"Screen burn-in, image burn-in or ghost image, colloquially known as screen burn or screen afterimage, is a permanent discoloration of areas on an electronic display such as a cathode ray tube(CRT) display or computer display monitor ortelevision set caused by cumulative non-uniform usage of the pixels." ( http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_burn-in )
Sad but true. Barely noticeable though. My "first batch" SGS2's (bought as soon as it was released in the UK market) SAMOLED+ screen shows a persistend shadow of the battery indicator icon on the notification bar, even before completing its first year of heavy usage
Well, all I can say is that I'm not planning to buy a SGS3, as I hope my S2 will still be fine until the S4 will be released
Don't worry mate it will last, I'm very sure
I had this phobia when I first had my sgs, yes there is burn in the screen but sgs looks fantastic & 100 % usable despite surviving great deal of falls (including water bath)

Happened to mine too, mostly noticeable on all-gray screens. I've had mine for around 7 months, and I think it started forming after 5 months of use. Maybe it's covered under warranty?
Remember plasma tv? Wait, they're still being produced, unfortunately... I remember the term 'ghosting' as the vernacular back then.

Dear friend
Do not worry. Your GS2 screen will last till GS4 is released.:thumbup::thumbup:
I have an Omnia HD with Sammy's first SAMOLED screen and it's screen still retains it's pristine look without any Burn in's.(with moderate use from Sep. 2009 to till date).

I also still have my old i8910 aka OmniaHD, and the display is still perfectly fine (its racked up a few scratches since it doesn't have the same gorrilla glass as the S2 but the actual amoled screen is fine)
PS, the i8910HD/OmniaHD screen uses AMOLED not Super AMOLED/SAMOLED
don't worry too much about Amoled technologies, if they have problems, Samsung should fix them since they are Samsungs technologies, so take advantage of that warranty.

Can see the status bar on mine aswell, about 8 months of usage now. Doesnt help that the bar is always black so the leds are off and dont degrade naturally along with the rest of them.
Mine is part of first batch too and I've got the same issue as well now. Under notification bar, very visible when using the browser and viewing videos. Only started seeing it since last few days! Not a major problem but it's annoying to see it there and sure will affect re-sale value if I plan to sell it.
For anyone else who might be worried, if you install Apex Launcher from the Shop you can custom configure your phone to hide the Status bar either by a menu check box or an on screen swype gesture.
I'm actually using apex launcher, however the screen is already marked Not big issue though

Apex launcher hides the notification bar, but if you open an application, lets say GPS, the notification bar is visible again. will this happen also with Go launcher?
is there any way to hide the notification bar completely and make it visible when i choose?
thanks,
There is a difference (at least on plasma TVs) between permanent burn in and image retention. Anyone with a newish plasma screen still suffers from image retention but permanent burn in is now rare.
If the same principles apply to these oled screens then could you not just get a slide pack (which is essentially around 12 images of pure colour such as red, blue and green in various tones) put them in their own folder then run a continuous slide show. On plasma screens at least this usually removes the burned in image.
Another method is to run a video of white noise for many hours (easily achieved on a TV of course.)
Is this theory relevant to oled screens?

I too, have a ghost image. however it is at the bottom of the screen and is the Opera Mini toolbar very annoying: (
Ever since I've seen this thread, I've been paying close attention to the Galaxy S2 screen to see if there is any image retention or burn as such. I've had this phone since June/July 2011. Just moderate use. And so far nothing of the sort has happened. But thanks to the people, I know what to look out for. I never thought such screens would have these 'ancient' issues.

I just got a new nexus one swapped 2 days ago from HTC under warranty. I'm running MIUI on the new nexus and I just noticed that my notification bar burned onto the screen. I had MIUI on the last nexus for about a month and nothing happened to the screen, had to get it changed for different reason.
I was thinking it was due to the fact that miui's notification bar is transparent or somehow the screen didn't turn off during the night, but then all of the other things(icon, etc.) would have burned onto the screen.
Im going to call HTC and find out what they have to say. But does anyone have any insight to this. I really dont want to leave MIUI, really like that rom.
This is going to be a risk you run with refurbed Nexus Ones. Most people run them with white notification bars. I have two Nexus Ones and even being careful I have some burn-in. I run my everyday Nexus with a black notification bar and still there is slight burn in(uneven wear). I've never personally seen a Nexus without some form of burn in(uneven wear) from the notification bar. It is the most persistent part of the UI, even when you hide it with something like LauncherPro, etc.., it will pop up when in the market, and other apps that do not have the option to hide it. etc..
I'm running mine with the stock white notification bar as I'm 100% stock. I don't see any burn in on my screen. Any ways to check with an app that makes it more visible?

