for me. I use a ROM now but even on stock with root you could use a toggle, a bunch of apps can do it i think i used Power Toggles

Well, the issue appears to have resolved itself. It's working fine now on all my devices.

Rooting the stock rom does not give you free hotspot capabilities. The stock os has a way of knowing if you try using 3rd party wi-fi hotspot apps from the Market and Verizon may send you a nasty letter to cease doing that.
There are however a bunch of custom ROMs that will allow you to use your Droid X as a mobile hotspot without getting hit by Verizon with the nasty letter and/or an additional $30/month hotspot charge.
If you really love the stock os and still want to have free wi-fi hotspot/tether capability then you could use a custom sbf file created by user wugfresh over at the droidxforums website. I don't think I can give you the link here but you can do a Google search for "WugPacked GB Tether Patch" and it should come up as the first link in your search results.
I've used this for a while in the past and it worked great for me.
Okay. Thanks.

[Q] Stolen or lost

Hi,
My Nexus 7 was stolen or lost yesterday. I have no security app installed but I have the lock screen activated.
Can I locate it?
What should I do?
Kind regards
/x
Be more careful with your things?
=P
Sorry mate, without anything already installed I think you're out of luck

Search the forum. Looks like there is a way if it, by the force of nature, connect by itself to an open wifi. You can let a app already queueu to download. I guess there is some security app that dont need your intervention on tablet. I guess.
Good look.

Download plan b from the play store.

I have looked into Plan B and pushing it to install. But it can only install if the device connects via WiFi, and I don't see how it can connect to any WiFi unless it comes back to my house....

[GUIDE]Enable stock tethering - Root Required

For those that want to tether but don't want to pay your carrier for it...
Root is required.
1) Download your favorite SQL editor. I use SQLite Editor.
2) Open and grant root access.
3) Scroll down and find Settings Storage
4) Choose settings.db (duh)
5) Go down to line 65 and change the value for entitlement check from 1 to 0.
6) Reboot.
7) Profit.
Historically this has stuck through updates as the databases don't change when you update.
Thank you jcase for root!

I wonder if the changes to settings will survive reboot because system is not writeable atm
in what folder does settings storage live? I cant seem to find it.
It does persist through reboot. The change actually won't work until after reboot.

Use the native tether (via Settings) once you've updated the DB.
Oh got it working. I just had to reboot the phone. Thanks!

No need to buy SQLite Editor
For those who don't want to pay for the SQLite Editor app, you can still gain wifi tethering/hotspot with this free alternative.
1. Download the free apps aShell and aSQLiteManager from Play Store.
2. Launch aShell, check the "Root" box, then hit "File Explorer" button.
3. Browse to /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases, and open up settings.db with aSQLiteManager.
4. Now choose the "settings" table, hit "Data" button.
5. "PgDn" until you see "65. entitlement_check" and change that value from 1 to 0.
You're done! Restart and wifi tethering/hotspot will work now.

It requires you to enter a password though every time you unlock your phone. This method does not, and this method enables use of the built in android hotspot

Yeah it's annoying to have that. I also found foxfi to have random drops in connection so streaming or gaming was affected. The stock app is much more stable with connection.
Yeah. I was thinking Foxfi too til I realized it cripples touchless control due to forcing a lock screen. Then root came and I didn't care anymore

Any way to disable notifications of what connects and disconnects? I figured if I disabled all notifications in status bar the app would be killed.

Hotspot

If I root my phone gs4, does that mean I can use hotspot for free? Or is free hotspot usually included in the rom?

try searching
As W7 said. This is such and old question. Do yourself a favor and find the answer yourself.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 4
Rooting your phone allows you to install software that you otherwise wouldn't be able to, due to carrier or device software limitations.
IF you root your phone, there are a large number of hotspot apps that you can install that will provide a hotspot for you. ROM's are usually just a collection of software (with the occasional performance tweak) that you can install. 99 times out of 100, ROM authors have merely borrowed someone else's hotspot app and packaged it in with the rest of the apps that they like. So no, you do not need to install a ROM just to install a hotspot app.
<Necessary Legalese> Keep in mind though, that if you cannot install a hotspot app and one was not provided on your phone, it's likely against the terms of service from your carrier.
I've done the searching and I realize this might be old, but I've been using hotspot with my gs4 for free and I don't have any hotspot apps. I'm running pacman but id like to play with other ROMs, just don't want to lose my free hotspot ability.

the vast majority of roms have wireless tether built in. if you find one that dosent then there are multiple apps to make the feature avaliable.

WiFi tether

All the methods I've tried either don't work or no longer are available. Are there any current methods that work? AT&T tells me it would cost me $50/mo and I'd lose my unlimited data plan because tethering somehow doesn't work on unlimited data plans "square peg in a round hole" they tell me. Of course they couldn't explain why it wouldnt work nor could they explain why the tether feature is nearly double my unlimted plan cost.

on stock u can replace their wifi verification file (TetheringProvision.apk) with a hacked one "root required" or u can put practically any compatible rom on your phone and they work great. i recommend option b personally. i tried goldeneye and never looked back.
I am rooted but I'm not comfy with SS yet which is why I havent flashed a ROM yet. I used to use barnicle but I think its no longer available. So my best met is to use a costom ROM?

ss wont break your phone as long as you dont touch your stock rom with it. i never had great success with the hacked provision file, it worked, but not great. i get ridiculous speed and stability on a rom. or u can get a saw and square that hole out to fit the peg.
I'm on a rooted, stock phone and use ES File Explorer to allow me to Wifi tether. Works perfectly for me.

With wifi off, you open ES File Explorer, then browse to Tools - Net Manager. Tap on "Create a hotspot network". It will then show you the name of the network and password. Connect to it, and you are good to go.

This worked for my att s4
Dl the tether app here http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS4/SGH-i337/tether
Then dl root browser off the play store
After you dl the tether app open root browser and go to system /app
Then you will see a tether apk file
Press and rename the. Apk to. Bak.
Then go to your download folder via root browser and look for the tether app you dl.
Press copy and then go back to system/app and paste it.
Reboot
Start the tether app and enjoy..
Sent from my GS4...
I was able to get the other method to work. When the att message pops up all I have to do is hit the home button...guess it bypasses the "you can't do this" message.
