When i received the phone today (around 3pm uk time) after an hour playing around with it i noticed 3 dark thick lines on the bottom half of the screen (on a gray background) i thought nothing of it at first and continued to use the phone.
Only just now i thought there must be a problem so i displayed a full white image and you could really notice those 3 thick dark lines. I then changed the screen brightness to max, min then back to auto and it was gone... BUT! when the screen dims a bit just before turning off i can see those 3 thick lines again just for those few seconds before the screen turns off.. it doesnt really effect me but it annoys me that they are there.. plus there might be problems with it in the future. I'm gonna go to my local Carphone Warehouse tomorrow and see if they can replace it.
I just want to know if any one else has had this screen problem.
Thanks.
Do the lines correspond to anything that is on the screen often like the keyboard or some sort of widget you have on your home screen?
These SAMOLED screens suffer from image retention and possibly burn-in. I've noticed it on my original galaxy as well as the Nexus S. As long as the lines go away after a few seconds it should be nothing to worry about. If you notice them there always then that could be a problem... usually the easiest way to see them is on a flat gray background.

oh boy, its too soon to be having any burn in. might be another issue.
my nexus one has burn in of the status bar at the top. and i can see a burn in of my entire keyboard on a white image. after more than a year of using the phone, oh well. but the status bar burn in was there within the first month.

the lines are:
1: just above where the 4 icons are at the bottom of the screen
2: where the page numbers are (dots)
3: just below the other 4 icons (widgets)
Thing is that these lines are solid and have no breaks in them.. so i dont think its the 3 points i gave above this.
I know it's too early for burn-in but some screens (might I say... all?) come from the factory with some sort of flaw. None of them are perfect and most have flaws so imperceptible that most people wouldn't notice. Every nexus S and Galaxy I've seen had some sort of area or line or multiple lines on the screen which were a bit different color, not as bright, or something along those lines. Some are worse than others, and I noticed the flaws right after taking it out of the box brand new. (I've been through about 6 Nexus S's between me and a few friends).
It's not really the same as a traditional LCD/LED screen since there's not a big backlight. Each pixel is individually lit and some may have specifications that are just on the edge of within manufacturer limits. There's almost 400,000 pixels on the screen... the chances of all of them being created identically is slim to none.
If it bothers you I say just take it back and get an exchange, showing them the problem area on the screen. Just hope your new one will be "less flawed" =)

Yeah, The last phone i had, had problems with the camera.. i went through about 5 of them and i ended up with one that was the same as the first one i had.
Can you guys have a look at yours?
Just open up a pure white image and check.. if there are no lines wait till it dims the screen and check again... thanks.

take a screen shot of the problem? might not show but worth a try, then post it.
if it is really faulty, you should contact the seller to replace it.
I am really sorry for you, I will personal be mad if my long waited SGS2 comes with a super amoled plus faulty screen

well i dont have a good quality camera. You might of seen it before i changed the brightness settings but now that i have its kind of faint and you can only see it when the screen dims..
Gonna go to carphone warehouse now be back later
well before i went i called up all the carphone warehouses near me and none of them have stock.
I was told i only have two options:
1: go to a carphone warehouse and exchange.
2: go to a carphone warehouse and get a refund then order it online again.
So i should get a new one by tomorrow.. or atlest on friday.
no poroblems like that with mine. Screen is freaking perfect. On a side note i liked doing this test because I love staring at the screen.
Drooooool
well.. i went to a carphone warehouse.. and they had two instock. I exchanged it.. screen is fine but.. now after i got home i can see a mark/ dig inbetween the screen and the bezel (where the gap is)
again it doesnt really effect me but god.. now that i know its there.. i notice it so much that.. i might exchange it again Y_Y
This happens to me every single time i buy a new phone >.<... trust my luck!

