How can I find out what DownloadManager is doing? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been trying to work out why my battery has been draining quickly the last few days. According to BetterBatteryStats it seems that DownloadManager has been making approximately 100 calls per hour today, but I'm not aware of any reason for it. There's no visible sign of anything downloading.
I've looked at my account sync settings. For the Google services, the only things that have synced in the last hour are Gmail and Google+. I've disabled all syncing on my Dropbox and Samsung accounts. I don't have sync enabled on any other accounts.
Is there anyway of finding out exactly what DownloadManager is doing??

Download manager is woken up by others application like Google Chrome. They make use of it.

G2 email application causes inordinate battery drain

I can conclusively state that the "Email" application on our G2 is responsible for consuming an inordinate amount of battery, because it does not properly sleep. When I had my phone configured to use Exchange/Activesync via the built-in sync and Email application, it would consistently be at the top of the "partial wake" list. Generally, the partial wake breakdown is a good starting point to determine which apps may be misbehaving. The following bug appears to be what we are seeing here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9307
To validate the battery drain, I completely deleted the account associated with Exchange and installed Touchdown (3rd party Exchange sync app). The difference is substantial. I was previously at 50% battery after just a few hours, where I can now make it easily through the entire day without charging.
Short story: If you're using the built in Email app (not Gmail, that is fine), try removing the account associated with it for a day and observe the change in battery life.

I've also noticed this, if you search this forum for activesync you'll find where I diagnosed it along with the facebook app as being two things that drain your battery.
My fix was to instead just forward my email to a gmail and use gmail's push functionality. Works great, and gmail lets you change your "send from" address so it's completely transparent to anyone you send mail to.
Just thought I'd let you know you're not the only one.
The "email" (NOTE: NOT GMAIL) app does seem to drain battery, at least when used with Exchange ActiveSync.
Did u guys change the check interval time? Iirc when u make an account it defaults to checking every 15 minutes. Sure way to kill the battery. Just a thought

Unfortunately the interval makes no difference. The app basically does not sleep, even if I set it to never poll. In fact, I set it to not poll at all for an entire day and rebooted before writing this post.
There must be something else at play on your setup. I have zero problems with partial wake using the email app with my company's exchange server.
I have Exchange sync set on push, gmail set on push, and 2 other accounts set to 1 hour polling, and I get a full day's use out of the battery. Off the charger at 6 AM, back on around 11 PM (usually with about 25% battery remaining).

Same. But 9am to 2am
My battery will drain significantly faster just by having gmail sync activated...so for me, that's just as much of a kill. I don't really need that feature for the time being so I've turned it off which doubles my usage time
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Again syncing email with the company exchange server, syncing tweetdroid every 9 minutes after 8 hour so f very light use still at 86%
Perhaps volume of email is a factor. I get 200+ emails per day and I can imagine that having an affect on perceived battery drain

[Q] Power issues with com.motorola.contacts

Hi,
I recently flashed to the base Gingerbread ROM released on 3/30. Ever since flashing to this ROM, my battery is rapidly dying. When I go into the battery usage monitor, I see that a process called "com.motorola.contacts" is listed as using 70% + of the battery. Under this process I see a bunch of packages bundled in such as:
Calendar Service
Contacts Storage
Rich Clipboard
Accounts Storage
Motorola Storage Monitor
MOTOBLUR Indexing Service
ContactsData
Email Engine
Contacts Sync
Yahoo Contacts
Contacts
Social Messaging Service
Dialer
MS Exchange Service
Policy Manager Service
Policy Manager Service
Admin Notifier
This process is killing my battery. Any ideas on remedies for this?
Thanks.
Which accounts do you have logged in? Start removing all but your Google account and adding back slowly to see which one is the problem. I only have a Google account setup (Facebook & Twitter too, but only by their apps - not Blur), and I'm getting tremendous battery life on GB. Not a lot of use yesterday, but I hit 70% remaining on the Moto extended battery after 23 hours.
The only accounts I have setup are facebook and gmail. . . I deleted and readded my gmail account, which seems to have alleviated the power issue, however, the gmail account is now hardly pushing any mail.

I'm having EXACTLY the same problem, and am trying to decide if I can remove some of those apps. I have 2 email accounts, a mac.com one, and an exchange one. I've had them on Froyo with no problems at all. Battery life is almost 0.
Is there any way to find out what these apps do, and how essential they are? I am not sending or receiving that many messages; and it appears like maintaining the contact data base is using up a lot of energy--but there is nothing to it, really, it's static.
I have removed and replaced the corporate account many times, as I did have problems getting contacts to work properly-it only wanted to store 999 out of 2900 contacts. I finally added two by hand, and the remainder then downloaded. But, as part of the process, I deleted and reinstated the account many times. the Mac.com account is a basic IMAP account.

Android System and OS using a lot of data plus 17-20% of battery

My battery life has not been as good since I upgraded the ROM a few weeks ago. The biggest culprit seems to be the Android System and Android OS. Each of them typically use about 8-10% of the battery, so it's not uncommon for them to have used 20% of the battery combined.
In addition, Android System uploads a bunch of data. In a full day, Android system typically sends 3-5 MB and receives 400-900 KB.
Android OS (is this all apps combined??) has uploaded 500-1000 KB and receives 10-20 MB.
I've frozen the apps on the receommended list (except for a couple I use like the ATT code scanner). Use no social network stuff. I do have Exchange plus two Gmail accounts + 3 K9 email accounts setup.
I can't seem to manage any setting change to reduce the battery/data usage of these two.