try going in to the Gmail app, then go in to an email with not much text and scroll down until you have a white screen, and look at the left side of the screen(in landscape) against the white background.
that said, if you do not notice it now, I WOULD NOT GO LOOKING FOR IT...you will most likely find it and it will start bothering you.
I guess thats why gingerbread went with black notification bar.
I only notice the burn in on my N1 when I'm on Google's homepage

Yeah, I noticed it using Floating Image myself, a nifty program that floats images from your camera dirs and the internet past you. Noticed the notification bar area looked odd, then looked closer and realized it was darker.
I've since started using a ROM with a dark notification bar, maybe mitigate it a bit, although I suspect the clock being in the same place all the time will burn up there too.
Too much for not looking for it. I just went on the Google homepage in landscape and I saw a tiny tiny bit of burn in like barely noticable. So I turned my brightness to Max to see if it was more visible and I couldn't see it on 100% brightness. Only when its on lowest brightness am I able to see the burn in. Good enough for me

yeah pretty much anything that is persistent is going to possibly cause an issue. I'm glad Google is going with black now. I think it looks better and is safer for our AMOLED screens. As far as I know, this is not an issue for folks with SLCD Nexus ones since LCD phosphors have a much higher half life so do not show this issue until you are pretty much ready to upgrade your device....if it ever shows. LCD tech is much further advanced in this area than AMOLED.

Just be careful of using high brightness: it will age the pixels quicker and make it even more noticeable. Best thing to do is use a launcher like Launcher pro and hide the bar as much as you can for awhile to "wipe" the worn pixels. Same with any apps that allow for hiding the notification bar in settings. That will improve it some and then you can use the black bar that will come with Gingerbread and you should be good. It wont be gone 100% but will be barely visible at that point.

My 2nd hand Nexus One has burn in of the title bar. TBH I'm not that bothered; its very unlikely I'll even still have this phone this time next year. How long do some of you folks really think you'll own this phone for? I just ignore it.
I do use a theme with a black bar now anyway.
I wonder if the SAMOLED stuff suffers this issue?

Ok, i own my galaxy about 5 months. I turned the backlight to 0% in andromax, started the xda app and saw my battery, signal indicator and time as a shadow at the brown xda loadscreen. brightness was always set to auto.
I know this effect on plasma tvs, but with amoled, shouldn't be possible by design.

It's usual degradation of OLEDs. As the statusbar is quite static those pixels that are always light degrade faster than pixels than other ("not so static") pixels.
Now the more degraded pixels are darker on the same voltage levels and this can be seen when the statusbar is hidden.
That's one of the disadvantages of OLEDs currently.

Try rebooting your phone, then in the keypad dial *#0*# and test the screen with the options there check if there is any error in colour reproduction. Or test with images created with paint with only a single colour paint and test it with the screen on galaxy s.
If you observe any colour out of place or not uniform throughout, it might due to hardware issue of the amoled screen.
Hope this helps
checked via sgs tools secret codes (the code from above) lcdtest. degration is there for green and blue, hard to see in red.
will test some disco flash app, maybe it will get better like with plasma panels.
all in all, it is only annoying and the display will get damaged by design. I wonder, if there is a theme for the bar with less contrast grafics, like most tvstation did with there stationsymbol.

The blue pixel organic compound of AMOLED will degrade the quickest. That's the reason these phones are programmed to be more blueish when new, so that as it degrades, the blue should still be visible until the screen dies.
I own my SGS I9000 now since the 25th of June and i don't have that problem, how long is your total amount of Screen on time? I think by intensive use my approx. Screen on time per day is about 2 h. 6 Months are 180 days a 2h are 360h. Industrial Keys for Control Panels with OLED Displays have a average lifetime of 15000h, newer one 30000h.
I don't knew the lifetime for Samsungs AMOLED Screens but i guess it sould be around 10 to 15k hours. So i would contact seller, or samsung service about that.

In the UK you're covered by the Sale of Goods Act - the phone should be expected to last a good 5 years or so. I didn't agree to anything about a failing screen so if it doesn't last an appropriate time then I'll be expecting a replacement screen.