well well well.
Went to lakeside since the one near me closed at 7pm.
Changed the phone again and this one had the lines on the screen and a dig in the silver bezel. She gave me another phone and the screen was perfect and there are no digs on the silver bezel...
In 2 days iv had my hands on 4 different S2's lol..
Last phone i had i also had 4 of them cause of XXX problems.. thought i was gonna beat it today and have 5 XD
Geebuz wept! I'm getting mine in from the UK tomorrow. I hope for hell sake it doesn't have imperfections. The ship back to the UK would be a disaster and if that one has a dig in the bezel upon return I'd blow a valve!
FINGERS CROSSED MINE IS PERFECT
as far as i know. this is the grid pattern on the super amoled screens. however. because of the poor QA/QC of the screens, some of those grid patterns are more visible than other area of the screen.
the whole super amoled is about lines on a grid pattern. if you notice more deeply, you will see that you also have those " lines " some where else on the screen yet they are not visible as the one you noticed.
i had to go through 4 galaxy S1 to get a good one where the pattern isnt "visible " through the whole screen.
its a defective unit. mainly poor Qa/QC. if you can live with it, it wont do you any harms. or get bigger. if you cant, then change it.
or and make sure you dont have a dud phone with piss poor yellow white on high brightness or pink gray on low brightness. because thats also a defect in super amoled screens.
"Screen burn-in, image burn-in or ghost image, colloquially known as screen burn or screen afterimage, is a permanent discoloration of areas on an electronic display such as a cathode ray tube(CRT) display or computer display monitor ortelevision set caused by cumulative non-uniform usage of the pixels." ( http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_burn-in )
Sad but true. Barely noticeable though. My "first batch" SGS2's (bought as soon as it was released in the UK market) SAMOLED+ screen shows a persistend shadow of the battery indicator icon on the notification bar, even before completing its first year of heavy usage
Well, all I can say is that I'm not planning to buy a SGS3, as I hope my S2 will still be fine until the S4 will be released
Don't worry mate it will last, I'm very sure
I had this phobia when I first had my sgs, yes there is burn in the screen but sgs looks fantastic & 100 % usable despite surviving great deal of falls (including water bath)

Happened to mine too, mostly noticeable on all-gray screens. I've had mine for around 7 months, and I think it started forming after 5 months of use. Maybe it's covered under warranty?
Remember plasma tv? Wait, they're still being produced, unfortunately... I remember the term 'ghosting' as the vernacular back then.

I also still have my old i8910 aka OmniaHD, and the display is still perfectly fine (its racked up a few scratches since it doesn't have the same gorrilla glass as the S2 but the actual amoled screen is fine)
PS, the i8910HD/OmniaHD screen uses AMOLED not Super AMOLED/SAMOLED
don't worry too much about Amoled technologies, if they have problems, Samsung should fix them since they are Samsungs technologies, so take advantage of that warranty.

Can see the status bar on mine aswell, about 8 months of usage now. Doesnt help that the bar is always black so the leds are off and dont degrade naturally along with the rest of them.
Mine is part of first batch too and I've got the same issue as well now. Under notification bar, very visible when using the browser and viewing videos. Only started seeing it since last few days! Not a major problem but it's annoying to see it there and sure will affect re-sale value if I plan to sell it.
For anyone else who might be worried, if you install Apex Launcher from the Shop you can custom configure your phone to hide the Status bar either by a menu check box or an on screen swype gesture.
I'm actually using apex launcher, however the screen is already marked Not big issue though

Apex launcher hides the notification bar, but if you open an application, lets say GPS, the notification bar is visible again. will this happen also with Go launcher?
is there any way to hide the notification bar completely and make it visible when i choose?
thanks,
There is a difference (at least on plasma TVs) between permanent burn in and image retention. Anyone with a newish plasma screen still suffers from image retention but permanent burn in is now rare.
If the same principles apply to these oled screens then could you not just get a slide pack (which is essentially around 12 images of pure colour such as red, blue and green in various tones) put them in their own folder then run a continuous slide show. On plasma screens at least this usually removes the burned in image.
Another method is to run a video of white noise for many hours (easily achieved on a TV of course.)
Is this theory relevant to oled screens?

I too, have a ghost image. however it is at the bottom of the screen and is the Opera Mini toolbar very annoying: (
Ever since I've seen this thread, I've been paying close attention to the Galaxy S2 screen to see if there is any image retention or burn as such. I've had this phone since June/July 2011. Just moderate use. And so far nothing of the sort has happened. But thanks to the people, I know what to look out for. I never thought such screens would have these 'ancient' issues.

curious is anyone else has seen this or anything like this. (picture attached)
we got two of these phones in mid december and I just noticed on my phone, while sitting in the dark using the phone, that an odd line becomes visible.
the brighter the screen, the more apparent it is or if I view the phone more from a side angle.
it rotates accordingly if if rotate the phone which makes me thing it's a physical problem with the phone.
I did a screen capture of the screen, and that didn't capture the line, so this is looking more and more like a hardware problem
my wife's phone seems to be fine.
the phone is basically new, opened on christmas, and never dropped. there's absolutely not physical damange to the phone and there's no apparent crack on the outer glass that I can feel or see and as far as I can tell, screen response is fine in the area.
the only thing I can think of is t-mo just shipped the darn phones together in one of those cheap bubble envelopes, and when i opened mine, some of the corners of the cardboard that the phone rested in, within the nexus box, seemd to be crushed in a bit, though again, there's no apparent physical damage that I saw externally.
anyone else seen anything like this, cause I've not heard of any other folks complaining about anything like this
wondering if i should try getting it replaced, though i guess it would require waiting for one to be shipped as i don't think any of my local stores have them yet. thoughts?
Sends more like a screen defect than a crack. Try using a screen color test. If its still there, then do an RMA

just went ahead and ordered a replacement....but adding more pictures if anyone else encounters similar
does seem to be something with the hardware, as it was there with color test apps...just less visible when screen was darker
Looks like a screen defect to me not a crack. U did the right thing RMAing it. At least u have a usable phone while u wait.