I've done all those things except for (Settings > Data manager > Data Delivery > social apps > sync over wifi), which I did actually do a couple hours ago on one last run through the settings to make sure I hadn't missed anything before posting here.
What the heck is android system uploading? Is that motoblur backing things up? I have searched XDA and googled and while I have seen the question about Android System with large uploads, I have yet to see a solid answer as to what's going on.

I am rooted, and have frozen most of the apps on the recommended list.
I don't have facebook or twitter accounts setup. Only Exchange, Gmail and some K9 IMAP accounts.
using traffic monitor, i found that the calibrate compass service, which seems to be a whole suit of services sucks down a lot of data. its been using about 1gb data a month. which im sure is putting some strain on the battery.
Multiple email accounts will cause a great deal of data usage on their own. Especially an exchange account and a gmail account.
If you can, why not use the gmail account to send and receive all the email for the imap accounts. I do this with my business accounts and my personal email.
You also may be syncing your contacts and all with both the exchange and the gmail account which would cause extra data and would be a bit over kill.

Possible solution for surprisingly high data usage

I'm on a data plan with 1GB/month on my Galaxy SII. Recently, I discovered that my "credit" was shrinking incredibly fast, sometimes by multiple hundred MB a day. First I thought I might have downloaded a big game or app that day, but these high drops did not stop so I finally started to look for a solution.
I downloaded a data tracking app and tried to find out which app it was that downloaded so much data.
Finally, I found out that the pre-installed (Samsung) Mails app caused the problem. At every try to receive mails (which I had set to an automatic interval of 15 minutes), the app downloaded between 20 and 100 MB. It seemed like logging into one of my email accounts failed, but the app kept trying for multiple times et each sync.
Finally I set up an automatic redirection of new mails of all my accounts to one gmail account on the email provider's web site, deleted all email accounts from the preinstalled (Samsung) email client and I am now using the preinstalled gmail app, which works fine.
Now, my 1GB is enough for the month, again.
I hope this helps anyone with similar problems.
U could have simply disabled the sync... And when ever u want u could simply refresh the mail....

Yeah, but every refresh would have been 20-100MB again vs some KB now...
1word droidwall
Download only headers and limit each mail to 20kb or so. I use K9 and Touchdown for my mails . As previous post, get a Firewall to monitor and block unwanted programs using up your data connection.

Google Services draining battery

Hello, in the last couple of days googleservices drain my battery more than screen. In the battery usage stats ,googleservices is everytime around 25-30%.
I disabled location settings (in the phone settings and in the google settings). im not using google now, nor any other google apps (books, games, music). nothing. What could be the reasons and is there any way what app or process causes so much "googleservices" activity?
Same issues here as well. 4.3 is very heavy on google services. had this issue on 4.3 note 2 as well but never had it on 4.1

Don't synch Gmail.
Use samsung email client and you'll see a BIG difference in terms of battery life

Yes I actually mean both
Don't use Gmail and use integrated email client AND go to accounts > google > untick Sync Gmail.
Let me know how it goes! Ciao

Ok i disabled gmail sync so my gmail app doesnt work anymore, but i have a problem with adding gmail acc to my native email client. As far as i know it should work automatically when i enter username and pass and click next (i added my yahoo acc like that) but it says authentication failed.
I checked in my gmail settings, imap is enabled , so is there anything else i need to enter manually?

Do you use a two-steps log in for Gmail?
If so enter the Gmail app password. I do have 2 steps verification system and rather then entering my Gmail password I use the password I've got for my app account.
I'm sorry I can't be more precise but I reckon that is why you're not able to log in.
Ciao

thanx , it worked : ) will see if it reduces battery drain and will post here.
can you just explain me what does sync under native email client mean? i have now 2 accounts in native email client and they both have only sync option under account settings. should that be disabled as well even though i disabled it under google account settings?
If I disable gmail sync, should I keep the contacts sync on with gmail? or use the samsung contacts sync?
Same issues google has big sync to drain battery. Mine was 334mb today just for auto backup image

Google play services is draining too much battery. Is anyone else experiencing this? It's really not normal to have more battery drain from this instead of screen on. On my note 2 this never happened and from 7:00 am to 11:00 PM my phone was at 50% with 3 hours of screen on and about 300 apps. Now with GN3 with this rom stock kernel and fresh install with about only 20 apps I can hardly go until 10:00 PM with only 2 hours screen on.

I hate having to turn that off because I want the Goggle Now services to work, and I've found on mine I keep all of that on and still get rid of the Google Services drain. The problem comes from the fact that even when you switch WiFi off, network location keeps it running all the time for location purposes. In 4.1 there was nothing you could do about it, but under 4.3 if you set the following:
Keep Wifi on during sleep > Never
Scanning always available > Unticked
This allows WiFi location to work when you're actually using Wifi, but not if it's only keeping Wifi on for location purposes. I have been running this for a while now, and the Google Services drain is pretty much gone, but full Google Now and Location Services are still available.
Just as a footnote - I'm not actually using the "Wifi during sleep" setting, I use DS Battery Saver Pro with a custom profile that just forces Wifi off when the screen is off, but the settings above should have the same effect.........