UK law says a product is expected to last 12 months however Samsung do have a 24 month warranty on this product which is nice. If i was you kempas i would have that repaired (screen replacement) as it's completely free except for the time it takes.
Samsung Warranty Information
Just remember to flash back a factory firmware before you send it to a repair centre, custom/modified firmware voids your warranty in any country.
I've got my phone for about 4 months, everyone else I know can see a visible silhouette on the AM/PM symbol with a blue/white image displayed on the screen.
I guess in a year's time its gonna be completely screen burned.. would this mean that SAMOLED is pretty much in infancty/trial stage?

Pretty damn quickly. Well it wont die, but burn-in will set in and the screen brightness will degrade.
Although if you use an app like alarm clock Plus it shouldn't be a problem. When it goes into screensaver mode it keeps the background black and only uses a small portion of the screen to display the time and date. It also moves the time and date around to prevent burn-in.
I use it at night when my phone is charging. The black pixels do emit a tiny amount of light but that shouldn't do any harm.

I've had phone for 6mths. Most of the time on 0% brightness. I never noticed it before but after reading your post I noticed the AM/PM burn in VERY VERY slightly (only on pure blue background)
From now on I'm using 24hrs clock format LOL.
Let's face it though guys, u can't keep a perfect screen forever. I even have a single stuck pixel but I learned to live with it. (1 pixel on a 480x800 screen is fairly unnoticeable, especially if it's a good colour).
It was not noticable till i read about this thread, i hate knowing things like this! hahah
Anyway we can fix the burn in ?
EDIT:
The 24hr format barely helps since theres already a very faint image of the numbers burning in.
Im guessing after a yr of usage the screen burn will be very obvious... with this said im having 2nd thoughts of getting another AMOLED based screen haha
to fix LCD TV's you flush with white. so leave a pure white screen running over night. this kinda resets the crystals.
worth a try with the phone also with the galaxy s you need to have 8 dead pixels to change the screen so if affected area is over 8 pixel should be fine.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The AM/PM sign is displayed by a white pixel so Im not sure displaying a white color overnight can help fix the issue.
Having the screen replaced is not an option here in where I live, its gonna take over 60-75 days for them just to replace the screen and chances are it will be a refurb screen or they will just outright refuse replacement since its a burn in.
The affected area is probably more than 8 pixels.
it resets the crystals so should work. worth a try if someone has a burn

The AM/PM is displayed with a white color by default, so how can displaying a a full white screen fix/reset the image burn ?
btw the image burn is a faint black.
Im also guessing with the GB update they removed the AM/PM so help prevent screen burn and prolong the intitial burn instead of 4 months to probably 8 or 12.
Anyone but me have this problem?
Haven't checked... and not going to do either.... as it's a non issue in normal usage (i'm seldom staring at a completely white screen just to see that the status bar area has aged the screen differently) and a "feature" of amoled technology
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
It's there on most colors! I took white cause it is easier to see on a photo but it is there all the time! I'm not retarded!
And the worst part is that the little part that is whiter is the only part that is really sharp like it used to be, while the rest of the screen never is really white and sharp but instead has an uneven yellowish color. And it is worse than I could capture on photo.
I love my phone im not trying to mock it.
I'm not even gonna check
Because if I do, I'll notice it every single time I use the phone, and it'll annoy me to death.
If you don't see it you don't have it. It's there all the time. Of course it's only in games or reading stuff that is full screen. But anything except the black status bar!
Ditto problem.

Hi All,
came across this thread when looking for a solution for SGS1.
it seems that Burn in is indeed a problem for AMOLED screens.
in my situation, I've found a burn cause by Waze (of course, any app that would leave the screen on would cause it).
sadly enough, my phone is only 6 months old and I use Waze ~30 min. a day - not much for a burn you think? wrong!
for now, I've set Waze to hide the point bar and the zoom control, but still many objects on the screen are static - including the notification bar.
does anyone has a good solution?
Same problem!
But in reality it is not a real problem..
AMOLED is still not ready for prime time, but at least Samsung is trying to improve on it with every iteration. Can't wait for 40"+ AMOLED HD TVs.
Before waranty goes off demand to change display..

Maybe Samsung changed the way how to control the display? (hardware drivers)

Irrelevant. It's an AMOLED hardware-related thing, nothing to do with software. My screen has burn-in, your screen has/will, every screen does/will.
When somebody says their screen has none they just don't see it. Because really, all our phones one day or later will show it.
I don't use any apps that ever hide the status bar so even if I did have it, it wouldn't bother me.

