On my Galaxy S4 I was able to download an app called 1-Click WiFI Tether that didn't require the phone to be rooted. I just upgraded to the S5 and now the app does not work. I was wondering if anyone here knows of a good app that I can use without rooting the phone or am I going to have to wait till it is rooted in order to make my phone a hotspot?

Which carrier version do you have? Most have been rooted by now, and it takes all of 30 seconds to do.

I have an S5 from at&t. From what I have read, there is not any root for this one.

Never mind. Someone posted about Foxfi. I downloaded it and it looks like it works for WiFi. Problem solved

Galaxy S5 on Sprint Wifi Tethering
I am having the same problem with wifi tethering. I have already rooted the device, but every wifi tether app I have tried does not work. Including Wifi Tether, Wifi Tether Router, and FoxFi. Also hide it pro no longer works on the new android kitkat. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thank you.
which carriers removed the wifi tether toggle from the drop down menu. I have a verizon s5 and it is missing.
Wifi Router worked on my rooted S5 on sprint. look here.

I just rooted the G2(vzw) and I tried 3 different tethering apps from the playstore and none work. It doesnt even broadcast a signal.
On barnacle it says "WIFI: Could not sed ad-hoc mode of wlan0: Operation not supported on trasnport endpoint"
I'm not a heavy data user, but I do need to tether since there is no ISP in my area (just 56k ('yes i said that) and satellite which is ridiculously expensive).
The Att version g had a built on tethering app did u freeze or uninstall that if you did unfreeze it..I just turned tethered on my g2

I have the verizon verison therefore if I try the built in app I get the pop-up saying I need the subscription. I'm grandfathered into the unlimited data.
Same here. No go just yet. Usb tethering works (Fox fi) but no wireless tether yet. (Verizon unlimited here)

Hey everyone, first of all thank you for taking the time to look at my post.
My question is this, what is the difference between the mobile free hotspot and the wifi tether app? Reason why I ask is, on older rooted phones the wifi tether app was the program you ran to get your phone to be a hotspot. Even if your phone was preloaded with a mobile hotspot option from your cell phone carrier. From what I thought, even if there was a hack to use the original mobile hotspot preloaded on your phone. The cell phone carrier could moniter your usage? So thats when wifi tether app was made available, to avoid this. Or am I waaaay off bases?

I believe you are correct, but from Sprint with unlimited data, all they would see is the data usage, so using the native hotspot shouldn't alert them to anything strange. In my experiance the wifi tether apps are not as reliable, with the native hotspot hack, I have no problems, and when using a tether app it seems to require much more configuration and was still not as reliable, I frequently got "limited or no connectivity" using a tether app.

Awwwwww....I see and you are correct there is connection problems. But let me ask you this...does the native hotsot have better download rates than the tether app? Or thats just depends on your data service?

To be honest I have not tested that, because hotspot works consistently and the tether app wouldn't always get internet access when connected, I went with what is easier. I would assume that it is based on your current network speed. I ran a speed test and got 2.18Mbps down and then connected my laptop to the hotspot and got 1.98Mbps down. So it is close, I don't currently have a working tether app since this works ok. I know the speed sucks but its only 3g in the 24th floor of an office in Denver, where LTE is not fully released yet.
Has anyone got this apk to work for the note 3? Is It Possible? I just want a tether apk that tells me the amount of data that's being used and this one is the only one I know of that does that correctly.

Which one? I can only get the native to work on my note three bypassing it with the hotspot toggle switch widget found on the market, but I rather use the a different one like open garden. but I have no luck making it work.
The apk wifi tether for rooted users. I used it on my Nexus

I found you can use wifi tether in native tether mode, but it resets the hot spot settings to default every time you turn it on. I, too, would like it to work properly because I like seeing how much data I use and the network speed.

Is there any risk in using native tether app? I am coming from tmobile, where they'd hassle you to get a tethering plan.

I don't think so. I use it pretty regularly without issues.

Hi all
I have a Verizon Motorolla Droid RAZR M (XT907) and it's rooted. I was using the stock tethering app in settings from Verizon and my company told me not to use it, then gave me a MiFi portable hotspot, but then 2 months later they took it away.... So now I want to figure out how to tether my phone without the company being billed for tethering. I tried FoxFi but it doesn't work at all. Anyone have a good app for this, preferably free? Or some way to use the stock app without being billed? I tried to search but there's nothing specific to my question...
You could try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981625 but of course they would see an increase in data...

My buddy has a GS4 on Sprint and he has been unable to get the WiFi tether to work without paying extra for it. He doesn't want to unlock/root it. Is there a workaround without root?

Have you checked out FoxFi/PdaNet? Depending on the software level the phone is on, one or the other should work.
http://foxfi.com/
Foxfi doesn't work, pdanet won't help as we need WiFi tether for the Chromecast.
Thanks though

I'm also curious about this. It seems that the KitKat update has broken most of the apps that were previously recommended, including FoxFi. Any ideas?
Foxfi has been fixed with KitKat.

Which version? I tried using 2.16.2. When I try to start the hotspot, I see this:
Hotspot Error
You are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?
Cancel OK
No matter which option I pick, it never works. Thoughts?

I also tried the newest version of PdaNet, which I found out is basically also FoxFi. No luck there either.
Any other ideas?
Try Klink. Works great for me.

Oh. I think of a physical connection when someone says "tether". My apologies sir.
Now I'm thinking WiFi Hotspot. I obviously don't know what I'm talking about, so I'll bow out.