If you shine a light across the face of the screen almost level with the screen and watch as you move the light from across to pointing down then you may see the line with more detail and maybe a reflection of it.
If you put the phone on lower brightness or auto-brightness, do you see faint vertical and horizontal "streaks" of discoloration or shading? It's especially apparent in the dark, and on grey backgrounds. My phone has this exact problem, and I tried taking it to a Verizon store to exchange it and they refused, because the two S4's on display had similar issues (although less apparent). So either this is a very common problem on the S4 or I'm just incredibly unlucky. Would like to hear from other Galaxy S4 owners to see how widespread this really is.

I didn't get a 1-1. Went to the service centre. First time it was an issue with the sound crackling but somehow they changed the screen when they shouldn't (and I still hate them for it).
The replaced screen had a greenish blotch in the middle, so back it went.
Third had two dead pixels so I sent it back.
Fourth they replaced on the spot for it had a big piece of dust inside the screen.
Fifth has a small speck of dust under the screen which they refused to change for me in the end.
Still quite a bummer that five screens later I still ended up with a less-than-perfect screen. But I just gave up and it doesn't affect me too much nowadays.
I have the same problem.

Yup, I have this issue too on my international S4 (GT-I9500). This only happens with grey. The screen tests for red, green and blue are perfect. And they're only usually visible in the dark. Best way to show them the problem is to search 'solid grey' on Google Images, save one of them and show them the image on full screen in the dark. After seeing that, it'll be pretty much impossible to deny that it is a problem. I took it to service and got a screen replacement under warranty, but it didn't help. Still has those stupid lines. Most apparent in the dark on solid gray. I'm taking it back to the store on Monday, if they replace the handset and that fixes it, I'll get back to you.
Me too
I think this is another variant of the smudges that are apparent in amoled screens sometimes. Search Google for lines in amoled displays or something similar. There's loads of threads talking about the same thing.
At any rate, it seems to just be luck of the draw as to how bad it is, or if you even get it at all.
At least, if you have them, they don't worsen over time, and any phones that are made with amoled screens can get them. I have two lines myself. I've just gotten used to it really. Don't see them now, unless I look hard for them.

Hello,
I have a Moto X Style.
Just a few hours ago started seeing a white very thin vertical line in the middle of the screen that goes from top to the bottom.
Didn't do anything special with the phone, scrolling facebook... just turned off the screen, and then turned it on and voila... it's there
The line is most noticeable in bright blue screen. Tried to take a picture of it, but doesn't have good camera so it isn't noticeable in pictures. Also it doesn't shows on screenshots and it appears even in recovery so it's definitely hardware...
The phone is only 3 months old... But I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted so I think the warranty is void...
Does anyone have/had some expirience with this and can help me?
Or the only way is to pay for a repair?
Thanks in advance...

If no physical damage moto will repair unlocked phones that have hardware failure. Best to get a ticket started and get some help over in their forums. Advanced swap is best even if it costs a couple bucks.

Anyway, yesterday happened another strange thing. I was taking pictures with the camera, then noticed that all the screen covered with white horizontal lines half transparent as if it is some sort of interference.. Restarted the phone and the lines disappeared, but also the vertical line got much thinner. You need to search for it really hard to find it. So maybe it was stuck pixels or something? I don't know
So it leads me to confusion. Either i leave it as it is as the problem is barely there, but then I'm afraid it will come back later, or i talk to Motorola, but then how am i gonna prove them if they won't find the line?
Thanks
Sent from my XT1572 using Tapatalk
I would discuss it with them regardless. If you still see the problem then they should be able to as well. Be persistent and very detailed about the problem. If you can get photos magnified showing the issue more clearly, even better as it clarifies the exact problem.

OP already stated it doesn't come up in screenshots. It's clearly a hardware issue...
I have this issue I believe. Except that it's when I dim the screen the previous images on the screen will not refresh.
See video I shot of it, at 1min 30sec I can start to see the ghosting. The white lines come and go too, usually when the screen is off and I wave at it to get the circles to appear so I can pause/play music. The more black on a screen the more likely it is to get lines down it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DGNIANLzKA
Any luck in fixing this? My phone has the same issue and I keep reading things that say its a driver problem. Really seems to be hardware to me though, given that the same issue shows up in recovery mode...
Hi, same issue here. Had it for ages now, tried to return mine but Moto refused repair as my bootloader is unlocked. Have this issue in each and every ROM I try, stock or custom. Definitely seems like hardware.
If I keep the screen brightness up above 50% it's fine but anything below about 50% and it's unusable.