What do you want us to loook for ???
Hey everyone!
Yesterday I noticed a blue bar at the top of my screen. It's my statusbar which has burned into my display. If I open a complete white screen, it's clearly visible (one can even see the clock, lol).
I didn't use my phone excessively, didn't use it as a night clock or something, I just used it actively ~3 hours a day.
I'm thinking about contacting Samsung as I bought it on 2nd March 2011 - so AFAIK I should still have warranty on it. I'm now asking myself what Samsung would do - either repairing it (I don't think so) or sending me a new device? I'm a bit afraid that they will send me a i9001 since the i9000 is not manufactured anymore.
Has anybody else experienced similar problems with AMOLEDs from Samsung and can tell me something about their warranty regulations?
Best Regards and thanks in advance, guys!

The problem is less pronounced with the sgs 1 compared to the sgs 2 but it is definitely there. The status bar displays the same stuff all of the time and it is prone to screen burn in . Try one of the amoled burn in apps on the market and see if they help your device or not. They didnt remove the problem entirely but at least I don't get this obvious blue line across the top of my screen when I watch videos or do anything else in landscape.
I've got the exact same problem . Its mostly on the top left of the screen(status bar area) and very light bluish tint throughout the status bar. Doesn't bother me too much though.
BTW I use my phone a lot.

The point is that I read a lot of scripts and books on my screen and thus the blue bar is quite annoying. What do I have to consider when I send it back to Samsung?
My idea was to flash a stock ROM from sammobile and wipe everything. Do I have to do more (e.g. downgrade Bootloader or something)?
I havent't faced any issue like this
I really doubt samsung will do anything about it.. They most likely sent it back as "everything is fine" i think it's very rare they switch screens (or phones). I think it's just user traces...

Dammit, my second i9000 got this 2. It ran stock for my friend, and the menu icons like contacts, messaging, browser and apps got burnt in... it's unbearable.

Possibly a defective unit? Under normal circumstances, in no way should this happen unless you leave the screen on at high brightness displaying the same stuff for an extended period of time.
I max out the brightness of my SGS since day 1 and I only notice burn in on the status bar. Although I admit, I have changed from Touchwiz launcher to launcher pro, adw ex, go, zeam, apex, nova, lightning, back to zeam and now Apex, so the icons on my launchers and home screens have shifted quite a bit in position thus eliminating the possibility of burn in. You do have to make sure that you do not display the same stuff for an extended period of time using OLED displays.
I've got S4 ~ only weeks old for now, barely used it and got the numbers burned in on the screen barely visible in blue background so the screen burn in started in that area clearly (they have been present for more than a week) i changed to swiftkey in order to avoid the whole situation and i always hide actually my keyboard when not in use and such. however the weird part i feel the numbers are becoming more visible now in the blue background than they were before i change the keyboard? does the detoration keep happening in the same area even tho i changed the keyboard itself ? is there a way i can prevent it from happening. and the status bar if possible i want to hide it but keep being able to drag the notification center?
thank you
anyone got any idea

There is an app that claims to repair burn-ins by scroling black and white bars. I have the app (pro) myself but haven`t used it yet to repair burn-ins. Link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.displaytester.

That is a myth. Once the screen is burnt in there is nothing you can do. Claim the warranty.

now the burn ins got even more as in more places and such, thing is i'm abroad now and samsung as other companies warranty is not international sadly. i have this display tester pro app and tried it for some minutes didnt see any difference maybe i've used it wrong. weird doesnt that mean all s4 will get at some point burn in. weirdly thought amoled tech have been advanced at least to the extent that it doesnt burn in that fast :/
i heard there is a way to make inverse of burn in and leave it on so that burn in goes complete screen loses tiny amount of contrast but become equal fully once again something of that sort... is it possible any suggestion :/ never going for amoled again (coming from iphone)
I had this problem on my old HTC One S (similar PenTile display), so I've learned my lesson now and run a screen burn tool every night to prevent the problem from happening. It must be done on full brightness.

Yeah, burn-in is one of the reasons i went with an lcd phone, i was paranoid about it happening with my S3, running white screen deadpixel finder at full brightness every couple of days, move your icons around, keep your brightness as low as possible, there is an app called "burn in Savior" for the notification bar i also used "go launcher" to hide the notification bar, also change your clock on the n-bar to 24hr so the am/pm don't burn in.
You guys should see the HTC One M7 screen it`s glorious, no burn-in worries.

Had the HTC One, was a nice device but like all phones it has its disadvantages:
- trapped within the CID, unless you have S-Off and change CID manualy
- Unlocking the bootloader may cause warranty issues, even if relocked
- Slow updates
- No removable battery
- No external SDCard
I suppose you have to decide what is more important to you!, I would love an S4 as well. :good:
