[Q] Unlock bootloader without wipe on stock 4.4.2 (no root) - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, fisrt I read the similars others thread and I didn't find my answer.
I have my Nexus 4 since february 2013, so I have lots of data and apps which can't be saved even with adb backup (Rovio Games, GTA 3, Jetpack, Rayman, Sonic, etc.). So I don't want to lose it. However, I need to root my N4 for titanium Games backup, Xposed Framework, busybox...
I have learnt that there is a manip to unlock bootloader without wipe BUT (it's from 2013 so) I didn't find if it still works on 4.4.2 (KOT49H) with the bootloader MAKOZ30d. Please quickly answer me.

You unlock the bootloader, put a custom recovery on, and then root. Unlocking the bootloader has nothing to do if you're rooted our not.
Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your device. no way to get around that

you can use android tuner to back-up apps with data and restore them later

I have edited the sentence : without root (makes nosense) --> without wipe. I said that because it exists but I don't know if it already works on 4.4.2. I will try your app ttheodotou

Titanium Backup, Recovery apps, and the noob

Noob for tablets. Got the nexus 10 for the family for christmas. Want to get it all setup before I turn it over to the wolves.
I love using TBpro on my Droid Bionic. I thought it would be good to have a solid backup program on the tablet, and since I have it on my smartphone I thought I would hang with what I've sorta know already.
Dont really understand what unlocked/locked means for a bootloader, and why the N10 needs that why many smartphone can be rooted without being unlocked.
I would love to hear some views on the purposes of apps like ClockWorkMod and TWRP and what they do and provide. Seems like they do perform backups and more. Why TBpro is likely just a backup app. What functions do these recovery apps have the make them "must have".
thanks for the time answering the tablet noob
TBPro requires Root access and to acquire root access you have to be able to modify the operating system. You can't do that until the bootloader is unlocked. Once unlocked, you then need to flash Custom Recovery (either CMW or TWRP) in order to to flash/install the the files required to install the root binaries. Other uses of recovery include making NAND/System Backups and installing custom roms. They are essential if you are into modding your device. I have an LG G2x that is rooted and has a custom rom (CM7.2) and a Custom Kernel (Faux123 v54), as well as Beats Audio for Gingerbread. I installed all of those via ClockworkMod. I followed ZedoMax's instructions to root my Nexus 10 and had only the initial bootloop issue after unlocking the bootloader. That was easy to fix but I couldn't get ClockWorkMod to stay installed so I flashed TWRP instead. Works great. Just follow this thread and watch the vids. Hope I helped some.

Thanks!
After unlocking, and using CMW or TWRP. I can then "root" my device. ok. After rooting, I can use TBpro.
At this point, do I need to remain "unlocked" Does it matter? For the N10 will I receive OTA after being unlocked/rooted,
or do I need to be in another state?

Yes to all. Another option for you if you are not comfortable typing in the various commands is to use the Wufresh method. Watch the video by qbking777 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015467

Thanks again. I did stumble across that site and was trying to compare that to the mskip Nexus root tool kit. That was had so many options and I didnt (yet) find the cliff note's version on what they all do and why you'd need to.
The GUI for Wufresh is simple. Do you use it? I read a little about the root and the root+custom recovery choices. Not entirely clear which is preferred, at least for me needs. And I've not got a warm fuzzy feeling about what state the N10 should be in, such that OTA updates still happen. Can they happen when unlocked+rooted+custom recovery but still stock ROM (without system mods)
The wugfresh version automates what the zedomax version does by hand. I did mine via the zedomax way.

I would suggest using the Wugfresh method, definitely the simplest to use. And a great recovery is TWRP, it is very clear and easy to understand what it is that each menu contains.
Also with the OTA updates, it really depends on the size and type of update. If it is a fairly major one, like JB 4.1 to JB 4.2 then you will have to use the option in Wugfresh toolkit to 'unroot', then update. After the update you can simply reuse the toolkit to root again. Sometimes if the OTA is small it will simply install over the rooted device, but I wouldn't count on it. It definitely shouldn't discourage you from rooting though, its relatively simple to fix

[Q] Rooting Nexus 7 Questions

So after a year of owning a Nexus 7, I have finally decided to root it, however, I have a few questions.
1. I have not updated to KitKat yet. Should I update to KitKat first before or after?
2. What is best to use to backup my data? Will it back up everything including apps, files, settings?
3. Do I need anything or do I need to do anything to prepare for root?
Also, I noticed the Wug Toolkit. Will that do everything for me in just 3 - 4 clicks?
Thank you for your time.

I suggest you update to kitkat first before rooting. For backups, use Carbon as it does not require root. You can use wugs toolkit as it is updated to root the device with the latest supersu. You can also use the toolkit to flash kitkat with just a few clicks.

[Q] Backing up phone BEFORE rooting?

I'm about to take my baby steps and root my Nexus 4 for the first time. I've read the sticky's and have a good idea of what I'd be doing, but I don't see much in the way of backing things up before root and as I understand, rooting wipes your data. Can anyone help me on this or at least better understand what I should do?
I'm also having difficulty understanding the whole bootloader and custom recovery too but not too much trouble. I'd just like to know how to install a custom recovery and how much risk I'm at of messing up my bootloader.

