All the methods I've tried either don't work or no longer are available. Are there any current methods that work? AT&T tells me it would cost me $50/mo and I'd lose my unlimited data plan because tethering somehow doesn't work on unlimited data plans "square peg in a round hole" they tell me. Of course they couldn't explain why it wouldnt work nor could they explain why the tether feature is nearly double my unlimted plan cost.

on stock u can replace their wifi verification file (TetheringProvision.apk) with a hacked one "root required" or u can put practically any compatible rom on your phone and they work great. i recommend option b personally. i tried goldeneye and never looked back.
I am rooted but I'm not comfy with SS yet which is why I havent flashed a ROM yet. I used to use barnicle but I think its no longer available. So my best met is to use a costom ROM?

ss wont break your phone as long as you dont touch your stock rom with it. i never had great success with the hacked provision file, it worked, but not great. i get ridiculous speed and stability on a rom. or u can get a saw and square that hole out to fit the peg.
I'm on a rooted, stock phone and use ES File Explorer to allow me to Wifi tether. Works perfectly for me.

With wifi off, you open ES File Explorer, then browse to Tools - Net Manager. Tap on "Create a hotspot network". It will then show you the name of the network and password. Connect to it, and you are good to go.

This worked for my att s4
Dl the tether app here http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS4/SGH-i337/tether
Then dl root browser off the play store
After you dl the tether app open root browser and go to system /app
Then you will see a tether apk file
Press and rename the. Apk to. Bak.
Then go to your download folder via root browser and look for the tether app you dl.
Press copy and then go back to system/app and paste it.
Reboot
Start the tether app and enjoy..

I was able to get the other method to work. When the att message pops up all I have to do is hit the home button...guess it bypasses the "you can't do this" message.

I am not on att I'm in another country with no tethering restrictions.

Can't edit from my phone but in an update to what I wrote earlier. Editing the build.prop file actually worked but required a reboot.
In retrospect I should have thought of that but it wasn't listed in the op.
So, if you are also getting this problem
Follow the directions on this post

Then REBOOT AFTER.

I actually have an employee plan so 40 for unlimited and tethering but if you add the apn u can also use barnicle wifi tether. U can't find it on the market (anymore/F-u too att) you'll have to Google but it is better than using my included option in network settings. I have also used the open one on code.Google.com and has been great. I love my atrix and webtop and lapdock but if I had a chance at getting it all on tmo or sprint, I'd jump ship. Making Google hide apps from it's own users? Wtf? If I were sprint I'd be praying att buys tmo because everyone would run to sprint. If I didn't have said plan, I'm not sure I could take the abuse they give their high paying customers.

The OS built-in HotSpot for free? Nope, not gonna happen until root and BootLoader unlock and we can flash a custom ROM.
However, there are a few programs that can do data sharing (tethering) without root, which do it in a method that it is not the same as the hotspot so it doesn't trigger the need to subscribe to the hotspot feature. I believe EasyTether has touted that, but it is for Wired/BlueTooth connections only, and not as a mobile WiFi hotspot.
All in all, if you want to use carrier provided features on a stock build, be prepared to pay for the privilege. Just be glad you are grandfathered into the unlimited plans.
EasyTether works great but you need the USB cable plugged into your PC and you need to install the EasyTether app on your PC also. Its $5 on Amazon App Store.
I've seen a little about this - but couldn't find the answer.
Sorry if I'm repeating on someone else's thread.
I've got a Rooted (EC07) Continuum right now & just came from a Droid 1 (which I loved).
I can't find a way to remove the 3G Mobile Hotspot app from Verizon.
On my D1, I previously used Wireless Tether 2 & it was so awesome.
No when I open up the 3G otspot, it takes the device that is hooking up to my hotspot to a Verizon web page that requests a subscription.
I just want to use it free again, like on my D1.
Any suggestions on how I could do this?
I have already tried downloading other Wireless Teher apps apps & none of them seems to work properly.
Thanks.
I suppose you could remove the app with an explorer or Titanium Backup. I doubt it would get rid of it in the settings menu. I use open garden, and it works fine (assuming you aren't trying to connect with something that can't use ad-hoc)

Why not you guys check out wireless tether beta 7 or whatever they are onto now, and go to settings, and set it as a fascinate xD then you can actually use it as a regular network, not adhoc xP

The app is built into the framework of the ROM I believe, or is tied into another piece of the ROM that can't be removed. The only way to really "remove" it is to use a launcher that allows you to hide app icons and just remove it from view.

Thanks guys.
I appreciate the info. Just got wifi tether 6.
Also you can "freeze" 3g hotspot, and anything else that's annoying you, using "Bloat Freezer", found in the market for $1.99. Or with Titanium Backup Pro (paid version) which is worth its weight in gold anyway.
that literaly does nothing except prevent the app from running and the app dosnt run in the background when your not using it. the bloat freezer is ment for apps using gps and updating weather that drains your battery.
I am running Juggernaut ROM and used it to tether quite heavily this past few days. I received a text message from T Mobile telling me to sign up for their tethering plan. I think they were monitoring the amount of data usage I was using and I exceeded some limit over a certain time frame. Is there anyway around this? Previously I only tethered for a few hours at most. Thanks.

Google how to change the user agent on your internet browser. The T-mobile upsell page only shows up when it detects you're using a desktop browser via the user agent. Try tethering to a tablet or Google Chrome with the user agent set to Firefox and it works fine even after they send you the message saying your tethering is blocked.

The quick workaround for the tether monitor upsell is to use a VPN... You can use a free service (I use VPN Reactor) or a paid service (such as StrongVPN).
To find and setup VPN Reactor, use HTTPS://www.google.com to perform a search... VPN Reactor is a secure (HTTPS) site and the upsell notice will not appear (which you might have noticed when checking any other secure site, such as GMail).
I hope this helps those looking for a solution to the tether upsell notice.
Idk if this is possible but using cm9 and aokp I have had no problems with tethering, and from what I have been reading perhaps aosp derivative roms don't have this issue?

They still know you're doing it.
I got this same text message from TMobile, even though they recommended getting a tethering plan I didn't and they said I wouldn't be able to tether anymore.

Wow I had just rooted my cousins phone and came across this issue as he got two text messages briefly after tethering.
download Logging Test App and the pro key off the market, gets rid of CIQ in juggs and not to mention makes the phone run like its ass is on fire... just be sure to run threw everything, and try not to brick yourself.... and if you don't backup and loose your os.. i just might die laughing

No, you cant. Freezing that does not somehow hide your tethering data usage

yeah, you've got to get rid of tethering manager completely.... in other words find a rom that doesn't need it!
TMo can stop you from tethering if they want to, It's just a balance of the expected revenue gain and the likely backlash. If a nasty message accomplishes one without the other, it's a no brainer.
If you are rooted on a custom rom from the development section most likely you shouldn't receive any messages. That doesn't mean they aren't tracking your data. You will be throttled to 60kbs when you've reached the limit. For most people that's 2 or 5 gigs of data. There used to be a work around for the throttle but it's been patched.

For those that want to tether but don't want to pay your carrier for it...
Root is required.
1) Download your favorite SQL editor. I use SQLite Editor.
2) Open and grant root access.
3) Scroll down and find Settings Storage
4) Choose settings.db (duh)
5) Go down to line 65 and change the value for entitlement check from 1 to 0.
6) Reboot.
7) Profit.
Historically this has stuck through updates as the databases don't change when you update.
Thank you jcase for root!

in what folder does settings storage live? I cant seem to find it.
It does persist through reboot. The change actually won't work until after reboot.

No need to buy SQLite Editor
For those who don't want to pay for the SQLite Editor app, you can still gain wifi tethering/hotspot with this free alternative.
1. Download the free apps aShell and aSQLiteManager from Play Store.
2. Launch aShell, check the "Root" box, then hit "File Explorer" button.
3. Browse to /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases, and open up settings.db with aSQLiteManager.
4. Now choose the "settings" table, hit "Data" button.
5. "PgDn" until you see "65. entitlement_check" and change that value from 1 to 0.
You're done! Restart and wifi tethering/hotspot will work now.

Yeah it's annoying to have that. I also found foxfi to have random drops in connection so streaming or gaming was affected. The stock app is much more stable with connection.