Rooting does not wipe data, the unlocking process does. There is no really good way to backup everything prior to unlokcing, you could use My Backup but you should really use the Pro version which is $4.99 (Many people swear by it for unrooted phones, I have no real experience with it). Wugfresh's toolkit has a backup and restore when doing unlock, but honestly, it messed up my phone and I had to factory default anyways.
As long as you are syncing stuff to Google (contacts, pictures, videos, etc), have Android Backup& Restore enabled (handles apps and common system settings), SMS Backup & Restore (text and pix messages), and you pull of the other files you want, there is no real need to backup at all. I swap ROMs all the time, and this is all I do to go from one ROM to another.
As far as the actual rooting process, ie. flashing SuperSU, there is no need to backup prior to that... all that is going to do is add a few files in some system directories and that's it.
The greatest thing about a Nexus device is it's ability to be modified... and within normal means it is virtually unbrickable, so give it a shot, and if you screw it up ask for help, thousands of people here have done it and can help, and if you still can't figure out a problem just restore the Google system images and whoalla... your phone is back to out of box condition.
You are able to root and unlock without wiping any data. Just check out my guide (the link is in the stickies, too)

I opened your links but they all seem to be about Xperia devices.
I don't quite understand. Isn't the unlocking process needed to root the phone, thereby loosing all the data?
easy
before rooting, you hav to unlock bootloader and it wipes your all pics videos etc so better backup in your pc and thn try root. foloow guide ,its easy, or search on youtube for videos...

OK I guess that makes sense. Does that include phone contacts, SMS and passwords?
And I suppose my final question is the danger of the bootloader. Is it possible for a newbie like myself to ruin something accidentally?

Yeah I meant the one in the stickies here, I'll add the guide to my signature later
But I meant this guide. It'll root before unlocking the bootloader and you are able to unlock without wiping then. Check it out

It's not necessary to flash the recovery, but you may flash it if you want to and if you need it
Couple ways to do a backup without root.
Use adb,
eg. adb backup -all -apk -nosystem
Then pull files you want to backup
eg. adb pull /sdcard/
Or use helium app available from play store which is basically a gui for the adb backup command.
Thanks. I notice the -nosystem command, does that mean it won't back up system details?
I suppose my final question is Windows 8 support. I saw a thread a while back when you have to do something extra for the drivers and I can't seem to see it in the sticky threads.

[Q] unlock bootloader without wipe data

ok that's the story. (sorry for bad english )
iv'e upgrade my android 4.4 to 5.0.1 and now i got no root , and my bootloader is locked.
i have pictures, apps, sms, whatsapp conversations that i want to keep , and i understaned that if i unlock my bootload so all the data will be removed.
in 4.4 kitkat i used TowelRoot to root my phone and it worked like magic without delete anything.
theres a way i can root my 5.0.1 nexus 4 without lose any data ?
Thanks !
No, there is no way to root without unlocking first.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
No, there is no way to unlock with it wiping. Why not just copy the data off the phone onto some other device and copy back once you are unlocked?
Just use AndroidSDK to backup your device. You can root and then restore your phone to its state just as it was. Even your offline games progresses will keep.
If root is working without problems, you could try to unlock it using BootUnlocker
EDIT: Sorry, I've overseen that you're on 5.0.1 without root. veketash's tip is the best you can do, then.
you can't do root before unlock...
Everyone saying you cant root without unlock is wrong. I have rooted my N4 with towelroot and then unlocked my bootloader without wiping any data at all using BootUnlocker. So you technically can unlock it without wiping data.
EDIT: Nevermind I didnt see he was using 5.0.1 yeah then there is no way of unlocking without wiping data.

Xperia Z2 TA/DRM Backup Problem

Hi everyone.
I have been looking to join for a long time now, I hope my first post is not considered a poor quality post as I'm really stuck at the moment and can't wait to fullfil this learning curve.
I've been reading as much as I can for a long time, considering to root my Z2 mobile for a long time also, I finally decided I would like to for various reasons.
I am running D6503 / 6.0.1 / 23.5.A.1.291
So far I have enabled my Windows 10 machine to allow adb, this took a few attempts but when reading the comments it became clear I needed to type ./adb devices and not just "adb devices", once I noticed this small issue the process worked.
I then tried to run Backup-TA.bat as this is needed before rooting, to save losing any DRM Keys
Waiting for USB Debugging...OK
Pushing Backup TA Tools...OK
Checking for SU binary...FAILED
Requesting root permissions...FAILED
I'm sorry if this is a typical newbie question, I have an idea that I'm missing the SU Binary and need to provide root permission due to the message but I've not read a clear comment about where to get those.
EDIT:
Not to sound even further like a newbie or like I've not read anything, but I've read you need to root first, before backing up TA/DRM?
I thought the point was to backup TA/DRM before rooting since rooting will lose the DRM forever?
EDIT2:
I'm not looking for anything too advanced right now and would be happy with just rooting, no custom roms, just happy to remove bloatware, add some apps, mod the camera etc
Can somebody confirm, you need to root and then backup ta/drm, then unlock bootloader (which will lose your ta/drm forever unless you backup first)?
I'm sure it's all simple after the first success, I just don't want to make any mistakes that can't be undone.

Thank you but I have read this thread again and again, I am still looking to get everything in order fully.
Waiting for USB Debugging...OK
Pushing Backup TA Tools...OK
Checking for SU binary...FAILED
Requesting root permissions...FAILED
You failed. Why failed?
You need accept permission SuperSu for device.
Before you plug in device, you need turn USB Debugging and plug in device you need to accept permission SuperSu, allow all (important)
Ok. Do it, again and enjoy your phone.
When you are a Sony Xperia Z2 owner on Android 6.0.1 you need to be a wizard to get started with rooting your device.
I managed to get a wizard. The huge problem is: When you wanna root your z2 6.0.1 you need to get into the recovery but you cant get into the recovery without root ....... the magical trick is to downgrade to android 5.x and use kingroots or whatever the app is called and than you can flash a recovery and install a custom rom. Or use the android 6.0.1 magic which is just another workaround: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...persu-t3437280
When you have trouble to deal with that instructions let us know why you fail.
A super awesome super user here helped me with every step if moderators wish to close this thread now.
